Hacked Off Boss, Martin Moore, Sat on UK Government Panel with Editor who Hired Brian Deer
Martin Moore (left), the unresponsive boss of the organisation ostensibly set up to support members of the public who have fallen victim of the unethical journalistic practices of the Murdoch media empire in the UK (See Age of Autism "Write to Hacked Off.." HERE), sat on a panel set up by the UK’s Department for Business to plan the future of science journalism in Britain producing a report ‘Science and the Media: Securing a Future’. Moore has repeatedly refused to be drawn on a catalogue of apparent abuses in Deer’s MMR investigation, including Deer’s assertion that a Sunday Times news editor, Paul Nuki (right), had hired him to find “something big” on “MMR” (which sounds suspiciously like a fishing expedition). It now turns out that Nuki and Moore sat on the same government committee in 2009-10 to determine the future of British science journalism under the chairmanship of Fiona Fox. Fox, the head of Science Media Centre, has also recently given evidence regarding the MMR to Leveson Inquiry on ethics in British journalism.
Meanwhile, Moore’s organisation Hacked Off effectively sits as unofficial guard dog to the government appointed Leveson Inquiry, which has now heard a succession of witnesses including Fox condemn as irresponsible earlier media concerns about the safety of MMR, but has so far failed to hear witness statements based any of the submissions about Deer’s investigation.
To date Moore and Hacked Off have ignored documented concerns that:-
- Deer was hired by the Sunday Times (and Nuki) to conduct a fishing expedition over MMR
- Deer used a false identity in the course of the investigation
- Deer accessed without consent confidential medical records and legal documents
- Deer had a secret arrangement with the General Medical Council that he not be named as complainant against Andrew Wakefield and colleagues, enabling him to continue reporting despite his interest in the outcome of the hearing
- Hacked Off advisor, Liberal-Democrat politician Dr Evan Harris, collaborated closely with Deer on his investigation
- Deer’s allegations were given fresh impetus in 2009 with the appointment of Sunday Times proprietor James Murdoch to the board of MMR manufacturer GSK
All this raises the issue of whether media standards are really the agenda of Hacked Off and its parent organisation, Media Standards Trust, or rather controlling on behalf of government and industry which media attacks on citizens get public attention and which do not. Moore and Media Standards Trust have collaborated with Fiona Fox’s Science Media Centre over a number of years, including over Fox’s cover up of autism figures in 2007 (Autism: the 64 billion dollar a year question for Simon Baron-Cohen, Ben Goldacre, Fiona Fox and Autism Speaks UK, The false scare about autism and the MMR jab, Data and News Sourcing Workshops) Science Media Centre are heavily funded by industry, including the three MMR manufacturers involved in the UK litigation: Media Standard Trust are funded by bio-industry orientated foundations including Gatsby and Nuffield, as well as by the Pearson and Scott foundations which are connected to the Financial Times and the Guardian newspaper. Even more troubling is the fact that the UK’s Department for Business thinks that it is its job to control the reporting of science in the media and hands the job over to the industry press officer.
Presently, the lead non-executive board member of the Department of Business is the recently knighted Sir Andrew Witty, CEO of GlaxoSmithKline.

Dear Sirs,
I have deep concerns as detailed in Mr John Stone`s article below.Could you please consider the points raised by Mr Stone which is a mirror copy of my concerns as well.I have written to Hacked Off several times and had no reply. This article explains it is no wonder that I have not received a reply.
To date Moore and Hacked Off have ignored documented concerns that:-
Deer was hired by the Sunday Times (and Nuki) to conduct a fishing expedition over MMR
Deer used a false identity in the course of the investigation
Deer accessed without consent confidential medical records and legal documents
Deer had a secret arrangement with the General Medical Council that he not be named as complainant against Andrew Wakefield and colleagues, enabling him to continue reporting despite his interest in the outcome of the hearing
Hacked Off advisor, Liberal-Democrat politician Dr Evan Harris, collaborated closely with Deer on his investigation
Deer’s allegations were given fresh impetus in 2009 with the appointment of Sunday Times proprietor James Murdoch to the board of MMR manufacturer GSK

