Irish Children Subjected to Vaccination Experiments in 1930s
Managing Editor's Note: I'm pretty jaded after 18+ years in the autism/vaccine injury community, but this story, this horrible story knocked me for a loop. Imagine this horror in a Catholic nation, on innocent children, under the "care" of the religious and ask yourself, "Could that happen today - in a world of medicine for profit?" Has the current vaccination schedule ever been tested for cumulative safety? Do we know the long term ramifications of delaying common, survivable childhood disease such as chicken pox and measles? Are children circa 2014 healthier than their peers decades ago? Also, Dan Olmsted informed me that Diptheria was the first mercury preserved vaccine in the 1930's.
Thousands of children in Irish care homes at centre of 'baby graves scandal' were used in secret vaccine trials in the 1930s

Thanks for that link, Jeanette, I haven't time to watch the whole of it just now, but already I want to hug that poor man. There doesn't seem to be space for comments on these videos, unfortunately. Polly Tommey needs to talk to me on this topic, but I can't get through to her as all my communications are being diverted.

I found this when rereading -- "Polio- An American Story"
Notice the very bottom of this quote:
Here is a bit from "Polio; American Story"
"Hilary Koprowski a scientist in the private industry at Ledele Laboratores. All three were ambitious competitive men who got caught up in the growing clamor for a cure. All were Jewish, two having emigrated from Eastern Europe. All were lavisly financed: Sabin and Salk by the National Foundation, Koprowski by Lederll'e parent company, American Cyanamid. All faced ticklish moral questions about the safety of their vaccines as wess as the role of human testing.
Sabin and Koprowski championed a live-virus vaccine designed to trigger a natural infection strong enough to generate lasting antibodies against polio, yet too weak to cause a serious case of the disease. Salk favored a killed-virus version intended to stimulate the immune system to produce the desired antibodies without creating a natural infection. Most polio researcher backed the former strategy, contending that the live virus would provide better immunity against polio and lead to its complete eradication over time. The National Foundation remained officially neutral, though its leaders privately supported the simpler killed-virus vaccine believing it could be marketed more quickly and with fewer health risks to the public. Speed and safety apperad to be on Salk's side.
Acting mostly on it won, with little government support or oversight, the National Foundation conducted the largest medical experiment in American history---the so- called Salk Vaccine Field Trials of the 1954 involving almost two million elementary school children throughout the country. Never before had a public health experiment been subject to such intense media scrutiny. When the trials proved largely successful, Jonas Salk's life changed forever. He became an instant hero, a celebrity=scientist whose white lab coat and elf-effacing demeanor symbolized the concrete benefits fo medical research.
His competitors didn't give up the race; They simply chose a new course. having done what he could to undermine the 1954 Salk trials, Albert Sabin would wind up testing his own vaccine inside the Soviet Union -- a remarkable story of scientific copperation and intrigue in the midst of the cold war. Hilary Koprowski would continue his experiments in Ireland, Eastern Europe and Africa, with results and consequences that reverberate eerily to this day ."
So you see Ireland was a most loved place to prey upon test subjects too. Geeeeeee was not Koprowski - thought to have used the great apes instead of the green monkeys when making up polio vaccines for the people in Africa where AIDs did seem to have it's beginnings.
Poor Ireland -- The people lived there so poor that even the blackest slave in America was considered far better off.

The Medellin tragedy, that occured at Las Salas-Cunas in Medellin on the 14th of november 1930 after a third injection is investigated in this article from Historia Critica in 2012. The Medellin tragedy, that occurred around the 17th of november 1930, caused 19 death and not 48 as I have previously reported [hoping this error won't make me insane as the young interne who made the error in those days]
Posted by: Fièvre | June 23, 2014 at 01:55 AM
In 1930, the Florida State Board of Health reported "The death of a number of children at Medellin [48 children are said to have died of this error early in 1930 a few weeks before the Lübeck tragedy (bcg) was made public], Colombia, due to the injection of diphtheria toxin instead of antitoxin is to be deplored. Such an error could scarcely be made by anyone experienced in giving these treatments, especially since the toxin and toxin-antitoxin mixtures are put up in packages quite different from those containing antitoxin." http://archive.org/stream/193022/1930_22_djvu.txt

Many thanks for digging away at this. Presumably, the 2,051 were those used for the diptheria pilot and not remotely the full extent of medical experimentation in Ireland on vulnerable children.

