Sept 25, 2014, Wall Street Journal: Paul A. Offit: The Anti-Vaccination Epidemic

Whooping cough, mumps and measles are making an alarming comeback, thanks to seriously misguided parents....

. . . One reason was that study after study showed that these concerns were ill-founded. Another was that the famous 1998 report claiming to show a link between vaccinations and autism was retracted by The Lancet, the medical journal that had published it. The study was not only spectacularly wrong, as more than a dozen studies have shown, but also fraudulent. The author, British surgeon Andrew Wakefield, has since been stripped of his medical license.

But the damage was done. Countless parents became afraid of vaccines. As a consequence, many parents now choose to delay, withhold, separate or space out vaccines. Some don't vaccinate their children at all. A 2006 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that between 1991 and 2004, the percentage of children whose parents had chosen to opt out of vaccines increased by 6% a year, resulting in a more than twofold increase.

Today the media are covering the next part of this story, the inevitable outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases, mostly among children who have not been vaccinated. Some of the parents who chose not to vaccinate were influenced by the original, inaccurate media coverage.

. . . Who is choosing not to vaccinate? The answer is surprising. The area with the most cases of whooping cough in California is Los Angeles County, and no group within that county has lower immunization rates than residents living between Malibu and Marina Del Ray, home to some of the wealthiest and most exclusive suburbs in the country. At the Kabbalah Children's Academy in Beverly Hills, 57% of children are unvaccinated. At the Waldorf Early Childhood Center in Santa Monica, it's 68%, according to the Hollywood Reporter's analysis of public-health data.

...But parents in Beverly Hills and Santa Monica see vaccines as unnatural-something that conflicts with their healthy lifestyle. And they have no problem finding fringe pediatricians willing to cater to their irrational beliefs.

These parents are almost uniformly highly educated, but they are making an uneducated choice. It's also a dangerous choice: Children not vaccinated against whooping cough are 24 times more likely to catch the disease. Furthermore, about 500,000 people in the U.S. can't be vaccinated, either because they are receiving chemotherapy for cancer or immune-suppressive therapies for chronic diseases, or because they are too young. They depend on those around them to be vaccinated. Otherwise, they are often the first to suffer. And because no vaccine is 100% effective, everyone, even those who are vaccinated, is at some risk.

DEAR WALL STREET JOURNAL...when will you practice journalism?

I'm sick of the Wall Street Journal.  I'm sick of the media in America--both broadcast and print.

I'm sick of all the dismissive coverage of the topic of autism, of non-vaccinating parents and I'm sick of the coverage of the HUGE controversy over vaccines and autism.

Do you people know that we're in an epidemic of SICK, SICK CHILDREN?

Many can't speak.

Many can't learn.

Many have serious health issues like seizure disorder, bowel disease, and sleep disorders.

Many are still in diapers as teenagers.

We call this disaster "autism."

Does it bother you at all that these same kids started out as normally developing babies and toddlers?

Reporters at the Washington Post, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, CNN, ABC, do you ever investigate this for yourselves?

OR do you just take the word of health officials, people with a vast web of ties--like Offit--to the vaccine industry?

Why does Paul Offit, a doctor who has a vested interest in covering up a link between vaccines and autism, get immediate coverage in the Wall Street Journal like this?

Why does the Wall Street Journal tell us that Offit  "is a professor of pediatrics in the division of infectious diseases and director of the Vaccine Education Center at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia," without bothering to tell us that he made millions from his work on a vaccine for rota virus?

The jig is up!  We know who Offit really is.  We know that the health officials who tell us vaccines are safe, vaccines save lives, have vast money ties to the vaccine makers.

WALL STREET JOURNAL:

Do you know that a TOP VACCINE EXPERT AT THE MAYO CLINIC SAYS THAT MEASLES VACCINE IMMUNITY WEARS OFF?  Check out the work of Dr. Greg Poland.  He says outbreaks of measles are because of the failure of the vaccine.

