A Bay Area biochemist thinks she's found a sort of autism smoking gun: monosodium glutamate, or MSG. It's a chemical compound almost exclusively connoted with Chinese food, but Katherine Reid points out that it's found in all but 5% of processed food, largely unbeknownst to us: It appears on the food label only about 1% of the time.
But if things like flavor or flavoring, soy protein, whey protein, pectin, corn starch, or stock make an appearance . . . you're consuming MSG, she says, needlessly.
The San Francisco Chronicle points out there "is no science to back up many of her claims," with two doctors confirming to the paper that no MSG studies of the sort have been carried out.
But then there's Reid and her 7-year-old daughter. As the Chronicle explains, Reid's youngest child, Brooke, began showing signs of autism at 2: wild tantrums, repetitive behavior, communication issues, digestive problems.
Tests revealed the girl was moderately autistic. Reid began researching diet options, first eliminating gluten and dairy; then she read about MSG, and the role glutamate plays in the body: It's essential for learning and function, but she came to believe that too much of it interferes with neural function-and that the glutamine in MSG can exacerbate the imbalance.
This is a biochemist saying this---not an ex-Playboy bunny.
Dr. Reid is talking about MSG in food....but, check out the CDC's website below. There's MSG in "a few vaccines." Any studies to show that's safe? Probably not. However I'm sure the CDC can quickly show us that injectable MSG is perfectly safe with instantaneous population studies.
Common substances found in vaccines include:
Aluminum gels or salts of aluminum which are added as adjuvants to help the vaccine stimulate a better response. Adjuvants help promote an earlier, more potent response, and more persistent immune response to the vaccine.
See also: "Aluminum in Vaccines: What you should know [2 pages]"
Antibiotics which are added to some vaccines to prevent the growth of germs (bacteria) during production and storage of the vaccine. No vaccine produced in the United States contains penicillin.
Egg protein is found in influenza and yellow fever vaccines, which are prepared using chicken eggs. Ordinarily, persons who are able to eat eggs or egg products safely can receive these vaccines.
Formaldehyde is used to inactivate bacterial products for toxoid vaccines, (these are vaccines that use an inactive bacterial toxin to produce immunity.) It is also used to kill unwanted viruses and bacteria that might contaminate the vaccine during production. Most formaldehyde is removed from the vaccine before it is packaged.
Monosodium glutamate (MSG) and 2-phenoxy-ethanol which are used as stabilizers in a few vaccines to help the vaccine remain unchanged when the vaccine is exposed to heat, light, acidity, or humidity.
Thimerosal is a mercury-containing preservative that is added to vials of vaccine that contain more than one dose to prevent contamination and growth of potentially harmful bacteria.
VANCOUVER-Geneticist Wendy Chung took to the TED stage on Wednesday to discuss one of today's most perplexing problems: the twenty-fold increase in autism diagnoses in children over the past three decades. What we know for certain (and what she made clear) is that vaccines are absolutely not to blame. There is no credible evidence to support the assertion that vaccination causes autism, and there is plenty of evidence to rule it out.
Autism diagnoses are certainly on the rise, though; one in 88 children will be diagnosed with autism this year. But the rise of diagnoses does not necessarily mean that there has been a rise in autism. In fact, Chung does not believe that there has been a massive increase in autism cases. "The vast majority of it is the increase in diagnoses," Chung said. Medical professionals are now far better trained to detect and diagnose autism, so it's diagnosed more often.
Ken Fisher and Wendy Chung are out to convince us that all the autism affecting our children is normal and acceptable. It's right in time for April--Celebrate Autism Month. Fisher and Chung may be satisfied that this is a genetic disorder and that there's been no real increase but I'm still waiting for SOMEONE to show us the adults. And I don't mean adults who'd rather stay home and read a book instead of going to a party. I want to see the group homes and institutions where the non-verbal, hand-flapping adults in diapers are living. Where are the 40, 60, and 80 year olds who display the same signs of classic autism we see in our kids? Where are the elderly autistic people whose medical history includes a sudden and dramatic loss of learned skills, including speech? Where are the autistic adults with the gut problems and seizures that we see in so many children?
Georgia lawmakers will end the 2014 legislative session tomorrow, and tonight hope for the Autism Insurance bill hangs in the balance.
Anna Bullard of Lyons, Georgia has been fighting for the bill that was stalled in committee for years.
The Senate showed strong support passing the bill unanimously twice this year.
Is this a surprise, really? Autism is merely a medical curiosity. It's never even been called a crisis by the people in Atlanta. No one in authority is ever sure if there's been a real increase in the autism rate. If all that's true, then we've always managed--without insurance coverage. The media, health officials and mainstream medicine could cause less about what autism is doing to our children, why should lawmakers?
We're still waiting. The Dachel Media Update is sponsored by Lee Silsby Compounding Pharmacy and their OurKidsASD brand. Martha;
I know a lot of people say born with autism.
I don't know if you could tell it is autism but I suppose your child did not do well on the baby test when he was born with his reflexes --- and you can just tell if there is neurological problesms. Right? Is that what you mean?
Mine blew the baby test out through the roof.
But he was born with colic -cried alot and loud -- all day that he was born and continued to do so for the next 4 months.
I myself had GI problems all while I was carrying him -- but I had had another tetanus shot, aka DTP shot a couple of years earlier. I had even forgotten that I had had it. So I had one at 21 years old and then another at 28 years old.
My son reacted to his first DPT shot with high temperatures and a week later I took him in to the peds because I just felt something was not right and they found not only a heart murmur that was not there before -- not reported in the hospital, or first baby visit or during the chick up right before his DPT shot -- not only that but the X ray showed a swollen left venticle chamber of the heart -- making it look like a boot.
Of course I did not figure out the vaccine connection because I was dumb as dirt and so why am I so put out that the rest of the nation that suspects vaccines is only 20 percent.
After all a few years before my son's birth, My daughter had Kawasakis - 7 weeks after her fourth DPT shot.
If finally on sunk in that vaccines might be causing problems when I watched both of them a month apart run temps of 105 - pass out and gasp for air -- and still I believed that serious reactions were rare.
My son on his third vaccine had a very severe reaction - I mean freezing up, pupils enlarging - not breathing
BUt it is more than just one big reaction. For years after - I did not know what I was looking at but my kids were having basically a milder type of Kawasakis - vasculitsis - basically silent but none the less damaging.
With out medical help in knowing what we are witnessing - it basically takes a life time to figure it out.
Does it help to have Age of Autism, Generation Rescue, the internet informing you of things?

