Is there a link between vaccines and autism, cellphones and cancer, the HIV virus and the CIA? Nearly half of Americans believe the answer is yes for at least one of these discredited conspiracy theories.
Two University of Chicago social scientists gauged beliefs in about six widely discussed medical conspiracy theories. Fully 37 percent of those surveyed endorsed the belief that the Food and Drug Administration, under pressure from drug companies, is suppressing natural cures for cancer and other diseases. One in five said they agreed that doctors and the government "still want to vaccinate children even though they know these vaccines cause autism and other psychological disorders." And 36 percent were on the fence, saying they neither agreed nor disagreed with the discredited contention that vaccines cause autism.
If all their experts and all the research they've come up with don't work, we must just be paranoid/desperate/crazy. I posted comments but it looks like they were removed.
The supposed link between autism and vaccinations has been debunked over and over, and yet the belief still persists. The Centers for Disease Control examined the question of autism and the safety of vaccines in general:
Evidence from several studies examining trends in vaccine use and changes in autism frequency does not support such an association between thimerosal and autism. Furthermore, a scientific reviewExternal Web Site Icon by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) concluded that “the evidence favors rejection of a causal relationship between thimerosal–containing vaccines and autism.” CDC supports the IOM conclusion that there is no relationship between vaccines containing thimerosal and autism rates in children. . . .
I suppose you could make the argument that the CDC is in the pockets of Big Pharma and are doing their bidding by cooking the books on vaccines. I’ve seen it all over the internet and in emails so I know that someone is reading that crap. And, if you wished, you could ignore the studies done by respected scientific organizations (or similarly lump them in with the CDC as doing Big Pharma’s bidding) that say there is no causal link between vaccines and autism, and substitute pseudo scientific pronouncements from people selling a book or product, telling you not to vaccinate your kids.
"That crap" on the internet about vaccines and autism...
I posted a bunch of comments--all links working!
Some autism-related non-profits are associated with questionable medical practices. In the world of autism, there are those who hold to the belief -- despite mountains of evidence to the contrary -- that the rise in autism diagnoses is due to vaccines or other products of the modern world (cell phones, ultrasounds, car exhaust). Built around that belief are "treatments" (drugs and similar products) whose purpose is to remove metals from the body, delay or halt the onset of puberty, and so forth. Often, these groups not only recommend but also sell such products. If you are not interested in supporting such efforts, don't send money.
". . . despite mountains of evidence to the contrary--that the rise in autism diagnoses due to vaccines" . .
Lisa Jo Rudy, that only works if you ignore Hannah Poling and the 83 cases of vaccine injury resulting in autism that were compensated by the federal government, as well as 200 independent studies raising concerns about vaccine safety.
Maybe that's why there's no COMMENT SECTION ON THIS STORY.
Brown said while some parents are into organics and natural remedies for diseases, some still hold the belief that immunizations can put certain children at risk for autism.
It was speculated that the very small amounts of mercury that were used as a preservative called Thimerosal in some vaccines, specifically the MMR vaccine, might be a cause for autism.
Autism is a chronic developmental disorder, often first identified in toddlers from age 18 to 30 months. The MMR vaccine is administered just before the peak age of the onset of autism symptoms. . . .
It's a really scary world out there when a doctor talks like this. Is it any wonder that they see nothing wrong with an epidemic of developmentally disabled children?
I tried posting comments but nothing is showing up. I guess that's what you do when your information is WRONG.
Autism Families CONNECTicut (AFC) will host its fifth annual fundraising event, "A Sparkling Celebration" on Saturday, March 29 at Alumni Hall at The Conference Center at St. Thomas, Bloomfield, from 7 to 10 p.m. The event will benefit AFC’s recreational, social and family activities for children living with autism and their families.
The celebration will feature complimentary catered appetizers and wine, champagne and jazz, and exciting silent and live auction items. The honorary chair of the event is Tizziana Weber, director of Communications at Pratt & Whitney, the presenting sponsor. Nicole Nalepa, Eyewitness News 3, will be Master of Ceremony.
Wouldn't it be nice if in the midst of all the celebrating, we could hear about failure of health officials and mainstream medicine to do anything to address this disorder?
Or, how about telling everyone that in Feb the CT Department of Developmental Services announced that they have no money to help autistic adults and that a young adult with autism "would likely live with his parents until they die."
The Newtown Bee put it this way: "The erosion of state funding for people with developmental disabilities has left many parents worried about what will happen to their children when they die or become unable to take care of them."
Not much to celebrate here. (This story is in the ENTERTAINMENT section.)
Shippensburg University's Old Main tower will again be bathed in blue Wednesday, April 2, as part of the Light It Up Blue campaign on World Autism Day.
Light It Up Blue, now in its fifth year, is a global initiative to raise awareness about autism, according to the organizing group Autism Speaks. Landmarks around the world will display blue to show their support, the group said. . . .
Autism statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identify around one in 88 American children as being on the autism spectrum, according to the Autism Speaks' website. An estimated one out of 54 boys and one in 252 girls are diagnosed with autism in the United States. ASD is estimated to affect more than 2 million individuals in the United States and tens of millions worldwide.
I posted this comment and two others. I'm going to put them on all the feel-good April Awareness stories.
It would be wonderful if April addressed what autism is actually doing to our children, if there were calls for action and answers, if health officials were made to account for millions of wasted research dollars.
