Mothers of autistic children are significantly more depressed and stressed than mothers of children without the disorder a study by researchers at the University of Illinois found. While the conclusion may not be surprising given the added stresses involved with raising an autistic child, it reveals that autism may be especially stressful on parents even compared to raising children with other disabilities.

 What really depresses and stresses me is the total lack of concern about autism FROM EVERYONE. That includes doctors, health officials, and the media. And I'm sure pharma could come up with a prescription drug just for the autism mom---"Ask your doctor if XXX is right for you."

Already, there is ample evidence that environmental exposures can affect neurodevelopment. A growing number of published, peer-reviewed studies implicate flame retardants, vinyl flooring, proximity to freeway pollution, agricultural pesticides, coal-fired power plant emissions and other air pollutants including airborne heavy metals and possibly solvents as potential risk factors for ASD. Parents need help understanding which chemicals may be risk factors for their children's health. We are bombarded with chemical acronyms such as PAHs, PFOAs, PBDEs, BPA, phthalates and PCBs.

The vast majority of these chemicals entered our lives over the past 70 years. Our exposures have changed enormously, but our genes have not. Our bodies' elaborate detoxification systems are not equipped to deal with many of these novel chemicals. This situation is of greatest concern for children, infants and pregnant women, who tend to spend the most time indoors.

Infectious diseases that we normally think of as rare in the United States are making a comeback. In recent years, pertussis -- also known as whooping cough -- has returned to the headline. A measles outbreak that struck a Texas megachurch community late last summer sickened 21 people. And just recently, at least 16 people got sick during a measles outbreak in Ohio. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week reported 13 measles outbreaks so far in 2014-- the most since 1996.. . .

Why are so many outbreaks happening? Although it's a complex problem, health officials say the key culprit is that more and more people are choosing not to get their kids vaccinated against these diseases.

Wouldn't it be nice if anyone cared this much about one in every 68 kids with autism?  I posted comments.

That says something deeply troubling not just about the outlook for childrens' health, but about human obtuseness, particularly as outbreaks of measles strike New York City, Orange County, Calif. and elsewhere, while mumps cases spread throughout Columbus, Ohio. Despite this real-time, real-world evidence of the damage caused by the anti-vaccine crazies-who have spent the better part of 16 years peddling the fable that vaccines are filled with never-fully-specified "toxins" that cause autism and an ever-changing pu pu platter of other imaginary ills-many parents and even some doctors continue to close their eyes.
