Shame of British Science I
Today in Oxford starts the two day Evidence Live conference sponsored by the British Medical Journal and the Centre for Evidence Based Medicine at which journalist Brian Deer is an undistinguished guest, winding up the event tomorrow afternoon with a “keynote” speech. To mark the occasion Age of Autism is republishing the open letter it published early last month to the centre’s director Dr Carl Heneghan and colleagues, to which there has never been any reply. What Deer’s muck raking techniques and proven deceits have to do with scientific evidence is the sick question which hangs over the entire event.
Dear Dr. Heneghan,
I am writing to voice my objection to Brian Deer’s scheduled appearance March 26 at Oxford University as a keynote speaker in the EvidenceLive Conference, sponsored by the British Medical Journal which is currently being sued for libel over allegations of fraud made by Deer in the BMJ, which have already been substantially proven false in the English High Court through the successful appeal of Prof. John Walker-Smith, senior author and clinician in the controversial Wakefield Lancet paper. (This sponsorship also represents a conflict of interest for the conference.)
Brian Deer is an agenda journalist. He was hired in 2003 by a Sunday Times editor, Paul Nuki, who told him “I need something big” on “MMR” (Nuki’s father was on the Committee on Safety in Medicines when MMR was introduced in the late 1980s, while Nuki junior now heads the National Health Service’s main “information” site, NHS Choices). Sanctioned by his newspaper, Deer then interviewed parents using a false identity , disguising from his subjects his role in an earlier report on successful Irish DPT litigant Margaret Best, in which he claimed “vaccine and drug companies might be welcome scapegoats.”
Contrary to his later conceit that he was somehow taking on “the establishment” Deer obtained unimpeded access to confidential medical and legal documents which he was ill-equipped to interpret (and while the agencies stood by and did nothing). Moreover, the allegations were rapidly taken up by the BBC and an NHS website linked to his. However, any public interest defense effectively collapsed with the exoneration of Prof Walker-Smith, who is widely recognized as the world’s leading expert in pediatric gastroenterology and who had to spend eight years of his retirement fending off incompetent allegations, and undergoing a show trial.
Equally outrageously it was Deer, subsequent to his initial newspaper articles, who covertly submitted three formal complaints to the General Medical Council requesting the prosecution of doctors Walker-Smith, Murch and Wakefield, while coming to a mutually beneficial arrangement with the GMC prosecutor that he not be named, allowing him to continue reporting on a case when he had a personal interest. Deer was the only complainant against the three doctors and his role as complainant was confirmed in a High Court Judgment of Mr Justice Eady.
In the High Court last year, Mr Justice Mitting rejected virtually all Deer’s claims about misconduct in the Wakefield Lancet paper which had been adopted by the GMC prosecutors: the data regarding autism, GI illness, onset of symptoms had not been misreported, the paper correctly described the referral of the children, the paper was not funded by the Legal Aid Board, and there had been no unauthorized or inappropriate investigation of children. All these claims, which had originated in Deer’s reporting were found to be without foundation. Furthermore, Deer’s re-interpretation of the Wakefield paper’s GI findings, and the claim that Wakefield had in some way tampered with them, were denied and disproven in letters to BMJ by both histopathologist co-authors of the paper, neither of whom was on trial at the GMC (here and here.)
Following the exoneration of Dr. Walker-Smith, the University College London (the parent institution to the Royal Free where Dr. Wakefield was employed) stopped its own inquiry into “the Wakefield affair” on advice of the UK Research and Integrity Office. This was despite the BMJ’s plea for the inquiry to continue. UCL stated that such an inquiry would cost a substantial sum of money and would yield nothing conclusive.
Deer’s presentation at the University of Wisconsin in October of last year defamed several researchers including microbiologist Dr. David Lewis, board member of the National Whistleblowers Center, whose investigation turned up a 2004 document showing that the UK Freedom of Information Office provided Deer with copies of necessary ethics approvals to cover the research component of the Lancet study, which he apparently never passed on to the GMC. A letter from the attorney for the National Whistleblower’s Center informing U of W of the defamatory content of Deer’s lecture and other of Mr. Deer’s fabrications and falsehoods can be read here.
Deer’s breaches of ethics and journalistic standards know no bounds. When parents of children in the study became outspoken in their support of Dr. Wakefield, Deer retaliated by publishing children’s identities online after accessing their private medical records. Deer has frequently disparaged autism parents, blaming them for their children’s disorders in the crassest terms: 1) “And they wonder why their children have problems with their brains…The festering nastiness, the creepy repetitiveness, the weasly, deceitful, obsessiveness, all signal pathology to me.” 2) “…a living example of how autistic disorders, and allied conditions, such as pathological demand avoidance syndrome, psychopathy and whathaveyou, are genetic. Certainly, if you are aware of his behaviour, you can see how hard he would run from the idea that it was the expression of his own genetic makeup that lies behind his son’s disorder.”
Brian Deer has played a major role in the corruption of the scientific process. He appears to be no longer employed by any news organization and has not published an article in nearly a year. He has no visible means of support aside from advertising revenues from his website. In 2011, he gave the keynote address at a pharmaceutical conference hosted by a foundation with financial ties to three MMR manufacturers.
An open letter which covers the major issues in the Wakefield controversy can be read here.
Please reconsider Brian Deer’s inclusion in the speaking schedule of the upcoming conference. If these are the means necessary to defend the vaccine program then there is something deeply wrong.
Hi Lisa
For the protean Dr Marcovitch readers might like to revisit my old post:

