• From approximately February 2004 until February 2010, Poul Thorsen executed a scheme to steal grant money awarded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). CDC had awarded grant money to Denmark for research involving infant disabilities, autism, genetic disorders, and fetal alcohol syndrome. CDC awarded the grant to fund studies of the relationship between autism and the exposure to vaccines, the relationship between cerebral palsy and infection during pregnancy, and the relationship between developmental outcomes and fetal alcohol exposure.
  
  
• Thorsen worked as a visiting scientist at CDC, Division of Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities, before the grant was awarded.

• The initial grant was awarded to the Danish Medical Research Council. In approximately 2007, a second grant was awarded to the Danish Agency for Science, Technology, and Innovation. Both agencies are governmental agencies in Denmark. The research was done by the Aarhaus University and Odense University Hospital in Denmark.
  
  
• Thorsen allegedly diverted over $1 million of the CDC grant money to his own personal bank account. Thorsen submitted fraudulent invoices on CDC letterhead to medical facilities assisting in the research for reimbursement of work allegedly covered by the grants. The invoices were addressed to Aarhaus University and Sahlgrenska University Hospital. The fact that the invoices were on CDC letterhead made it appear that CDC was requesting the money from Aarhaus University and Sahlgrenska University Hospital although the bank account listed on the invoices belonged to Thorsen.
  
  
• In April 2011, Thorsen was indicted on 22 counts of Wire Fraud and Money Laundering.
  
  
• According to bank account records, Thorsen purchased a home in Atlanta, a Harley Davidson motorcycle, an Audi automobile, and a Honda SUV with funds that he received from the CDC grants.
  
  
• Thorsen is currently in Denmark and is awaiting extradition to the United States.

Poul Thorsen’s studies have been used to deny the link between autism and vaccines. They are likely some of the most important of the studies that Paul Offit hangs his hat on.

Jose, As we discussed on Friday, we have become aware through Poul Thorsen of an exciting opportunity to study the role of MMR vaccine and autism using several registries/existing studies and the repository of biologic specimens and laboratory capabilities in Denmark. Attached below is a proposal for such a study. Poul will be leaving on Thursday to travel to Denmark where he will be meeting with the PIs for the proposed study on June 6th. We would like to be able to have Poul say whether it is likely that CDC(NIP) can fund the study, if NIP is interested. The proposed budget is included; there may be additional sources of funding (in addition to NIP) but we are not certain at this time. Unfortunately, the DD Branch does not have much (if any) $$ to fund the study, but we do have the expertise that we have developed due to the autism surveillance in Atlanta and the MMR/autism case-control study. Marshalyn Yeargin-Alisopp and Coleen Boyle (copied on the email) are two of the authors on the MMR paper that Dr. William Thompson – the Whistle Blower in the CDC that Offit dismisses – has distanced himself from with this statement:

“I regret that my coauthors and I omitted statistically significant information in our 2004 article published in the journal Pediatrics. The omitted data suggested that African American males who received the MMR vaccine before age 36 months were at increased risk for autism. Decisions were made regarding which findings to report after the data were collected, and I believe that the final study protocol was not followed.”

The “massive international conspiracy” Offit claims would have to exist was never needed. The greatest fraud in the history of medicine – covering up the real cause of the autism epidemic – was perpetrated by a small group of CDC insiders. The fraudulent MMR study that William Thompson so regrets was delivered by the same people who retained Poul Thorsen, a man who played with data and then played with CDC grant money. Poul Thorsen’s Denmark population studies have been widely criticized for data manipulation to make it appear as though vaccines had no association with autism. Thorsen manipulated data and then manipulated the CDC out of millions of dollars.

Poul Thorsen – the man behind Paul Offit’s sacred science – is an indicted criminal and fugitive from justice. Thorsen lives openly in Denmark – he’s not hiding in a cave in Afghanistan. Why has he not been arrested in Denmark and returned to the US to stand trial?

The marvelous science that Paul Offit cloaks himself in is built on lies, deceptions and fraud perpetrated by a small group of people who did what they had to do to protect the vaccine program. Congress doesn’t have to subpoena people from around the world. They merely need to drag this crew out of their offices. And it is important to note that not-for-profits such as Every Child by Two have derailed previous Congressional hearings. Offit is on the board of this organization.

Offit’s role has been to make it all seem reasonable in the eyes of the press by marginalizing those who question the safety of his drugs. That’s what he tried, but failed, to do to Mary Holland.

And speaking of Congressional hearings, it is important for the media to re-familiarize themselves with a Congressional report on a hearing before the House of Representatives Committee on Government Reform from 2000 that cited Paul Offit for conflicts of interests in the approval process of the rotavirus vaccine he helped develop.

“At our April 6th autism hearing, Dr. Paul Offit disclosed that he holds a patent on a rotavirus vaccine and receives grant money from Merck to develop this vaccine. He also disclosed that he is paid by the pharmaceutical industry to travel around the country and teach doctors that vaccines are safe. Dr. Offit is a member of the CDC’s advisory committee and voted on three rotavirus issues, including making the recommendation of adding the rotavirus vaccine to the Vaccines for Children program.”1

The Vaccine Adverse Event Reactions System (VAERS) reports that the vaccine Paul Offit pushed through has resulted in 303 several reported deaths. VAERS is a passive monitoring system and captures anywhere from 2 to 10% of adverse vaccine reactions.

The lack of objective reporting and investigative journalism into the conflict of interests of the people pushing a radical agenda is shocking.

How radical?

Art Caplan, a medical ethicist, wants the medical licenses of doctors who oppose vaccination revoked.  Caplan criticizes those who have claimed that vaccine injuries have resulted in “profound mental disorders” even though the Vaccine Injury Table in the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (NVICP) lists MMR encephalopathy. Further, many cases, such as Mojabi v HHS (No. 06-227V), were compensated by the federal government and show that vaccine injuries that have caused exactly that:

“Petitioners allege that Ryan suffered injuries resulting from all of the vaccinations administered to him between March 25, 2003 and February 22, 2005, and in particular, the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination administered to him first on December 19, 2003 and again five months later, on May 10, 2004.  Petition at 1.  Petitioners allege that the MMR vaccination that Ryan received on December 19, 2003 (the first MMR vaccination), resulted in a Vaccine Table Injury, specifically an encephalopathy that produced “a severe and debilitating injury to his brain, described as Autism Spectrum Disorder (‘ASD’).”

Would Caplan want the medical scalps of those who file VAERS reports? Would he demand the heads of doctors who testify on behalf of petitioners in the NVICP – a government program? This is a medical ethicist?

USA Today’s Alex Berezow wants “anti-vax” parents jailed because “Anti-vaccine parents are turning their children into little walking time bombs. They ought to be charged for endangering their children and others.”

Jailing parents who don’t make their children take a class of drugs that are described in as “unavoidably unsafe”? Jailing parents for not supporting vaccine manufacturers who pay people like Paul Offit?

The measles hysteria fueled by paid industry advocates like Paul Offit is designed to remove parental choice from the health care decisions involving their children. It is designed to terrorize the public into forfeiting the right to full disclosure and informed consent. It is designed to force people to surrender their rights to the government for the purposes of fueling drug company profits. Paul Offit wants to use corrupted science to have public policy exclusively determined by men like him.

America is being manipulated – “Astroturfed” - into believing that those who have made the connection between vaccine injury and autism are conspiracy nuts. Into believing that doctors should be intimidated into suspending their own judgment and that parents have to be jailed for not giving their children a drug.

People paid by the pharmaceutical industry should not be allowed to dictate public policy through fear, intimidation and Astroturf.
