The Latest Autism Gene Study: NIH Director Collins Hails Deliberate Waste of Time, Money and Lives...

image from encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.comBy John Stone

In a short article in Southern Maryland Chronicle a few days ago the Head of the National Institutes of Health, Francis Collins, hailed the latest autism gene study under the title 'Largest-Ever Genetic Study of Autism Yields New Insights'. Perhaps the message here is that in order to fight crime the government has decided to investigate the victims not the perpetrators (actually it has been doing this for three decades). In 2006 as Head of the Human Genome Project Collins told Congress:

"But genes alone do not tell the whole story. Recent increases in chronic diseases like diabetes, childhood asthma, obesity or autism cannot be due to major shifts in the human gene pool as those changes take much more time to occur. They must be due to changes in the environment, including diet and physical activity, which may produce disease in genetically predisposed persons. Therefore, GEI (the Genes and Environment Initiative) will also invest in innovative new technologies/sensors to measure environmental toxins, dietary intake and physical activity, and using new tools of genomics, proteomics, and understanding metabolism rates to determine an individual's biological response to those influences."

References on-line to GEI seem to peter out round about 2008 (perhaps they were in danger of finding something). So, 14 years ago Collins warned that there would be no material result from this kind of research and it is what the government have been doing ever since, more or less as an employment scheme (typically, the new study boasts nearly two hundred authors). As Eisenhower said to no avail in his farewell speech six decades ago:

"Today, the solitary inventor, tinkering in his shop, has been overshadowed by task forces of scientists in laboratories and testing fields. In the same fashion, the free university, historically the fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery, has experienced a revolution in the conduct of research. Partly because of the huge costs involved, a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity....

"The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present and is gravely to be regarded.

"Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific/ technological elite."

Now - with whatever insights their may be into gene risk association or even patterns of damage - is that all the NIH have really succeeded in doing is  generating  a lot more data: the new study is not only "the largest ever" it is "the largest-ever" in NIH speak (and with a huge cast), but in terms of government approved science we are not an inch nearer discovering what is driving the autism epidemic, just as Collins told Congress it would not all those years ago: it is all one giant step for mankind to nowhere. Meanwhile, the autism rate in schools is perhaps 4 or 5 times higher than it was then: it is rather hard to tell because NIH and CDC have failed to monitor it in any systematic way.

When I started out on this trail I recall a meeting at a freezing local church hall in early 1997 addressed by Paul Shattock, now of the ESPA Autism Research Unit, Sunderland. One of the many and terrible things Paul told us was that 90% off the funding into the causes of autism was being swallowed by useless gene research, meanwhile the problem was ten times as bad as ten years before. He foretold exactly was going to play out. How appalling and cynical this charade has been.

If you want to turn a disaster into a catastrophe and catastrophe into a cataclysm send for Collins!!!

Cia;
Arsenic is one of those environmental trigger pullers too.
Is it really just taking the right kind of genes to resist? Or are those other 36 just on borrowed time?

Grace Green made a good point, the whole of us are dumbing down. .

It may seem to you looking at others from afar that they are well. Those 36 have no problems.

This is even harder to spot in areas of larger populations, but in smaller populations, such problems are obvious so much sooner.

Those other 36, that are competent, are rare in my community. Rare is some one you can hire to put a new roof on your home, rare is a competent plumber, Rare is a competent person.

And then Cia you used that word "accumulative"

How soon did the generations in your family start taking the pertussis shot? For that matter the typhoid vaccine, or something that you never dreamed about them taking. Things that would surprise and shock you?

I would never have known that my mother born in 1929 in the back woods walked a long way to meet the nurse to get a series of the pertussis vaccine. Not the D or the T in it, just the P. She already had the D, the T, the small pox, and every fall she took a typhoid shot. I now know she always had a mood disorder and so did the rest of her brothers and sisters. How on earth did the Europeans come to this country and procreate as well as they did, with mood disorders?

Without her telling me about Dr. Pinkleton and his nurse showing up every year to give out Typhoid shots, I would never have realized just how many typhoid shots her community received.

Their little world, their community of a school, post office, a couple of stores, lumber mill, a grain mill, all of farmers and timber are all gone now. Their community of many people living along the tributaries that emptied into their creek, is for me a community frozen in time.

