No Cup of Kindness From Some NYT Commenters

A8FF4599-D57E-4219-9C7E-4C3B74E7BE01  Holy, cow, the generation that demands we accept everyone, love everyone, let everyone choose everything about themselves, put mental health first, eradicate bullies, and sing Kumbaya before breakfast showed their colors on a New York Times Facebook post about the Men's Swimming Relay win. One swimmer with his back to the camera had cupping marks on his back. As soon as I saw the large circles I said, "Oh! He uses cupping, that's cool!"  It turns out that many swimmers use cupping as part of their training regimen, including Michael Phelps when he was competing. I do not use cupping unless you count a Farberware percolator pot full of coffee every day. But I know what it is. And I know for some people, it's part of their health maintenance.  I ACCEPT that.  I too am someone who wants to love everyone, let everyone choose everything about and for themselves, put mental and physical health first, eradicate bullies. I draw the line at singing Kumbaya before breakfast because I was never a fan of the 70s "Folk Mass," in Church.

Then.....  I read the comments.

When you want to cheer the US team, but the swimmer marred by worthless cupping treatments makes you cringe instead.
Man in woman swimsuitHow horrible that this guy believes in the woo of "cupping," the bruising on his back.
Great, more athletes promoting that “cupping” BS. Hickies don’t make you swim faster!!
Cupping. How useless.
Cupping is still a thing? That’s too bad.

I can't take anyone seriously when this level of dismissiveness for personal choice is condoned. Athletes have used natural healthcare and diet forever to add any edge to their training. Looking at you Tom Brady. If he had come out in a women's swimsuit, he'd have been cheered not jeered. Come on, folks. Take a hard look at what is happening.

"Someone's crying Lord..."  Me.

Gary Ogden,

I have a stainless steel percolator. If I remember correctly, my husband and I purchased it at either Target or Bed, Bath & Beyond.

Bob;
It is kind of like acupuncture.
I saw some cups in an acupuncture office when I took my husband.
He is on myrophine, and we have to go all the way to a major city , once a month to get a prescription at the pain clinic.

This acquired mitochondria, AKA (high SED rates), AKA fibromyalgia AKA high inflammation is very painful.

So I thought we would try acupuncture.
I ordered a book on it, and read through it all, you can do pressure points instead of a needle, or put this flame in a cup and put it on the skin, and when it burns up all the oxygen; it causes a vacuum, and sucks on the skin below.

The acupuncture gal went to a accredited college for it. Only a few in the United States, one is at Columbus, Ohio. It is a two year training program, I think? They have to get a licensee and all that.

Does it work?

Well, they say it takes more than one session. That one session cost 400 dollars or maybe it was five or six? I forget.

But that is when I bought the book and looks as using pressure with my fingers instead. . Messaging period though helps. My guess the rest is hooey?

But myrophine is hooey too. .

"Woo"? Glad to see the PR arm of the Skeptics is ever-vigilant in their self-appointed duty of telling everybody what to think and what to do. But because they all have tin ears they use hyperbole like "horrible" which turns everybody off.

Gary Ogden

Kim: You must be the last person left who uses a percolator. Haven't seen one in decades.

"Mental health first" this non sense has gone to far anything that makes some one sad or mad like a family member's death or academic failure is now view in a mental health context. DJ Jaffe a mental health advocate who writes on a website called mental-illness-policy.org talks about the absurd over diagnosis of mental illness and how it harms the seriously mentally ill and how to help that seriously mentally ill population by Gasp reopening mental hospitals.
"Cupping" is quackery and it may contain illegal performance enhancers that cannot be used in athletics.

I'm sure someone else will explain it better, but cupping is a procedure where a person places cups on their back and applies suction. I think it is supposed to draw toxins out of the body, and there are other benefits that I don't remember. It leaves marks on the back like the ones you see on the young swimmer in the picture. Many acupuncturists practice cupping. The primitive way of applying the suction was with candles, but there are much easier (and less flammable) ways of applying suction now. I wouldn't mind trying it, but it is relatively expensive and takes time away from other treatments. My acupuncturist doesn't recommend it for everyone anyway.

For Bob:

https://www.webmd.com/balance/guide/cupping-therapy

"During both types of cupping, your therapist will put a flammable substance such as alcohol, herbs, or paper in a cup and set it on fire. As the fire goes out, they put the cup upside down on your skin.

"As the air inside the cup cools, it creates a vacuum. This causes your skin to rise and redden as your blood vessels expand. The cup is generally left in place for up to 3 minutes.

"[...] One report, published in 2015 in the Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine, notes that it could help with acne, herpes zoster, and pain management.

"That’s similar to the findings from a 2012 report, published in PLoS One. Australian and Chinese researchers reviewed 135 studies on cupping. They concluded that cupping therapy may be effective when people also get other treatments, like acupuncture or medications, for various diseases and conditions."

Sometimes I wonder if commenters like those are paid trolls or just deeply unhappy people. I recall a fair amount of shade being thrown at Michelle Wie when she used kinesiotherapy tape--people said she was just doing it to intimidate other competitors--but I've used it myself, as a runner, and it works. And even if it hadn't worked for me, I'd be able to accept that it might work for her. Heck, even if it "worked" for her as a placebo, where would the harm be? Aren't there enough real problems in the world?

It's hard for me to imagine being intolerant enough of my fellow man to mock him for finding a non-mainstream therapy that helped him, and paying for it with his own dollars (not insurance). God help us all.

Have a good day, Kim. You're one of the really good ones. I wish there were more.

Bob Moffit

Sorry but I do not know what "cupping" is or what it does to help swimmer?
