This Pediatrics review of autism and gut disorders found higher rates of constipation, diarrhea, and stomach pain among autistic people. But the authors do not once mention anxiety.

That in spite of the fact that anxiety is a key feature of autism and that research suggests that autism and anxiety are indeed linked. And that gut conditions like diarrhea and constipation and gut pain are often related to anxiety.

When children aren’t autistic and they have stomach pain or constipation or diarrhea, the frequent conclusion is that stress and anxiety are the cause and predictive of anxiety in adulthood. Indeed, with that little nervous system parked there in our gut, it’s no wonder that things get a little seized up and out of rhythm when the rest of us does. . . .

Another thing for which to thank Andrew Wakefield, a self-described “academic gastroenterologist.” Someone with that specialization would have been the perfect person to make this connection between anxiety in autistic people and gut discomfort. One more among so many opportunities for understanding and intervention missed, even as public health in general and the health of autistic children specifically continue to suffer.

Wakefield is a "self-described 'academic gastroenterologist'"?  Is Emily Willingham saying that he only thinks he's a GI specialist?  So did Wakefield fail to see that the bowel disease in autistic kids was just the result of anxiety?  I posted comments.

ABC 7, Los Angeles

"MMR seems to have probably one of the worst reputations and so they tend to want to avoid that," said Kao.

Kao says the fears stem back to a recently discredited study linking MMR to autism. She often educates parents about the vaccine's safety.

Yes, it is vaccines. Yes, it is all the other toxins we're swimming in. YES, THE MEDIA IS COVERING IT UP.  I posted comments.

We are experiencing an autism epidemic in the US and the mainstream media won't touch it. There is much hand-wringing over the latest numbers, but any suggestion of environmental toxins is considered off-limits.

The following opinion piece, written by four scientists (myself included), was submitted to the Toronto Star on April 9, but they refused to publish it because it is "too controversial." It was then submitted to the New York Times on April 11, but they have not responded at all. It seems there is a media blackout on this topic.

A physician, Dr. Marvin Anderson, has been treating children with ASD in his clinic at Abba's Place since 2009. He has written a book entitled Autism Prevention, Care and Management. In his book, Dr. Anderson describes his experiences helping children with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and he proposes a positive and hopeful solution to ending the autism epidemic that is spreading throughout the world. His treatment for ASD and ADHD is primarily directed to the digestive tract, including the liver. Animal studies have shown an intriguing connection between inflammation in the intestinal tract and inflammation in the brain. Autism also can involve impairments in the body's detoxification pathways.

Dr. Anderson believes our one-size-fits-all vaccine program is harming children--lots of children.

Dr. Anderson has discussed his plan for ending the autism epidemic in detail with state of Michigan Representative Ray Franz. The plan consists of enacting three laws by the state legislature.

I. Require that all newborn infants receive an autism prevention screening test prior to receiving any vaccinations.

II. Restrict the prescription of vaccinations to a physician who is board certified as a Vaccination Specialist.

III. Prohibit deposition of hazardous waste in fertilizer fillers on farmland.

Of course the most important part of this story is the fact that A DOCTOR is saying these things. (And by an interesting coincidence that FDA just announced that they're cracking down on people using detoxification as a treatment for autism.)

Autism affects the development of motor skills in infants and toddlers, and the more severe their disorder, the slower their progress in being able to do things such as grasp objects and move around.

That's the finding of a study that assessed more than 150 children between the ages of 12 and 33 months. One hundred and ten youngsters in the study had autism, and 49 children didn't have the disorder. The children with autism were nearly a year behind typical children in fine motor skills, such as holding a spoon or a small toy.

The youngsters with autism were also about six months behind in gross motor skills, such as running and jumping, according to the study published in the April issue of the journal Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly.

Same old same old. I posted a comment.  It was removed.

CBS News

What many parents of children with autism have long suspected -- that autism and gastrointestinal complaints often go together -- is now supported by a new study.

The study, a review of medical research, found that children with autism are more than four times as likely as their typically developing peers to have digestive difficulties such as abdominal pain, diarrhea or constipation.

The study authors stress that doesn't mean the gastrointestinal troubles are the cause of autism, as one widely discredited theory has suggested, or that something about the biology of autism causes stomach complaints.

No cause-and-effect relationship has been established.

Notice "no cause-and-effect relationship" ...just more of the mystery, I guess.  This is Dr. Andrew Wakefield's research.  I'm sure this study will fade quickly.  I posted comments.

Dr. Mercola

A groundbreaking new drug safety study in Shanghai, China, provides some much needed information about the frequency of vaccine drug reactions among children.