Buried on a wooded hill that is so steep that I have to grab trees and branches to pull myself up is a grave yard is full of strange stories. Not just babies born to early, or women that died in childbirth, and from hard work, but a few stories of young women that had periods that would not stop. A few young people that just died after some fainting spells. Dad's 25 year old cousin is buried there. He watched him die from what he did not know. Mother said it was leukemia since his brother died 20 years later with the same symptoms.
Mother's best friend had fits (seizures) . IT just goes on and on. The Great Depression years when life up there had no changed much for decades. Then suddenly the birth rate plummeted. In two generations going from 12 kids, to two, or even none.

I think that the more telling point in this environment/genes debate is that we're only looking at the noticeably injured people rather than the vast majority who, as Dr. Wakefield put it, have a few points shaved off their IQs. People like myself and many in my family, who struggle daily with the cognitive and medical symptoms of autism, can't even get a diagnosis. And as we all know there are many other conditions caused by vaccines. I would say that in the last ten years before I retired as a piano teacher (in 2016) ALL of my pupils were autistic to some extent - I could tell by the sorts of difficulties they were having with cognition, memory, comprehension, communication etc. Was this coincidence or what?

Cia

Benedetta,

You’re assuming that it’s off/on, you have the gene, you react, you don’t have the gene, you don’t. But you said that since it’s environmental, everyone gets zapped sooner or later.

It’s more that child A has a very sensitive genetic profile: he gets one vaccine, or one hep-B or one DTaP, and he reacts with a disability. Child B can get ten and seems to be fine, but the eleventh disables him. Child C seems to do fine with fifteen shots, but the sixteenth disables him. In 1980, children got five DPTs, sometimes six; four polios; one or two MMRs. Some were disabled by vaccines, but not that many. As they gave more and more and more shots, more and more children reached the genetic set point beyond which they reacted. Most children can take even fifteen shots, but fewer and fewer are able to keep going indefinitely without overt disabling reactions. Why would it just be off/on, you do or you don’t? It’s cumulative, and each person has a different genetically- set tolerance level.

cia

Benedetta,

Everyone has his or her tipping point, and after that point is reached, he will succumb to overt damage. The tipping point is set genetically. That's why, while tens of thousands of babies have reacted to the hep-B vaccine at birth with autism, millions have not. Nearly every last child who was in my daughter's classes had gotten all of the vaccines, but they all talked, laughed, interacted, played sports, etc. etc. Because they did not have the genetic predisposition to react to vaccines with autism.

A lot of people have a very high tipping point. But nearly every person I have ever known got all the DPTs, polios, and those younger than I got the MMR as well. Very few of them appear injured at all. And none of them has ever gotten diphtheria, tetanus, or polio. That's what most people see and what they want, and as far as that goes, it's accurate. Maybe they're dyslexic, maybe they have asthma because of their vaccines, but they haven't realized that.

Benedetta, if it's not genetic, why does one in 36 children now react to one or more vaccines with autism, but 35 do not? What was different about my daughter? Why did she react to the hep-B vaccine given the first day of life with encephalitic screaming syndrome for four days and nights, when most doctors and parents have never seen or heard of that, even though they've given their children the same vaccine on the first day of life? I'd say it's because she's my daughter: I reacted to my first DPT at three months old with screaming syndrome for several days, and my brother reacted to his with months of screaming. Both of us emerged with Asperger's, maybe because we were not newborns when we got our first vaccine. One of his sons has it too, because we have a genetic profile which has caused our vaccine reactions and Asperger's/autism when most people do not.

I don't understand why this is a point of such contention. I'd say it's obvious. Why is it undesirable to recognize this?

Benedetta

Cia;

Philosophically you can look at it that way.

But when the bare truth is looked at; some people react sooner, get sick sooner and die sooner to an environmental insult than others do, but in the end it is still an environmental insult, which makes it just a matter of when, and not if for everyone else.

Once again; if it was just a genetic problem with the trigger pulling environment then we would not have gone from 1 out of 11,000 in 1960s to today's 1 out of 39.

Does that sound genetic to you? Are you saying to yourself yeah it does, cause it ain't 100 percent? Really?

