H1N1: Fact or Fiction By Barbara Loe Fisher

Knowledge is power By Barbara Loe Fisher

It's been about six months since the Department of Health and Human Services and the Secretary of Homeland Security followed the World Health Organization and declared a very scary pandemic influenza public health emergency in the United States.

Last spring we suddenly found ourselves watching You Tube videos of people being quarantined in hotels and detained on airplanes by HazMat teams. When we went to the grocery stores, we encountered fellow Americans wearing face masks. And every time we turned on the television, there were news reports about schools closing so desks and lockers could be scrubbed down.

The Worst Is Yet To Come?

And we watched CDC press conferences warning us that the worst was surely yet to come because the H1N1 swine flu virus first identified outside a pig farm in Mexico had the potential to mutate and kill tens of thousands more Americans than the 36,000 that CDC officials tell us die every year from seasonal influenza.

It was enough to make us very, very afraid.

No Liability for Vaccine Makers

It was enough to make Congress give drug companies more than a billion dollars of our taxes to quickly create H1N1 swine flu vaccines and then throw in another couple of billion dollars for health officials to deliver and aggressively promote vaccination in Sesame Street ads and on the internet and radio and TV. And while they were at it, Congress shielded everyone who has anything to do with making, promoting and giving swine flu vaccines from all liability in civil court whenever somebody gets hurt or dies after getting vaccinated.

It was enough to make us very, very afraid.

Health Worker Mandates & School Vaccination Programs

It was scary enough to make legislators in Massachusetts and other states talk about passing stronger laws to suspend civil liberties and force people to be quarantined or vaccinated whenever a public health emergency was declared. It was scary enough to prompt New York state health officials to mandate that health care workers get seasonal and H1N1 influenza shots or be fired. And then there were calls by public health officials for children to line up and get vaccinated in schools just like in the polio mass vaccination campaigns of the 1950's and early 60's....

To address those questioning the efficacy of the influenza vaccines:

In contrast to the seasonal influenza vaccine which is relatively "hit or miss" (mostly hit, but occasional miss) because the strains included in the yearly vaccine are chosen ~18mo before the flu season and are subject to variation... The H1N1 vaccine has the potential to be nearly 100% effective because there's no guessing on the strain-- it's already known, and can afford very specific immunogenicity for that single influenza strain.

"The thimerosal issue" has NEVER been "debunked." Injecting infants with mercury is just plain stupid.

Again for LK - what about 1997 when NO ONE in effect had a flu vaccine because they targeted the wrong strain??? Mass chaos, much death!!?? Why no response to my question? C'mon, I am dying for someone to tell me what happened.

"Also, apparently your herd immunity idea does not pertain to immunized populations;it only pertains to REAL disease."

I was just reading an article that discusses this towards the end:

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/11/14/Expert-Pediatrician-Exposes-Vaccine-Myths.aspx

jen

LK, I would hardly call the thimerosal issue "debunked" when Hewitson's primate research showed that hep b shots to infant primates (with thim) caused delay in neonatal responses compared to primates who got no vaccines (Oh my God, a true control group!). They did say that they couldn't be sure which ingredients had that effect but that it showed the need for further study.
Also, apparently your herd immunity idea does not pertain to immunized populations;it only pertains to REAL disease. I will try to look up the name of the doctor who recently stated this.

Sorry if you don.t like it that I mention the pharma guys are making a lot of money off this but it is true.

LK - assuming everything you post is true (for the sake of argument) - is it ethical, moral, or even legal (e.g. New Jersey) to require CHILDREN to carry the burden of protecting society at large, for an illness from which most people (according to Anne Schucat at the CDC during a live conference that I heard myself) recover without any health professional intervention?

Is that what the flu vaccine is really about - herd immunity? Then why don't the pro-vax people just SAY that - instead of trying to scare everyone into getting it?

IMHO that's not as palatable an argument which is why you see so much fear-mongering about the flu.

It is not my children's responsibility, nor anyone else's children's responsiblity - to protect OTHER people from the flu. If parents believe it is in THEIR child's best interest to get it - fine. But the decision should revolve around the best interest of each particular child - NOT society at large. That is just my opinion.

