CHOP Says NO CHOCKS! Philadelphia Hospital Disallows Supplements.

Chocks XBy Eubie Quinoles

CHOP, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, just sent out an announcement via their blog – “Cornerstone, Where Science and Medicine Converge:”

Children’s Hospital First in Nation to Disallow Use of Dietary Supplements

Maybe that blog should be called – Cornerstone, Where CHOP and PHARMA Want Your Dollars!
You can read the entire article but here are some choice tidbits:

“The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has announced that its Formulary – the list of medications approved for use – will no longer include most dietary supplements. The hospital said the action was being taken because the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not routinely review the manufacturing of dietary supplements, and therefore cannot guarantee their safety and effectiveness……The move makes CHOP the first hospital in the United States to discourage patients from using these products without a doctor’s provision as a matter of policy.

Dietary supplements are defined as vitamins, minerals, herbs, botanicals, amino acids, enzymes and animal extracts meant to “supplement” the diet and are not intended to replace a healthy diet or to treat, diagnose, prevent, or cure diseases. Melatonin, Echinacea, chondroitin sulfate, glucosamine, CoEnzyme Q10, milk thistle, and probiotics are some of the most commonly used supplements.”

Translate that to mean, the money made from those sales does not go to the gigantic companies Offit standingwho have a vested interest in medications to CORRECT disease.  Many if not most dietary supplements are bought to both MAINTAIN and CORRECT health.  Unlike pharmaceuticals, one does not need a doctor’s visit or prescription pad to be the decision maker of one’s health but some people are not happy with that and want to keep you, the patient, the consumer, and ultimately, your body, under their thumb. Enter Dr. Paul Offit, well known for his eternal attachment to the big pharmaceutical companies, owning a $1.5 million dollar research chair at Children's Hospital (CHOP), funded by Merck. He holds the patent on an anti-diarrhea vaccine he developed with Merck called Rotateq.  We can add on too, that he is also “Chair of the hospital’s Therapeutic Standards Committee."  Interestingly, Pfizer maker of vaccines and medications has just partnered with CHOP  – “This partnership will bring together the leading science at The  Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia with Pfizer’s global capabilities,” said Jose Carlos Gutierrez-Ramos, Ph.D., senior vice president, Head of Biotherapeutics R&D at Pfizer. “Together, we increase the potential to bring novel medicines to patients.”

NOVEL MEDICINES might then be the real reason that Dr. Offit and his pharma friendlies are now going after supplements.  If people are using supplements and herbs with success, why would they pay 3-5 times more for doctor prescribed and often side effect, black box labeled, drugs?
Because the autism community has been so vocal on vaccine damage and their children, AND because many use supplements with much success for those children, Offit has needed to target autism parents, organizations, and doctors who speak the truth about adverse outcomes from vaccines and positive outcomes from supplements.

Dr. Offit adds supplements into his hit list as they, too are part of medical choice that he wants to end.  It is no secret that he is also out to end vaccine exemptions.  Here you can read along as Dr. Offit's video  attempts to make the case that vaccine exemptions are wrong – “The parents were making this choice because they could.” Emphasize “THEY COULD” and the message is loud and clear:

'Vaccine Exemptions'? Call Them What They Really Are

“The term "personal belief" is also incorrect in that vaccines are not a belief system. Religion is a belief system. Religion is a faith-based system. Science and medicine are evidence-based systems. They are data-based systems, not beliefs. If you want to feel better about vaccine use, I think one needs only to look at the roughly 20,000 studies that have evaluated the safety or efficacy of vaccines, or the hundreds of studies that have looked at what happens when you combine vaccines and give them at the same time to feel confident that, in fact, there are data to support that choice.
The third way one can exempt oneself from vaccines are so-called religious exemptions. Forty-eight states have them. I would argue this also does not make a lot of sense.”

