Author of Children With Starving Brains Supports Dr. Andrew Wakefield in Letter & Petition

Children with starving brains Below is the letter attached to a petition from Dr. Jaquelyn McCandless, known to many in the biomedical world as a Grandparent/Physician Warrior.  Her 2002 book Children With Starving Brains remains a valuable resource for parents seeking treatment information for autism.  She has written a letter to the GMC in England, and created a petition for hose who wish to show their support of Dr. Andrew Wakefield. You can read the petition HERE.

Re: The Inquisition of Doctors Wakefield, Murch, and Walker-Smith

As a US board-certified psychiatrist and specialist in treating children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, I want to register a complaint regarding the UK's General Medical Council (GMC) judgment (28 January 2010) concerning Andrew J. Wakefield, M.D., and two colleagues.  As with Semmelweis and puerperal fever, history will show that Dr. Wakefield should have been exonerated, apologized to, and thanked for his original evaluations and findings in autistic children.

Since 1998, the findings reported and discussed in Wakefield et al 1998 (5) have been replicated and expanded. For instance, a newly published study by U.S. gastroenterologist Dr. Arthur Krigsman et al (1) corroborates Wakefield%u2019s findings of lymphoid hyperplasia in a subgroup of autistic children. Similar findings by another group have been presented as a conference abstract (2) and are soon to be submitted for publication.

I, numerous medical colleagues who are trying to help suffering autistic children, various researchers, and many parents of autistic children believe that the GMC has focused on trivial matters as a way (i) to deflect justified criticism of the vaccination program and, as a direct result, (ii) to turn attention away from the GMC's complicity in ignoring a subgroup of severely suffering children injured by vaccinations (eg, 3-4).

Importantly, none of the parents whose child participated in the original Wakefield et al study (5) has filed a complaint against Dr. Wakefield.  Instead, numerous parents support Dr. Wakefield and his research and attest to the fact that they have been ignored or criticized for implying that vaccines may have been involved in their children%u2019s severe gastrointestinal disorders and autism.

Clinicians repeatedly hear case histories of children whose parents describe their child's adverse reactions to the MMR vaccines, including regression and the onset of significant and persistent gut problems. Clinicians who listen to these parents and evaluate their children have no doubt of the significance of Dr. Wakefield%u2019s findings for this subgroup of autistic children.

The GMC stands in irrational denial of Dr. Wakefield's now replicated findings and thereby stands in denial of appropriate treatment for children affected with pathologies which Wakefield's and other researchers' studies have elucidated (eg, 5-9) .  While the GMC ignores voluminous anecdotal reports from parents of children who regressed into autism, the GMC portrays Dr. Wakefield's 1998 paper as causing a turning away from the MMR and reports one or two children dying of measles, while neglecting to mention the thousands of children in the same time period who became afflicted with autism.  I daresay if you asked any large group of parents which they would choose - regressive autism or a bout of measles - do you believe anyone would choose autism?

In their 1998 paper, Dr. Wakefield and coauthors made clear that they "did not prove an association between measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination" and autism. Instead, they described an association between chronic enterocolitis and autistic-like brain function and clearly stated that more research is necessary (5).

I affirm my appreciation of the research by Dr. Wakefield and his colleagues and believe his persecution by the GMC arises because calling attention to subgroups who have been injured by vaccinations inappropriate for some children stands as an act of heresy amid the strident orthodoxy of contemporary vaccination policy and related profits for patent-holders and makers of vaccines.

THanky you rileymom and Benedetta. I did not expect to be lashed out at by one of my own, so it hurt alot, and you made me feel better. As though I am indeed fighting the good fight. And both of you get bear hugs! *bear huggggg*

I feel much better now. Whether that guy likes it or not, this is a world that belongs to regular folks, not to us. And NT's should not have to cater to our will anymore than we should cater to anyone elses. We do need to learn how to get along i the world.

Which includes knowing how to be a decent interviewer. And all the things I mentioned. I'm glad to know I have parents who agree with me. :)

Thank-you both, Craig and Michael.
I've been criticized for being way too sarcastic and cynical. I should have been able to spot it. Obviously I missed the whole Reagan/Carter exchange.
Also on side note. Major compulsory vaccine type legislation allowing medical providers to vaccinate children against parental consent with no age limits being voted on in New York tomorrow in the Codes Committee. Already passed their Senate. Identical bill is in their Health Committee. Express your views to them now! If it passes you all know it will be contagious, and expressing your views is the only vaccine to prevent it spread :-)

I'm a mom and YOU have my support. Imagine me wrapping my arms around you and telling you that you have every right to want these things. You also have every right to voice those needs and wants.
The person you posted about...expects the world to bend over for them because, what...They're a savant? Good for them. Glad he/she can express themselves using art.

who ever you were talking too was a savant.
When they use the word savant change that word in your head to "I am better than all others on the autism spectrum and probably the rest of those normal people too"
or " I am a wizard and have magic powers while the rest are not"

Savants are very rare, and the savants that I know about are severly disabled. That is their brain is full of music, or drawing, or painting, or calculating the what day your birthday lands on each year from the beginning of time. Does not leave any room for having an apartment, or a mate, or other things.

