Acne is a Disease: Don't Worry A Vaccine is Under Development

Sanofi is working on a vaccine for acne. Get it? From Fierce Biotech:

Lyon, France - September 21, 2011 - Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of Sanofi (EURONEXT: SAN and NYSE: SNY), announced today a research and development collaboration with the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego) on an immunological approach to acne prevention and treatment targeting the specific neutralization of Propionibacterium acnes factors in inflammation.

Acne vulgaris (acne) is one of the most common skin diseases worldwide and affects more than 50 million people in the United States alone.1 The disease has multiple, complex factors and is associated in particular with the Gram-positive anaerobic bacterium P. acnes that is a normal member of the human skin microflora.2 Current treatment of mild forms of acne involves killing P. acnes with bactericidal agents such as benzoyl peroxide and oral or topical antibiotics, all of which indiscriminately kill many bacterial species and disrupt the normal balance of the skin microflora.3 Long-term use of antibiotics also leads to resistant strains of P. acnes.4

"This opportunity could provide an immunotherapeutic product with significant benefits and a novel mechanism of action to address an unmet medical need," according to Elias Zerhouni, M.D., President, Global Research & Development, Sanofi. "This investigational vaccine and treatment may lead to a better solution for the many who suffer from this skin disease."

According to Sanofi Pasteur's estimates, the annual worldwide market for acne therapeutics is in excess of US $3 billion. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The agreement includes a two-year research collaboration with Dr. Chun-Ming Huang and his associates at UC San Diego School of Medicine for further research and development.

About Acne5,6,7
Acne is an extremely common multi-factorial skin disease with a prevalence of 80 to 90 percent in adolescents. The disease sometimes continues through the teenage years; eight percent of 25 to
34-year olds and three percent of 35 to 44-year-old people continue to suffer from the disease. Moderate to severe acne occurs in 14 percent of five to 17-year olds and this group is more likely to seek treatment and currently faces an unmet medical need. Acne is considered a chronic disease for a limited life-time period and, although often a simple and self-limited condition, it can result in psychological, physical and social implications.

Wow, I can't believe that, even a little sing can cause acne problem, thank for letting me this useful lesson.

Theresa, thanks for the info about the buffering lotion. I too have cystic acne and am always looking for something that may help. I had about the worst case of teenage acne you could get in middle school and all the way through high school, and I now can't wear anything polyester. At least I no longer get it on the face--well, rarely.

Without a doubt over-consumption of sugars, HFCS, etc. is a major contributing factor. Just look at school lunches in your average public school. Access to vending machines in schools also doesn't help. Why wait in line and be forced to gobble down your food in 5 minutes for a 20 minute lunch break when you can just get some chips or a honey bun and a soda?

I saw a disgusting yellow ballon advertising a shingles vaccine in the grocery store today. A few steps away was a flu vaccine poster. Prepare for this while you're shopping:

Well, Jeff, there's this:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30143726/

"But dermatologists say the bacteria that causes acne is increasingly developing resistance to some commonly prescribed antibiotics, including tetracycline and erythromycin. And while the superbug MRSA is a widely known threat in the general medical community, some patients are surprised to learn that the P. acnes bacterium is equally capable of rebelling against drugs and developing superpowers. It’s acne gone wild."

I also think the modern diet (lots of processed foods and sugar) is having an effect. This is purely anecdotal, but: my mom said a friend of hers (back in the 1960s) was put on a very restricted diet to lose weight, and at the same time, her skin became amazingly clear. Sugar feeds bacteria, right?

It's probably a lot of things, but you're right: I never see daguerrotypes of kids with acne.

As for not caring about death as a side effect of an acne vaccine... I can only say that I hope "l" is either faking, or finds some hope. Life is long; acne doesn't last forever. Anyone who doesn't like you based on your skin is a friend you don't need. I've been there. Hang in there.

Jeff C

Just wondering, but is acne another one of these modern plagues that was rare before the 20th century like autism, ADHD, asthma, peanut-caused anaphalaxis and allergies?

In those 19th century photos of pioneer families with twelve kids, I don't ever remember seeing one with pimples. Is acne relatively new?

Barry

I (?) wrote: "..I really don't care if a side effect to the acne vaccine is death, I would still get it in a heartbeat. I would rather die than have to live with acne anymore. acne has already completely ruined my life.."

Looks like we've drawn out at least one troll today. You're braking my heat... I.

Theresa O

To be serious, the problem with a vaccine for a bacterium is that we could see the same problem we've seen with Prevnar. The idea of an ever-escalating war on acne with new vaccines for new serotypes... it sends chills down my spine.

I hadn't heard of the mercury connection, Jeannette, but it wouldn't surprise me.

The one product I've used with great success (for cystic acne) is Buffering Lotion from Mario Badescu, which contains hydrolyzed yeast protein--my guess was that the yeast defeats the bacterium the same way Saccharomyces Boulardii can fight C diff ... but of course I actually have no idea. I just know that it worked for me when nothing else did, and it was topical, not systemic.

Jeannette Bishop

typo: death knell

I could add, never mind any evidence of neurological damage, severe brain fog, lack of mental focus, IQ loss, etc. from Hg exposure.

Jeannette Bishop

There is a lot of anecdotal information on the internet linking Hg exposure to severe acne. A long time ago I heard a dermatologist talk about how the only research that had found any link between any substance and acne was on fish consumption and now I tend to think of methylmercury perhaps? I can't help thinking that some really good research that found even a 2% link between amalgam and acne for instance could very easily be the dell knell of "medicinal" use of Hg.

So, are they going to preserve this "acne vaccine" with thimerosal?

l

I really don't care if a side effect to the acne vaccine is death, I would still get it in a heartbeat. I would rather die than have to live with acne anymore. acne has already completely ruined my life

Theresa O

Jeff C, you made my day. Yes, acne prevents both teen pregnancy and underage drinking (not invited to parties where it takes place--again, personal experience).

Jeff C

Barry - You forgot the part about lobbying states for acne vaccine mandates. Something like this... acne causes kids to get depressed... being around depressed kids causes their friends to feel sad (it's contagious!)... a depressed kid can become unstable (dangerous complications!)... and may even require hospitalization (very costly, vaccine is much cheaper!)

However, acne is very effective in preventing teen pregnancy (personal experience), so vaccinating it out of existence may have some unforeseen social costs.

Barry

... just in case anyone wasn't already convinced that vaccines are dangerous and completely ineffective medications. This is an embarrassment to anything that even resembles science.

And I can see it now, when this vaccine does absolutely nothing to prevent acne of any form. They'll say they didn't realize that booster shots were required for complete protection against acne. And then when 2, 3 or even 4 booster shots also make no difference at all, they'll still stand by their impeccable "science" on the matter... and claim it was genetics that caused all those vaccines to fail.

They'll walk away with their billions, and claim 'coincidence" for all deaths and injuries that were sustained along the way.