Recently, you can see Offit, CHOP and Pfizer also promoting vaccines here, to download a VACCINE APP: vaccines-on-the-go-what-you-should-know-a-free-mobile-app-for-iphones
“The Vaccine Education Center (VEC) at CHOP is very excited to announce the availability of their newest resource:  “Vaccines on the Go: What You Should Know”

This is a free mobile app for iPhones.  In addition to information about vaccines, the diseases they prevent, and common vaccine safety concerns the app has:

•Games, like hangman, memory and matching
•Links to VEC resources, including the videos, Q&A sheets, and booklets
•Brand new graphics related to contagiousness of each disease and typical disease timelines
•Places for saving notes or questions for the next doctor visit
•An easy way to email the VEC with vaccine-related questions
Learn more about the features of the app, watch a short video featuring Dr. Offit”

Down at the very bottom of the page – “The development of this website was supported by Pfizer, Inc.”

So we see Pfizer, CHOP and Offit in collaboration and then there is still Offit’s close relationship with Merck:

Noted here, in the NEJM, where he seems to be trying his best to dismiss vaccines as the cause of Hannah Poling’s autism:

“Dr. Offit reports being a co-inventor and co-holder of a patent on the rotavirus vaccine RotaTeq, from which he and his institution receive royalties, as well as serving on a scientific advisory board for Merck”

And here, recently on NPR, you can read the transcript of his ramblings on how supplements, like gingko biloba and garlic, are some kind of dangerous poisons, and yet Merck’s Vioxx, a KNOWN killer for thousands of innocent victim, was ignored, if not defended, in his book:

“So for example, in your book, Dr. Offit, you mentioned that Merck took Vioxx off the market when they found that there were cardiovascular side effects.

But there was an article that I read in 2007 in the British Medical Journal that basically talked about that as early as 1997, Merck knew that Vioxx might increase blood clots. But when they applied for its new drug application to the FDA in 1998, they didn't do any studies, and there were nine of them, to evaluate cardiovascular risk. They did short trials. They enrolled people who were at low risk of heart disease, and they didn't even have a standardized procedure to look at cardiovascular outcomes.

Tens of thousands of people died unnecessarily taking Vioxx. And in 2000, the company, Merck, spent more money promoting Vioxx than Pepsi spends. So they knew that there was an increased risk, and they covered it up. And now there are thousands of lawsuits going on.”

In that transcript, there is no rebuttal from Offit about Merck.

Offit seems to be promoting vaccines while he plots the end of vaccine exemptions.  He also uses the same plan in boosting pharmaceuticals as he completely bashes vitamins and supplements. There’s a message in all of this and it’s not that vaccines are great and supplements are bad.  The real message is that Paul Offit seems to be a voice for many in the pharmaceutical business so believing much of what he says and studies that he promotes should not be taken as fact.

From NBC News today:
"When docs make mistakes, should colleagues tell? Yes, report says"

"Medical mistakes are now estimated to kill up to 440,000 people in U.S. hospitals each year, making preventable errors the third leading cause of death in America behind heart disease and cancer.

Wrong doses of drugs, undetected tumors, objects left behind in patients’ bodies: Such errors — and many more — are an “everyday occurrence,” experts say."

440,000 untimely deaths a year, that they are admitting to, which includes only hospital errors, doesn't include vaccine injuries. And what is CHOP focused on? Vitamins. Have to get rid of those dangerous vitamins. And anything other than the practice of their version of allopathic medicine - because it's the only version that's safe. Right.

While CHOP is banning vitamin supplements, Albert Einstein School of Medicine has reported the results of a multi-center study showing that multivitamins significantly improved invasive breast cancer survival:

"Breast Cancer Res Treat. 2013 Oct 9. [Epub ahead of print]
Multivitamin and mineral use and breast cancer mortality in older women with invasive breast cancer in the women's health initiative.

Wassertheil-Smoller S, McGinn AP, Budrys N, Chlebowski R, Ho GY, Johnson KC, Lane DS, Li W, Neuhouser ML, Saquib J, Shikany JM, Song Y, Thomson C.
Department of Epidemiology and Population Health, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, 1300 Morris Park Avenue, Bronx, NY, 10461, USA, [email protected].

