Win Dr. Martha Herbert's The Autism Revolution Whole Body Strategies for Making Life All It Can Be
We have contests frequently at Age of Autism. But this one is special. Dr. Martha Herbert, MD, who is an assistant professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School and a pediatric neurologist at Massachusetts General Hospital has kindly given us a signed copy of her book The Autism Revolution Whole Body Strategies For Making Life all it Can Be. Please leave a comment to enter.
After years of treating patients and analyzing scientific data, prominent Harvard Medical School researcher and clinician Dr. Martha Herbert offers a revolutionary new view of autism. Autism is not hardwired into a child’s genes and destined to remain fixed forever, as parents are often told. Instead, Dr. Herbert approaches autism as a collection of challenges, many of which can be tackled in a deliberate and methodical way. Her recommendations aim to provide optimal nutrition, reduce toxic exposures, shore up the immune system, reduce stress, and open the door to learning and creativity—all by understanding and truly meeting your child’s needs.
Drawing from the newest research, technologies, and insights, as well as inspiring case studies of both children and adults, Dr. Herbert guides you through small changes that can create a substantial difference in your loved one with autism. A paradigm-changing book that offers hope and healing for the millions of people with autism in their lives, The Autism Revolution shows that there’s plenty you can do every day to reduce vulnerability, feel better and live life to its fullest.
Read the Table of Contents and Introduction.
Read Preventing and Dealing with Autism Problem Behaviors.
The treatment category is sponsored by Lee Silsby, the leader in quality compounded medications for autism.
I will get to hear Dr Herbert speak this Friday and am looking forward to it. I am a social worker . If I win,the book would get well used and shared. Thanks.

My family has been in Recycling for (4) Generations. In the last 30 Years I have witnessed the Recycling of PE Bottles. In the Markets you have (3) to (5) Isles of PE Bottled Products. What happens when the Liquids in the bottles become heated up and the breaking down to of the PE or Polyethelene. I feel this could be one of the Biggest Linkages to Autism going up 1,200% in the last 20 years.

Dr. Herbert's otherwise valuable book is marred by her whole-hearted support for vaccinations and her skepticism about relatively harmless yet valuable treatments such as high-dose B6/magnesium,chelation and hyperbaric oxygen. I suppose these are the bits of incense she must burn to the Pharma gods to keep her in good standing with her colleagues.

Ok, don't need to win this book--please give it to someone who truly needs it. I just went on Amazon and bought a copy for myself and my friend. I encourage all who can afford this book to buy it....Isn't that how books make the best-seller list? And if it does, then more people will read it just because there it is!!! Let's blow up this awareness!!!!!!

My autistic grandson crawled late, walked late and talked late. 12 doctors and therapists who evaluated him said that he had 'full-blown' autism and he might not ever talk. Well.....he turned 4 on August 1, and with the help of my daughter and her wonderful husband, therapists and the Joshua School in Denver, this child has made astonishing strides. He even knows what a dodecagon* is. So, yes, there is progress to be made, every day.
We would love to have the book. Thank you.
*(a dodecagon is a 12-sided figure.)

Hey you never know!
I may win I may not, just like in kids with autism, when you see changes, then regression, you observe wonder that cause that progress then wonder what caused the regression.
I would like to have the book.

PURPLE ELEPHANT!!! Just kidding. I thought that would grab someone's attention :) I would love to have this book. We are doing all sort of interventions for my 12 year old son with autism. He has GI issues, self biting, bed wetting, soiling, etc. but he is the most wonderful person I know. I would love to see what Dr. Herbert recommendations are.

Over the past 9 years we've tried several diets, therapies, bio-medical and cognitive interventions for our 12-year old and have seen modest improvement. Yet not enough for her to become even remotely independent when she becomes of age. Would love to read this book to perhaps get a broader perspective.

It seems that this book would be a valueable guide to applying recent scientific findings to our family's recovery efforts on behalf of my grandson. Pass it on to a pediatrician!
Thank you for your work, Dr. Hebert.

Is she one of them? A highly respected western medicine doc that gets autism and the challenges for the family-- and can use the correct verbage to convince these docs we all take our children to, to run the tests .. and not look at us like we are alien parents??? ... if so, I'd like to read her book and try once again to get somewhere with a doctor to help my son get better...

Wow-this book looks awesome...if only I could win one?
it would help unravel the mystery of my aspie..
we could really use the help right now...

I failed to buy a copy at Autism One, but would like to read on Martha's further thoughts. I'm a big Martha fan-but then again- who can resist her down-to-earth personality?
Just a note for those who aren't winners and can't afford to buy every new autism book that comes along- I highly reccommend learning how to request books from your local library system. I've had good success getting my library to order books. If several parents in your area all request the same books, they will usually order them for their circulation.
I have found great success by explaining that autism research is moving very fast, new information on treatments is coming out and changing just about every month, and their stock needs updated and replenished constantly.

I have heard Dr Herbert speak at two different Autism conferences and I believe that she is brilliant. I was especially impressed with her willingness to think outside the box, which seems to be a rarity in the medical world! I have a 5 yr. old son with Autism. I have wanted to read this book since before it came out--really hope to win it!!

We participated in one of her studies last summer at Mass General - her team was so wonderful with my daughter and she made a special point of scheduling a hour of her time to examine my daughter and speak with us - she is a wonderful supporter of our community. Would love a chance at receiving this book.

Re: "Dr. Martha Herbert, MD, who is an assistant professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School and a pediatric neurologist at Massachusetts General Hospital"
GOD BLESS THIS AMAZING MEDICALLY TRAINED DOCTOR!!! It is inspiring to see more and more medically trained physicians studying and incorporating the field of alternative medicine.
I wonder what Dr. Herbert thinks about Hyperbaric Oxygen or if she ever recommends it. It is so disheartening to know about this option for autism therapy and yet, like our own family, most people cannot afford the cost of this. Jenny McCarthy has stated that many people have continually approached her "singing the praises" of HBOT and sharing thier experiences of thier childrens further recovery.

I bought this book as an audio book and have literally listened to it 5 times through. Its amazing and so refreshing. My DAN doctor pulled it out during my first visit, and suggested sending a copy to my "old school" pediatrician who doesn't believe in all this recovery "hooey". It truly is revolutionary information, that is, coming from a doctor, and from Harvard. I am a big fan of Dr. Herbert, she has guts enough to admit that what she was taught in medical school was only part of the equation, and to give biomedical treatments, and parents, the respect and forum they deserve. This book makes my top 5 autism reads, I highly recommend it.

I am a mother of 5 children. My oldest (12) and youngest (2) both have autism. After years of biomedical treatment, my oldest has made phenomenal gains. Now, starting again with my 2 year old, I am very much interested in Martha Hubert's book. It makes total sense to me. I have heard her speak at an autism conference and she was phenomenal!!!

And I am the wife. I can't wait to read dr. Hebert's views, recommendations through the stories of these children she has treated. I don't know if there is a category on her book for the "non-responder, tuff nut and yet, hopeful and fighting kid", but that is my kid. That is us. Somewhere in her introduction, she briefly describes those that were functioning "low enough on the spectrum" and now doing well. We are at a point where inspiring stories like that can help us to move forward. I want to know more about her "whole body approach" as she describes it in the intro as I believe there are many pieces to this very complicated puzzle.

This is a good book, a must-read. I actually started reading this since last week, since I also have a nephew who has autism. Reading the first part of it is already interesting. I'm learning a lot from it. So I highly recommend everyone to check and read this book.