The same is true of the whooping cough vaccine.

BY THE WAY...The truth is...Dr. Andrew Wakefield is a gastroenterologist.  Offit neatly leaves that fact out of his article.  Parents came to Wakefield, as a specialist in bowel disease, because their children develop severe bowel problems along with autism after the MMR vaccine.  Offit doesn't mention that the British government indemnified the maker of the MMR vaccine, so they're ultimately responsible for the epidemic of damaged children and have a huge incentive to try and discredit him,

What does it tell us that "uniformly highly educated" parents are choosing NOT TO VACCINATE?  It's not the uneducated, uninformed parents choosing not to vaccinate.  Parents who really looked into this, parents who read the studies and have seen the science are scared of what vaccines can do to children and THEY'RE NOT VACCINATING.

WSJ, we know you're only giving us the pro-pharma side of the vaccine debate. We know that you're covering up the reality of vaccine side effects.

The end result is ...WE DON'T TRUST YOU TO TELL US THE TRUTH.

That's an "F" in journalism for you at the Wall Street Journal.  You have no credibility.

Dr. Offit also forgot to mention that according to the California dept of health for the year 2014 to date... 90% of kids who get whooping cough ARE vaccinated. It is on their website under pertussis reports. It makes a lot of sense to vaccinate, Paul. I am waiting for someone to call me already so I can volunteer my unvaccinated very healthy daughter to a study of vax vs unvax. Maybe the idea above of just asking how many unvaccinated kids whose moms weren't vaccinated while they were pregnant, have autism is the easiest way to do some study?

Barry

Remember .. the guy calling other justifiably cautious doctors "fringe" .. is the same guy who proudly proclaimed that a child's still developing immune system could easily accommodate 10,000 vaccines.

***************

What Paul Offit's studies actually suggested, was that a healthy child could safely get up to 100,000 vaccines at once.

He later changed it to 10,000 , because I guess in his mind, he felt it would make him look a little less insane.

@Pete

Pete did a brave Sir Robin. He couldn't handle the truth.

Pete,
Your reliance on "peer reviewed" studies shows how gullible and naive you are. Has it not dawned on you the "peers" in such reviews are hand-picked on the basis of totally agreeing with CDC's and NIH's positions that vaccines do not cause autism? In other words, open-minded "peers" ARE NOT allowed to review studies that objectively analyze the toxicity of vaccines.

cmo

Julie Penny, Great idea with the Malibu, Marina Del Rey study.

Seems one could find a few thousand unvaxed out there and take down some data.

We ought not be surprised the WSJ no longer mentions Offit's
bizarre 10,000 statement .. especially when the WSJ presents HIM .. as THEIR authority on who is to be regarded as a "fringe" doctor.

I don't know who deserves more shame .. the WSJ or Offit?

Autismmom

Pete,

Why are you not responding to the parents here? you say there is no evidence of a link beteen vaccines and autism yet vaccines have been linked to encephalopathy, seizures, developmental delay, sensory intergration dysfunction mitochondrial dysfunction which, lo and behold, many of our children have. So saying there is no evidence of a link to "autism" (a mere label of a neuro immune dysfunction)is telling a half truth because there is plenty of evidence even stated on the vaccine inserts that vaccines can cause serious harm. Obviously there is a link because HHS has settled numerous cases of vaccine injury. Because there is no substance behind your statement, you play word games - you know it and I know it.

I think we should get them to add "and children who have auto-immune conditions such as autism and other neurological conditions" to those who can't get shots. At least it would get us less flack at school.
I love how some bright light has added the strategy of playing on compassion for those who can't get vaccinated--whole forgetting to mention that they got harmed by being vaccinated!