I lost all respect for the BMJ many years ago when its fondness for forming dubious alliances with very odd people in order to prevent debate on adverse reactions to vaccination became abundantly clear.
After some years of the BMJ publishing my rapid responses in relation to vaccines, autism and cot death, with a focus on Munchausen by Proxy being used as a cover, myself and others began to see a very hostile series of published Rapid Responses which focused on mine. One person, a practising medic, was so disturbed by what he saw written and published by the BMJ, that he said he had never before seen anything like it. One character called himself "Noone". The BMJ happily published his ad hominem attacks. Then another one called himself "Dr Sathi". Then one Sunday, I had a phone call from Jane Smith, Deputy Editor of the BMJ. Surprised by the call, I was even more surprised by what she had to say.
Dr Smith informed me that the BMJ intended to publish a Response from Dr Sathi the next day, that he was suggesting I had conflicts of interest and I would need to respond in detail. I dutifully wrote a lengthy Response totally refuting the false allegation of conflicts of interest, which was subsequently used against me. Dr Sathi, it transpired, was a complete fraud, and the BMJ's legal department removed all his posts.
It was surely impossible for the BMJ to not know Sathi and Noone were frauds, yet they not only published their nasty little posts, but they joined forces with Sathi for certain to make matters worse for me.
Harvey Marcovitch is another BMJ medic who has long supported Roy Meadow and David Southall, who brought MSBP to the UK. Finding Meadow also on the JCVI committees when adverse reactions to vaccination were routinely discussed during the years when the MMR was being introduced, and Marcovitch teaming with that same Deputy Editor who called me about Sathi, whilst cheering on Deer against Andrew Wakefield who, like me, listened to parents who said their chidren had reacted to vaccines, makes the reasons for their support of odd people all very clear.

Brian Deer is - was ? - to promote these ideas : "A failure by authors to disclose and speak to the project’s full methods and data, in recorded editorial interview, or upon request by an appropriate panel, employer, funding body or court, shall be grounds for retraction."
Great opportunity to ask about Gardasil and ...MMR data isn't it ?
Pr Seralini in France, when attacked on his latest paper on GMO, asked the labs to make their data public : he got no answer...I would be utmost interested in knowing Deer's opinion on this affair...
PS: Has Godlee answered Dr. David Lewis "recommandation" yet ?