Remember they have to make the vaccines till at least they don't kill and maimed for a while after the event. People that worked with Aluminum dust, or talcum powder takes years to succumb to their little genetic weakness. Does that really make it genetic, or just a slow poison?

But one should not get distracted by the fallibility of ordinary people when one considers the malevolence of corporations. You can feel sad about people who gamble, but angry about the people who exploit them.

Just a couple of points to add to this discussion:

1. Unavoidably unsafe-- “The Committee has set forth Comment K in this bill because it intends that the principle in Comment K regarding ‘unavoidably unsafe’ products, i.e., those products which in the present state of human skill and knowledge cannot be made safe, apply to the vaccines covered in the bill and that such products not be the subject of liability in the tort system.”
2. "Cannot be made safe," why? Because of the individual genetics; because of the ingredients; because of manufacturing? (Because Merck, Glaxo Smith Kline, Sanofi, Pfizer are felons?) Because of the FDA. All of the above?
3. More than 20+ years ago when the DPT was the issue, before Wakefield, I remember a pro-vaccine doctor saying, "if we screen all the people who could react to the DPT, there could be no mass vaccination program." There could be no mass vaccination program.
4. I remember the media would love to interview some old geezer who was having his 90th birthday and would ask him what was the secret to a long life. He was a smoker, a drinker, and chased women. I would say he had some outstanding genetics and good fortune. Where as some 40 or 50 year old would die of smoking related lung cancer. I guess he forgot to drink and chase women.

Another well-known physician famous for his advice on preventing and treating autism, Dr. Jerry Kartzinel, in Healing and Preventing Autism, p. 299, gave two trees with numerous conditions on each caused by certain genetic profiles. The first was the methylation (faulty methylation, which is designed to detoxify) tree, with depression, Alzheimer's, alcoholism, constipation, suicide, schizophrenia, biopolar disorder, dementia, autism, ADD, and ADHD. He says: "We can do a genetic evaluation that can clearly demonstrate if a child may have difficulty with methylation, and thus trouble detoxifying the boy. It doesn't require much blood. This test will actually look and see which of the enzymes that drive the methylation pathway may be lacking. It has not been done yet to newborns. Everyone can be poisoned; just some are easier to poison than others."

The other tree shows common auto-immune problems, again, springing from a genetic predisposition to have auto-immune conditions set into motion, usually by vaccines. Leaky gut, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, Crohn's disease, inflammatory bowel disease, lupus, celiac disease, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, MBP antibodies, rheumatoid arthritis, Graves disease, Addison's disease, and thyroid disease. I think at this time we can now add autism to this chart, both a problem of acute and chronic inflammation of the brain, with vaccines usually the factor which activated the autoimmune reactions.

cia

John,

Blame is probably not the best word to use as it makes people defensive. Maybe it would be better to say "taking responsibility for the outcomes of one's decisions in the knowledge of frequent outcomes." While some smokers can smoke ten packs a day for sixty years and never get lung disease, most cannot. Good genes. A few people get lung cancer despite never having smoked a cigarette in their lives. Problematic genes. But large numbers of people in the middle eventually get lung cancer as the result of having smoked. I don't know what else you can say.

While sometimes there are bad vaccine lots, as in the Cutter incident in which the polio vaccine was not properly prepared and many children got polio as a result, in most cases the same vaccine from the same lot is given to many vaccine recipients, but only a few have disabling or fatal reactions. The reason that it was they and not others is usually for genetic reason.

Dr. Moskowitz on 126 of Vaccination, said: "With autoimmunity as possibly the underlying mechanism by which vaccines do everything they do, good and bad alike, why not screen children for evidence of it in the form of C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), antinuclear antibodies (ANA), and perhaps other typical markers at suitable intervals after their vaccinations? Although by no means infallible, and possibly subject to both false positives and negatives, just as in clinical medicine, it would nevertheless be a simple, interesting, and inexpensive test of that hypothesis, whether or not those testing positive actually develop symptoms at the time."

The factors resulting in elevated levels of these markers in some children but not in others would be for mainly genetic reasons. But it is a more indirect and more accurate way to identify those at greatly increased risk for vaccine reaction. Don't look for GENE X, look for genetically-designed factors which increase the chances of a hyperinflammatory and disabling reaction to vaccines.

