In other words, where there’s more access to diagnostic services, the autism rate is higher.

But this reality is often denied or ignored by a significant proportion of autism advocates, primarily those who subscribe to pseudoscience like that peddled at Age of Autism.

So, if there is a real increase – again, it’s not clear – do we have any idea what might account for it?

Well, we know for darn sure it isn’t vaccines. (Seriously, there IS NO LINK.) It’s possible a small amount of the increase may relate to the increase in the average age of parents. Both women and men are becoming parents later now than at any other time in history, and autism spectrum disorders appear linked to older parents, though the data on older fathers is more solid than that on older mothers. And then there is a long, long, ridiculous list of other things linked to autism (car exhaust? labor induction? really?) that have little to no solid evidence.

This isn't by the usual pro-vax people at Forbes, namely Steven Salzberg and Emily Willingham.   Instead, this is Tara Haelle...and one of her specialties is telling us about vaccines.  Notice that she specifically cites Age of Autism.

This announcement of a new study isn't really news, as people have been saying the same thing for years.  It is being used by both TIME and Forbes to slam those who link vaccines to autism--and that may have been the whole point of the study.

Autism is expected to exceed one in 68 children in the coming years and experts say the US is not prepared for that.

In the US alone, more than 1.5 people, most of them below 22-years-old, have been diagnosed with autism.  The charts and graphs predict a severe increase in that number in the next few years. Experts believe, however, that the US is unprepared for this possible 'autism tsunami'.

This is a very misleading title. The truth is...  "Experts" in overwhelming numbers do everything to cover up what autism is doing to our children.

Forbes and TIME just this week had people telling us that there's been no real increase in autism.  You will never see anyone from mainstream medicine or the mainstream media ever call autism a crisis.  No one breaks that rule, regardless of how bad the numbers get.

Stephanie Seneff is cited here--and dismissed.  FINE.  Lets keep pretending nothing is wrong.  We're all going to be paying for the autism epidemic.  The adults are coming and there's no end in sight when it comes to the next generation of ASD kids.

National Geographic

"This is the best time in the world to be editor-in-chief of National Geographic," says Susan Goldberg, who last April became the first woman to lead the magazine since its founding at the Cosmos Club in 1888. . . .

Here's a mockup of March's cover. It's not final yet, but we're going to do the War on Science-"Evolution never happened," "GMOs are bad," "Vaccines cause autism." That's a provocative, timely story for us to be doing.

Vaccines and GMOs are safe, according to Natl Geog.  This isn't the magazine we remember from our youth.  Increasingly they have been promoting corporate interests.

In Nov 2014, Nat'l Geo presented the same idea TIME just did---there's been no real increase in autism.

March 2014, "Increase" in Childhood Autism No Cause for Alarm: Experts--New CDC report finds differences in disease detection among states

And they've had other pro-vax stories and slamming anyone who disputes safety claims.

July, 2013, One Thing We Know About Autism: Vaccines Aren't to Blame--Anti-vaccine advocate Jenny McCarthy has a new platform on The View. Experts hope she won't spread more lies.

This latest story is a preview of what's ahead in 2015.  Susan Goldberg, the editor of Nat'l Geo, is planning to focus on the "War on Science."  They're going after people who dispute evolution, GMOs and those who link vaccines to autism.  We're all part of the "War on Science."

Autism Daily Newscast

On Friday Jan 2 an article that was published by Radar Online reported that Ms McCarthy told Time magazine that her son may not have had autism and she was now going to change her stance regarding vaccines and autism.

I've seen a number of places that reported that McCarthy now believes her son never had autism.  Of course none of them interviewed her about it.

Even hospital medical staff, for whom vaccination is mandatory here, are falling ill.

"We haven't had an influenza outbreak like this in at least three to four years in terms of the impact it's had on the hospitals, Davenport said.

. . .  She estimated the number of sick hospital workers at Bronson in the 10 percent range, "but even a 10-20 percent illness can really impact your staffing ratios," she said. . . .

In addition, they are calling on the community to step up hand washing and hygiene, and to get a flu shot.

"As long as influenza is still circulating in the community everyone who hasn't been vaccinated should be vaccinated," Davenport said.

If the flu vaccine is mandatory for hospital workers, yet 10 percent of them are out sick with the flu, why is Dr. Davenport telling people to get the vaccine?  Davenport calls for "everyone" to get vaccinated.  What other medical product is recommended for EVERYONE?

