Sept 6, 2013, The Daily Tar Heel (UNC): UNC scientists publish findings linking autism and environment

New Haven (CT) Register

"Anti-vaccine sentiment is seemingly pervasive in our culture, and at a minimum, ardent and vocal. Somehow I have wound up on an emailing list that drops anti-vaccine commentary into my inbox on a daily basis.

"I can sympathize with the perspectives that underlie vaccine opposition. When bad things, such as autism, happen, everyone wants a reason, and something to blame."

Dr. Katz doesn't give a damn about autism.  He could care less about the suffering of countless children.  I posted comments but all were removed.

Detroit News

"The number of people in Michigan with autism from birth to age 26 receiving special education services soared from 1,203 in 1990 to 15,976 in 2011, according to state data. Nationally, the number of affected children is up 78 percent since 2002, affecting 1 in 88 kids, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"A report this year by the state Department of Community Health called for the creation of a state resource center for adults. Nearly half of parents of autistic individuals ages 13 to 25 said they needed better access to higher education and employment services to supplement programs offered to public schoolchildren, according to the report."

The numbers are numbing but no one can figure out that THERE ARE MORE AND MORE KIDS WITH AUTISM AND THIS IS A PROBLEM! (And if there really were 50,000 people in MI with autism---THERE'D BE SERVICES.

I posted two comments.

Natural News

"If you haven't yet realized the truth about how vaccines contain hidden cancer viruses, prepare yourself to be shocked by the admission you're about to hear. Decades ago, one of the most prominent vaccine scientists in the history of the vaccine industry -- a Merck scientist -- made a recording where he openly admitted that vaccines given to Americans were contaminated with leukemia and cancer viruses.

"In hearing this admission, his colleagues (who are also recorded here) break into laughter and seem to think it's hilarious. They then suggest that because these vaccines are first tested in Russia, their side effects will help the U.S. win the Olympics because the Russian athletes will all be 'loaded down with tumors.'"

This is in keeping with the LA Times story from 2005 about how Maurice Hilleman warned Merck about the high levels of mercury kids were getting in their vaccines.  Maybe the questions we should all be asking are:

What did they know?
When did they know it?
And what did they do to cover it up?

KIMT TV 3 Mason City, IA

"What ever the reason:
"'I have 2 children on the spectrum myself.'
"'I'm actually going in to be a Special Ed teacher right now.'
"'Autism is probably in the last couple of years the fastest growing population of children being diagnosed.'
"People are out in full force to show their support for Autism awareness...."

"Whatever the reason,"...Autism Speaks is never going to do anything about autism. I posted a comment.

New York Times

"For at least a decade, the association has called on lawmakers to change the consent process for the state's immunization registry, ImmTrac, to opt-out from opt-in to encourage retention of more records, reduce operating costs and protect more Texans against preventable diseases.

"But conservative Republicans have consistently rejected the legislation, saying that it does not adequately protect patients' privacy or liberty.

"ImmTrac should remain a consent-based system, said Representative Stephanie Klick, Republican of Fort Worth, who voted against the legislation in this year's session, because the state is handling patients' private medical records. ...

"Russell Jones, chief epidemiologist at the Tarrant County health department, said his first response to reports of a vaccine-preventable disease would be to check ImmTrac to determine whether the person was properly immunized."

Big Brother wants to know who's vaccinated...........

The Daily Tar Heel (UNC)

"Scientists from UNC's School of Medicine have discovered a link between autism and environmental factors - and it all started over a longstanding lunch date."...

"Zylka said topotecan, a drug often used in chemotherapy, can be utilized to inhibit topoisomerase, an enzyme, which in turn limits the expression of certain genes.

"The genes limited by topotecan were particularly long, a characteristic shared by genes linked to autism.

"Zylka said the suppression of these genes by topotecan and other topoisomerase inhibitors, which may be present in the environment, could affect brain development in a manner that results in autism.

"This 'eureka' moment left the researchers with an unforgettable feeling, Philpot said."

I can't think of a more disgusting story than this after a week of horrific autism news. This is pretend science from UNC where we're not even told the autism rate and we have to read, "This is still a condition that we're sorting out all the rules of. We just don't know a ton about it yet." The real message here is that AUTISM IS GENETIC.

The impact of the epidemic is diminished with the trite phrase, "Diagnoses have increased over the past decade."

Meanwhile in the real world, these are stories about adults killing autistic children and trying to kill themselves as well and in Canada, the mother who had to turn her severely autistic son over to the government back in May because she couldn't manage his care, still doesn't have a permanent home for him. I posted five comments.

CTV Ottawa News

"The mother of a man with severe autism says she still feels the guilt of leaving her son, out of desperation, at a government office. But Amanda Telford knows in her heart it was the right thing to do."

From the news video:

"...desperation that many parents of children with autism are feeling."

"Twenty years of caring round the clock for her severely autistic son ..."

"Families have nowhere to turn."

Back in May, I wrote this story about Philippe Telford.

And these severely disabled adults will just keep coming and coming and coming.

No ONE REALLY CARES.

The UNC article isn't about autism or helping prevent or cure autism. It's about how great UNC is for accomplishing so much publishing. If what they found is correct, that pharmaceuticals in the environment are causing a certain percentage of cases of autism, then their next step should be to determine how these chemicals are getting into the environment with the goal of stopping it, as soon as possible. But no, there is no sense of urgency in having found a possible culprit. Instead of following through to eliminate that threat, they're going to leave that one alone and move on to look for other chemicals. They'll do more research, so they can do more publishing, because publishing is what they really get paid for. They don't get paid to actually impact or eradicate disease.

Re: the UNC Study:

Certainly flu vaccines with and without thimerosal should be first on these reseachers' list of drugs to study as they are routinely given to pregnant women and would quite possibly be found to inhibit topoisomerase. While that may only be part of why flu shots are dangerous during pregnancy, it would be highly significant if this proves to be true (and allowed to see the light of day).

Like Anne, I didn't like the tone of this particular article, but I do hope these researchers will follow through on their hopefully-honest quest (in another article they called it a "race") to identify other drugs that inhibit topoisomerase.