It is a mistake to assume that the cause of vaccine reaction is usually idiopathic, of unknown and random origin. People will always say, Well, I went with my neighbor to get our identically-aged infants vaccinated, same age, same sex, same vaccines, same vials, and hers did fine, no reaction, but mine had ...... reaction. Why? It's NOT going to be Hers had Cheerios for breakfast while mine had Frosted Flakes. The cause in nearly all cases is genetic in origin, NOT faulty genes, but genes programmed to react swiftly and vigorously to an invading pathogen.

Cia

Benedetta,

You are not separating the theories of certain genes causing autism automatically all by themselves (if this ever happens, it is very rare) and that of certain genetic profiles creating a predisposition to sometimes react to one or more vaccines if they are received. If they are not received, then there’s no problem.

It is a mistake to say that autism being genetic means that there was an environmental insult many generations ago. That is to view the genetic difference as a negative trait when there is no reason to believe that it is negative except for reacting when vaccines are given. A vigorous inflammatory reaction when invaders of an unknown nature infiltrate the immune system was of great survival benefit in Northern Europe, where our ancestors were from. An unknown invader like aluminum, designed to persist for many years, constantly irritating the immune system into reaction, will certainly cause syndromes of autoimmune disease in those with these stalwart defending genes, but back in the day, saved millions of my forebears from dying of diseases common in the northern Atlantic area. I’m going to continue in another comment before I lose this one.

Benedetta

"Genes loads the gun, and the vaccines (environment) pulls the trigger."

We all have heard that.
Looking at it another way: When I was going to school, the biology professors loved to ask again, and again:
"Which is more important; genes or the environment?"

I was a baby back then, and it took a while to have the final answer to their question, and it really is not that hard.

. The environment is every thing. With out the environment there would be no genes. If they say it is genetic; then there was an environmental insult that acted on the genes; generations ago. What was that environmental insult?

it is as Mark Blaxill says: "There is no such thing as a genetic epidemic."

As autism, autoimmune numbers rise, and SAT scores plummet, and as mental health collapses as people seek treatment in a cocktails of illegal drugs from poppy fields, to Coco groves on mountain sides, to meth labs, to the distilling alcohol factories, all the way to fluoride riddled serotonin reuptake pharma drugs.

Nothing to do with the genes, and all about the environment. That is why my friend, Cia that they don't bother to look at your family's genes.

cia

They haven't looked at genes very hard. They could look to see how the genes of me, my daughter, my brother, and nephew differ from those of undamaged vaccine recipients, but my father, mother, and uncle died from their vaccine-induced disabilities and are not available for testing. Yet no one has ever proposed doing so. All they've done is a song and dance pretending to look. Dr. Moskowitz reported that they have found nucleotide sequences which identify those likely to react with diabetes, I think asthma, and other conditions. He suggested three simple tests to look for those with markers for excessive inflammatory response to vaccines. They could conduct a study, and correlate those with these markers to those reported to have developed autism as well. They have not done so. Why not? But look at my family. My brother and I both reacted to our first DPT, I with screaming syndrome for days (vaccine encephalitis), and he with beating his head on the bars of his kiddy koop and screaming for months. We both have Asperger's. One of his children has Asperger's, and developed bowel disease after a high fever with bronchitis. My daughter reacted to the hep-B at birth with screaming syndrome, to the DTaP at eighteen months with losing her words and being diagnosed with autism two months later. She had a high fever at seven which started her bowel disease. I reacted to a tetanus booster with brachial plexus neuropathy, both arms paralyzed for several days. Later a high fever started the symptoms which would be diagnosed by MRI as sometimes-paralyzing MS. My uncle, exposed to mercury from his mother who was a dentist and the diphtheria vaccine, developed schizophrenia after falling asleep in the sun on a boat dock in New Orleans. I have a friend who had a friend who developed schizophrenia after going into a hot sauna (heat activates stored mercury). An article at AoA several years ago gave the name of a Canadian researcher who found that all schizophrenics who had been tested were sky-high in mercury. My mother reacted to a diphtheria vaccine at four with Asperger's and bowel disease. My father developed hyperthyroidism, an autoimmune disease, usually caused by vaccine reactions. Many years later he reacted to a flu vaccine with paralysis and symptoms of mercury poisoning, also the autoimmune anemia discussed her last month and jaundice. My mother reacted to the flu vaccines with Alzheimer's, and, ultimately, paralysis. My brother fainted at work a number of times fifteen years ago, and while jogging. POTS, another autoimmune disease, caused by his yearly flu vaccines. Both my mother and my brother were given MRIs to test for multiple sclerosis.