Thanks Ginger. I'll take that as a compliment.
My guess is it is less to do with being British than the cancer attacking our institutions both nationally and globally. One problem I did not mention because it would have made the piece over-complicated was that in late 2009 with Labour still in office the decision was taken to finally hand over under the direction of Lord Mandelson (aka The Prince of Darkness) the responsibility for university education from the Department of Education to the Department for Business. Such a minor matter was of course barely reported at the time and almost nobody said anything, although I was one of the few exceptions, and even had a letter prominently printed in the Times Literary Supplement. I also had an email from an assistant to the shadow Conservative spokesman for education assuring me that they were opposed to the change (which was mildly encouraging since there had to be a General Election by May 2010).
It was also not much of a surprise when a few months later that not only did the new government not honour this undertaking but removed all state support for universities placing them entirely at the disposal of private sponsorship. So, in effect even the possibility of any kind of academic independence has virtually evaporated in the past two and half years without the institutional changes ever receiving the remotest public attention (you might think the only things that matter are reality game shows). Our academic institutions are now entirely beholden to big business and to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (to give it its full title) with Sir Andrew Witty (CEO GlaxoSmihKline) the lead non-executive board member.
But, of course, your comments were tongue-in-cheek and this is not just a British disease. There are few brakes left anywhere against the basic principle that ruthless greed is the only good and must be encouraged in all its forms.

Cover ups of cover ups that covered up older cover ups to cover up the cover up that covered up that first cover up of that thing that small group of people never should have done in the first place.
But why take responsibility for a small, correctable problem, when you can just get hundreds (thousands?) involved in cover up after cover up until the entire place is corrupted to the bone! Drunks do love to pull people into their benders, and the corrupt love to pull everyone into their crime spree.
I have lost track of all this garbage and just decided not to trust anyone with a British accent with out giving them a polygraph first. Except for John Stone.
And, of course, The Doctor.

Glax,
"A snake shedding its skin"? Perfect. And the serpent said, "Die? You will not die. Eat this fruit and live forever!"

I wonder if James Murdoch and Crispin Davis could be said to have jumped ship. Naturally, Murdoch was expected to do the decent thing but Sir Crispin was a bonus -in theory he doesn't go till January next year but an optimistic reading is that GSK are covering themselves in case things go wrong in the interim. It's a bit like a snake shedding its skin, if that is not being unfair to snakes.

Imagine Dr Fiona Godlee of the BMJ relying on information from a journalist Brian Deer to prove herself. He is no medical expert and has a vendetta against Dr Wakefield. Notice how James Murdock and Crispin Davis have jumped ship.

I suggest the clue is that the British political and scientific establishment, unable to answer the questions posed by Andrew Wakefield in any legitimate way needed a paranoid fantasist to construct a case, which they could then all hide behind.

Thank you for keeping us up to date on this hot mess. What you do is incredible, and exposing the truth is the only way to keep our society safe from the insidious corporate greed pervading medicine today.

John, I can't tell you exactly how much I appreciate the fact that you keep us all "posted" on this matter. What a tangled web the weave.
Thank you!

All I can say is kudos to John on an excellent expose'. Is there a book coming, or are the "powers that be" beholden to larger powers?
I would love to see this one on 60 Minutes, but then again Pharma sponsors the show.

Hi Jake,
I am not sure that the Committee of Safety in Medicines which advised the UK licensing authority (at the time the MCA) on which Prof Nuki sat c.1988, would have had anything to do with the indemnity, which was signed on behalf of the National Health Service. Perhaps it was the then recently appointed Secretary of State for Health, Ken Clarke, who took the final decision and is now by chance head of the judiciary in England and Wales, Justice Minister and Lord Chancellor, having failed in his bid to become leader of the Conservative Party in 2005 (in which he was supported by the Chairman of GSK, Sir Christopher Gent).

Brilliant John. What a task you have undertaken. It's frightening to see how interconnected all these people are. A real tangled web. It makes it all the more difficult to tease them apart. Like following Ariadne's thread. I wonder where it will lead? Here's hoping you can metaphorically kill the minotaur!

Yes, and before "Lewis" there was "Morse", one of the classic TV serials which ran from 1986-2001. And actually if you revisit the series you can see this all happening with a few extra bodies attached. Arrogant academics, corridors of power, industrial strings.
Of course, that's Oxford - Dr Moore is from Cambridge!

What a twisting trail, a real whodunit. This unraveling plot brings to mind Masterpiece Theater’s “Inspector Lewis” series, with its unexpected associations, intrigues, and liaisons. Bodies turning up everywhere. But the core mystery to me is still this: why would the medical establishment in the UK line up behind Deer, a mediocre unhinged journalist with no medical credentials? Or did I miss a clue.

