"Developmental disorders do not end after childhood," said Ruth Carper, a neuroscientist at SDSU and a co-investigator on the project. "Development is a lifelong process, and there is a real need to know what happens later in life for people with autism."

Only in recent years has medical and public awareness grown to the point where it can be reliably diagnosed. "It's hard to even find older adults who have been diagnosed with autism," Müller explained. "Diagnostic criteria have changed enormously over the decades."

This is setup. There are several stories out today denying any real increase in autism.  This is exactly what's going on here.  As children aging out of school, competing for services, becomes a critical problem, those covering up this disaster will be right there-pretending it's nothing new. The spin was usually that it is A GENETIC DISORDER now being recognized by doctors who didn't understand autism in the past.

Pittsburgh-Post Gazette

Although diagnoses of autism have continue to go up in recent years, a large study out of Sweden involving twins indicates that autism rates may have actually stayed the same over the time period.

However, Nancy Minshew, MD, a psychiatrist and director of the University of Pittsburgh's Center for Excellence in Autism, told the newspaper that the she believes the real autism rate is closer to 3%.

"My view is that the autism numbers have gone up, but the number of people who are affected is actually unchanged, which is what they are saying in this paper," she said.

Dr. Nancy Minshew and Mark Roth together again!  Roth, who writes for the Pittsburgh-Post Gazette, and Dr. Minshew have long said there's no link between vaccine and autism or any real increase in the disorder.  (In other words, we just think there are more kids everywhere with autism.)

Here are earlier stories either on Roth and Minshew.  Roth likes to promote studies like the one by Professor Terry Brugha of the University of Leicester in England where he supposedly found a one percent autism rate among adults.  (Of course these were individuals who could speak and answer some survey questions.  BTW...whatever came of that study that a lot reporters liked to cite as proof of no real increase?  NOTHING.  These were not people who resemble our children on the spectrum and they knew it.)

What I have called The Really Big Lie About Autism--namely that there's been no real increase--has never gone away.

People are really going to have to convince us that's true now.  THE YOUNG ADULTS COMING OUT OF SCHOOL ARE EVERYWHERE.  It's very important to convince the public that they've always been here.

Officially, U.S. health officials have never acknowledged a true increase in autism.  If you look back at each announcement of an increase in the autism rate over the last two decades, you'll see that there was always a government spokesperson who announced that they weren't sure IF THIS INCREASE REALLY MEANT MORE CHILDREN HAVE AUTISM.  There were usually vague references to "possible environmental factors."  With regular studies in the news on the genetics of autism,

I want to protect my son with vaccines, yet respected medical professionals are questioning vaccine safety in susceptible populations. Is my delightful 3-year-old boy among these?

Elizabeth Bell is a former elementary school teacher and former journalist with the San Francisco Chronicle.  The Sac Bee published her excellent opinion piece. I posted three comments and I hope lots of parents do the same.

Forbes

[T]wo new research studies appeared with powerful support for vaccines and two states made legislative progress towards ending so-called "philosophical exemptions" in which parents opt-out of vaccination programs on the basis of fear and misinformation. Unfortunately, the anti-vaccine fear-trepreneurs and celebrities, like Jenny McCarthy and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., have fomented a movement impervious to data.

How appropriate that The Lancet puts out this brainwashing. Todd Essig is a psychologist.   He's not worried about side effects from the ever-increasing vaccine schedule.  In fact, NOT VACCINATING PUTS KIDS "AT RISK FOR WORSE HEALTH OUTCOMES."

".opting out is a dangerous, potentially tragic, mistake."

In other words, the rights of the individual are not worthy of consideration.

I used to post a lot on Forbes..but I've been blocked.

Essig trashes Kennedy for ignoring the data.  Seriously?  Has he read THE SCIENCE in Kennedy's book?  I'm waiting for A SINGLE ARTICLE ATTACKING KENNEDY where someone actually says they've read Thimerosal-Let the Science Speak.

So much for a free exchange of ideas.

Jewish Journal

Fears that vaccines are linked to autism - such connections have been debunked by the scientific research - are cited less frequently in Israel than they are in the United States.

Most of the story is about welfare in Israel.  Reporter Ben Sales could care less if vaccines carry any risks.  Above is the ONE SENTENCE ON THE SUBJECT.

So autism is the only possible side effect from vaccination-and that's been disproved? It is ludicrous to imagine that injecting a chemicals into children poses no risk.  Imagine ANY OTHER MEDICAL PRODUCT OR PROCEDURE REQUIRED BY LAW IN ORDER TO RECEIVE WELFARE BENEFITS.

Is Israel going to FORCE PARENTS TO VACCINATE IF THEY WANT BENEFITS TO CARE FOR THEIR CHILDREN? And if they refuse-too bad, your family is on its own?

Are vaccinations so critical that parents will have no choice? This is medical tyranny.  This is the action of a totalitarian government.

Would be interesting to see how much money Univ. of Pitt hospital(s) get from all the pharmaceutical companies...pretty much everything connected to the University and hospital, including the autism center have a drug company name attached to them. Ten years ago the wait for a diagnosis appointment there was 9+ months. I have heard it is much longer now, but since there is no increase, why is that?

I've said it before: When you see those words "Center for Excellence" run away - fast.

Hi Anne

The senior author of the new study - which is open access - is Christopher Gillberg who once got a criminal conviction destroying a lot of data when challenged about it (for the putative condition of DAMP, which is supposed to be something like ADHD). In the early 90s he also went around giving out diagnoses of ASD to the adult citizens of Gothenburg in Sweden and this was incorporated into the projected UK incidence of 92 in 10,000 launched by the NAS in 1998. Only trouble is that they've never been able to find them and can't now.

Presumably you need the Gillberg touch. I couldn't make head or tail of the new article - it seemed very tenuously argued. A bit like a wrestling match with an octopus.
