Landmark Autism Hearing: "The Troops Have Landed on Normandy Beach"
Thursday's hearing before the House oversight committee (view the autism hearing here) will surely be remembered as a landmark. By the end of the day, the government spokesmen from the NIH and the CDC seemed to be the ones people were looking at funny, while those who raised concerns about autism and vaccines seemed positively mainstream.
It
didn't help that the CDC's Coleen Boyle testified under oath that fraudster Poul Thorsen
had only been involved in a couple of studies with the CDC. Shortly
thereafter, a congressman introduced into evidence a list of more than 20 he
had worked on. I feel like calling the CDC and asking: "Has Ms. Boyle
retained counsel in anticipation of a possible perjury charge?"
The questions were tough and bipartisan -- from Republicans like longtime thimerosal foe Dan Burton (above, with Mark Blaxill) to Chairman Darrell Issa, who said no topic would be out of bounds as the committee continues to probe. Democrat Carolyn Maloney, who has tried to get a vax-unvax study through the House for years, gave 'em the what-for once again. And while I have seen Democratic Congressman Elijah Cummings on TV, I wasn't prepared for the common-sense and deeply troubled approach he brought to the proceedings. The look on his expressive face was priceless. His comment, "There's something wrong with this picture," may go down in history with gems like Jim Carey's "The problem is the problem."
Cummings pointed out the animated, frustrated faces of the audience, many of whom I know quite well. Their collective eye-rolling served as a great backdrop for the in-credible defense of the federal response to autism and vaccine safety worries. And while CDC-types consider individuals as little more than walking anecdoctal evidence, to elected officials they are the voters who put them there and can kick 'em out.
As a general proposition, it is fair to say that the people responsible for running the country do not like hearing that we have double any other nation's vaccine schedule, with a miserable infant mortality rate and an autism epidemic to show for it.
The interagency autism coordination committee (IACC) began to look like the villain it is in this disaster. One congressman even asked for questions that the panel could use if it decided to bring in the IACC for questioning.
It
was just one day, but it had the feel of a new one. Our own Mark Blaxill did a
fabulous job of presenting the key elements in the argument that autism is
environmental, and that mercury and vaccines are so far the most plausible
suspects. Representative Chris Smith of New Jersey asked him to submit evidence
of scientists who have been blackballed or shoved aside for tackling
uncomfortable subjects.
It's been said that the only way to win this battle was to storm the halls of
Congress. We saw a version of that Thursday: "The troops have landed on Normandy Beach," Brooke Potthast e-mailed me afterward, and it seems like the perfect metaphor. "It may take more time, but today was significant and historic."

I don't have a child with autism but was drawn to the C-Span coverage and am glad I watched all 3.5 hours of it. I posted a link on my facebook page, and one of my friends posted a link to this article from 2009 about mercury in high-fructose corn syrup. Obviously you all know much more about all this than I do and are probably already aware of this problem. In case the article interests you, here's the link: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/leslie-hatfield/our-melamine-theres-mercu_b_161334.html I heard food mentioned in vague terms briefly during the hearing, but didn't hear any concerns about HFCS mentioned. My heart goes out to you parents and to all affected by autism. I applaud you and wish you Godspeed in this important and ongoing effort for answers and accountability.

And BTW, Ari, communicative devices are unfortunately not the ultimate answer to this problem. As someone who has worked with Early Intervention and who now works in the educational system where we have acces to these communicative devices (as well as sign language and symbols), there are many children who have very minimal communication, bolt and seem to suffer from many sensory and pain issues. We need to find out why.

Rep Posey: just called Thorsen a "humongous scumbag" -holy crap, LMAO! (love it that he mentioned the research should be re-evaluated in light of this), pressed Boyle on African children- vexed vs unvacced and told her she wasted 2 minutes of his time and pointed out the joke of the most vaccinated and one of the worst in terms of infant/child health! I have a whole new bunch of heroes. Posey is a beauty! This is getting better by the minute. The cat has left the bag!

Thanks for the link, am about one third through the hearing and it is better than the best movie even so far! Boyle and Guttmacher are actually looking really bad and incompetent. Time for those rats to run cause the water is rising! Love what so many of the reps were stating and asking (Meehan, Gosar, Cummings). They really brought their A game and in comparison the CDC, NIH reps looked terrible, completely reflecting their agencies lack of desire to find the true environmental causes. Loved seeing their faces after the U. of C. neuron/mercury video.

Fantastic, watched it all the way from Scotland. The word is "so out there". Good luck everyone in our mission. Please add your voice to followingvaccinations.com if you know your child reacted badly to any vaccine. Over 1,100 parents voices nearly all of us saying the same thing. Dan did an article on the site called 900 voices, this is just the tip of the iceberg and parents are downloading the pdf to send to congress.

