Studies that conclude ethyl mercury is safe are dismissed as flawed via other studies relying on the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) with actual dubious methodology. And via the findings of Mark and David Geier, infamous in scientific circles for advocating chemical castration with Lupron for autistic children. And the assertions of discredited scientists like Boyd Haley, notorious for preying on autistic children and their parents by advocating chelation therapy as a cure for autism.. . .
Although the book acknowledges a difference between ethyl mercury and methyl mercury, the authors extrapolate, against the evidence, that ethyl mercury is just as toxic, if not more toxic, than methyl mercury. Even their sources dispute this claim. Referencing paper after paper after paper on the dangers of mercury, the long list of citations seems impressive, until you follow the links and discover these studies are actually about the effects of methyl mercury, not ethyl mercury.

I have Kennedy's book here in my hands. IT IS ABOUT THE SCIENCE ON ETHYL MERCURY. YES, ETHYL MERCURY IS DEADLY. IT MAY CLEAR THE BLOOD FASTER...BUT IT DOESN'T LEAVE THE BODY AND ONE PLACE IT ENDS UP IS IN THE BRAINS OF CHILDREN....DAMAGING THEM FOR LIFE.
What puzzles me is why liberal outlets recognize "bad information" about vaccines but not GMOs. (Grist is now a notable exception, after publishing skewed information on GMOs for years.) For let's be clear: the science on GMOs is as solid and authoritative as it is on vaccines. So why are liberal outlets like the Huffington Post accepting of the scientific consensus on vaccines, but not GMOs?
So...genetically modified non-foods are good for you and fully vaccinating your kids is just fine too. How dare Robert Kennedy, Jr. "reignite a debate over thimerosal"!!
Haven't all the pharma-funded studies settled all that? (Evidently there's no spell check at Discover Magazine. I corrected all the "judgements" that appear here.)
I recently finished The Autism War, by Louis Conte, a fast-paced thriller in the style of John Grisham or Dan Brown, featuring international intrigue, corporate corruption and some seriously bad guys. Much as I enjoyed the book on those merits - the pacing is good, the plotting is terrific, and most of the characters are pretty interesting - the thing that really intrigued me about it was the fact that a lot of the material was based on real events.
This is an incredible book. It's about people just like us and communities just like ours---struggling to deal with a NIGHTMARE doctors and officials refuse to recognize is happening. Re the Union of Concerned Scientists -
Note the caption under the photo in the article:
"A doctor prepares to give a MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccination in Ethiopia. Childhood vaccines outside the U.S. still contain thimerosal because it has proven safe, effective, and economical."
Of course, the MMR has never contained thimerosal because it is a live vaccine. A scientist reviewing a book about vaccines should know at a minimum that very basic fact. It is Vaccines 101.
That embarrassing statement, together with the rest of that embarrassing article, probably stems from the author's lack of qualifications. Her bio states that she has a PhD in ENGLISH. Somehow I'd expect something different coming from the Union of Concerned "Scientists".