Waiting for more precise information to come - mainly from the commission, but also from other sources...- I found an article from the Sunday World which was published the same day as the article from the MailOnline that is reported on this present page.
The Sunday World report some facts missing in the MailOnline : Dr. Dwyer is said to have sorted 25,000 medical journals during three years before establishing that 2,051 children and babies in residential care homes had been subjected to these controversial vaccinations.
The Sunday World adds :
"According to a 1932 medical journal, Wellcome lab workers who prepared the vaccine for diphtheria had a “complete lack of experience of its use with human beings”.
The initial trials were carried out on 436 kids from the general child population in cork
Some of the original batches of the alum-toxoid vaccine, which comprised of 9 per cent aluminium, caused severe reaction like fatal abscesses and hard lumps at the injection site.
As over one third of children vaccinated didn’t return for subsequent treatments, the severity of many of the side-effects were not known.
A controlled population of test subjects was required, the attending medical officer John Saunders said “There are but two suitable institutions in Cork, both of them orphanages, and they were placed at our disposal by the authorities. “
These orphanages are un-named in Saunders’ report but are thought to be St Joseph’s Industrial School for Boys and St Finbarr’s Industrial School for Girls."
https://www.sundayworld.com/top-stories/news/children-in-state-care-used-as-guinea-pigs-for-secret-drug-testing
[The Sunday World didn't precise where these informations come from : did they get ithem after contacting Dr Dwyer or did they extract them from the conference sourced here http://rcpilibrary.blogspot.fr/2013/11/rcpi-history-of-medicine-research-award.html ?]

Hi Fièvre
Thanks for keeping an eye on this. Obviously there is huge unfinished business in the Republic of Ireland - it was certainly odd the way the Tuam deaths were linked to vaccine trials two hundred miles away in Cork (and in several reports) but as you have also pointed out the Cork diptheria vaccine trials were not the only episode of this kind. We will certainly be returning.

Yesterday night Minister Charlie Flanagan made a statement wherein I digg this :
"Questions remain unanswered about the nature of adoptions and vaccine trials. Significant legal difficulties have been identified in seeking answers to these questions in the past and it is my intention that the Commission of Investigation can make progress where past investigations have failed....
...today Cabinet agreed to establish a Commission of Investigation, with statutory powers, to investigate mother and baby homes. The work of the interdepartmental group will continue no later than 30th June and its completed work will inform the Government’s decisions on the Terms of Reference and composition of the Commission of Investigation."
I hope AoA will recall this story at the end of the month...
Posted by: Fièvre | June 11, 2014 at 03:17 AM
AoA must know that this really is the resurgence of an old story :"I read that in the latter part of the 1950s in the United States, and in the United Kingdom in the early 1960s, Down's syndrome children were used as guinea pigs in tests involving live measles vaccines. At that time, those living in the institutions concerned were described as "sub-normal". Those tests were recently brought to the public's attention as a result of an article in The Sunday Telegraph by Victoria Macdonald, highlighting much of the research by solicitor Richard Barr and consultant Dr. Andrew Wakefield. In the past couple of weeks, articles in the Irish Independent also raised the issue. Their author, Brian McDonald, reported:"Children, some of whom were either mentally or physically handicapped, were used in drug trials carried out in Irish orphanages over twenty years ago." http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm199798/cmhansrd/vo970716/debtext/70716-13.htm
Today, Shona Murray wrote a pretty good and precise article :
"In the meantime, Professors Irene Hillary and Patrick Meenan successfully argued in the High Court and then the Supreme Court that the investigation was prejudice from the start, arguing that the term ‘abuse commission’ inferred that the vaccine or drug trials are inherently abusive.
Supporting the argument put forward by Professor Meenan, Justice Ronan Keane said these trials “appear to have only the most tenuous connection, if any, with the appalling social evil of the sexual and physical abuse of children in institutions, which was the specific area into which the commission was established to inquire”.
Justice Laffoy resigned her position as head of the abuse inquiry in late 2003, citing frustration at government departments which “effectively negated the guarantee of independence conferred on the Commission and militated against it being able to perform its statutory functions”.
Justice Sean Ryan undertook the abuse commission inquiry from 2003 until its completion in 2009, without the inclusion of evidence or any further investigation into the vaccine trials.
In 2012, the department of health returned the medical records obtained by Justice Laffoy to GlaxoSmithkline."http://www.newstalk.ie/Cabinet-to-discuss-secret-vaccine-trials