Multivitamin use is common in the United States. It is not known whether multivitamins with minerals supplements (MVM) used by women already diagnosed with invasive breast cancer would affect their breast cancer mortality risk. To determine prospectively the effects of MVM use on breast cancer mortality in postmenopausal women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, a prospective cohort study was conducted of 7,728 women aged 50-79 at enrollment in the women's health initiative (WHI) in 40 clinical sites across the United States diagnosed with incident invasive breast cancer during WHI and followed for a mean of 7.1 years after breast cancer diagnosis...In adjusted analyses, breast cancer mortality was 30 % lower in MVM users as compared to non-users (HR = 0.70; 95 % CI 0.55, 0.91)... Postmenopausal women with invasive breast cancer using MVM had lower breast cancer mortality than non-users. The results suggest a possible role for daily MVM use in attenuating breast cancer mortality in women with invasive breast cancer but the findings require confirmation."

Ahhh geeese Paul Offit was probably not invited to yet another Secret meeting on aluminum held by the NIH in Puerto Rico

What year was that -- 2002???

They said they did not have a clue how aluminum worked in synergy with mercury or anything else.
There was only one expert there that had a very good clue what aluminum could do all by itself. . He said it sits around for 8 years and then taken into the brain, and caused problems with the membrane that covered the muscles.

I have a lot of friends from the state of Michigan, born in the 1940s. They all have them selves thyroid problems and their family histories are riddled with goiters, diabetes obesity and insanity, They all lived close all of the Great Lakes - that for some reason have natural high levels of fluoride and all drank for the wells. And what happens when fluoride and aluminum get together in the body - beyond the stomach????

At any rate a lot of fish in the Great Lakes have goiters.
It just seems Paul Offit is just trying to be wrong on everthing -- maybe he has oppositional disorder or something. He is not normal.

Also at CHOP re aluminum:
"The aluminum contained in vaccines is similar to that found in a liter (about 1 quart or 32 fluid ounces) of infant formula. While infants receive about 4.4 milligrams of aluminum in the first six months of life from vaccines, they receive more than that in their diet. Breast-fed infants ingest about 7 milligrams, formula-fed infants ingest about 38 milligrams, and infants who are fed soy formula ingest almost 117 milligrams of aluminum during the same period."

How is any of this a justification for injecting an infant with more? Finding aluminum in different places in and outside of the body doesn't mean that the aluminum belongs there or is harmless. It just means it's there. The difference in aluminum content between human milk, bovine derived and soy formulas is interesting. But CHOP is careful not to address how much aluminum that gets into the GI tract is absorbed and at what rate as compared to aluminum injected directly into a muscle, or several muscles on all limbs, as is the practice when giving multiple vaccines at once. With any pharmaceutical, route of administration and speed of absorption makes all the difference in determining effect and toxicity. It would be hard to believe that CHOP isn't aware of that very basic principle.

Deborah Kahn

This is from the CHOP web-site on aluminum in vaccines (page content approved by Paul Offit): "Aluminum and pregnancy

Aluminum quantities fluctuate naturally during normal cellular activity. It is found in all tissues and is also believed to play an important role in the development of a healthy fetus. This is supported by several findings:

During healthy pregnancies the amount of aluminum in a woman's blood increases.
The amount of aluminum in the blood of the fetus increases between four and a half and six months gestation and again at eight months gestation.
At delivery, the blood of full-term infants contains more aluminum than the mother's, but it decreases shortly after delivery.
The blood of premature infants has more aluminum than that of full-term infants.
The concentrations of aluminum in brain tissue are high during gestation and highest immediately after birth.
The breast milk of moms with premature infants contains more aluminum than that of moms who carried their babies to term."

It used to say that aluminum is considered an essential metal, but that content has been removed. However...I did save a screen shot if anyone is interested. see the section on aluminum and pregnancy and compare to their current page.

