Father of Injured Gardasil Girl Matches Caplan’s Bio-Unethical $10,000 Bet

In a striking move, Australian businessman and father of a Gardasil injured girl, Stephen Tunley matched University of Pennsylvania bioethicist, Dr. Art Caplan’s $10,000 reward for ‘proof of Bachmann vaccine claims.’

Dr. Caplan made headline news after Presidential Candidate Michelle Bachmann, speaking as the mother of three daughters and the foster mother of 23 other adolescent girls publically called “Gardasil – a potentially dangerous vaccine.’  Bachmann was approached by a mother of a Gardasil injured girl after the Thursday Republican Tea Party debate, and told her daughter was now ‘retarded’ (also known as brain damaged).

Caplan’s response was to place a wager on Bachmann’s ‘incredibly irresponsible falsehood.’

‘If she can produce a case in one week starting today verified by three medical experts that she and I pick of a woman who became ‘retarded’ (her words) due to HPV vaccine I will donate that to a charity of her choice.’ 1.

On Monday, September 19, 2011, SANE Vax Inc. issued a press release on what we feel is a blatant and unprecedented HIPPA violation by exposing a family of an injured child to media scrutiny. 2.

In addition, SAVE Vax Inc. emailed an Open Letter to Dr. Caplan, on September 18  stating our objections to his unethical bet.

‘On behalf of the parents of a group of neurologically injured teenage girls after HPV vaccination, we feel obligated to question your ‘bio’-ethics as you challenge Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann with a $10,000 bet to prove a claim that a vaccine to prevent cervical cancer caused mental retardation. We represent many parents of teenage girls who have suffered a variety of central nervous system (CNS) dysfunctions, including various degrees of mental ‘retardation’ (impairment) as a sequelae of Gardasil® vaccination injuries. It is hard to believe that as bioethicist you openly instigate violation of the HIPAA law.

‘Now, SANE Vax Inc. challenges you, Dr. Caplan.  Prove the vaccine Gardasil® has prevented a single case of cervical cancer. We have not found such a case in the world literature, or in the published clinical trial materials. The endpoints used for evaluating the efficacy of Gardasil® were largely self-reversible precancerous changes, not true cancer as defined in any pathology textbooks.’3.

By Monday morning SANE Vax Inc. President, Norma Erickson received this response.

‘Find the case, present it to michelle bachmann, let the doctors we agree on confirm HPV vaccine as the cause and I pay.  You have until thursday.’

Alerted to the emailed response, Stephen Tunley, researched funding sources for the University of Pennsylvania Bioethics Department and to no one’s surprise found that their primary funding source was none other than the National Institutes of Health.

Outraged, Tunley matched Caplan’s wager – and upped the ante by adding the issue of financial disclosure in the following challenge:

Dear Dr. Caplan

I would like to offer you $10,000 to you to prove that Gardasil did not and does not cause the issues discussed by Ms. Bachman and others. Of course when I win, you might care to donate the monies to SANE Vax. However and unlike your gutless prove it by Thursday deadline – I am happy to keep this offer open for a while.

On a personal note I find it revolting that a 'bioethicist" would engage in such a bet. Surely your responsibilities are to investigate, consider and approach this with an open mind. But I guess you have long since not been a "real" bioethicist and now are really a ‘vaxapologist!’

One more question: will the $10,000 be sourced from your pockets or from the bioethics centre? As you know, but perhaps many others don't know, funding for the center comes from a range of sources - including the NIH, which as we say down-under has 'skin in the game" by being a co-patent holder for Gardasil and receives royalties from its sale.

A wee bit of conflict of interest and perhaps a challenge for you and your supposed ethics! Interesting that this was not disclosed by you!

So Dr Caplan 'man up;’ disclose your conflicts and take up the challenge!

Polysorbates and boric acids are emulsifiers and able to damage the blood brain barrier by increased lipid soluability. So we most likely to see lesions or changes in the endothelial cells of the BBB.L-histidine is a type of amino acid that has the ability to transfer over the BBB.Merck uses this (Trojan horse)physiological
transport system to direct the vaccine ingredients (aluminum adjuvants, viral particles and contaminants) to the central nervous system. The aluminum adjuvant is a mitochondrial toxin and this vaccine can hyper-stimulate the brain's immune system and inflammation and brain damage becomes the possibility.So,Mr. Stephen Tunley and Ms.Michelle Bachmann are
RIGHT - "This is a dangerous vaccine." Dr??? Caplan lost.
We do not have long term studies on anybody who was saved by this Gardasil vaccine.Mr,Caplan needs to pay up.

Yes, without commenting on either Art Caplan what makes me sick are these hypocrites who make pious statements, particularly about events in the past where fault has already been conceded, but continue to BS over everyone damaged by products still current.

Incidentally, can anyone think of a more decorous synonym for BS?

Thanks, John. I'll check out the link to the Camelford incident.