Accordind to Alliance Support Group, "Amnesty International has joined calls for an investigation into the deaths. The human rights organisation said the investigation must consider whether ill-treatment, neglect or other abuses were factors in the deaths...research carried out by Amnesty International in 2011 found that the issues of mother-and-baby homes and vaccine trials were not investigated fully."
It should be noted that this new scandal is occuring whereas "the Catholic church and the four religious orders that ran Magdalene Laundries in Ireland (Sisters of Charity, Sisters of Mercy, Good Shepherd Sisters, Sisters of our Lady of Charity) HAVE refused to accept unanimous survivor testimony that they were imprisoned and subjected to forced labour and torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. None of the orders have offered an apology to Magdalene survivors, nor have they contributed to the compensation fund. The Catholic Church has not made any attempt to instigate an internal investigation into Magdalene abuse, nor has it held anyone accountable for what happened" ( according to http://www.magdalenelaundries.com/press_releases.htm#280514 )

"In June 2001 an inquiry was ordered into trials on 58 children in 1960 and 1961, at six homes – including Bessborough. Results of those trials were published in the British Medical Journal in 1962. But that inquiry was halted when Professor Patrick Meenan, one of six authors of the study and then aged 86, said he should not have to appear on grounds of his age and ill health. A subsequent inquiry was blocked by Irene Hillary, a former professor of microbiology, in 2004. "

Benedetta, yes, does this partially explain the "hidden horde?" kids who were experimented on from the 30's?
Posted by: Jen | June 09, 2014 at 10:35 AM
How do you know that the children ranging from small infant - to 9 year olds piled in a septic tank did not die from a vaccine experiment instead of neglect?
They interviewed an elderly man who was raised in the same orphanage, and I think he was suprised when they told him. He -- he did not say -- Oh yes, they were horrible people that did not feed me and beat me -- he said he was lucky they did not kill him too -- Seems like he was at a lose of why they would have died unless the nuns were out right murdering kids was the only explanation that came to his mind.
Vaccine experiments and tricking nuns by pharma companys is hardly the first thing that would come to some one's mind - because vaccines are so hidden in the name of saving lives (not the opposite) .
Jenny thanks for the explaination. But it could be that you cannot keep such evil hiden things have a tendency to show up in a septic tank.
I see everyone is wanting to bash the Catholic Church -- but they did provide a hoe or at least tried to, when there was no state or government that would. This was the time of the great depression. A time when grown men were starving- and encouraged good people to follow a monster like Hilter. .

In my latest comment I referred to Mari Steed. It now appears to me, after googling on her name, that the recent article of the Mail is just the resurgence of an old affair that first developped in Ireland and then tried to take root in the US : has AoA ever written on it ?

Of notice : The news comes as the government decides what powers and scope a potential inquiry into the homes should have.