@Pete: suppose you saw your child get harmed after a vaccine have reactions and get brain injured . . This does happen Pete, all the time, even though compensation for it happens only 1/1000 times. So anyhow suppose you saw this happen. What is your ethical response: tell others or be quiet? We are all here because the ethical response is to tell others so it doesn't happen to their children. Also If autism happens in the womb it's due to shots with mercury given to the mother. Autism is another name for fetal vaccine poisoning and baby vaccine poisoning. Amazing that the wsj did not mention Offits vaccine industry history. Amazing.

Donna K

Barry,
Excellent point: "So how do you tell the difference between a vaccine that 'wore off'….. and one that never worked in the first place?"

Antibodies are not synonymous with immunity, contrary to conventional "wisdom."

@Pete

Give it up Pete. Even pre-clinical studies only use healthy subjects, do not look at carcinogenicity or reproductive effects and are short term for adverse effects.
There are no peer reviewed double blind studies to prove the safety or efficacy of any vaccine.

Barry

Do you know that a TOP VACCINE EXPERT AT THE MAYO CLINIC SAYS THAT MEASLES VACCINE IMMUNITY WEARS OFF? Check out the work of Dr. Greg Poland. He says outbreaks of measles are because of the failure of the vaccine.

Pete-

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21058170

"Boys vaccinated as neonates had threefold greater odds for autism diagnosis compared to boys never vaccinated or vaccinated after the first month of life."

Pete

No peer reviewed, blinded study link vaccines to autism. In fact, scientists suspect that damage is done in the womb, prior to vaccination.

Taximom5

And the usual: "Another was that the famous 1998 report claiming to show a link between vaccinations and autism..."

What was that the 1998 report claimed? Oh, right: "We have NOT proved a causal association between autism and measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination."

Maybe a few hundred of us should request that the Wall St. Journal article be retracted.

Jeannette Bishop

Come, Offit! Give the credit where credit is due. Vocal vaccinating parents of vaccinated vaccine-injured children, not to mention basic common observational skills, are the reason more parents are now taking the vaccine decisions into their own hands despite what those who claim to be health providers, but have only taken time to look at the new epidemics enough to say that "it's nothing to do with vaccines," have to say. Dr. Wakefield, and a few other courageous physicians, get some credit to be sure, especially for the dubious example that makes other docs look bad, and most especially for the role of keeping some of us with the more adverse vaccine results sane.

But it really boils down to this: the effects of vaccines (and the ways in which they have been administered) are responsible for the "anti-vaccination epidemic."

Linda1

You know what I enjoyed as I read the WSJ clip above - that Offit is calling the peds who don't vaccinate "fringe". I wonder if he has any idea of how many doctors in this country aren't going along, that it's not just the parents who are opting out. News reports have whined and moaned about the low rate of Hep B birthday shot and the low rate of flu vaccine uptake by the health care providers in the top New York hospitals. A coincidence? I think not. I think that doctors and nurses have had it up to here with the senseless and dangerous mandates, for them and their patients. I think the more Offit publicly attacks his colleagues for practicing responsibly and autonomously without robotically adhering to Pharma's aggressive mandates, Offit is going to become well known as part of a fringe himself.

Catherine Tamaro

Some doctors, although apparently not Paul Offit, are recognizing that the whooping cough vaccine itself is faulty, and that unvaccinated children are not responsible for the rise in whooping cough. See the article below from Scientific American:

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-whooping-cough-vaccines-are-wearing-off/

Julie Penny

Maybe we can put a local ad in the paper for the parents in Malibu, Marina Del Rey and parts in between asking them if their unvaccinated children have gotten autism. Also, check those school districts for how many ASD kids are in their classes. It could provide useful information for the vaccinated vs. the unvaccinated.

Laura Hayes

Ditto what Anne said!

Offit give it up

Um sure, Pauly. Blame Dr. Wakefield, not thee fact of parents actually having common sense and noticing that many children seem debilitated and hearing other parents who have seen their children regress. You'd have to be a complete idiot nowadays to give all the shots (and on time) your Ped asks you to give them.
