Monsanto Loses Roundup Cancer Trial
A San Francisco jury returned a verdict today in the case of a former groundskeeper with terminal cancer against Monsanto Company, ordering the agrochemical giant to pay $39.2 million in compensatory damages and $250 million in punitive damages for failing to warn consumers that exposure to Roundup weed killer causes cancer.
Dewayne “Lee” Johnson filed the lawsuit (case no. CGC-16-550128) against St. Louis-based Monsanto Co. on Jan. 28, 2016, alleging exposure to the Roundup herbicide he sprayed while working as a groundskeeper for the Benicia Unified School District caused him to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL).
On June 18, 2018, his case was assigned to Judge Suzanne Ramos Bolanos for the Superior Court of San Francisco, California. Johnson’s case was the first of its kind to proceed to trial due to his terminal diagnosis.
After eight weeks of trial proceedings, the jury found unanimously that Monsanto’s glyphosate-based Roundup weed killer caused Mr. Johnson to develop NHL, and that Monsanto failed to warn of this severe health hazard. Importantly, the jury also found that Monsanto acted with malice, oppression or fraud and should be punished for its conduct.

Monsanto was found liable in a lawsuit and ordered to pay $289 million in damages to a man who alleged the company's glyphosate-based weed-killers, including Roundup, caused him cancer.
A California jury on Friday found Monsanto liable in a lawsuit filed by a man who alleged the company's glyphosate-based weed-killers, including Roundup, caused him cancer and ordered the company to pay $289 million in damages.
The case of school groundskeeper Dewayne Johnson was the first lawsuit alleging glyphosate causes cancer to go to trial. Monsanto, a unit of Bayer AG following a $62.5 billion acquisition by the German conglomerate, faces more than 5,000 similar lawsuits across the United States.
The jury at San Francisco's Superior Court of California deliberated for three days before finding that Monsanto had failed to warn Johnson and other consumers of the cancer risks posed by its weed killers.
It awarded $39 million in compensatory and $250 million in punitive damages.
Judge tells Johnson, a dying man, to accept lower punitive damages or she'll order a new trial.
Irritating (for lack of an appropriate word), watching officials all work for fill-in-the-blank corporation(s):
https://www.theguardian.com/business/2018/oct/22/monsanto-cancer-roundup-weedkiller-judge-denies-appeal
Or do the corporations work for our governments ... if 65% gross income of of all U.S. governmental bodies' funds are investment based?

Is this the mechanism of "agency capture?"
But if so how many get on some level that their paychecks (and insider funding mechanisms) depend more upon the health of stock portfolios than the health of taxpayers (not that they are entirely separated).
Not sure I personally endorse the ending taxation, as things are... though maybe we couldn't be worse off in terms of a captive or melded corporate-fascistic-governmental-oligarchical class...

"lower levels of healthy gut bacteria"? - what does that remind me of?

"Glyphosate is leaving honey bees more susceptible to infection and death, University of Texas at Austin researchers say in a study published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Glyphosate, a herbicide, is the controversial active ingredient in popular weed killers such as Roundup.
Bees that came in contact with the herbicide glyphosate in the study had lower levels of healthy gut bacteria that helps digest food and ward off sickness and were more likely to die from pathogens. About half of the healthy bees survived the introduced pathogen Serratia marcescens. Only a tenth of bees affected by glyphosate survived...."

Italy's anti-vaccine push could spread around the world (you better believe it - scoundrels)
https://www.axios.com/italy-anti-vaccination-law-social-media-populism-d43029bc-31a8-4268-ba2c-30a32497f329.html
When Italy mandated vaccinations last year, opponents responded, "It doesn't end here."
Why it matters: Vaccinations have helped to eradicate a dozen major childhood diseases and are praised as a key advance of the 20th century (BIG LIE TIME !!!). But the anti-establishment wave in Europe and the U.S., plus the ability of social media to spread any opinion, have put new impetus behind the opposition to mandatory inoculation.
Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, tells Axios that two misperceptions fuel the movement:
•Because there's no disease out there, everyone is safe.
•There are significant adverse effects that warrant not getting vaccinated.
The consequences: "I'm really concerned, obviously, about the move Italy made," Fauci says. "It's very ill-advised."

In London they spray this abomination on all the pavements to keep the weeds down.
The councils must be very worried about litigation now.
There are no wasps or bees in London anymore ,
Very few insects at all .
I didnt see a ladybird at all this year.
I never thought I would miss the wasps.
But soon the wasps will miss me !