Mari Steed in her comments to an article tackling the subject confirms that the practise continued far beyond the 1930's : http://www.irishcentral.com/news/Religious-orders-allowed-over-2000-Irish-children-to-be-used-in-medical-experiments.html
That the Taioseach was in the United States was probably used by the journalists to frame their article in a way to give it a large audience and to prevent the affair(s) to finish in some media orphanage.
Posted by: Fièvre | June 09, 2014 at 03:22 AM
I saw a small paragraph about this in the San Francisco Chronicle. I am not surprised that this happened. The fact that this story is out now is a very promising bit of progress in exposing the misdeeds regarding vaccine trials. It should not be forgotten, however, that vaccine trials were performed in this country as well. They were done particularly on children born to mothers in jails and children in orphanages or institutions for the handicapped.
Tying this story into the Offit/John Stewart piece, these trials are now conducted mostly in third world countries (Africa, South America). The book "The Constant Gardener" is fiction. But according to the author John Le Carre, the reality of what is being done on behalf of pharmaceutical companies is much worse.
Posted by: Birgit Calhoun | June 08, 2014 at 11:58 PM
This is sickening. But the focus on why it's so horrible is being diluted by the fact that the church as involved (not that that is to be dismissed). Now one of the news feeds has pulled up some old "Magdalene laundry" information on how the church dealt with fallen women.
Call me cynical, but I don't think that we'd be hearing about this vaccine trial tragedy in the main stream news if the new Pope wasn't in the process of rocking the boat. First he refuses to get embroiled in the abortion debate and then tells folks that the church does not revolve solely around the idea of the wrongness of abortion and encourages the church to remember the service of the people and the poor. Then he discusses that celibacy is not an original mandate of the priesthood but has only been a part of it's traditions for a thousand years. Then to top things off he fires the whole financial crew in an attempt to re-orient the church bank, in an apparant attempt to weed out those "straw men" account holders (church folk helping non-church folk get their money into the bank - is he implying there might have been some minor money laundering going on here? Who were the players wanting to put their money anonymously into the church's coffers?)
The dude is breaking all the rules, betraying those false dichotomies that partisan politics so loves! Is he maybe knockin' about some major political players behind the scenes? Is he pissing off the Republicans? Diverging from their standard right-wing political messages? Aren't they also some of the major bankers/financial players in the international bank scene? Not that I care, if it brings dirty vaccine history into the forefront for a moment in the limelight. But I think that some people are dredging up these old church scandals to fire a little shot across the pope's bow. That vaccines were involved I think is just a detail to be tolerated, minimized, and then sidelined while the mainstream media gets steered to reporting on the church portion of the story.

This may clear up some of the confusion in the Daily Mail article:
http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/irish-baby-graves-scandal-2000-children-used-drug-guinea-pigs-1451719
Evidently Catherine Corless, who discovered the graves at Tuam, believes there are several other mass graves of children throughout Ireland, some of them at institutions where vaccine trials were held. We don't yet know how many of those children were killed by the vaccine experiments. I thought I was pretty hardened to this sort of thing, but this story hit me in the gut.

You only have to read " The River " by Edward Hooper to realise how ill informed people taking part in trials in Africa for the Polio vaccine were. Perhaps as he states in his book the start of Aids. Makes sense as Africa has been the major sufferer and homosexual men being used as guinea pigs for the vaccine to treat genital herpes. Ireland also I believe used babies in orphanages in the 50's and 60's for DPT trials. Dr Wakefield mentions in his book Callous Disregard babies in the late 80's being given MMR vaccine in the UK apparently trial stopped because of a baby death, of course no media coverage and no outcome reported. How do they get away with it.

