Age of Autism Weekly Wrap: Somewhere Between Yikes! and Yawn

AofA Red Logo Ayumi YamadaBy Dan Olmsted

There’s an odd emotion I suspect many AOA readers share with me, a mix of  “Holy Cow” and “Tell us something we don't know” when new information clusters around the hypothesis that autism is an environmental disorder and, sorry to say it, vaccines are the main trigger.

Such was the case this week when Coy Barefoot, an autism dad, radio host and all-around great ally in Charlottesville, Virginia, sent an e-mail titled, “In case you hadn’t seen this.” It was a link to a June 1 Science Daily report from the University of Virginia Health System. It begins:

“In a stunning discovery that overturns decades of textbook teaching, researchers at the University of Virginia School of Medicine have determined that the brain is directly connected to the immune system by vessels previously thought not to exist. That such vessels could have escaped detection when the lymphatic system has been so thoroughly mapped throughout the body is surprising on its own, but the true significance of the discovery lies in the effects it could have on the study and treatment of neurological diseases ranging from autism to Alzheimer's disease to multiple sclerosis.”

Autism. Haven’t parents and some professionals been saying for years that autism is an autoimmune and neurological disorder? How is this new study not strong support for the idea that goosing the immune system into dysregulation with vaccines is bad for the developing brain?

This comes on top of evidence we’ve known for years about the role the brain’s own immune cells may play in autism; in The Age of Autism, Mark Blaxill and I characterized the cause of autism as “a rash on the brain” from overstimulation of its immune cells due to, for example, the mercury in thimerosal-containing vaccines.

Mark agreed this new piece is of strong interest, but it certainly didn’t “overturn decades” of orthodoxy for us. Coy said it is “something of a smoking gun, don’t you think? A missing link between damage to the immune system and brain injury.”

I do think that. And I was reminded of a comment by Dr. Brian Jepson I came across this week to the effect that calling autism a developmental disorder is like calling a hammer blow to the skull a  headache.  There are specific processes going on that result in the injury known as autism (and other issues) in vulnerable children, and those processes are pretty clear by now to all but the all genes/no real increase crowd (read: mainstream medicine and media).

So, like wow, that’s interesting. But like, yeah, we already had the basic idea a lot clearer than the experts.

--

Also this week, the feds fessed up to the full extent of the failure of the flu shot to protect people. “Scientists blue after flu vaccine only 19 percent effective,” USA Today headlined. (Note the focus on the poor scientists, not the poor people who got a worthless flu shot.) So that was another Wow! -- this thing really was worthless. On the other hand, yeah, we knew this year’s was particularly worthless, a subspecies of the overall worthlessness of the whole flu shot enterprise.

But not to worry, it can’t hurt you! “There’s nothing harmful about the vaccine,” said Andrew Pekosz of Johns Hopkins. “There’s no disadvantage to getting it.”

Well, except for the documented, compensated federal vaccine court cases of severe injury from the flu vaccine, the indiscriminate use of mercury in a significant portion of those shots, the shot's untested use for pregnant women, and the overall dubiousness of getting a medical intervention when you don’t need it.

In our book Vaccines 2.0, Mark Blaxill and I compared this to the anecdote about the baseball scout who, after watching a potential draftee, reported back that “although he cannot pitch or hit, at least he cannot catch.” Yep, that’s our flu vaccine!

--

And speaking of lousy, unneeded, dangerous vaccines, Britain’s Independent reported May 31 that “thousands of teenage girls are enduring debilitating illnesses after routine school cancer vaccination.

“In the HPV category alone, ADRs numbered 8,228, of which 2,587 were classified as ‘serious’ - defined by several criteria, including whether it resulted in hospitalisation or was deemed life threatening.”

That is certainly awful. Yet the pre-licensure tests in which Merck and the NIH rubbed each other backs and shared each other’s bucks was awful. So was the much tamer report earlier this year in the Toronto Star about the vaccine’s dangers that the paper subsequently retracted, deleted, apologized for, got down and swore fealty to the medical establishment if, prithee, they deign to regard them … you get the picture.

“We failed,” the publisher said. Got that right, pal.

Finally, let us pause over the spectacle of Salon.com’s ongoing mud-wrestling with its own craven decision to yank Bobby Kennedy Jr.’s piece, Deadly Immunity, on the CDC’s (ongoing) thimerosal coverup.