Coleen Boyle, CDC’s Director of the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities
Her testimony showed that she is in a job way beyond her ability and understanding of many facets of this tragedy that must be addressed. It was obvious that this woman has trouble holding two thoughts at the same time, in that loose mind. Forget about walking and chewing gum at the same time.
She meets all the criteria of THE PETER PRINCIPLE! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Principle
The Peter Principle is a belief that, in an organization where promotion is based on achievement, success, and merit, that organization's members will eventually be promoted beyond their level of ability. The principle is commonly phrased, "employees tend to rise to their level of incompetence." In more formal parlance, the effect could be stated as: employees tend to be given more authority until they cannot continue to work competently.
Alan Guttmacher IACC NIH Child & Human Development Director Mr G has that rare talent of being able to use many words giving the illusion of answering a question. When I was younger we called people with this magic ability BS’rs.
The above two out of touch incompetents should be fired immediately.
Mark Blaxill Was brilliant! Sure would love to see him get the job to over see this tragedy and it’s solutions. I guarantee all the parts of this puzzle would get addressed!!

"The problem is the problem."
The great public is perhaps coming to see that HHS/CDC/NIH/FDA et al and their pervasive, continuous and egregious autism/"vaccination" LIES are MUCH of the problem. Still despite all their lies if we the people can just get the message to ALL mothers "Do NOT "vaccinate"." things may improve VASTLY and quickly.
Science is fine but we KNOW enough NOW to ACT. "Vaccination" is not the only thing in autism but it may well be the most IMPORTANT thing. IMO "vaccination" just may be a condition usually REQUIRED for autism.

It is absolutely great to read of the growing tide of pressure to get US authorities to acknowledge there is substance in the vacc vs unvacc question and to pile on even more pressure to get this done. I have learned in recent days of three cases in the UK where this information is known to have been collected or where a start was made upon collecting it, only for it to have been stifled at birth. I believe somewhere the information is there to be got and when we do get it, it may figure in a public enquiry where once again the public will learn of how 'the powers that be' redact what the public may know about and so ensure the continuation of abhorrent public policies that have damaged our children and humanity. God speed your work.

It was not the hearing that I wanted.
It was better.
Despite the years of hyper-critical attacks (being called baby killers), years of attacks against researchers, years of science supression, years of media manipulation (including censorship), years of bureaucratic obfuscation and avoidance,it all came down to the fact that Congressional Representatives - from both parties - listen to the families of people with autism.
Because WE are believable. And that would be because we have experienced the regressions of our children.
It is that simple.
And the other side can not control or censor the truth.

I can't praise highly enough Mark Blaxill and the others who made this possible, and I don't mean to be a downer. But has anyone noticed that these hearings were almost entirely ignored by the mainstream media? Instead, the New York Times ran an article on "The Autism Advantage," another happy-news story about matching autistic adults with jobs they can perform. (Which may work for a few high-functioning individuals, but what about all the rest?) I think we're still pinned down on Omaha Beach.
Posted by: JerseyGuy | December 01, 2012 at 09:46 AM
Well done guys! It is very important now to keep the pressure up, this thing is close to the tipping point but could easily slide backwards again if parents don't keep pressuring politicians.
I am 100% with Kristine. IACC and Insel need to be brought forward for questioning. In addition to your questions Kristine.
Exactly what treatments has IACC trialled?
Let Insel answer before the committee whether IACC sticks to better diagnosis' mantra or do they operate from 'autism as epidemic' starting point? If they indeed admit that autism is an epidemic, then why are they wasting millions on genetic studies? Who approves the money for genetic studies? Call them in for questioning etc.
I'd also love him to answer why he has on the panel people who are very openly and vocally AGAINST COMBATING autism...

Media Scholar,
If you turned it off based on Burton's comments I think you need to reconsider and watch it while you can.
-------------------
Americans are too perceptive to fall for a bunch of clowns that don't have the common sense to call the vaccine that took away their child something rightfully evil.
The naive idea that Congress is ignorant and must be informed by a hearing? You gotta come to your senses and realize that it was the United States Congress that used the US Centers for Disease Control as THEIR mule.
The Combating Autism Act was a money-laundering scheme designed and originating from Congress to pay the price to wipe out legal claims against the drug giants via the US CDC.
Congress wrote our children off in the late 1980s when they passed the Vaccine Injury Compensation Act. They will NEVER reverse their position. They will NEVER restore our children's civil rights.
The only way to change is to tell the truth and that includes telling Americans we have to stop vaccinating for ever, Amen.

