Well, we heard the other day that a leading scientist says that "You dont talk about autism in America, Its too political" (or something similar) So today we learn that the way you dont talk about autism is by discussing legal, ethical and social implications of research for , shall we say, a couple of years.(But no talk of the cause, please) After another 20 years of that and other clever ploys the populace may forget that autism has a cause. Isnt that what has happened with Alzheimers ? I personally recall when Alzheimers was first spoken of, then it became very common; Now, its definitely highly genetic, even though they cant find the gene and we are looking forward to wonderful treatments developed by the public health saviors in PARTNERSHIP with their pharmaceutical friends and the word "cause" will not appear in long articles on the topic of Alzheimers, despite the fact that their are, no doubt, populations in the world with little or no Alzheimers. Because, you see, the pharmaceutical companies like to TREAT ailments- not find their causes.
And all you parents of autistic kids and relatives of Alzheimers patients, you get to go to fun conferences and get wonderful SERVICES . But please, do remember to keep that great big smile on your rosey cheeks, because America dont want no freaks.