David Talbot, the founding editor, recently wrote RFK Jr. :

“I was dismayed when I first heard that Salon had removed your article about the hazards of thimerosal from its web archives. As you know, I was no longer the editor of Salon when your article was published. And I am not an expert on the subject. But without taking a position on mercury preservatives in vaccines, I know enough about the debate -- and about the pharmaceutical industry's general track record on putting profits before people, as well as the compromised nature of regulatory oversight in this country when it comes to powerful industries -- to know that ‘disappearing’ your article was not the proper decision.”

Yikes! That’s fantastic. The story should not have been pulled. Pharma puts profits before people. And captured agencies are failing at regulatory oversight. That's what we said! Yet the giga-brains in the journalism world lauded Salon’s courage in yanking the piece.

I particularly would not want to be Joan Walsh, who succeeded Talbot, published the piece, was succeeded by another editor who pulled it and got Joan to say in published comments that “I regret we didn’t move on this more quickly, as evidence continued to emerge debunking the vaccines and autism link.”

Salon -- right before it was wrong. But we knew that.

Truthseeker2, thank you for pointing out the uprightdoctor website. I see lots there that is new to me. The brain is complex, but must be insisted upon as the focus of understanding neurological disorders.

The report of lymphatic vessels in the brain was new to me, and appears to be relevant to discussions of immune disorders that affect the brain. The new report hopefully will stimulate new research on infectious causes of neurological disorders.

Autism is a neurological disorder. The brain must be the focus of research on the many causes of autism. If MMR causes autism, "subacute sclerosing panencephalitis" (SSPE) should be looked into, an infection of the brain following vaccination.

GI problems may be secondary to loss of autonomic control of peristalsis. I have seen this in cases of drug addiction. The neurological injury precedes problems like severe constipation.

Truthseeker2

Patience, yes this dramatic new discovery is very pertinent to many neurological diseases. But is it really so new? Dr. Flanagan ( upright-doctor.com ) has researched fluid mechanics of the brain and cervical area for many years now. Increased CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) can increase ventricle size and damage nearby brain tissue.

Those in the Multiple Sclerosis community saw firsthand how the pharma run MS Societies were very against this avenue of research, procedures such as angioplasty (CCSVI). In fact they formed their own societies and broke away from the original MS societies. MS currently uses a host of medications including anti-inflamms, chemotherapeutics, muscle relaxants and medications so dangerous (Tysabri) that they have killed many times more people than the number who were killed from angioplasty. There were something like 4 deaths world wide from angioplasty and doctors are now much more aware of the challenges of utilizing stents in veins. Yet mainstream news would have you believe that many died from that type of surgery; that is simply not true and can be verified by a CCSVI Society. To be fair, CCSVI theory and treatment is only in its infancy and for some patients either works short term or not even at all. On the other hand, a great many have felt lasting improvements. Again, this new way of looking at MS is in its infancy.

This knowledge/research should have been revealed years ago and I am afraid that once again the "scientists" will be dragged kicking and screaming into properly utilizing this information, patients be damned. There is much money to be made from treating diseases such as MS, and any surgical or stenting, shunts isn't where the money is at, see?? Now, we in the vaccine safety community also know that for them to admit any kind of culpability or recklessness in terms of vaccines and children's health is not an easy money maker for them to back away from, either.

Jenny

I don't know how, exactly, but I think this will also play into how things pan out with vaccine mandates somehow, along with the new information on lymph vessels.

The sad truth is people are continually being injured by vaccines. I worked with a nurse who had to receive the flu shot in order to keep her job. She had a terrible reaction at the site of the injection in her right arm, redness, swelling and hot. A few weeks later she developed a tremor in her right hand. Test after test, medication after medication doctors' still don't have a clear diagnosis. She did take medication for Parkinson's disease but she reacted terribly to it as well. She is only 31 years old and can no longer work at a job she loved because she cannot perform the duties of a nurse with her worsening tremor. She believes in her heart it was the flu shot. I pray every day for the collapse of the vaccine machine.

Patience (Eileen Nicole) Simon

Dan, thanks for bringing this up for discussion yesterday. On sciencedaily.com there is a link to more on uvahealth.com, and citation of the report to be published in a forthcoming issue of Nature: Louveau A et al. Structural and functional features of central nervous system lymphatic vessels.