Is Brian Deer really that credible?
He doesn't know anything about Autism, so when will people "Get It!"

A lot of students Brian Deer speaks to do not know about Professor Walker-Smith and the trial. They feel secure in the knowledge that if he is speaking to them at their university then he must be right as the university supports what he is saying so they are also responsible for the lies told. A lot of the public think Dr. Wakefield is wrong because that is what they have seen in the media and on TV. You just say his name to doctors and it is like a red rag to a bull. They do not know the true extent of the damage done to our children because our sick children have been 'blacklisted' and do not exist to the public. The so called experts feel comfortable with the words 'for the greater good' when looking at vaccines and our children are just collateral damage. The public feels safe listening to Brian Deer because the alternative would be unthinkable. Most of the time on Face Book and web-sites we preach to the converted and cannot get to 'Joe public' This is especially true in the UK. When I talk to people they have no idea while others who do know on the 'other side' are just plain cowards. One sales rep. who took doctors out to dinner told me when they had a lot to drink they talked about the MMR vaccine and admitted they knew there was a problem They said they the had a 'mortgage to pay and had a family. They also said they did not want to be destroyed the way Dr. Wakefield was. We have to 'convert' the media to the lies told and find a good reporter 'with balls' who is not frightened to really investigative the truth.

Lisa,Here's that article..dirty third world health..vs. clean environment..no one cares to look at the difference in access to vaccines and antibiotics..no care is the elephant in the room..no medicine..healthier kids..BUT they want us to believe it has nothing to do with medicine..not even a mention!

Lisa, I was sent that this morning by a "friend" as a , "see this is what's causing the problem". I hate to lose friends over the issue, but it's just another puff piece to take the heat off of this weeks truth. I have dogs, and cats, and access to horses, my kids climb trees, go fishing, get dirty, and someone is telling "me" that my sterile lifestyle is causing illness. It's media manipulation to keep us from considering the garbage in vaccines, the contaminants of dna, animal protein, errant viruses, peanut protein, directly injected . Let's instead follow the words, who paid for this information, motive?

Brian Deer is the reason we have to stop being afraid to say why "vaccines cause autism." If we keep tip-toeing while he walks around with a sledgehammer, we will never prevail. The phrase "environmental causes of autism" is hurting us.

I heard Brian Deer speak at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. Because I already knew the true story regarding Dr. Wakefield, what Mr. Deer had to say, and how he said it, literally sickened me. It sickened me not just because Mr. Deer was lying, but because it was clear that he KNEW he was lying, but the amount of "fame" this controversy is bringing him seems to be narcissisticly satisfying for him. It also sickened me because this was a college campus that he was speaking at, full of young adults who will some day soon be facing the decision of whether or not to vaccinate their children. I pray that these young adults were wise in their discernement of what they heard, and who they heard it from, that day, so that they decide to uncover the truth for themselves regarding this story and vaccines in general before vaccinating their precious babies.

Keep it from the parents: what the government doesn’t tell you about vaccinations
Government agencies are withholding worrying safety information about vaccinations, as secret minutes to key decision-making committee meetings reveal
Government health officials have for 30 years consistently misled parents about the dangers of the childhood vaccination programme by hiding or ignoring studies that show how vaccines like the measles–mumps–rubella (MMR) vaccine could cause permanent injury and even kill.
According to private minutes to meetings of the UK government’s Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), members were made aware of a possible link between the MMR vaccine and autism 10 years before Andrew Wakefield published the controversial paper that eventually resulted in his being struck off the medical register.

I can't but wonder just exactly what members of the audience will be thinking to themselves while they listen to this guy. They surely realise he is just being used as a puppet yet again? They know that Dr Wakefield’s work has been replicated. They know that Prof. John Walker-Smith has been exonerated. They know that families have been compensated for injuries caused by MMR vaccine. Will they applaud Brian Deer? Surely his use to the medical authorities has run its course?