Since M. Dwyer mentionned Alexander Glenny's vaccine it could be of interest to recall this : "Despite its great popularity in a number of U.S. cities, diphtheria toxin-antitoxin had significant adverse effects. Rare errors in balancing its two components could be devastating; ... Another research strategy thus emerged after Paul Ehrlich's work suggesting that bacterial toxins might be modified chemically to induce immunity without toxicity. In Britain, where toxin-antitoxin was never licensed, Alexander Glenny and his colleagues developed such a product almost serendipitously during the early 1920s ... Glenny thus by chance created a formalin-modified toxoid. His product, however, still incited significant adverse effects, and was only administered in combination with antitoxin" http://www.nature.com/pr/journal/v55/n2/full/pr200452a.html
It might be that in the newly established Irish State things went not as one would have wished...In this domain as in others, Ireland has a great deal of historical work waiting.
BUT in 2014 - 2014 !- an article published in Vaccines - yes Vaccines !- puts : " However, the discordance in formulation protocols used by different laboratories to adsorb antigens to alum (or the complete lack of formulation by some), or the use of alum from different manufacturers are a major reason for why immunogenicity data obtained with the “same” vaccine (alum-antigen combination) differ between studies....Surprisingly few studies have been published in which different alum formulations are compared side-by-side [31], but the differences in the formulation of alum-adjuvanted vaccines contribute to the inability of alum to serve as a reliable reference or standard adjuvant" http://www.mdpi.com/2076-393X/2/2/252/htm

To be clear the "orphan" children who were subject to unauthorised vaccine experiments in the 1930s were not the ones who were buried in a mass grave (who apparently died over a period of the years 1925-61) at a different home. The Mail ran together two stories about the shabby treatment of illegitimate children in Irish convent homes in the middle of the last century with confusing results. The greater problem which this highlights is how vulnerable adults and children are recruited in pharmaceutical experiments and this remains a live issue. Unfortunately, there are many contemporary reports about this on Vera Sharav's Alliance for Human Research Protection website:

Linda;
I was told by all my living parents, aunts and uncles forn in the 1920s - it was the typhoid shot. Which is a bad vaccine -- even listed as so in the wiki, and we all know how wiki loves all vaccines.
I would think that researchers would target orphans all together in one place and orphans at that with only a few nuns watching over them to do experiments on.
I don't think the Applachians would be so idea since they would depend on a country doctor coming into a community one day in the Fall; vaccinating the school kids, and leaving with out any one of "Great intelligence and Scienific Knowledge" Left behind to observe what happened.
However; as regulations for orphans and foster care and the like became wiser such going ons became harder -- they now probably would love an isolated area to do their research.
That would be the Natives in South America -- I heard that the MMR vaccine was researched on them.

Stories on these trials go back a number of years.
What is amazing is the fact that the vaccine trials have been known about FOR YEARS:

AN INDEPENDENT inquiry should be set up to examine vaccine trials carried out on babies and children in orphanages and mother-and-baby homes in the 1960s and 1970s, a former resident has said.
2012 Belfast (UK) Telegraph: Ireland's hidden scandal: child vaccine trials
http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/local-national/republic-of-ireland/irelands-hidden-scandal-child-vaccine-trials-28553907.html
Suspicions that vaccine trials had taken place on vulnerable Irish children -- many of whom were in state care -- first surfaced in the early 1990s.
As the current decade dawned, former residents of children's homes began to publicly raise concerns that they had been the subject of experimental trials.
However, it was not until 1997 that the State gave an assurance that it would formally inquire into the issue.
These trials were still going on in the 1970s. Stories were out in 2010 about it.
Maybe it's the discovery of all the buried babies that has reopened this horrific event.

