PLAGUE - "Sweeping the Country this Fall!"

Kent Book PlagueBy Kent Heckenlively

In every great conflict there is an event which fundamentally alters the balance of forces between the two sides.

As England struggled in the Battle of Britain, Winston Churchill wondered how he could get the industrial might and manpower of  the United States to stand with him against Nazi Germany.  The Japanese obliged him by bombing Pearl Harbor, then as America wondered if they should also join the fight against Germany, Hitler made the decision easy by declaring war on the United States.  England and America would stand together through that long and bitter conflict.

It was with this idea in mind that I co-wrote, PLAGUE, a book which has the potential to unite the communities of those who suffer with chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), autism, Lyme disease, and prostate cancer.  In the person of Dr. Judy Mikovits I found a fearless and compassionate scientist who would not rest while so many suffered.

PLAGUE does speak not with an "inside voice."  PLAGUE kicks down doors, tosses in a few flash grenades, and rushes in with a SWAT team.  It's important to catch the bad guys in the act.  When there are millions who suffer every day with these diseases, and our public health authorities offer nothing, anything less than a full-out effort is a crime.

And when our mandarins of public health tell us to be patient, allowing them time to figure out how they can change the parameters of a study already in progress, (because it will reveal inconvenient truths) we the people, must not let them get away with it.  You see, those who work in "public health" work for us, the public.

In the two years I've spent co-writing PLAGUE I've had the opportunity to talk to a number of scientists.  I've come to know them, their hopes, their dreams, and their ambitions.  Courage is not a word which springs to mind when I think about the majority of them, especially those in government service.  More often than not they strike me as middle-managers, deathly afraid of saying or doing the wrong thing, and having their position impacted in any way.

And yet, they're supposed to be soldiers in the cause of public health.  They're depicted in the media as warriors on the front-line of the disease war and too few of them actually fit this description.  The Surgeon General of the United States wears a uniform which is modeled on an actual general's uniform! (I can't make up this stuff!)

But they have failed, and it's left to us, the citizenry, to fight this battle, mostly on our own.  Make no mistake about it, there are researchers and scientists with courage, like Dr. Mikovits, but they are few and far between.  When the dust from this battle settles, those few brave researchers who have followed the tenents of science and the dictates of their conscience, will be our new heroes.

The time for cowardice in our research community is coming to an end.  PLAGUE is dedicated to that purpose.

I've been asked by people why they should buy this book.  Here is my answer: PLAGUE is the flag I am carrying right into the heart of the enemy camp.  After twelve years of advocacy it represents my best effort to deliver a knock-out blow against the forces which have been actively resisting us and the various disease communities we represent.

We have studied the enemy.  We know their strengths and weaknesses.  And we know what they fear.  PLAGUE is their worst nightmare, because it shows how far they have strayed from the path of true science and the imperative of science to help the human race.  They will be judged by their own rules.

If PLAGUE really does "sweep the country this fall," meaning it is the one story people can't wait to read and discuss with their friends, family, and co-workers, then we will have won a great victory.  And real hope will not be far behind.

I had to go to explorer to get on face book by the way, because AOL was not working at all.

Trouble with AOL too.

I asked my friends on face book -- they never noticed.

I have the same internet problem described by Denise. Often I have to wait a day or two. Like Denise, I find the Ebola story perfect for distracting from the Whistleblower, and I think that the CDC folks were expecting to impress everyone with their high tech fight against the evil microbe and their dedication to saving each American life, that no one would be inclined to believe the Dr. Thompson, even if they read about him. Interesting that they are finding this more difficult than they expected and the populace is not inclined to be patient.

I tried to comment this morning on the "Ice Bucket Challenge" story, and suddenly had "no server." Then I tried each on the page -- same thing. This is not the first time either. Makes you wonder. I finally went to the AOA site itself and got my respects in to that brave family. With the Ebola fiasco going on, is it any wonder? Ebola, the perfect distraction from any breaking #CDCWHISTLEBLOWER stories!

I have also noticed glitches with aoa exactly when the whistleblower story broke. I will click on a permalink and it just disappears. Hoping it is from high traffic .

Did this headline break the net? I couldn't access AoA for about an hour this morning. (Note: AoA has been generally running slower for me since just after the time Dr. Thompson was outed, whatever that means.)

Thank you, Kent, for making the effort to tell this story. Looking forward to reading and sharing.