Dan said "One congressman even asked for questions that the panel could use if it decided to bring in the IACC for questioning."
I really feel this is the next logical step for this committee if they truly want to pursue this. Bring the IACC up, put Insel up there to endure the questioning. I just want them to ask specifics about new treatments that have been uncovered in his tenure at the IACC. I want them to ask him about how he is COMBATING autism. And I want someone to point out that congress specifically asked for more studies on vaccine autism connection and how has the IACC directed CAA funding toward this end. How can Insel answer that?

Loved it! I was tempted to turn it off until I saw Katie Wright 's reactions to Colleen Boyle. Priceless! And I'm so glad I watched both panels...amazing! There have been steps along the way where I feel hope in this fight; the beginnings of Autism Speaks and the Wrights, Generation Rescue, Jenny McCarthy, the books Evidence of Harm and Age of Autism are a few I can think of now. This is one of those times. A great day for people with autism and their families. Thank you to everyone there!

Thank you everyone who spoke the truth during this hearing. It was incredibly satisfying to hear so many great points, and it was enjoyable to watch Boyle have absolutely no logical response to any posed question. The sound of her voice alone was enough on its own to make me cringe, then add the bullshit spilling out with every word. What an incredible day, thank you all again.

Perhaps our greatest public health emergency? I have yet to see any mention of this critical Congressional hearing in the national media. Indicates just how far we will have to go to throw out the rascals at HHS, CDC, NIH, and IACC that have been so protected by this administration.
Just follow the money and campaign contributions if you want to know why nothing is getting done on autism. Some day enough of us will realize that huge multi-industry complex (Big Pharma, Big Ag, Chemical, Medical,Insurance)is making serious money by keeping us sick, obese and uninformed. Scary increases in the rates of autism and autoimmune disorders are but a canary in the coal mine. So the tactics of the enemy are to purvey misinformation, junk science paid for by these industries, and smoke screens like spending millions on the illusive genetic antecedents of autism rather than likely environmental causes. The science has become corrupt. Thanks to Mark Blaxill and others who are exposing this scam for what it is.
Posted by: Barry | November 30, 2012 at 06:15 PM
Actually feeling hopeful once again that the tide is turning, Congress is finally "getting it" and science may actually look at what's really causing Autism. It was blatantly obvious to all in the hearing that after 15 years and millions of dollars the CDC and NIH have done virtually nothing for Autism except attempt to count the number of people who have it. My God - they didn't sound any different than they did at the hearings in 2000! Thank you to all who made this possible!!! And Mark Blaxill - you were awesome!!! We must all keep pushing forward until the truth is known.

Thank you to those who have been requesting and uncovering malfeasance and presenting it to our congressmen who could and did ask the tough questions yesterday, we would not have been able to have this hearing in the Oversight Committee because they deal with malfeasance in government not health. You are heroes.

Why haven't we asked for a federal audit of their inside memos, papers, financial disclosures and ties to vaccination companies ie conflicts of interests? Is it that hard for congress to ask for them, especially when they are funded by them? And, why hasn't anyone asked WHY we fund such agencies when they clearly a), haven't cured or alleviated ANY diseases or conditions, and b), they have conflicts of interests riddled throughout, especially when their employees can march across the street and get high paying pharma jobs? Just saying? Shouldn't we ask congress why they continually fund genetic studies, when in their constant search, the genes for autism are either elusive, combined with many other disease conditions, and, clearly you can't have an epidemic of genetics changing this fast? The same should be done for GMO companies, gluten laced sugar laced food companies, companies that pollute, fluoride advocates, dental amalgams, and birthing practices known to contribute to autism? Why aren't we also asking disclosures of ties to pharma from media corporations who tout lies that the "frenzy" of parents saying autism is caused by vaccines is false? Who is the perpetrator of such continual deceptions? And lastly, lets ask congresspeople who they are often funded by and why they are told to not break the silence?

So, since I have been writing them now for the past 20 years (both have been there that long too) maybe I should try your approach Geoffrey Dubrowsky and send them some books.

Media Scholar,
If you turned it off based on Burton's comments I think you need to reconsider and watch it while you can.
I sat up until midnight to watch it a SECOND TIME. To me it was like watching my Green Bay Packers winning the Super Bowl! My heart was racing and my wife and I were laughing so hard at Katie and the gang with their facial responses - at one point Rep Cummings actually told Boyle from the CDC "too bad you can't see the faces of the people behind you..." - Friggin hillarious!
Seriously, from the moment you turned it off until the very end it was smashmouth football and the CDC, FDA, NIH and HHS were losers - bigtime.

Sarah,
Homeland Security protects manufacturers of thimerisol from lawsuits and also stockpiles vaccines that must be preserved in thimerisol because of the number of people they are stockpiling for during a state of emergency.

