Fire Safety and Autism

Light bulb fireFire safety and autism. Instant fear. I know that getting my 3 adult daughters out of the house quickly would be impossible. And they would never escape on their own. We could practice drills daily (we don't) and they would still perish. Sounds grim? It is. It's autism. We have working smoke detectors. We have a safety sticker on the front door for emergency personnel - fire, police, EMT. I have a standard fire extinguisher on my kitchen counter. It's bulky and in a nighttime fire would be useless, even though it's just down the hall in my small ranch house. These wee StaySafe bottles could mean the difference between getting out and perishing. I have two in my room in my nightstand, one on the mantle of my wood fireplace and one in my kitchen next to its clunky big brother.  Be aware, they are not childproof.  That's not an issue in my home, but could be in yours. They are 20% off for Amazon Prime members today, and AofA is an Amazon Affliate to share books and other products that might help our families.

With fire all your senses go out the window training kicks in hence drills.. You see people walking into the seat of the fire when they should be running away from it. Number one action GET OUT! Out the window whatever the fire blanket's etc. help but GET OUT by the closest safe route possible is always number one.

Then again what did this wee girl do to anyone who needs a fire to be hurt.Worse than pack animals.

I've always wondered how I would evacuate my non-verbal 20 year old if there was a bushfire at our place, and we live in a bushfire zone here in Australia. If we did have to evacuate and the house burnt down, he would not cope staying in temporary accommodation with strangers. I would have to erect a tent or hire a caravan and live amongst the burnt cinders until our house was rebuilt. Even then he would struggle. The 'joy' of Autism.

What about "fire hoods" and "fire evacuation mask" these relatively cheap devices give you 15 minutes of breathable air and the cheapest I saw online was $18 and the highest 50 dollars. The most common cause of fire death is smoke inhalation. An extinguisher is often no use as a fire may have grown large but still if you think this device in the article is useful buy one or two. There is also a "fire escape ladder" mounted on a window, my father had one of these when I was little so they have been around for decades.
The Regional Centers of California and D evelopmentally Disabled self advocacy groups do not care about health and safety issues. such as those related to the seriously disabled things like fire and drowning COVID ect dangers. These groups only care about absurd lawsuits over bullying obese people with Down syndrome and wheelchair accessibility.