Friends, let me tell you in case you dont know already- A doctor is someone who is too busy to have many friends, too busy to study on the internet, too busy to think about his own health much of the time, but he does have to eat, so he sits in that nice clean cafeteria with his buddies and talks about how stupid people are- like the crazy autism parents and people who might give their child supplements instead of getting the cancer treated- so you have to be scared of those crazy supplements. Most of them are too young to know that there was a time when children gettingcancers was rare.
Meanwhile- back home their nanny is driving their child back from the guitar lesson and stopping at McDonalds to buy fries.
I really think that many of them dont know that outside of their hospital, the world is moving on.
My favorite line in the above article was the description of "Where Science and Medicine Converge" . I was very pleased to see that because I had been getting an uncomfortable impression over the last 12 years, that Science and Medicine had long ago stopped converging.

Jeannette Bishop

Re Lisa's comment:

Unfortunately, I'm not sure a growing outpatient program in lieu of McDonald's is a sign of medical progress.

And I wonder what deserves more credit for obesity, McDonald's in the diet or Hg, Al, et al in the healthcare?

How far does this policy go? Will security check everyone's bags as they enter the hospital, and confiscate supplements? (this is a serious question).

Not an MD, that is just deplorable about the pentavalent vaccine!

Years ago, a friend of mine was doing his residency at CHOP. I went to visit him and saw a McDonalds in the lobby. I was appalled. He defended it--I guess the brainwashing had already taken hold. McDonalds, yes! Vitamins, no! And they call it health care--but no health and no care either.

Not an MD

Here's the latest from Kashmir that won't be reported in the US for obvious media control reasons:

I guess Offit is wrong about a baby being able to handle 10,000-- oops!--- make that 100,000 vaccines at once. Apparently, they can't even handle a mere five!

Vitamin C effectively treats pertussis when nothing else will, not even antibiotics; vitamin A prevents complications and deaths from measles. Sambucol (elderberry) and echinacea treat viral illnesses. Homeopathy really works (if you can find the right remedy). Proffit is, as the article observes, just trying to take out the competition, which is safe and beneficial for many reasons, unlike his beloved and lucrative pharma drugs and vaccines. When is he going to retire, by the way, to enjoy his ill-gotten millions?

Cathy; I am so sorry to hear that Ronan's seizures have returned.

However thank you for the website.
I too follow eplipesy news and yes, there is a really growing information about homopathy. But you won't hear it from any neurologists.

Try the mitochondria website -- they have some really good suppelments too-- and those with mitochondrial disorders very often suffer with seizures.

So two websites really for the same thing, same condition.

Really helps. The mitochondrial website also are really big on Ketogenic and low car diets too.

This is a huge fumble on Offit's part. If he thought he had a problem with the educated accepting his authority before, wait until the ramifications of this blunder come back at him.

As I posted yesterday in the "From the Editor" section of AOA , I just watched Gary Null's film, "Silent Epidemic: The Untold Story of Vaccines". It is chock full of solid science, history, law and ethics, told by the experts themselves. All prior efforts at chipping away at the propaganda machine have made great strides, and I feel that this new film will create a tipping point. The science is meticulously laid out by Null and other experts including Drs. Andrew Wakefield, Suzanne Humphrey, Toni Bark, Sherry Tenpenny, Eva Vanamee, Meryl Nass, Scott Ratner, Tetyana Obukhanych, Nancy Banks, Janet Levitan, Lucija Tomljenovic, Diane Harper, attorneys Mary Holland and Alan Phillips and Vera Sharav from the Alliance for Human Research Protection, clips from Congressional hearings including of Mark Blaxill and there are even a few clips of Drs. Nancy, Gupta and Darth Offit making complete fools of themselves. All the brave parents who are shown in the film are an important part of its success, including the very powerful testimony of Isabella Thomas.

With "Bought" coming out in a few months on the heels of Null's film, I think it's only a matter of time before there is a massive, meaningful shift in the tide.