Phone number to CDC:
404-639-3311 Ask for Dr Frieden. Aak him why Dr. Boyle lied nder oath, and what is her involvement in the Thorsen studies.
I have spent this morning calling each representative (my favorite: Rep Posey of the "lying scumbag" comment) explaining to them that I appreciate their questions and I will be sending money to them for re-election.
Rep Maloney asked about vax/unvax studies and got a non answer.
These hearings are significant, we must all act now to keep the attention on. Money gets their attention. Tell them you will contribute because of what you saw and you want them to keep the pressure on.

The spin meisters from the NIH and CDC looked and sounded so dishonest, often repeating the same vague talking points to several questions in a row. It became obvious that they had no interest in doing anything except stalling and covering up for years to come by pointing to studies with no end dates.
When they were asked for a yes or no answer to a question they refused to answer but kept reciting gibberish in hopes of running out the clock since the folks asking the questions were limited to 5 minute time slots.
The CDC and NIH actually said they do not even look at vaccine causation as a possible factor because the body of evidence has ruled out vaccines as a cause!!!!!!!!!!
I recommend you watch the video on C-Span while it is available since it would not surprise me if it gets pulled since it is so damaging to the CDC and NIH.

Input into any strategic plan for combatting autism should involve key stakeholders in the autism community but also include representatives from US Office of Homeland Security, DOJ, FDA, EPA, HHS, NIEHS. Why DOJ and Homeland Security?? Because the autism crisis and coverup by federal agencies long ago crossed the line into a criminal activity that threatens our national security. Thanks to the denialist at the CDC, we have a generation of children many of whom will never be able to defend our country, live independently or contribute to society and the cost for care of these injured children will be staggering.

We are so appreciative of absolutely everyone's efforts both within and outside our community! First and foremost, we are grateful for the courage of those we love who fight, living with autism every single day of their lives, living it to the the best of their abilities, a life full of strife!
From the parent who is only able to be supportive in spirit due to the demands autism places on the them, to the orgs and our fearless leaders as well as to those who have a kind supportive word here and there for us and our loved ones with autism, we are grateful to you. Additionally, we very much appreciate our country's leaders willing to hear our concerns and lend a hand. We are eternally grateful for the therapists, educators and the like who work with our loved ones with autism; we APPRECIATE EACH and EVERYONE of YOU!! THANK YOU!!
Last but not least, to our loved ones on the spectrum, YOU, ABOVE ALL OTHERS ARE OUR PERSONAL HEROES!! We love, support and respect you for your daily challenges and your courage to fight to overcome!! You are in our every thought and prayer. To the best of our ability, we fight WITH YOU!
Our appreciation runs so deep for so many, it causes my heart to actually ache and swell with pride! TOGETHER WE WILL WIN!!

I think congress is finally seeing the truth.
As Bob Dylan said "The times they are achangin'"...
Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.
Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.
Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.
Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.
The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.

Thanks to all the wonderful advocates we have for our children who represent us so well. I see faces and names of people in all these posts and in yesterday's updates from AoA, the Canary Oarty, Generation Rescue - who's children must be much younger than my own son. It makes me sad to see all the people who have joined us in our war on autism. I also see the same dedicated advocates who have been standing up for our kids for years. Many thanks to Mark Blaxill for his intelligent passionate testimony.
I thank each and every one of you for your time and efforts. I remember watching those hearings Rep. Burton held ten years ago and feeling hopeful. I have lost that hope over the years for all the stupid crap and political maneuvering that has prevented real progress in identifying environmental causes to this epidemic of autism and illness in our kids. Yesterday's events has brought back my hope. I just want to see future generations spared. Don't we all?
Feeling very grateful today. Thank you all.

Dan / John ,
We all know - no matter what our background - the world we live in is a sham - in which we are all obliged - to take our allotted part - however much we resent it in order to get by .
It is too easy for the - journalists and scientists - forgetting that - isolation / alienation / infanticide - are all too common in the autistic community to sneer at - Age of Autism - and the all too often - uninformed concerns / absurd beliefs - of the parents it supports and allows a voice .
However the bottom line is that the autistic community has received and expects nothing but contempt from the - scientists / politicians / journalists - for their plight and have in reality given up expecting anything from society at large other than the bare minimum .
However the autistic community - despite everything - as sites such as - Age of Autism - illustrate does its best to look after one another and prevent others suffering the same fate .
As for - society at large - and - that other matter - c'est la vie citizens .

I've never seen anything like it. There's no turning back, as the cat's outa the bag. Too many in high places have glimpsed the tip of this enormous iceberg. Change is now inevitable, and it only has one direction to go. Thank you, each and every one for your tenacity.