This goes way beyond unrelated unfortunate incidents. I think it is clear that we have genes which caused the excessive inflammatory reaction to the vaccines to which we reacted. And, without testing us for it, no one will ever figure out what the genes responsible might be.

John Stone

Cia

No, I think that would be a very poor way to proceed, and it is not the purpose - after three decades of smoke and mirrors they have made zero progress with identifying who should not have vaccines, and there may be plenty of other environmental and health issues that lead to bad outcomes (or for that matter variations in manufacturing standards, storage, random molecular action etc). Genes are pretty much a red-herring - research originally started by the tobacco industry on the basis that you could deflect attention from tobacco if you could show that those who got lung cancer were at fault through their genes.

John,
Of course I agree. They know perfectly well that it's vaccines pulling the trigger. The first order of business should be to identify the genetic profiles which predispose to vaccine reaction. Of course then the public would be in an uproar and aghast at so many decades of lying about this. And set adrift in a naughty world with no assurances of safety and health for anyone. But it's still the case that we should pursue the truth wherever it takes us. It's still the case that most people get a lot of vaccines and don't react discernibly with any condition on the autism spectrum. If we deny that it's genes, for the most part, then we prevent the identification of those most at risk from vaccines, though everyone is damaged to some degree by any vaccine. (But I would still get the rabies vaccine if I were bitten by a probably rabid animal: in some cases taking your chances with the vaccine is better than the alternative, certain death.) But the typical public still likes to say Well, I got all the vaccines on the list in -, and look how great I turned out. They're usually sympathetic to the concept of allergic children inhaling an atom of peanut dust and dying from it, they need to be introduced to that of many people having genes which predispose us to an excessive inflammatory reaction when they get vaccines. Right now most people think that vaccines are nothing but sterile water with two or three weakened disease pathogens, not enough to cause illness, just enough to create antibodies in an amazing magic trick, thanks to human brilliance and ingenuity. While of course the authors of this study were malign liars dragging a red herring across the road, we should absolutely not discount the role of genes in vaccine reaction. If you refine the concept to genetic predisposition to reaction, and the more vaccines you give, the more people reach their personal threshold for reaction, then even the stup-dest of the public can understand that and understand that it's not a mystery at all that the autistic population has quintupled just since C was born in 2000, when it was one in 150 and already a cause for alarm and panic in the streets.

John Stone

Cia

But I don’t think the licensing and recommending agencies should be playing roulette with our children, and denying harm.

cia

Genes load the gun, vaccines pull the trigger. That's why autism often runs in families. Why so many are getting autism now when in previous generations the numbers were far lower. Everyone has a genetically-determined threshhold, but once that threshold is reached, then he succumbs to overt vaccine damage. Like with the propensity of elderly Chinese men to develop fatal cases of novel coronavirus, for genetic reasons. This is not insulting of anyone, but indicates directions for further study. They could EASILY run tests indicating genetic propensity for markers of excessive inflammatory responses to certain triggers, not as a way of insulting anyone, but as a way of identifying those most likely to react severely to vaccines. Of course vaccines should always be a choice, never mandatory, there could never be a guarantee that a vaccine will not harm the recipient. But surely it would be a good thing to just release from recommended (or mandated) vaccination people like everyone in my family, all of whom have had disabling reactions to vaccines.

Grace Green

I agree that blaming diet and lack of exercise are just excuses. I have repeatedly been accused of neglecting both of these issues when it was known that I was growing my own organic food! (Exercise and good food.) They have also said that not all autistic people are the same, and I've been pondering that. Other genetic conditions, such as Down's syndrome or Rett's, cause a characteristic appearance which is unmistakable, but autism doesn't result in any such features, another sign if any were needed that it's not in our genes!

