In other words, where there’s more access to diagnostic services, the autism rate is higher.
But this reality is often denied or ignored by a significant proportion of autism advocates, primarily those who subscribe to pseudoscience like that peddled at Age of Autism.
So, if there is a real increase – again, it’s not clear – do we have any idea what might account for it?
Well, we know for darn sure it isn’t vaccines. (Seriously, there IS NO LINK.) It’s possible a small amount of the increase may relate to the increase in the average age of parents. Both women and men are becoming parents later now than at any other time in history, and autism spectrum disorders appear linked to older parents, though the data on older fathers is more solid than that on older mothers. And then there is a long, long, ridiculous list of other things linked to autism (car exhaust? labor induction? really?) that have little to no solid evidence.
This isn't by the usual pro-vax people at Forbes, namely Steven Salzberg and Emily Willingham. Instead, this is Tara Haelle...and one of her specialties is telling us about vaccines. Notice that she specifically cites Age of Autism.
This announcement of a new study isn't really news, as people have been saying the same thing for years. It is being used by both TIME and Forbes to slam those who link vaccines to autism--and that may have been the whole point of the study.
Autism is expected to exceed one in 68 children in the coming years and experts say the US is not prepared for that.

In the US alone, more than 1.5 people, most of them below 22-years-old, have been diagnosed with autism. The charts and graphs predict a severe increase in that number in the next few years. Experts believe, however, that the US is unprepared for this possible 'autism tsunami'.
This is a very misleading title. The truth is... "Experts" in overwhelming numbers do everything to cover up what autism is doing to our children.
Forbes and TIME just this week had people telling us that there's been no real increase in autism. You will never see anyone from mainstream medicine or the mainstream media ever call autism a crisis. No one breaks that rule, regardless of how bad the numbers get.
Stephanie Seneff is cited here--and dismissed. FINE. Lets keep pretending nothing is wrong. We're all going to be paying for the autism epidemic. The adults are coming and there's no end in sight when it comes to the next generation of ASD kids.
"This is the best time in the world to be editor-in-chief of National Geographic," says Susan Goldberg, who last April became the first woman to lead the magazine since its founding at the Cosmos Club in 1888. . . .
Here's a mockup of March's cover. It's not final yet, but we're going to do the War on Science-"Evolution never happened," "GMOs are bad," "Vaccines cause autism." That's a provocative, timely story for us to be doing.
Vaccines and GMOs are safe, according to Natl Geog. This isn't the magazine we remember from our youth. Increasingly they have been promoting corporate interests.
In Nov 2014, Nat'l Geo presented the same idea TIME just did---there's been no real increase in autism.
And they've had other pro-vax stories and slamming anyone who disputes safety claims.
Feb 2014, Understanding Autism: Baby's Delivery May Be Key--Quieting nerve cells in the brain during birth in mice seems to protect against autism, according to a new study.
July, 2013, One Thing We Know About Autism: Vaccines Aren't to Blame--Anti-vaccine advocate Jenny McCarthy has a new platform on The View. Experts hope she won't spread more lies.
This latest story is a preview of what's ahead in 2015. Susan Goldberg, the editor of Nat'l Geo, is planning to focus on the "War on Science." They're going after people who dispute evolution, GMOs and those who link vaccines to autism. We're all part of the "War on Science."
On Friday Jan 2 an article that was published by Radar Online reported that Ms McCarthy told Time magazine that her son may not have had autism and she was now going to change her stance regarding vaccines and autism.
I've seen a number of places that reported that McCarthy now believes her son never had autism. Of course none of them interviewed her about it.
Even hospital medical staff, for whom vaccination is mandatory here, are falling ill.
"We haven't had an influenza outbreak like this in at least three to four years in terms of the impact it's had on the hospitals, Davenport said.
. . . She estimated the number of sick hospital workers at Bronson in the 10 percent range, "but even a 10-20 percent illness can really impact your staffing ratios," she said. . . .
In addition, they are calling on the community to step up hand washing and hygiene, and to get a flu shot.
"As long as influenza is still circulating in the community everyone who hasn't been vaccinated should be vaccinated," Davenport said.
If the flu vaccine is mandatory for hospital workers, yet 10 percent of them are out sick with the flu, why is Dr. Davenport telling people to get the vaccine? Davenport calls for "everyone" to get vaccinated. What other medical product is recommended for EVERYONE?
It seems that effectiveness rates don't matter. In fact, on Dec 11, 2014, MLive.com had this editorial calling for an end to the philosophical exemption in Michigan.