Who ever is writing you is lying.

michael framson

To Jenny, Yes I was being snarky with a somersault reverse twist and 1-1/2 degree rotation. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

The "There you go again" was a quip from Ronald Reagan directed at Jimmy Carter.

On a another note, NPR gave us Paul Offit crap last night and NPR this morning appears to be auditioning as a vaccine safety sheet. I expect that pediatricians will make it a part of their vaccination propaganda to parents. You must listen to NPR. You must listen to NPR.

Hopefully this also gets on after last message I posted. Theo was a typo he corrected, he said it was supposed to say Though with the comma being more in the middle of the sentence.

Darian (nickname)

This is off the topic, but I needed someone to talk to. I really got my feelings hurt on a blog on the autism hub. There was a post about adult issues finally being looked at. I posted this in the comments:

"It’s about TIME!!!!! I’ve been harping on the complete and utter lack of services for adults on the spectrum for seven years!! There is so much potential in those on the spectrum! So much talent, intelligence, and skill that is wasted because there is no one there willing to help us learn how to use those skills in a work setting.

Teach us how to get along in a work enviorment. What is and is not appropriate when talking to your employer or your fellow employees. Interview skills is also a big area that would need some work. How to do things such as budgetting, cooking, cleaning, managing a checkbook. We can do all of these things, but if no one is willing to help us learn in a way we can understand, we will continue to sit behind closed doors and rot away.

We could do so much for the world if only given the chance and the little boost up. But there is nothing! It’s about time they took notice of it because we needed these services YESTERDAY!!"

I got this in reply!!!

"Theo, I agree with must of what you say, except:

Why do you believe that people on the Autism spectrum should have to conform to some socially-abelist “norm” ?

That idea stands TOTALLY and COMPLETELY rejected by me.

I am not going to waste the precious amounts of the LESSER cererebral blood flow (and energy) I have that makes me an artistis Autistic savant on running around unproductively trying to socially “please” (feed the dopamine-receptor social addictions) the other non-Autistic neurotype.

The best and highest use of my Autistic savant abilities is to draw, paint, and write—maybe be a lawyer and judge someday if I can ever get fairness, equality, and Justice. It takes ALL (100 %) of my available cerebral LESSER blood flow to use my Autistic savant talents and abilities to the best and highest use.

WHY would anyone be so utterly IGNORANT and ABSURD in an economic disaster like we are seeing in the U.S. and much of the rest of the World, WASTING 40 % more efficient Autistic brains—and run our economies at 40 % LESS than PEAK efficiency (by hiring Autistics for our talents, not to give Morphine-like feed-the-dopmine-social pleasantries-addiction of the other 40 % LESS efficient brain type ?

That’s ECONOMIC Suicide ! Not to mention an insane idea So your statement below, I TOTALLY REJECT because I think the non-Autistics need to learn to get along with Autism people, not the other way around.

I do not have the neurology to “keep up with the Joneses” of full-tilt social schedules, crowds, and too much background sensory input. AS you suggest I should have to—that is, be forced to conform my neurology in a way that is physically impossible for my brain cerebral blood flow (and also one that will exacerbate brain damage) ?

I agree with everything you said but NOT the below statement, which I have excised from your post:

“Teach us how to get along in a work enviorment. What is and is not appropriate when talking to your employer or your fellow employees. Interview skills is also a big area that would need some work.”

I do not agree that Autism spectrum people should have to do in-person interviews, and therefore the social-requirement of “interview skills” discriminates against Autism. I think jobs need to be restructured to Fit the Autistic neurology NOT “teach” us “to get along”-socially, and therefore I likewise reject as yet another social-requirement discriminating against Autism, the criteria of what is ‘neurotypically socially-appropriate.”

‘Neurotypically socially appropriate’ criteria cannot be used contrary to the Autism neurology in the same way stairs were used against people confined to wheelchairs.

In closing, I do not want to diiminish the significance of what you said in the rest of your post. Thx !"