Yes, of course, even in 2006 Collins was not going to mention vaccination but the presence of toxic chemicals in the food chain is an evident problem and naturally he failed to do anything about that either.

Even in his 2006 statement, Francis Collins’s thinking is fuzzy. He lumps autism in with other diseases in proposing environmental causes. But neither of his suggestions makes sense for autism because autism starts early in life. Reduced physical activity is a non starter; two year olds are a whirlwind of activity. It’s also difficult to make a case for food. Two year olds haven’t been eating processed foods for a long period of time, and food would take time to cause disease. Just obfuscation and parent shaming.

Do not donate to Autism Speaks

@ go Trump...yup, AS looks as if they are just rebranding the idea from years ago. Any way AS can rake in more money the better. Look closely at the people who work for that organization. Always traveling and living it up despite some of them having autistic kids at home (who watches them all the time? Nannies no doubt...more money), wearing top of the line clothes, perfect hair at all times, living in the most expensive towns, vacationing (wth is that? must be nice!), constantly showcasing their money. Anyone who donates to them should really have their heads examined. While most people with kids on the spectrum sit home struggling to make ends meet, these people are living the high life on donations from people who believe their hype.

go Trump

A few years back, Autism Speaks was going to set up a DNA database of over 10,000 people with a worldwide search system where anyone could sign up and "Search for the Autism gene." (which does not exist)

They of course, first needed lots and lots of money donated for the gene project. Anyone been over to their gene lab lately? Do they give tours ?

I would guess the main office for Autism Speaks does not even know where it is located.

About replicating useless results, and replicating them over and over --

the same thing has been happening for years in Alzheimer's so-called research. Millions of dollars of taxpayer money plus private money, wasted on "the amyloid theory."

Talk about slow learners. How about never-learners? Seems just the same as finding "the gene" for autism -- after hundreds have been found. It a system-wide problem.

Francis Crick reflected on the early days in Cambridge. . .

when it was SO easy to steal research from someone else !!

Never, never give Crick and Watson full credit. They absolutely do not deserve it. Disgusting.

Science is pure. People are corrupt.

Not long before he died, Francis Crick while still working in full time research in La Jolla reflected to me just what a great time it had been in the early days in Cambridge when there was such a level of academic freedom that there was not even a need to write grant proposals.

In 1974 Richard Feynman gave a commencement address:

'I would like to add something that’s not essential to the science, but something I kind of believe, which is that you should not fool the layman when you’re talking as a scientist. I’m not trying to tell you what to do about cheating on your wife, or fooling your girlfriend, or something like that, when you’re not trying to be a scientist, but just trying to be an ordinary human being. We’ll leave those problems up to you and your rabbi. I’m talking about a specific, extra type of integrity that is not lying, but bending over backwards to show how you’re maybe wrong, that you ought to do when acting as a scientist. And this is our responsibility as scientists, certainly to other scientists, and I think to laymen....

'I say that’s also important in giving certain types of government advice. Supposing a senator asked you for advice about whether drilling a hole should be done in his state; and you decide it would he better in some other state. If you don’t publish such a result, it seems to me you’re not giving scientific advice. You’re being used. If your answer happens to come out in the direction the government or the politicians like, they can use it as an argument in their favor; if it comes out the other way, they don’t publish it at all. That’s not giving scientific advice.

'So I wish to you—I have no more time, so I have just one wish for you—the good luck to be somewhere where you are free to maintain the kind of integrity I have described, and where you do not feel forced by a need to maintain your position in the organization, or financial support, or so on, to lose your integrity. May you have that freedom.'

Before public health can be rescued (although anything now will come too late for millions of children) the entire structure of funding of medical research will have to be rebuilt to allow that same academic freedom while tailored for a world that is a lot more commercial. Such men will have their counterparts in the modern generation if the opportunities and facilities are provided.

Paul Shattock marvelous man very helpful when we were starting out kind words of wisdom.

I wonder if the gene science have a vaccinated and non vaccinated gene pool study or is it not needed beause our genes mutate better with heavy metals and chlorine and all the toxic vaccine contents as it would be unfair to us unvaccinated.