It seems that effectiveness rates don't matter.  In fact, on Dec 11, 2014, had this editorial calling for an end to the philosophical exemption in Michigan.

In addition to my earlier comment where I pointed out the similarity between the Charlie Hebdo attack and pro-vaxxers seeking to bar Dr. Sherri Tenpenny from speaking in Australia, I will also mention the hypocrisy of the press’s coverage of the Charlie Hedbo attach as they now bemoan how the shootings were vicious attacks on cherished western values that we fought wars over. They go on about how it was not just an attack on free speech, but also free press. Yet, where is this freedom to cover controversial topics such as the CDC whistleblower affair? Even Gorski gloated about how the media was wise to ignore this ‘manufacturism’, despite real interest from the public to get to the bottom of it. In truth, our cherished western values such as free speech and free press have long been under siege by corporate interest. That we are now wailing about them with the Charlie Hedbro attack really is shameful.

It's been a while since I've read a Forbes article - what an annoying experience.

The only war being fought is the war on truth, integrity and objectivity. National Geographic can suck it.

Anne, I just saw this in It's another measles outbreak where it's being blamed on the unvaccinated. Thought you might be able to track down the real facts of the situation:

Thanks Anne for the update. The denialism really does roll on full steam ahead. On a slightly unrelated note, I watch with absolute shock at the Charlie Hebdo attack. As a staunch proponent of free speech, believing everyone should be allowed to share their views no matter how 'odious' they are, and -- only!-- providing they do not incite crime, I find the shootings deeply unsettling. I am also following the fury over, 'anti-vaxxer', Sheri Tenpenny's bid to speak in Australian. Pro-vaxxers are petitioning the Australian government to bar her entry, and have successfully forced some of the venues to cancel her speaking arrangements. Even though one of these acts is exponentially more heinous than the other, are pro-vaxxers not nevertheless disturbed by their parallels in extending from the same root -- attacks on free speech?

I am all for a "war on science" .. but .. I would suggest that Natl Geo begin their "war" by reporting on the results or progress of President Obama's effort to "restore confidence to science" .. which was launced in March 2009 .. that promised to restore the American people's faith in science which President Obama believes has been "putting politics before science".

Unfortunately .. I seriously doubt the President's committee would dare investigate decades of manipulated "scientific research" by academia, pharmaceutical industry, FDA, CDC, etc .. science rife with "conflicts of interest" and "revolving door career rewards" for doing exactly what President Obama claims they have been doing .. putting the "politics of protecting profits and reputations" before science .. especially regarding science's "golden calf" .. vaccines.

Anti-GMOs, Anti-Vaccines, and EVOLUTION DENIERS?!

Why don't they just throw in people who believe in alien abduction instead? Or holocaust deniers. Oops probably shouldn't give them ideas.

Sickening how 'on message' they all seem to be. This is a new-ish meme (equating vaccine refusal to creationism) and they are ALL on board with it.

Funny thing... The Danish article cited by Forbes actually provides compelling evidence that there was a very large real increase in autism prevalence in Denmark, after accounting for changes in diagnostic criteria and procedure. You can find details of this in a highlighted post a page or so into the comments. Based on this Danish journal article, nobody can claim any longer that there is no, or very little, real increase. And that's in Denmark, not the US, and this study stopped measuring with the 1991 birth cohort, just before something else interesting happened. Of course that does not mean that vaccines had anything to do with the increase, but the increase is undeniably real.

Guess I'll be canceling my NG subscription. I they can't properly (fairly) cover the vaccine-autism, which is the biggest and most important medical story of our time, I'm dropping them. What BS. Not the magazine they used to be, for sure! TIME and Forbes lost me a long time ago.

National Geographic is focusing on its own War on the Public.

Jeannette Bishop

This is a bit dated (60% have "not very much or none at all" confidence in the mass media in 2012):

But with this poll last year, I expect the above may be even higher today (11% of millennials trust the media to "do the right thing"):

If I were someone with a strong desire to think well of my fellow human beings, I would suspect members of the media are thinking: we can't tell the truth about vaccination risks, but we can use this level of distrust to promote vaccine questioning and investigation by repeatedly telling people there is no link, over and over and over and ...