I am posting this here because I don't know where else to post it, and I need to get it out of my system. I just saw a report in the "mainstream" media about researchers trying to figure out why Type 1 diabetes in children is spiraling out of control worldwide. Their latest study shows that the countries with the lowest rates of "death from infectious disease" in children have the highest incidence of Type 1 diabetes in children. Or, said another way, the countries with the highest rates of death from infectious disease have the lowest rates of Type 1 diabetes. Their conclusion? Children need to play in dirt more. Yes, you heard me correctly. They are theorizing that Type 1 diabetes is somehow related to an immune system malfunction that results from children not being exposed to enough bacteria and viruses from playing in dirt -- the kinds of bacteria and viruses found in dirt that apparently lead to death.
The obvious, OBVIOUS, conclusion from this data is that the nations with higher rates of DEATH from infectious disease experience those higher rates of death from infectious disease because they are not being immunized up the WAZOO, and that there is something in the vaccines that is causing an epidemic of TYPE 1 diabetes for populations like ours that ARE being vaccinated up the WAZOO. Alternatively, it is possible that artificially and unnaturally preventing children from contracting even mild childhood viruses like mumps and chicken pox in and of itself leads to an immune system malfunction that can result in Type 1 diabetes.
Right now I'm thinking that the asteroid can't come soon enough. If the "educated" humans among us are actually this stupid, we truly are without hope.
I would love for Age of Autism to do a story on this, if someone has the time.

I have to disagree. Brian Deer is not undistinguished; it is easy enough to distinguish a snake in the grass, especially one so brightly coloured. To say Mr. Deer is undistinguished is rather like saying vaccines have no effect, when they are terribly effective. Terribly.
The Centre for Evidence Based Medicine, however - now there's a misnomer, for if they were truly forging opinions and conclusions from the evidence, their first order of business would be to recommend immediate cessation of all vaccinations.

I wonder if Brian Deer will show a photo of my boys stating that they do not have Autism or bowel disease as he did in the USA? How he thinks he knows better that the consultants who diagnosed the boys is beyond me.I do hope someone will attend the conference and let us all know what his speech will be about.

It will be interesting to see what Brian Deer's 'keynote' speech contains. His US appearances were all about endorsing, (and even embellishing), his BMJ articles, but these were not widely reported within the UK press and media.
Only the first of a series of three Deer BMJ articles collectively entitled 'Secrets of the MMR scare' was reported at all. The Telegraph published a 'verbatim' report on the article with no editorial opinion, and Murdoch's SUN published a vitriolic two page spread, which never appeared on the internet website. It was said at the time, the UK Press Association advised its members against publishing any articles based on Deer's BMJ trilogy, due to the litigious nature of the contents. Paul Offit's book 'Deadly Choices' had to be pulped in the UK and a book launch and signing cancelled, after Offit repeated some of Deer's BMJ outrageous falsehoods. These were challenged by UK lawyer Richard Barr, who was involved with the collective MMR vaccine damages case, which had its legal aid funding withdrawn by the UK Government, via a conflicted judge.
The first of these articles :- "How the case against the MMR vaccine was fixed" and the accompanying editorial "Wakefield’s article linking MMR vaccine and autism was fraudulent", Godlee, Smith & Marcovitch, are presently the subject of an Andrew Wakefield Texas litigation case against Deer, Godlee and the BMJ.
Brian Deer has always taken great care NOT to have his outrageous vitriolic anti Wakefield speeches, recorded or transcripted. One of his Powerpoints, delivered to one of his UK 'Skeptics-in-the-pub' groups was captured on camera by an attendee and posted on the internet!! His disgraceful Wisconsin, La Crosse, University presentation, was captured by myriad smart phones and posted on the internet within hours! This malicious, diatribe was supposed to be a 'prestigious' life sciences lecture. It seems the organisers were under the impression second rate journalist Deer had scientific or medical qualifications!! An avalanche of complaints from students and parents of vaccine damaged children, has hopefully 'put paid' to any more 'prestigious' university invites for Deer in the US.