I guess someone must have noticed that the people taking vitamins were better and getting out sooner and not coming back, i.e. were better off than those just getting surgery and meds. Can't have that in the paperwork now, can they? Now they'll be able to compare patients getting meds only to patients getting more meds! Kind of like comparing children with vaccines to children with aluminum from vaccines as a placebo.

I don't know what they'll do when they find out the patients getting lower doses turn out to be better off, too. Will they not allow any meds, then? Or would it turn into a "minimum dose" hospital? Oh wait, minimum dose! That would be homeopathy.

Holy Moly! CHOP wants to go homeopathic! Will they return to the venerable homeopathic roots from which the city's medical industry sprang! Will CHOP become the new Children's Homeopathic Hospital of Philadelphia, brought back from the dead! LOL

“The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has announced that its Formulary – the list of medications approved for use – will no longer include most dietary supplements.

Which ones are the pharmaceutical companies now making at 5X the price?

Let us send this article to the United Mitochondrial Foundation and see if they think Offit is on to something, shall we?

Meanwhile talking heads will rattle off what Offit said -- vitamins are bad

and people will listen to the talking head and trust that the talking heads have done their research.

As in the head of CHOP - Offit voted himself rich.

No--- well darn what is the chances the talking heads will be turned off by the public?

Slim I think -- but people are also beginning to wise up that talking heads are not what they use to be.
No wait a minute -- they were never what they use to be -- I remember the same thing as a little girl listening to them talk about the latest in tobacco science.

Agriculture, Anissa Naouai, Corporate news, GMO, Health, Politics, Protest, Scandal, Science Thousands took to streets across the world’s cities on Saturday to protest the use of GMO products, with Giant Monsanto being the main target. Over 50 countries have been taking part in the march for world food day, and across 47 different US states.

Berlin, Strasbourg, Chicago, London, Sydney and Mumbai are just a few of the 500 cities worldwide involved in the rallies, with each one drawing hundreds.

The demonstrators have been calling for the permanent boycott of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and “other harmful agro-chemicals,” according to March Against Monsanto’s official webpage. Protesters wielded large banners denouncing GMO products, and donned fancy dress: In Washington DC a group dressed as bees to highlight the impact of insecticides on bee populations.

“The hospital said the action was being taken because the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not routinely review the manufacturing of dietary supplements, and therefore cannot guarantee their safety and effectiveness." ????

Meanwhile, Offit has stated that it was a mistake to remove mercury from vaccines. It gave people the idea that it was dangerous.

Speaking of mistakes, may I point out that Eli Lilly invented and ran one idiotic trial on thimerosal eighty years ago on a bunch of people who were dying of meningitis. THAT WAS IT. Eli Lilly said that toxic mercury was fine and no one did any more tests. The FDA allowed its use in vaccines. THE SAME FDA THAT CHOP IS CRITICIZING!

What better proof could there be that Offit et al. have no interest in health care? They promote "sick care." What they should be campaigning for is a healthy lifestyle with a focus on diet and exercise, and yes, supplements. Where would we all be without vaccines and prescription drugs?

Cat Jameson

I was looking up seizure information last night as Ronan's seizures have returned. I found some helpful info at this website and almost fell out of my chair when I scrolled down the page. They list seizure drug therapy but also state that supplements AND homeopathic remedies may help lessen seizure activity. Alternative therapies are also noted to reduce or stop seizures. Holy encouraging!

Jeannette Bishop

"The hospital said the action was being taken because the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not routinely review the manufacturing of dietary supplements, and therefore cannot guarantee their safety and effectiveness..."

First this makes the false assumption that FDA oversight guarantees the safety and efficacy of anything, and really I'm afraid this is just a call for the FDA to have expanded purview and bring the supplement market under the control of the large pharma types who can afford the inefficacious, but costly "approval process" and to get their own revolving through the "health" agencies.

I have to self-censor my comment which would contain swear words.

Notice they say the "Formulary list will no longer include MOST dietary supplements", not "ALL". Where and how do they draw the line on that?

Mainstream doctors are starting to "prescribe" probiotics to be used with the new heavy duty antibiotics.