Chops gene pool like lots of chlorine in the pool plus mercury, big al, yup!

Many genetic variants have been linked to autism, but only a handful are potent enough to induce the disorder on their own. Among these variants, mutations in a gene called Shank3 are among the most common which accounts for 1–2% of all ASD cases. While mutations in these genes are generally rare, Zinc deficiency is not, and via interactions with the proteins encoded by these genes also leads to the development of autism and links many environmental to genetic causes. A loss of synaptic Shank3 comparable to that observed in Shank3 knock-out mice was detected in immunohistochemical and biochemical analyses of zinc deficient animals. So someone with a zinc deficiency would experience the same problems as someone with the rarer Shank3 mutation problems. Zinc shapes the properties of developing synapses via Shank proteins.

During the acute phase of an inflammatory response such as from infection, inflammation and vaccination the cytokine interleukin 6 (IL-6) is released which induces the expression of α2-macroglobulin (A2M) and Metallothionein which sequesters zinc and consequently reduces zinc availability. In pregnancy it induces both maternal and fetal hypozincemia. Interleukin-6 regulates the zinc transporter Zip14 in the liver and contributes to the hypozincemia of the acute-phase response.

Propionic acid, a short chain fatty acid, is used as an autism model in mice and rats. Increased propionic acid production and a corresponding reduction in butyric acid were also associated with zinc deficiency in young lambs https://academic.oup.com/jn/article-abstract/82/1/41/4779372 Its now been shown that treatment with a selective PPAR-α agonist (activator), fenofibrate significantly attenuated the propionic acid induced-social impairment, repetitive behavior, hyperactivity, anxiety and low exploratory activity. Even better, Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), a substance that is naturally produced in the body, not to be confused with another supplement phenylethlamine, which is also abbreviated as PEA also has shown to reverse autism in mice via PPARa activation and available over the counter. Upon PEA treatment the overall microbial community of BTBR mice was restructured and resulted significantly different from that of untreated BTBR mice. It was able to restore hippocampal BDNF signalling pathway, and improve mitochondrial dysfunction, both pathological aspects, known to be consistently associated with ASDs. Furthermore, it reduced the overall inflammatory state of BTBR mice, reducing the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines at hippocampal, serum, and colonic level. Significant reductions of all cytokines TNFα, IL-1β, and IL-6 were found in BTBR PEA mice compared to BTBR group (It reduced cytokines both in the brain and the gut). A significant increase in gut permeability was shown in vivo in BTBR mice. The analysis of gut permeability and the expression of colonic tight junctions showed a reduction of leaky gut in PEA-treated BTBR mice. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0889159118305488

Zinc increases the gene expression of A20 and PPAR-α, the two zinc finger proteins with anti-inflammatory properties and a key finding is that all PPAR agonists (activators) tested lost their potency to downregulate the TNF-α–induced inflammatory response in zinc-deficient cells. However, if zinc was added back, all PPAR agonists significantly downregulated the TNF-α–mediated induction of inflammatory transcription factors NF-κB and AP-1 and significantly reduced the expression of their target genes, VCAM-1 and IL-6. In regards to Autism, I have compiled my ongoing research here so far I was doing occasionally on the side, take a look at the zinc/shank3 - butyrate/propionate section to start. https://tgl.ink/v0VrgZ

A quick review just now of my own research so far shows the development of autism and its rise is impacted most by nutritional status with an added emphasis on Zinc, along with Vitamin A and Magnesium. Some of the many other Influential contributors I found contributing to the rise in autism include intake of the food additive calcium propionate (E282) in processed foods (propionic acid source), glyphosate exposure, heavy metal exposure especially of mercury, cadmium and lead (all lower zinc among many effects), aluminum, vaccination, EMF exposure, pesticide exposure, higher fluoride exposure, air pollution, use of acetaminophen, dental amalgams in pregnant mother (emf including wifi increases mercury release), sugar intake, Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) (fire retardants), excessive synthetic folic acid intake during pregnancy, excessive iron intake (these lower zinc absorption), nanosized titanium dioxide (TiO2), thickeners and emulsifiers, factors that modify gut flora composition, infections, immune activation events and oxidative stress from the second trimester of pregnancy through early childhood.