There is a limit to the "social contract."

From the package insert of one of the formulations of the H1N1 vaccine. All of the formulations other than the live vaccine have very similar inserts.

7 DRUG INTERACTIONS
7.1 Concurrent Use With Other Vaccines
There are no data to assess the concomitant administration of Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine with other vaccines. If Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine is to be given at the same time as another injectable vaccine(s), the vaccine(s) should be administered at different injection sites.

(So let's give it with other vaccines anyway)

7.2 Concurrent Use With Immunosuppressive Therapies
The immunological response to Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine may be diminished in individuals receiving corticosteroid or immunosuppressive therapies.

(Shouldn't stop us from giving it to them, though....won't hurt nobody, right?)

8.1 Pregnancy
Pregnancy Category C: Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted with Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine or AFLURIA. It is also not known whether these vaccines can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman or can affect reproduction capacity. Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine should be given to a pregnant woman only if clearly needed.

(We don't know if this will harm pregnant mothers and their unborn children, so let's put them at the top of the list for those that need to get it the most.)

8.3 Nursing Mothers
Neither Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine nor AFLURIA has been evaluated in nursing mothers. It is not known whether Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine or AFLURIA is excreted in human milk. Because many drugs are excreted in human milk, caution should be exercised when Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine is administered to a nursing woman.

(Ignore the "caution is to be exercised" comment....just give them the damned vaccine!)

8.4 Pediatric Use
Safety and effectiveness of Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine and AFLURIA in children below 6 months of age have not been established.

(But, lets give it to them anyway)

LK

Jen,

While individual protection afforded by the flu vaccine does not approach 100%, it is significant. There are many published clinical trials that prove this. What really helps bring the protection up to the 90% or so level is the herd immunity that results when a significant number of people (especially kids and parents of school-aged kids) are vaccinated. There was a very nice mathematical modeling study published on this recently. Also your straw-man argument about public health officials and drug companies being evil is not really an argument. Finally, the flu vaccines in this country do not contain adjuvant, and the thimerosal issue has already been debunked.

Jessica

LK - Where is the data that shows these vaccines are in any way effective? It's not out there. Do some research on how effective flu shots are and your mind might be opened a little further. Especially look at 1997 when they got the wrong strain of the virus to target in vaccines (meaning NO ONE was vaccinated against the "right" strain of flu in 1997!) and check out the mortality numbers from that year. Did millions die because there was no vaccination? Of course not.

Just like the magical CDC number "36,000 people DIE every year from the flu!") is an outrageous, bold-faced lie to the public, so is all of this H1N1 plan-demic crap.

They are not even TESTING for H1N1 anymore!!! In England they were diagnosing people over the phone and passing out Tamiflu like candy! Yah sure - "devastating pandemic" my ass!

LK, if you look at the Cochrane Collaborative Reviews you will see that flu vaccines are not very effective. So we will get all the bad side effects from the thimerosal and adjuvant and no real help for the devastating plandemic. It's only really a win for the pharmaceutical guys.

jen

LK, sadly, public health officals, by sanctioning unsafe vaccines (that contain thimerosal and in Canada, adjuvant) are also putting a lot of children and adults in harms way. They COULD be vaccinating more safely without these ingredients but they are not. They do not give a damn about kids' safety and the pharmaceutical companies will be making a profit from these unsafe plandemic vaccinations. (we may see more alzheimers in adults from getting both regular and H1N1 shots and more kids with autism and seizures,guillaume-barre learning disabilities, asthma etc.) Don't ask me to be happy about that.
In fact, efficacy of the vaccines in preventing H1N1 is probably not known even and since they are not testing, how would they know if you had H1N1 vaccine but got H1N1 anyways?
For me and my family we will focus on vit D, omegas and homeopathic remedies if anyone does get sick.

LK

Listen, public health officials this spring were trying to head off a possibly devastating pandemic of H1N1. If they had ignored it, and millions of people happened to die, would you be happy? While it may not be reaching the seriousness of the 1918 flu, it is still a public health threat. I know many MD's and all are getting their kids immunized, pending sufficient vaccine supply.