That last sentence made me laugh though upset. Because he spent his entire post treating me like an ignorent person. As though I did not care about people like us, only making us "normal". It hurt me because I spend every single breath advocating for people on the Spectrum!

Every single thing I do almost is dedicated to helping those like me to achieve thier goals and to lead as independent and happy and sucessful as a life as possible. And he acted like I didn't care!!

I'm just rather upset right now. There are alot of moms here. I need some mom comfort I guess.

You know where my heart is right?

Case NOT closed!

Dr. McCandless' book has been on my favorites list since its first printing.

Thank you for supporting Dr. Wakefield!

Craig Willoughby

Jenny, he was just being facetious. He was adding a little snarky humor to his comment was all.

To: Michael Framson -
I agree with Dr. McCandless. I also agree with Craig Willoughby. And what history shows us is that if we are not aware of history and learning from it, we are likely to repeat its mistakes. Every parent of a newly vaccine damaged child is learning too late from history. Not taking into account that past behavior is a great indicator to future behavior and applying it to the motives of profit minded corporations, and the attached corporate influenced policy makers results in more medically damaged citizens. And it needs to be pointed out again and again, and again and again, until the end of mankind.
Can you please clarify yourself. You appear to agree with Craig in paragraphs 2 and 3, but your first paragraph appears to condemn him for reiterating the tragedy of our medical establishments, which benefits any reader just learning about it.
Thank-you in advance for your response.

Thank you Dr. McCandless!

"As with Semmelweis and puerperal fever, history will show that Dr. Wakefield should have been exonerated, apologized to, and thanked for his original evaluations and findings in autistic children."

As a non-medical person, I learned about Semmelweis here at AoA. A recent study I can't remember well enough link to found something along the lines that most/many adverse drug effects are dismissed (or at least that was the perception the patient was left with) by their doctors. Is the teaching of this history and maybe ways to avoid this a common part of medical school?

Another often recurring course of events in vaccine history seems to be tragedy, particularly when something new is tried, and I have to wonder with today's fervor to find a vaccine for anything that can possibly be linked to a "germ" or even some immune dysfunctions (possibly caused by vaccination in the first place), how many of these vaccine developers and proponents involved know their history? If they do, do they really believe we have advanced so far beyond those kinds of errors?

Beatrice Shook

Thank goodness for people like Dr. Wakefield and Dr.McCandless! To a mother of a child with autism, their determination and work in the field is nothing short of a wonderful miracle.

michael framson

Craig, there you go again, raising the obvious questions. What's your agenda? Why are you trying to point out the obvious double standards and hypocrisy?

I think Andrew Wakefield pointed out in one (CBS?) interview, "its corporate policy." The battles we fight, is the battle of entrenched unethical, corrupt corporate policies; no matter whether it is in the government or industry, its still corporate policy to deceive, misinform, malign, twist, deny, cover-up,hide,threaten, and damage anyone, anything which will jeopardize corporate policy.

Dangerous Drugs that injure people, corporate policy.
Getting away with it, corporate policy. Medical journals behaving badly, corporate policy. Shameful Pharmaceutical ethical violations, corporate policy.

Tim Kasemodel

Thank you Dr. McCandless for standing up for Dr. Wakefield.

It means a lot for him, but it means a lot more for us parents who don't have those "all important" initials "M.D." after our names. After all, thats what most people look for - the average parent seems to trust their doctor over the 1 in 100 parents who ends up an autistic child.

Autism Grandma

Regarding Post by Craig Willoughby:

"Does anyone else think this is a bit, I don't know....stupid?"

How 'bout Horrifically Disgusting??!!

I am signing this petition. Amen Sister to Dr. McCandless!!!

Did the Lancet ever have Vioxx advertisments ??

They would certainly want to return any such funds they received for that fine product.

.... I heard only one in 10,000 Toyota's has shown a severe problem... one in 100 children is not to be a concern....

Three cheers and thank you, Dr. McCandless.

Good question, Craig Willoughby.

Craig Willoughby

One thing that really bothers me about the whole Dr. Wakefield GMC trial;

Does anyone know if anyone who was involved in the Vioxx scandal was prosecuted? If they were, then it wasn't even close to the extent that Dr. Wakefield was.

So, the message I take from this;

Lying about the safety of a product made by Pharmaceutical companies in order to sell it and thereby killing thousands of people because of it = good.

Does anyone else think this is a bit, I don't know....stupid?

I carry her book in my library where it has gotten significant use.

Ask for it at your local public library. If a library gets multiple requests for a particular book, sometimes they'll buy it.