Adverse drug reactions are a serious public health concern and one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide.1 More than a half million children are treated every year for adverse drug reactions in US outpatient clinics and emergency rooms.2

The Shanghai study, based on reported pediatric adverse drug reactions (ADRs) for 2009, found that 42 percent were caused by vaccines, with reactions ranging from mild skin rashes to deadly reactions like anaphylaxis and death. Of all the drugs causing adverse reactions among children, vaccines are the most commonly reported.3,4

This study is particularly significant because the vast majority of reports came from physicians, pharmacists, and other health care providers. Less than three percent of the reports were from consumers.

Another safety report5 about pediatric drug reactions was just published by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) and lists the top 15 drugs causing serious adverse reactions in children.

Donna K, thank you for your moral support. Sadly, the focus of research must be the brain, especially the brain systems required for language. The language areas are far from complete at birth, and their maturation follows an orderly sequence over a child’s first 4 to 5 years. Sadly, “neural plasticity” is a matter of wishful thinking.

Trophic neurotransmitters produced in nuclei of the brainstem auditory pathway guide the postnatal development of the temporal and frontal lobe connections required for language. The cerebral cortex did not develop normally in monkeys subjected to asphyxia at birth. No one expects a monkey to learn to speak, but disruption of brain maturation in humans is similar. This is why (like it or not) research with animals is done.

Language is distinctive in the human species, and results from the most advanced sequence of neurological development. Damage at birth or during the first 3 to 4 years by any factor that disrupts aerobic metabolism must be avoided. Epidemiology has not “proved” that clamping the umbilical cord or vaccines are safe. There is no health benefit from clamping the umbilical cord. Vaccines have not been carefully enough tested (in animal experiments) for possible toxic effects on the metabolically most active sites within the brain. These sites are in the auditory pathway and the basal ganglia.

Eileen,
I always look forward to your comments, especially because I also am very interested in learning how, physiologically, my child lost the ability to say words she had previously spoken along with losing receptive language comprehension. Thank you for your continued efforts as a neuroscientist to keep us informed with what you have discovered.

So Dr. Wakefield and colleagues who worked on this gut issue way back when are now being vilified for having worked on these (gut) issues. Willingham just put a new low on twisting of the truth!

RE: Forbes /Blame Wakefield For Missed Autism-Gut Connection

http://www.forbes.com/sites/emilywillingham/

This Emily article is almost comical. We all know that vaccine brain injury can be called "anything but Autism."

As they can no longer deny the "measles gut virus / Autism connection" FIRST NOTED by Dr. Wakefield in 1995, they have to call it something else and pretend that they have now just discovered it.

Somehow the past 20 years, modern medicine has not noticed the thousands of children coming into their offices with chronic diarrhea from MMR vaccine strain measles infecting their gut and colons. This would now be the fault of Dr. Wakefield ???

Emily Willingham of Forbes thinks she is on the cutting edge of science reporting. What will she discover next???

Eileen Nicole Simon

I submitted the comment below on Forbes, but am on vacation with limited internet. See if it comes across here. I should add that all children since the mid 1980s risked asphyxiation at birth caused by the umbilical cord being clamped before the first breath. Following is my comment on GI disorder as a result of brainstem autonomic system injury:

Autism is a neurological disorder. Why the language areas of the brain fail to fully develop should be the priority question for research. I believe a possible reason should have been recognized decades ago, and as the result of oxygen insufficiency at birth. Difficult birth has been documented (for many decades) in the histories of children who develop autism.

Monkeys subjected to asphyxia at birth were found to have prominent damage in nuclei of the brainstem auditory pathway. The basal ganglia were also affected. Impairment of the auditory system and the basal ganglia should be investigated as possible reasons for language problems and repetitive (choreo-athetoid) movement disorder. These are the primary afflictions in autism.

Brainstem damage often includes impairment of autonomic functions, like intestinal peristalsis. Alcoholics and abusers of other drugs develop prominent GI problems. Alcohol affects the same brain areas damaged by asphyxia at birth, because blood flow to nuclei in the auditory pathway and basal ganglia is higher than to any other area of the brain.

My autistic son is 51 years old, and I have now spent most of my life trying to understand how his difficult birth led to his neurological problems. I even went back to school, obtained a PhD in biochemistry and neuroscience, but remain only a faint cry in the wilderness.

I think Willingham is saying that Wakefield has such a stranglehold on the issue that endless phalanxes of researchers have gone off on wild goose chases after physiological causes when the correct answer has been in plain sight all along--the yips. (Why didn't they just ask Emily and save themselves all that trouble? I'm sure they will after this.)

I guess it's like Aristotle being such a dominant intellectual figure that scientists up until the Renaissance assumed he was right about everything...except the first part is opposite or something?

The Pediatrics article also has its own Alice-in-Wonderland moment. It says that the data being insufficient, the most "logical" conclusion is that the pathophysiology in ASD is the same as in the rest of the population.

Have some tea! Time to change places, everybody! Emily, can you tell me why a raven is like a writing desk? I know you know.