This is quite interesting, I didn't know this existed at all , did you ?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandemic_severity_index

The pandemic severity index (PSI) is a proposed classification scale for reporting the severity of influenza pandemics in the United States. The PSI was accompanied by a set of guidelines intended to help communicate appropriate actions for communities to follow in potential pandemic situations.[1] Released by the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on 1 February 2007, the PSI was designed to resemble the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale classification scheme.[2][3]

CDC Pandemic Severity Index chart[1]

1 less than 0.1% seasonal flu and Swine Flu[5][9]

2 0.1–0.5% Asian flu and Hong Kong flu

3 0.5–1%

4 1.0%–2.0%

5 2.0% or higher Spanish flu

---------------------------------------------

I would imagine the Autism Pandemic is a Grade 9 if the truth were ever told by the CDC people ?

NIH: Never Improving Health

Excellent, John.

I'd have to quibble with your wording on just one sentence: "but in terms of government approved science we are not an inch nearer discovering what is driving the autism epidemic,"

But we do have government approved science that shows what is driving the autism epidemic. It's just that the government fiddled with the results (while Rome burns). Maybe that should be the instrument Collins plays.

no thanks Judith

And there's a sucker born every minute. This one happens to work for Autism Speaks so...no surprise there. Spark for Autism...test your genes through spit. Seriously, these are the parents who feed right into the "it's all genetic" mentality and make it so difficult for many to see the obvious....vaccines, environment, hormone/endocrine imbalance caused by environment, vaccines, destruction of immunity caused by environment, vaccines and on and on!!
Judith...a mouthpiece for AS and now this! Why am I NOT surprised?! Yet another reason not to donate to that organization.

Sad use of instagram! To promote yet another product that leads us all nowhere.

I don't like any of your rude snarly comments. Makes food want to come back up.
Your music isn't too bad. Have to give you that. But you are certainly no scientist !

How appalling and cynical this charade has been!

John

PS I have added this little reminiscence and one or two other refinements to the article.

I imagine even he knew better.

"They must be due to changes in the environment, including diet and physical activity..."

Actually he left out broadening of diagnostic criteria, increased screening and recognition, diagnostic substitution, etc.

Thank you John, well put as usual!

Not only is Dr. Collins, the NIH and most ASD researchers way off the mark, they are digging a deeper hole. What a joke that is not funny yet still laughable.

I found the article communicated little information except numbers of old genes confirmed, new genes, rare genes, genes for proteins (exomes, 1.5% if our DNA), genes that regulate other genes and genes that overlap with genes of kids with motor and other developmental delays.

Below is the concluding paragraph of Dr. Collins articles.

“Overall, these findings underscore that ASD truly does exist on a spectrum. Indeed, there are many molecular paths to this disorder. The ASC researchers continue to collect samples, so we can expect this list of 102 genes will continue to expand in the future.“

Wow, profound research findings! Digging a deeper hole to nowhere, wasting everyone’s time, careers and still not helping those suffering from ASD.

Thus all this research just confirms his opening statement in the article:

”The wide variability seen among individuals with [ASD]... has also posed a huge challenge for researchers trying to identify underlying genetic and environmental factors.”

Bob Moffit

The valuable time, money, scientific resources … squandered seeking that NON-EXISTANT gene .. to be held responsible for the ever increasing numbers of children being diagnosed autistic is eerily similar to the investigation that OJ Simpson claimed to be conducting to find the REAL KILLERS OF HIS FORMER WIFE.

Fraudulent genetic research is nothing more than a distraction provided to those responsible for the AUTISM EPIDEMIC they have created … as THE TRUE CULPRITS .. the very same as OJ … have known for decades …

""But genes alone do not tell the whole story. Recent increases in chronic diseases like diabetes, childhood asthma, obesity or autism cannot be due to major shifts in the human gene pool as those changes take much more time to occur. They must be due to changes in the environment, including diet and physical activity, which may produce disease in genetically predisposed persons."

GENETIC RESEARCH IS SIMPLY ANOTHER TACTIC IN THEIR NEVER-ENDING .. OVERALL STRATEGY OF … DELAY, DENY AND HOPE THEY DIE

AND THE BAND PLAYS ON AND ON … ON AND ON …