The finding of lymphatic vessels supplying the brain is a dramatic new discovery! New fluorescent dyes were used that reveal a system of vessels that drain cerebrospinal fluid into the peripheral lymphatic system.

New discoveries are what science is really all about. This is why statements by non-scientists like "The science is clear" should always be challenged.

Autism as a "developmental disorder" apparently needs clarification. Autism is a neurological disorder that results from disruption of brain development. Mercury, other heavy metals, and toxic substances affect the brain centers of highest aerobic activity. Evidence has been provided not only by neuropathology, but by the deoxyglucose method developed by Louis Sokoloff.

Autism as "a rash on the brain" merits greater analysis! Measles or measles vaccine are causes of "subacute sclerosing panencephalitis" (SSPE). Putting terms "sspe subcortical" in PubMed brings up 29 citations that suggest SSPE also begins with infection of subcortical sites of highest aerobic activity.

Cia Parker;

Same here, always looking and ordering some vitamins when new information surfaces. Some times ordering a different form of a vitamin I am giving when new information comes about. Getting to be a lot of vitamins in the weekly boxes. Stuff that we should be able to absorb from our food - but apparently not?

I guess it depends on how bad the vaccine reaction was. Some I think is just mitochondria - stomach- vagus nerve- hypothalamus, and might can be turned around.
Other I think - and my son included was a stroke-but not a massive stroke (God is good to me), and it was - my fault (not totally) since the ped almost strong armed me, at a time before the internet.
But then even stroke victims do improve over time, and you will need all the vitamins and special diet - oh and yeah - the behavioral what ever - that Tom Insel claims is good.

And you know all of this, down deep - we all do. But it is deep down - and we might be wrong?

Shelley Tzorfas

My understanding of this year's flu shot is that it was changed in order to improve the outcome. They discovered that so many children had become allergic to the eggs used in the flu shot that they changed over to using dogs (Dog Kidney cells). Sadly-not only did the dogs have to die but so many children had to suffer or die as well as part of the "Collateral Damage." In the event that they come up with a better way to kill the dogs to make another batch more safely the question is," How long will it be before children get life threatening allergies from dogs the way that they have been getting life threatening allergies from peanuts which were first added to vaccines in the 1960's?" I concluded in 2007 that autism was caused by vaccines pure and simple. I remain of the same view enhanced by my experience meeting many more parents in the intervening years. The oft repeated claim that the vaccine autism link is debunked is suspicious in itself in terms of the commonality of the language used and repeated many hundreds of times by unwitting dupes. I challenge anyone to supply rock solid evidence that there is such a thing as autism outside of vaccination, including RhoGam and Anti-D.

Barry

If they had listened to Dr. Wakefield and his colleagues back in 1998, when Wakefield proposed the connection and urgently called for more research (that was blocked because they dared to implicate the holy vaccines as possibly being involved), they would have made this "stunning discovery" more than a decade ago.

*****************

If they'd been honest with themselves about how little they actually know, and left the human immune system the hell alone.... none of us would even be here.

Bob, I've noticed that pitch forks seem to be a rather hot item these days. Probably a good time to invest in companies making pitch forks.

"Lawrence" from RI says, "Improvements in quality continue – and anti-vaxers just don’t like it."
Tell that to all the girls suffering side effects from the Gardasil jabs, clown. Their 1.7 billion annual profit is all they care about.

stunning and new but not important to "scientists"

Hmmm, this "stunning discovery that overturns decades of textbook teaching" could change the study and treatment of certain neurological concerns? Notice they don't use the word *cause* in any of that. And of course a stunning discovery that overturns decade of textbook teaching will not be important at all to "science"bloggers that are hell bent on their position. Vaccines could never cause autism/brain damage. Ever.