Where are the hand flapping adults who wear diapers and have severe bowel issues? Look at my 40 year old son with minimal communications and all the above issues. And he not only has bowel issues but he has paralyzed bowels. I have spent all of my life trying to toilet train him. It's easy to train them to do number one but not number two. And he was BORN with AUTISM...born before he was vaccinated and had autism!

We discovered that MSG was a very reliable trigger for convulsive seizures in my ASD child when weekly visits to the same restaurant eating the same otherwise allergy free foods triggered seizures every time. Investigated and discovered their "house seasoning" was GF but contained lots of MSG. Further research showed lots of problems with glutamates in any form.

Yes, there is a whole bunch of thinking that those night shade families needs to be checked off the list of what should not be eaten.
My daughter did test as a child - allergic to tomatoes. Something I grow in abundance and add to everything.
Right now though -- since she decided to have a fresh DTaP shot the fall of 2012 - it is onions. She can't bear the smell of me cooking them. I have found she can tolerate them if I grow them up/ grind them up outside, and dehydrate them outside -- before cooking them in with food.
Avoiding MSGs is impossible.
It occurs in many foods -it is a natural - just in there to begin with.
Even when I boil down meat and make my own broth-- it is there.
The best I can do; is to just not buy processed foods were they actually put the white powdered MSGs chemical in; adding even more than normal.
My husband craves Chinese food -- I will not allow that.
Romaein Noodles is my son's favorite food -- that would be gluetin and MSGs -- also not allowed in my house.
They also make it darn hard to figure out by looking on the labels for MSGs, since there are a dozen different names for MSGs. I can't remember them all; except there will always be plenty in processed soups you buy in a can. If you go that route just expect it.
Udarel blog is telling us take our pick - it is the roll of the dice of just what you may or may not be allergic too and causing different levels of fuzzy thinking, and health problems.

I try to avoid MSG as an additive, but I've been noticing that some foods like tomatoes have to be minimized for me and my daughter to feel well, so I'm wondering if this is a dietary area our family needs to consider more. It does seem like GFCFSF removes a lot of foods with free glutamate and then it's interesting (or a more pathetic word) to see that when those are ruled out that some other foods become the new cravings.
This site has me thinking food companies want us eating free glutamate as much as possible in complete ignorance. Is this paternalism on steroids, i.e. we can't have any overly paranoid hypochondriac type people avoiding our harmless, but addictive, additives to the detriment of our wonderful product profit margins, or worse?

And there is some discussion, parallel with vaccine research practices, about using obscuring "placebos" in food industry research. Maybe there is some capacity in human nature to "inadvertently" find reasons for practices that also get false results they like, but it is hard to believe that the mega corporation boards and their "scientists" all do not see they are burying evidence of risks.

So, with MSG in vaccines, can the injection of MSG directly sensitize someone to it, or does the sensitization develop through some process that involves the break-down of integrity of membranes, the intestinal health, endocrine function, ... all the stuff autism might involve?

"I want to see the group homes and institutions where the non-verbal, hand-flapping adults in diapers are living."
Anne, if there has been no appreciable increase in ASD incidence over the past two decades, then what would be the expected prevalence of "non-verbal, hand-flapping adults in diapers"? Serious question.

If you read any of the literature of mitochondrial websites it says that MSG is a no - no.
That is a hard one to get out of the diet -- I was cooking away on a low carb diet and found out I had to cook up my own chicken/beef broth as well.
But I could not help noticing that to keep the Hib vaccine in the body long enough for the body to react to it -- they use carbohydrates attached to AL. That was just one formula.
MANY Other formulas of the Hib were also made Attaching the carbohydrates to the diptheria, or the pertussis, or the tetanus antigen along with the Hib antigen.
Gee whiz -- the peds said no more pertussis vaccine for my son as they gave him the Hib -- did they know that the pertussis antigen could be in the Hib? I am sure they did not .

When did this become accepted in the mainstream media?
"She also had digestive issues and constipation - all hallmark signs of autism."
