The Parched Life of Autism

8D062BDA-580D-49C6-B542-581FCF92D0ABAs we careen toward April and the nonsense of "awareness" month, I wanted to share a tidbit from deep inside the life of those all too well aware. Us. See this Thermos brand straw cup? See that black "yuck" on a Q-Tip? That's the moldy, mildewy grossness that forms inside the straw attachment. I only fill that cup with water. Good old H2O. And yet, it get disgusting. Fast. Simple question number 54,567,579:

That's it. That's today's autism reality moment.

Dear Ones, Kim's question and your replies are so real , so important. Im not in your positions, but I have answers that will be useful for some, ---I hope. My situation is that I have a husband who has mild Alzheimers. His Alzheimers used to be WORSE, but it improved over a couple of years, with the help of the work of Dr. Dale Bredesen ( Book : The End of Alzheimers). Now Im 75 and there are things I can do and he is 79 and there are things he can do, so we are a team and we have to keep that team going and help from mainstream medicine is not something that is particularly useful. I have to stay alive for my husband and some others for whom I can be valuable (And life in India is not so "easy" as in the U.S. ) So my answer is this : Stay alive and well and keep doing what you are doing. I have not been sick for about 8 years (with one exception that I cured quickly) Prior to that, I was sick with colds, flu's. pneumonias every few months, Toany of those who are interested , I ask you to write to Kim and she has my permission to send on my email.
I would be able to describe in better detail how I have managed to survive many unusual tropical diseases and you can too. There are many ways to prevent health problems and I urge all of you to study, Study Study- just as you did when you wanted to cure your kids of autism. Starting soon (April 1) there is a Health Summit. I found it on Sayer ji's website and it will be full of information and you will get to know who are the really good authorities to watch in the future.
A couple of clues I can give now- My good health began exactly when I was at the lowest point in my life. I had been bitten by a rabid dog and was terrified for some weeks. My only peaceful moments were when I slept. After that, I began taking a supplement named Haritake, wich you can purchase alone, or take it cheaply by going to any Indian grocery store and purchasing " Trifala" , one of the oldest, best of Indian supplements, designed simply to keep people healthy. It may not help you much to research this herb as it has always been dubbed as "good for digestion" . That is merely the beginning. It is actually a strong antioxidant that heals any inflammation and it speeds up the excretion of toxins including mercury from the body. Along with Trifala, I now suggest a small amount of iodine daily, particularly for those of you who live in the Great Lakes region, where many people are very deficient. Proper use of iodine decreases your chances of breast and prostate cancers and I found that it makes my brain more alert, I took a lot of my information on this from Dr. Sherry Tenpenny and Dr. Jorge Flechas - both on youtube. (Hint- mainsteam medical doctors are likely to mislead you on iodine and thyroid) If you dont have a background in biology, just start- Start and learn . Keep a notebook in whichyou write the things you learn and and to keep track of abbreviations and to increase your vocabulary. A little time every day, understanding physiology, microbiology - until one day you will realize that you understand a LOT
In my lifetime I have found that it is not uncommon for people to worry a great deal about some future feared situation, and in the end, it does not arise. God bless you all and God bless AOA

I am glad to see you are back Bob. I hope you are doing well. We - I missed you.

My son is 35 and my daughter 40.
It only took me 14 years after the event for me to realize he had been diagnosed with autism.
I was not aware that PDD-NOS was autism. Silly me I thought we came close with the last reaction , by the skin of our teeth and we had some damage, but not autism.

He was standing yesterday and his ankles come out in the strangest angle - He is standing on the inside of his feet. I am thinking about pushing him to go work in this factory were they make pressure sprays. It is local, and not driving very much. I have heard they are constantly moving. His other job he sat the whole time - as a general clerk. That is not healthy to sit all day long.
However can he stay on his feet all day long?

Welcome back, Bob! So wonderful to have you back commenting here at AoA! Smile on my face :)

No one Kim. No one is going to clean the mold out of your daughter’s water bottle straw as You do. You better stick around.

Thank you for all you do!!!!

Donna L.

I live in perpetual fear of this, too, Kim. Ten million tiny little details every single day and night, that nobody on earth would ever do for my son after I'm gone.

And Bob --- I am SO relieved to see you back here again!!! I was so worried!

Kim for BOB

Welcome back BOB! XOX Kim

Bob. So pleased to see a comment from you again. I do hope yoou are back fighting fit.

There is nothing new under the son. We must walk by faith.

22And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive....

1And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi.
2And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months.
3And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river's brink.
4And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him.
5And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river's side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it.
6And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him...

Almost 40 years .. my non-verbal beloved grandson is now 21 years old ... and the ONLY thing that has been done in all those years is to create AWARENESS that autism now diagnosed for 1 in 35 .. a never ending increase from 1 IN thousands a few decades ago.

I have no good answers. But I hear, and feel, the question deeply....
"Good homes & houses", and "good people", are the simplistic answers, but that's also saying much less than it seems. I think we have all the "tools", all the "pieces", everything we WOULD need, and DO need, but it's not connected properly enough. The BROKEN SYSTEM could be repaired, if we had the political will. It's not lack of money. It's a lack of oversight and accountability of the system. Everybody points fingers, or else assumes it's somebody else's job. It's all about the money, the paycheck.
We HAVE a system-centered-system, and a process-centered-process....
We NEED a services-centered-system, and a people-centered-process...
See the difference?

Kim-I also worry about who will care for my son and all his special needs when I am gone. It is causing me a great deal of stress as my son is an adult now too. I am still praying every day that by some miracle a cure will be found to save him and all the others who are suffering with autism.