What about certain conditions that medically require dietary supplementation in the hospital?

Jenny Allan

This nonsense will simply drive patients and their relatives to smuggle vitamins and probiotics into the hospital.

And what is even more amazing are the gullible parents who follow people like Offit and vile hospitals like CHOP and their advice. I read several blogs where the stance is, oh, I tried the diet with my kid for a few months and it didn't work or, we base our decisions on whatever the doctor says and vaccinate fully or the best, the doctor said my kid needs to be on anti anxiety meds so we just do it. God, how stupid can some parents be?

Mercky Business

It sometimes strikes me that CHOP is not a very re-assuring acronym.

Not an MD

I think that Offit is his own worst enemy. When parents stop bringing their children to CHOP due to Offit's obvious conflicts of interest (no probiotics for your child with severe gastrointestinal problems, while my wife is out selling and promoting pro-biotic yogurt, and forced vaccinations for your child with no medical, religious, or philosophical option to object to them, while I made millions of dollars off my rotavirus vaccine that has actually killed some babies?!!!) and and his desire to endorse pharmacological management over any and all nutritional management, then his superiors at CHOP will need to do some serious damage control. CHOP can get all the Pharma funding they want, but at the end of the day, CHOP cannot force parents to take their precious children to their hospital.

This is where they're eventually going to have people start questioning them. I know plenty of people who give every vaccine, but use probiotics, give their kids vitamins, etc. This is a crazy move that makes no sense at all. I hope it doesn't trickle down to other states, hospitals, practices, but I think it's more likely that at least some families are going to look at everything they do more critically.

Can someone still go to CHOPS to secure a two dose flu shot for a six month old infant / with enough mercury to be toxic to a 550 pound horse ???

Victor Pavlovic

That's interesting, I noticed very recently that medical doctors have been prescribing a lot of vitamins lately to people I know and truthfully I was surprised by this.

In many elementary schoolrooms one can find a child who tells tall tales just to find out who's paying attention, via assessing the blowback.

How Offit can discourage nutritional supplements in this day of poor diet, depleted soils and testable physical imbalances is unfathomable.

White Rose

Paul Offit says no to vitamins but yes to this :

Nonoxynol-9, sometimes abbreviated as N-9, is an organic compound that is used as a surfactant. It is a member of the nonoxynol family of nonionic surfactants. N-9 and related compounds are ingredients in various cleaning and cosmetic products. It is widely used in contraceptives for its spermicidal properties

Which is in the flu jab this year . My god the depths of depravity of these people knows no bounds .

Bonnie Offit now makes a living from selling Probiotic Yogurt (with Pretty blue sprinkles on).

if need a laugh today look at the clip art on this page.

It saddens my heart to see that a well-respected hospital would discourage parents from using dietary supplements for their kids when there are tons of studies that proved that by adding supplements, it will the child heal faster and suffer from less side effects from drugs and treatments.

Dan E. Burns

Shoulda seen it coming. The threat represented by this attack will bring more allies into the rebel alliance, while Offit goes off kicking and screaming.

White Rose

No supplements or vitamins but in this years flu jab is this :

β-Propiolactone is an organic compound of the lactone family, with a four-membered ring. It is a clear, colorless liquid with a slightly sweet odor, highly soluble in water and miscible with ethanol, acetone, diethyl ether and chloroform.[1][2] The word propiolactone usually refers to this compound, although it may also refer to α-propiolactone.

β-Propiolactone is "reasonably expected to be a human carcinogen" (IARC, 1999).[1] It was once widely used in the manufacture of acrylic acid and its esters, but its use has been mostly phased out in favor of safer and less expensive alternatives. β-Propiolactone is a disinfectant and has been used to sterilize blood plasma, vaccines, tissue grafts, surgical instruments, and enzymes.[1] The principal current use of propiolactone is an intermediate in the synthesis of other chemical compounds.

β-Propiolactone will slowly react with water and hydrolyse to produce 3-hydroxypropionic acid (hydracryclic acid).
