I think the actual culprit behind the rise of autism in the USA will end up being just as controversial as vaccines has been: food fortification with and prenatals containing inferior forms of folate and B12. Support for this idea is found in the lower (and sometimes much, much lower) autism rates in areas and cultures that regularly eat dissolved glycine betaine, which is a substrate of an enzyme that helps make up for problems on a different enzyme pathway that uses B12 and methylfolate. The supporting studies are numerous and too many to post here; I've summed it up on my blog this past week if you want to read more.