Benedetta,
I really don't know. Cecily had normal GI function before the fever, but she had fairly severe autism all her life before that, and ever since as well. The diet for two years corrected the GI problem. I gave her the basic ten supplements recommended by Dr. Sears, including B vitamin (in addition to the multi) for three years, but none of them seemed to make any difference. The diet DID make a difference, but only for the GI problem, thank Heavens for that, but it did nothing for the autism. I talked to a homeopath today, who recommended starting with 30 mg of zinc a day (she's already getting 15 in the multi, so I'll get a supplement with 15), mercury-free fish oil, she's been taking Nordic fish oil for many years, and acetyl palmitate, an oil-soluble form of vitamin C good for detoxing. That was a new one on me, but I just ordered it on Amazon. And I'll order a potentized version of the hep-b vaccine. Since the dad-gum hospital continues to say that they didn't keep the brand or the lot number of the vaccine she reacted to (IN VIOLATION OF FEDERAL LAW, but no one seems to care at all about that), I'm assuming that it was Merck Recombivax with the full level of pre-1999 mercury in it. And hope for the best.

Grace Green

I don't understand how the "scientists" could have found 'vessels previously thought not to exist'. Do these people really sit around thinking about things they believe do not exist? It's SO implausible.

Yes, Bob Moffit - the sky is blue, the earth is round, and vaccines are safe -- says a presidential candidate - meanwhile; our major friend in all of this mess that is willing to stick his neck out and is sticking his neck out and writing about all this -- will support said presidential candidate.

Said presidential candidate - is more afraid of NIH, CDC, HHS, FDA, pharma companies - than the masses of voters.

So there we be. I am going out to look to the clouds to see if Jesus is coming yet?

Is "yawnks" a word? I guess Yonkers is a place, but "Yawnkers!!!" sounds like something you might hear in a Scooby Doo episode...and about how I feel thinking about certain pending legislation and ... and so on

...and I'm pretty sure Scooby Doo and Co. could have solved the "autism epidemic mystery" and more, with little help from official "science," years ago ....

Benedetta

Betty thanks for posting that here. It is relevant - since Dan's article points out about the new discovery about the lymph system in the brain.

CIA Parker; Dr. Pol a vet with a TV show up in Michigan was called to a farm to doctor a sick calf. The calf had the bloat and diarrhea. The owner had treated for it correctly but could not get rid of it.

Dr Pol said it also had pneumonia and a fever. He gave it a shot of antibiotic and a shot of B1 - that is thiamine.

He said that the fever had damaged the nerve leading from the brain to the gut.

That thiamine - a B 1 vitamin would help heal it.

Clues -- I too am always looking for clues. If a vet knows this, why don't the rest of us know this?

So fever hurts the nerve- leading to the gut; the nerve shuts down - and stop supporting a good environment for microbes. These same Microbes eat our food - and produces all B vitamins and all B vitamins if missing will cause significant neurological problems -- including the healing of the nerve that will help support the microbes.

Do not give up Cia Parker - there is much yet to be learned and we might be surprised.

Linda1

Really the more stunning discovery (that we all knew) is what charlatans these "scientists" are.

cia parker

I think there is a link between the brain and the gut, but I disagree that autism always starts in the gut. It's brain damage and it starts when the brain reacts with excessive inflammation (swelling that cuts off circulation just the way a stroke does) to a vaccine, whose mission is to cause enough inflammation to make the body produce antibodies to the antigen causing the inflammation. Cells in the gut can be sensitized by vaccine ingredients into attacking their own lining, but I think that's part of the cascade of effects following the general five-star alarm set off by the incursion of the vaccine. Healing the gut is not going to restore the damaged or destroyed neural circuits in the language and social center of the brain. My daughter, after reacting to the hep-B at birth in 2000 and DTaP booster with vaccine encephalitis and autism, had normal bowel function for seven years. A fever from a summer flu in 2007 pulled stored mercury from her bones and started severe bowel disease, chronic constipation. Eventually the GFCD diet for one year followed by a grain-free Paleo diet for another year healed the bowel damage and she can eat anything now with no further problems. I don't know how it did it, it would seem that the auto-immune reaction would still be in place even after the yeast in her gut had been starved by the special diets. Her damaged brain circuits continue to be a major problem, and she continues to be low-verbal and developmentally and cognitively-delayed.

Oops, that "Inflammation Highway" where Visitor posted.

Betty Bona

I love all of Visitor's comments about this new discovery posted on The Information Highway. He/she is making connections with lipopolysaccharides shutting down the lymph system which could implicate both vaccines and the microbiome. LPS activates the immune system in a similar way to aluminum and other adjuvants. An unhealthy, unbalanced microbiome creates excess LPS. He/she also notes a connection with inducible nitric oxide. It's all very interesting. I would love to see a discussion in this section where more people will read and comment.