Judges often reduce jury verdicts. Are they allowed to increase them as well? I'd like to see that happen in this case.
I love how Monsanto is still claiming that hundreds of studies show Roundup to be perfectly safe. Yes, the studies they essentially did themselves.

Nearly everyone who reads this site has read that Vaccines Contain Glyphosate. I am waiting to see the ramifications. With HHS admitting a few weeks ago that they never checked for the safety of vaccines as they were appointed to do and obligated to do since 1986, how can these cancer-causing vaccines be forced and mandated into children in order to go to public school in Ca., Mississippi, West Va, most other US states, Italy, the UK, Ireland, heck, the whole world.

"....Now, in this one case, through the suffering of one man, Monsanto’s secretive strategies have been laid bare for the world to see. Monsanto was undone by the words of its own scientists, the damning truth illuminated through the company’s emails, internal strategy reports and other communications.
The jury’s verdict found not only that Monsanto’s Roundup and related glyphosate-based brands presented a substantial danger to people using them, but that there was 'clear and convincing evidence' that Monsanto’s officials acted with 'malice or oppression' in failing to adequately warn of the risks.
Testimony and evidence presented at trial showed that the warning signs seen in scientific research dated back to the early 1980s and have only increased over the decades. But with each new study showing harm, Monsanto worked not to warn users or redesign its products, but to create its own science to show they were safe. The company often pushed its version of science into the public realm through ghostwritten work that was designed to appear independent and thus more credible. Evidence was also presented to jurors showing how closely the company had worked with Environmental Protection Agency officials to promote the safety message and suppress evidence of harm...."

When people commit murder, they are presecuted. When corporations commit murder, they are fined and not even stopped from murdering again and again. No one stops them
In this country, corporations are only treated as people when it comes to buying elections, not when they commit murder.

Lets be clear--Dewayne Johnson's killer is not only Monsanto, but the EPA who colluded, conspired with Monsanto to kill Mr. Johnson. It is Dr. Lorelei Mucci , of the Harvard School of Public Health, the go to for Monsanto (and other toxic, poisonous industries) looking for an alibi (and paid handsomely) to vouch that Monsanto was no where near the crime scene when Mr. Johnson was repeatedly and with malice poisoned.
Lets just be real damn clear!

Monsato are actually making a valid point when saying that it should not be up to a random jury to determine whether glyphosate causes cancer.
The problems that need to be addressed are industry funding most of the studies into their own products, and the corruption of the government health agencies, which together prevent independent assessment of the issue by scientists.

Such a great victory! I wish Mr Johnson and his family peace. He will never be forgotten! Thank you so very much!!!!
Agreed Mr Moffit and Mrs Hayes! There should be some criminal prosecution! Otherwise it’s just the cost of doing business for these evil people. Down with Monsanto! Down with Merck!

Round Up used to just be sprayed on the unwanted weeds in the fields, by groups of kids working the fields in the summer ... google "bean bar photos"
For the past twenty years or so, it has been sprayed "wall to wall over the top" on every corn, wheat, oats and soybean plant in the nation, as they have "changed the genes" of the plants to "make them immune" to the Round Up herbicide.
Many nations do not want to buy this type of crop from the United States,
A bag of seed corn has gone from about $60 to $300. If you plant the old type ... you will be wiped out by the Round Up chemical drift by your neighbor spraying Round Up on his crop.

I agree with Bob. Where are the prison sentences for Monsanto executives, employees, and bought-off lackeys?
When people knowingly poison others, they must be locked up, not fined. If I knowingly sprayed you with that which would kill you, I would go to jail, so why not those at Monsanto?
Our justice system is in shambles like nearly everything else in our country. The criminals poisoning us and everything we need to survive continue to roam freely, wreaking their havoc, laughing all the way to the bank, and to their pay-off meetings.

While I greatly appreciate the "jury" found that Monsanto acted with malice, oppression or fraud and should be punished for its conduct" … I would much rather have all 50 US State Attorney Generals find exactly what this courageous jury found .. MONSANTO .. SHOULD BE PROSECUTED IN A CRIMINAL COURT .. FOR ACTING WITH MALICE, OPPRESSION OR FRAUD AGAINST THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES.
Enough of million dollar fines .. which is nothing more than a tax write off to Monsanto as the "cost of doing business" .. a corporation like Monsanto acted exactly as any other CRIMINAL ENTERPRISE .. and .. THEY SHOULD BE ACCUSED, PROSECUTED AND PUNISHED WITH LONG SENTENCES IN MAX FEDERAL PRISONS.