What should be AUTISM ALARM MONTH is instead, AUTISM AWARENESS, ACCOMMODATION, AND ACCEPTANCE MONTH.
To understand what this disorder is really like for countless thousands of families, see the new novel, The Autism War.
This is by Louis Conte, father of triples, two of whom have autism. It describes how autism affects children and families and how society is being forced to accommodate an epidemic of disabled children no one in mainstream medicine can reasonably explain.
If it's not approved for use in the United States, look no further than the Food and Drug Administration. The federal agency is deeply influenced by the ever-powerful anti-vaccine lobby and vaccine manufacturers simply don't want to deal with that.
“If manufacturers have an innovative vaccine, they'll go for approval first in Europe because they know that's an easier approval process,” Dr. Amesh Adalja, an infectious diseases physician at UPMC, told me. “They don't want go through all the headaches of dealing with the anti-vaccine lobby.”
And there you have it. The Jenny McCarthys of the world are putting our children and others at risk. McCarthy is the TV talk show host who swears vaccines cause autism. She's been on a crusade against vaccines since her son developed autism-like symptoms that she claims are the fault of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine.
I'm seeing "autism-like symptoms" in McCarthy comments.
I'm SO SICK of reporters lying to us about the vaccine controversy. They ignore the disabled children all around them and pretend that Jenny McCarthy has convinced thousands of parents that vaccines cause autism. These people are either LAZY, SCARED, CONFLICTED, OR JUST IGNORANT. Regardless, they have no right to cover this issue. I posted six comments...including the one below. If anyone brings up Jenny McCarthy, they should also include Drs. David Feinberg, Jerry Kartzinel, and Jay Gordon. They collaborate on her books and appear on Larry King, but the media pretends they don't exist.
Some of Georgia's most vulnerable children were turned away by the politicians they'd asked to help them.
Medical marijuana for sick kids, insurance coverage for children with autism, a major reform of the child protection agency DFCS – all lost to raw bare-fisted politicking as the General Assembly adjourned for the year. . . .
Supporters of the bill say the biggest foe was the insurance industry, whose lobbyists argued it would make rates skyrocket. Advocates point to the three dozen states with autism coverage and say it would have raised rates by less than 50 cents per person per month.
We all are aware of the power and influence of the pharmaceutical industry and it looks insurance companies are also in control.
BUT, as I've said, as long as no one over at the CDC gives a damn about what autism is doing to our children, no one has to do anything. Why should they? It's genetic. It's always been around. It's not a crisis. We never made insurance companies cover it in the past and we all got along fine. Why should anything have to change?
When thousands of autistic young adults in GA are lined up at social services in the coming years these legislators will have to deal with an economic burden they helped create.
WXIA is siding with parents and children in this. Wouldn't it be nice if they'd call attention to the autism epidemic no one addresses in the same way?
Biochemist Katherine Reid said she tried everything to cure her child's autism. Then she eliminated MSG from the girl's diet and saw symptoms fade away.
But it was only when Katherine Reid cut monosodium glutamate, commonly called MSG, from her autistic daughter's meals that she saw a staggering difference in the girl's behavior.
Seven-year-old Brooke seemed to be completely free of autistic symptoms such as temper tantrums, hypersensitivity to light and seizures.
Okay, let's talk about MSG in VACCINES AND AUTISM. . . I posted a link to the CDC's website where they openly admit:
Common substances found in vaccines. . .
Aluminum gels or salts of aluminum which are added as adjuvants to help the vaccine stimulate a better response. Adjuvants help promote an earlier, more potent response, and more persistent immune response to the vaccine.
Antibiotics which are added to some vaccines to prevent the growth of germs (bacteria) during production and storage of the vaccine. No vaccine produced in the United States contains penicillin.
Egg protein is found in influenza and yellow fever vaccines, which are prepared using chicken eggs. Ordinarily, persons who are able to eat eggs or egg products safely can receive these vaccines.
Formaldehyde is used to inactivate bacterial products for toxoid vaccines, (these are vaccines that use an inactive bacterial toxin to produce immunity.) It is also used to kill unwanted viruses and bacteria that might contaminate the vaccine during production. Most formaldehyde is removed from the vaccine before it is packaged.
Monosodium glutamate (MSG) and 2-phenoxy-ethanol which are used as stabilizers in a few vaccines to help the vaccine remain unchanged when the vaccine is exposed to heat, light, acidity, or humidity.
Thimerosal is a mercury-containing preservative that is added to vials of vaccine that contain more than one dose to prevent contamination and growth of potentially harmful bacteria.
“Light It Up Blue” is a global initiative to celebrate World Autism Awareness Day. On April 2 the international goal is to shine a blue light on communities throughout the world to raise awareness and take action for autism. The event will provide a community resource fair and speeches by students and parents affected by autism. The resource fair will involve groups offering support services from the campus and community, including the Autism Society of Ventura County, regional service providers, and CI’s Disability Resource Programs. The event also celebrates the unique talents and skills of people with autism and warmly welcomes autistic individuals, their families and anyone in the community who wishes to learn more. Participants will receive free, blue light bulbs and glow sticks, while supplies last.
The whole concept of celebrating a disorder with no known cause, prevention, or cure IS INSANE. Something striking an epidemic number of CHILDREN should be cause for alarm. The comment section is disabled on this story or I'd ask what they mean by "take action for autism." Hopefully it's more than just giving out free blue lights and glow sticks.
Kids are suffering and families are desperate for help . . .they're lighting the world up in blue.