Flu Season

Looks like the American news media “free flu shot ads” started yesterday with this... “Your Next flu shot will be different”

http://www.foxnews.com/health/2015/06/05/why-your-next-flu-shot-will-be-different/
(same FOX photo used AGAIN with the AIR BUBBLES in the syringe)

In September, THEY WILL ONCE AGAIN SAY... LIKE LAST YEAR... that they have a “Great match” with the flu viruses this year.

Let’s see, about 2% of Americans MAY CATCH the flu each year, with a 19% effective vaccine they hope to reduce this to 1% so MARKETING can once again claim a ...MIRACLE 50% reduction... in cases.

“HERD IMMUNITY” DOES NOT APPLY TO THE FLU SHOT, as only about 45-50% of Americans take the vaccine. For some reason, with EVERY OTHER VACCINE it it so DAMN CRITICAL TO HAVE HERD IMMUNITY or they do not work...

I understand that the “quad-flu vaccine” is billed to Medicare for nearly $100. / or about $750,000 per gallon.

Of course, TWO FLU SHOT DOSES are needed for INFANTS as the first damn dose does not ever work.

IMPROVED labeling is used again this year, the “FLU shot” with an “L for love” is mercury free. Those with mercury are now simply labeled the FU shot.

gawd bless those professionals who work with these dangerous flu viruses EVERY DAY to try to make a 19% effective vaccine. I would suppose the first thing they do is shoot themselves up with the new batch to save themselves...

Betty Bona

I haven't seen any write-ups in mainstream media--like CNN. Shouldn't such a stunning discovery be all over the network stations? Maybe they're waiting for their walking orders from their sponsors.

Carter's Daddy

I'm grateful we have a doctor who told us when we first got the autism DX in 2008 that it is a gut issue and we went from there. This was back in the DAN! days. All the DAN! doctors were shouting it from the mountaintops. Of course it never sees light of day in mainstream media. CNN et al could not acknowledge it lest they give up their Andy Wakefield persecution cash cow. Frankly I'm surprised it's being allowed out now.

Peter Miles

Good ol' scientists! Have to discover it for themselves or it isn't true.

On PubMed

Is there concordance in attitudes and beliefs between parents and scientists about autism spectrum disorder?

All of us parents get our info from other celebrity parents and dubious internet sites like CDC and VAERS etc.

“In a stunning discovery that overturns decades of textbook teaching, researchers at the University of Virginia School of Medicine have determined that the brain is directly connected to the immune system by vessels previously thought not to exist."

Nothing to worry about here .. after all .. "the sky is blue, the earth is round .. and .. vaccines work" so says the ultimate authority on vaccines .. "grandma knows best"
------------------------------------
"Scientists blue after flu vaccine only 19 percent effective, .. but not to worry, it can’t hurt you! “There’s nothing harmful about the vaccine,” said Andrew Pekosz of Johns Hopkins. “There’s no disadvantage to getting it.”

With "sock puppets" like Andrew Pekosz spewing this unfiltered scientific gobbygook in USA Today .. no wonder "grandma thinks she knows best"

(I always thought it odd that Bush Jr refused his annual flu vaccine .. shamelessly pretending he wanted it available to someone who may need it more than himself. What a courageous sacrifice. However .. I will always believe his predecessor Ronald Reagan's Alzheimer had more to do with Bush's refusal than his compassion for someone who "needed it more than himself")
--------------------------------------
"thousands of teenage girls are enduring debilitating illnesses after routine school cancer vaccination .. 2,587 were classified as ‘serious’ - defined by several criteria, including whether it resulted in hospitalisation or was deemed life threatening.”

What is it going to take before people .. armed with nothing more than pitchforks .. storm the bastille's of public health agencies all over the world?
---------------------------------
"I was dismayed when I first heard that Salon had removed your article about the hazards of thimerosal from its web archives .. I know enough about the debate .. to know that ‘disappearing’ your article was not the proper decision.”

Can't wait for the FRONTLINE documentary of "disappearing" articles from main stream media sources .. something on the magnitude of the "disappearing" of Chile's citizens not so long ago.

Nah .. too much "blow-back" by PBS "foundation" contributors should such a "documentary" even be proposed .. far more profitable to just ignore the "disappearing" of journalistic integrity.