John, you are amazing the way you uncover all this corruption and try to hold those responsible accountable. It is like waiting for the next installment of an exciting John Grisham novel. What a mammouth task you have taken on. Your readers and parents of children damaged by vaccines (and those who potentially could be)owe you and all at AOA a great debt. It takes so much time, energy and financial resources to look after children with a disability. Many carers just can't muster up the energy to take on another challenge, especially one as big as greedy multinational pharmaceuticals and corrupt government employees. Many, thanks once again.

(I sent the three emails/letters you so eloquently drafted on AOA to the Moore, Thias and Cathart about complaints regarding Harris and Deer. I am still waiting for a response like the rest of us I am sure.)

Corruption runs deep: I always felt that Brian Cathcart, professor of journalism at Kingston University in London, was a cut above the rest. What a disappointment! In fact, I feel rather hacked off about the matter.

The Media Standards Trust and the Science Media Centre are both sinister organisations, financed by corporate vested interests and 100% devoted to political and corporate agendas. Fiona Fox, CEO of the SMC has NO scientific or medical qualifications, and has far left affiliations. Much of the press and media suppression and manipulation masterminded by the SMC reflects Ms Fox's determined Marxist, anti democracy, agenda:-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiona_Fox_(UK_press_officer)
From above:-
"Fiona Fox (born 1964) is a British writer. She is the director of the Science Media Centre and a former leading member of the Revolutionary Communist Party.
The credibility of the Science Media Centre has been questioned,[2] mainly on the basis of the political affiliations of Fiona Fox, and in particular Fox's links to the Living Marxism group."
AoA readers interested can read the copious verbiage in her blogspot, which well reflects her 'modus operandii', replacing truth and facts with blatant propaganda. She says she 'loves' Brian Deer. With a bit of luck the two of them will elope, to nothern Siberia-or ANYWHERE!!:-
http://fionafox.blogspot.com/
The following is an example of Fiona's malign influence over what we the public, get told in the media. This article refers to last year's catastrophic tsunami in Japan following an earthquake:-
http://www.bbc.co.uk/journalism/blog/2011/03/british-media-went-into-meltdo.shtml
From above:-
"Media meltdown over nuclear threat
A week last Friday, in response to the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, the Science Media Centre dropped every other story and started issuing comments from experts on earthquakes and tsunamis, warning them to prepare for days of back-to-back interviews. We forewarned our public health experts that the media interest would soon turn to them and planned to line up our trauma experts and psychologists.
Then there were explosions at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Suddenly, this was the only game in town as far as the media was concerned.
As we obligingly stood down our tsunami experts to find nuclear scientists, we started to gather comments and access the combined expertise of many scientists and engineers who have decades of experience of nuclear accidents, detailed knowledge of how these plants work and an understanding of what radiation can do to the human body and surrounding environment. As with all good scientists and academics, there were differences of emphasis and differences of opinion, but I think a fair reading of the consensus would go something like this:
- This was a very, very serious situation
- The Japanese operators appeared to have done a tremendous job in controlling it
- It was not another Chernobyl
- Almost everything reported to have happened was what experts would have expected to happen in a 40-year-old plant faced with the combined impacts of the earthquake and tsunami
- The Japanese authorities did everything right in relation to protecting the local population, setting the exclusion zone, handing out iodine tablets etc.
- The health risks to anyone in Tokyo from a radiation leak at the plant in Fukushima are really very small indeed.
So why did the best estimates of the best experts give way to another narrative? Why did so many responsible broadcasters and editors not allow the facts to get in the way of a good story? Why did almost every section of our media lead daily reports with 'another Chernobyl' or the coming apocalypse, when none of Britain's leading scientists or the Chief Scientific Adviser were in any way confirming that assessment?"
Almost EVERY LINE of this misleading and dismissive public appeasement was factually WRONG!! The idea that what happened at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power was "what experts would have expected to happen in a 40-year-old plant faced with the combined impacts of the earthquake and tsunami" is a PERFECT example of Fox tripping up over her own invective. If the 'experts' KNEW in advance this catastrophe could happen they are culpable in respect of it ACTUALLY happening. We are all told nuclear power stations are SAFE SAFE SAFE, never mind that radioactivity persists for hundreds of thousands of years.