My main point, though--other than plugging the Bad Blood documentary--was to point out that there seem to be two bioethicists named Art Caplan, one who says that the documentary made him question the oversight given to vaccines and other medical products and one who issues belligerent challenges to those injured by these same products. There must be two Art Caplans. I can't explain it any other way.

I am sitting here after reading this and am honestly shocked. Dr. Caplan's actions are the farthest thing away from" ethical." Tunley had it right when he called his offer gutless, too. I hope this gets even more press. It os truly shameful what vaccine injured people have to endure.

Hi Carol,

Yes, one of the places the blood was shipped to was the UK. Hundreds died horribly, it took us nearly 30 years to have a public inquiry, which apportioned mild blame to civil servants in the Department of Health and the results were barely reported in the media (it was given some attention when it started but not when it ended).

Another DH masterpiece from the year they introduced MMR was the Camelford cover up:

(You need to read from the bottom the letters from Christopher Exley and 58 others and Elizabeth Sigmund)

I just watched a documentary called "Bad Blood" detailing how blood clotting factor containing infectious HIV was sold to American hemophiliacs even after a heat treatment was developed which could render Factor safe. When the companies producing Factor could no longer sell the infectious product in America, they shipped it overseas.

On the "Bad Blood" website, I find this quote from Caplan:

"No one can come away from this film satisfied that the drugs, vaccines, devices and biological products that all of us use are receiving the oversight and accountability that is required to prevent future tragedies."

Theresa O

cmo, you are right on the money.

According to a recent article, "To immunize a patient, the vaccine requires the administration of three shots over a six-month period at a cost of $120 per injection. However, Centers for Disease Control statistics say that 73 percent of teenagers receiving injections never complete the series."

Of course, media outlets are now saying that one or two doses is enough

... but I find this not very credible, given that "Participants ... were willing to use contraception during the vaccination period." Also, the authors of this particular study indicate that 3 doses had 80.9% efficacy, 2 doses had 84.1% efficacy, and 1 dose had 100% efficacy ... which is really weird. One dose was better at protecting against HPV infection than the full three-dose series?

So... a lot of people are probably walking around thinking they're protected, when they're not, and not getting the Pap smears that would help doctors to diagnose and treat cervical lesions. Not to worry, though--I'm sure Merck would be happy to sell them a cancer treatment.

Now I'm going to go bang my head on the wall...

The September 12th Michele Bachmann HPV / Gardasil statements were made on a live TV interview, which I would assume they may try to avoid with her in the future. Ms. Bachman should soon mention the new Californian law that provides Gardasil to 12 year olds without the consent of their parents.

As pharma owns the mainstream news media, they cannot STAND IT when something, such as the TRUTH OR FACTS, leaks out onto the public airwaves. Lately the media is only talking about HPV and does not mention the word "Gardasil" in the same sentence.

I would BET a few dozen HPV VARES reports could be found of those girls dropping over immediately after the vaccine with some even dying within a day or days... Of course, in the world of pharma and the CDC "nothing ever can prove anything."

Proving that the HPV vaccine has prevented even one case of cervical cancer is certainly impossible. As those taking the vaccine might omit proper screenings in the future as they think they are protected, cancer rates could actually rise with the widespread use of the vaccine.

Out of 35 million doses, how many said the "hell with it" after one or two doses ???

With the 76 vaccines approved by the CDC is Dr. Nancy up to date with all 76 of her shots ?

I have become an instant groupie of Mr. Tunley. I loved his letter!

If anyone cares to comment, here is the link to Anderson Cooper 360 web blog about the story:

Ethicist to Bachmann: "Show me proof"

annoy the media, CDC, NIH, and AAP:

She is sooooo dreamy!

This whole drama is so far out of a bio-ethicists code of ethics, it belongs in a Las Vegas gamming room. I can't imagine being the parent of the disabled child who told Michelle Bachmann their story and then the next day several "Bioethicist" are calling for me to, by the dead line, release her private HIPPA protected medical records to they could have them torn apart by their doctors. This isn't vaccine court. What legal protections would this disabled child and her family have?'

I'm glad some other groups have jumped in to exposed the fallacy of the bioethicts.

Nice wager Mr. Tunley and excellent work calling out Arthur Caplan's myriad lapses in ethics.

Kathy Blanco

first thing I thought of when he said that, gee I wonder who is paying him to say that? Thanks for this article~!

I'm afraid there's little chance of finding any balls in Dr. Caplan's court.

This snake is academic vermon, just like the rest of his " bought and paid for" cohorts who put their bank accounts ahead of the patients they're supposed to be protecting.

I'm not in a financial position to make a similar challenges, but if I was, I would challenge anyone, anywhere in the medical establishment, to provide irrefutable scientific proof that any vaccine has ever prevented a disease of any kind.

There would be no conditions on the information they could offer as proof, just a firm reminder that epidemiology IS NOT science.

Glad I saw this before bedtime. It made my day. Just great. Maurine