Laura,
Yes, of course, in the UK we don't have mandates we just have misinformed consent (plus a lot of bullying) and most of the choice removed by the lack of availability of single vaccines. Possibly we have even higher compliance than the US but it is diffcult to get reliable information about this either side of the pond I suspect. I think our officials have decided to leave it so that the legal responsibility for vaccination in the UK is left with the parents absolving the state from significant liability, while any serious prospect of litigation against the companies is blocked by our highly politicised Legal Aid Agency - a way of doing things which requires no legislation.
I am sure you are nevertheless right that the first and most basic step in the US is to get rid of the mandates. I am sure you are also right that the the pharmaceutical companies are as scary and ethicless as at any time in the past (possibly even more powerful), and if you could not do now in Ireland what they did in the last century there are plenty of other places left in the world where things like this can happen and plenty of ways it is still happening in the developed world by bureaucratic sleight of hand. As you say there is no way in which the real risks are ever explained through mainstream channels.
Meanwhile denial and harrassment are endemic in both US and British systems.

Here it is ( the Michael Dwyer's...speach) : http://rcpilibrary.blogspot.fr/2013/11/rcpi-history-of-medicine-research-award.html

Truly, how is this much different from what is happening day in and day out not only in the U.S., but across the world? Our 3 children, too, were human guinea pigs in our nation's immoral and unethical vaccine program. It is a program based on lies, deception, cover-ups, no oversight, shoddy vaccine "trials" and "studies" (if they can even be called that)...and as a matter of fact, everything about our nation's vaccine program is so unbelievably UNETHICAL, that even if a doctor decided to try to offer informed consent (does that really even EVER happen in our country?), he can't, for there is no actual factual data upon which to base what he says.
I will continue to repeat that if there is one thing, and only one thing, that each of us should be united over and fight together for, it is to put all of our efforts into a FEDERAL BAN on vaccine mandates. Mandates are a pox (pun intended) on every aspect of what we claim to be as a nation.
Thank you, Kim, for bringing this horrific story to our attention, and may all have the eyes to see how this horror continues today right here in our own country on our own children, in broad daylight for all to see.

Thanks,John. I wonder how much these two sad facts are related. Chances are there were more of these unethical vaccine trials as well.

I searched for the original article from Michael Dwyer of Cork University’s School of History, who "found the child vaccination data by trawling through tens of thousands of medical journal articles and archive files" ( as written in the MailOnline ). On the website of the school of history/ university college cork I just found : http://www.ucc.ie/en/history/news/fullstory-479027-en.html (which refers to ...Mailonline). It should be noted that Michael Dwyer was shortlisted for the Royal College of Physicians History of Medicine Research Award 2013 (http://www.ucc.ie/en/history/news/archive/fullstory-417416-en.html).

Basically we have two stories here - the Michael Dwyer story about unethical Borroughs Wellcome trials and Catherine Corless story about a mass grave (of infants who died between 1925 and 1961) but related by the Irish convent theme.

Catherine Corliss (sp?), historian, was right and diligent in bringing up this atrocity committed against vulnerable children. I am happy that the Irish prime minister is following it up. Hopefully the effort won't be stifled or sabotaged.
Does this answer partially the *why* of the "hidden horde?" Were there some elderly persons in institutions or otherwise affected by the dosage of mercury they never asked for?? Interestingly, much of the criticism on the DM is directed at the religious institutions and not Burroughs Wellcome or the "health" authorities/researchers/doctors. Completely unethical.

Benedetta,
Haven't you shared in the past your suspicions about vaccines given to your Appalachian community in that same time period?
Posted by: Linda1 | June 07, 2014 at 12:02 PM
This was on the community board late last night - never mentioned dipheria vaccine experiments -- just said they were malnourished. It was taken off by this morning, already?

Stalin callously observed: "A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic."
Still .. it never ceases to amaze me .. how intelligent, compassionate, educated people .. can be so easily swayed by someone in "authority" .. wearing a white coat .. and .. calling himself a doctor.
As Zed says .. "the more things change, the more they stay the same".

Western pharmaceutical manufacturers, today, conduct studies in impoverished nations, offering monetary compensation to participants who cannot read or write. Then, they call it informed consent.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I'm pleased that this is considered scandalous in a general topic newspaper.