It's all about the facts, right? At least with the CDC, they need to know confirmed cases of H1N1 to post an accurate number on their website as well as using it to "inform" people through the media, right?? Well, not so true here in MA. Apparently if you are not of a high risk group (under 6 months of age or immune compromised) you can't get tested for H1N1 in most pediatrician offices since the treatment is the same as the seasonal flu and the state is so inundated with the amount of testing they have to do currently. So, what are the doctors reporting to the CDC? What makes the numbers accurate? Well, by the sounds of the explanantion I have been given, only those people that fall within the high risk group are making up the numbers reported. without a confirmation or diagnosis, how can you accurately report anyting? If you are going to be so concerned about me or my children getting the vaccine, don't you think you should be as concerned about when they get sick with symptoms of H1N1? Our pedi's recommendation was to treat with Tylenol, fluids and hugs and off we went. All 3 children, (one with PDD-NOS) weathered the H1N1 storm just fine and thankfully, we don't have to worry about anymore in-your-face propoganda to have them be shot up.
I am sick of being mauled by the media on vaccines that are unhealthy, don't work and leave your child hurt for the rest of their lives.
I wish more Americans would hold their gov't accountable for the facts. When you obviously are not getting it, SAY SOMETHING!
Stop assuming they have your best interests at hand.

About Nov 12th last week the CDC suddenly decided to multiply the number of children's deaths by four and provide a new report to the media.

Is any other country in the world spending as much money on the hype of the H1N1 ?

Theresa O

Hi, Colton,

If we're going to be picky about the numbers, that CDC link shows only 156 pediatric deaths from confirmed H1N1. The 179 figure includes other strains of influenza A as well as other influenza types (B or C).

I also view all government figures for flu deaths with a touch of skepticism, because the figures change whenever it seems to suit the purposes of the people using the figures. For example, just this week I saw a blip on TV that said that the government has changed the total US death tally from 1800 to 4000, because health officials have decided to include people who were already dying of something else and happened to get H1N1. Now, that 4000-death figure is being reported as the actual total (for example, here: http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story/0,22606,26344620-912,00.html).

Of course, any infectious disease could harm a person who was previously perfectly healthy. A person could, for example, get H1N1 and then go to the hospital, where he picks up a bacterial infection (like staph) that eventually kills him. That happens, even to healthy people, I'm sure. (It sounds as if that's what happened to the girl whose parents were guests on Larry King Live recently: http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0911/02/lkl.01.html)

I don't think Barbara is trying to say that people should take a cavalier attitude toward infectious diseases; however, I do think she's asking people to have a little perspective about the lethality of this particular flu strain, particularly as it affects what we allow our lawmakers to do, e.g., give immunity to makers of flu vaccines and antiviral drugs.

Colton

I want accurate reporting but there is a huge gap of information that Barbara seems to either be intentionally overlooking or this is just an old article. Because there is this paragraph that she wrote which is entirely wrong and the information can easily be found.

"Wait a minute. Didn’t President Obama stand up at a press conference in October and say that 1,000 Americans, including about 100 children, had died from H1N1 swine flu? 39

But were those 1,000 H1N1 lab confirmed deaths or deaths that were ASSUMED by the CDC to be deaths caused by swine flu?

And how does that number of deaths compare with the 36,000 deaths that CDC officials say are caused by seasonal influenza every year?"

We know that of pediatric deaths there are currently 179 laboratory confirmed. Information is posted clearly on the CDC website here:

http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/updates/us/#pedh1n1cases

We also know that the last flu season only killed about 75 children. So the number of children who have died all ready this flu season has doubled. I want people to have the facts as much as anyone but purposely disorting the facts and putting it in question form, when the answers are CLEARLY out there, just now makes me suspicious of Barbara.

We know the demographics of the 36,000 that have died annually from the seasonal flu are elderly. While I think we need to use some extra caution and precaution for our children I definitely don't think we should downplay the pediatric deaths here. The H1N1 does seem to be affecting children more. So let's try to keep a level head I agree, but I certainly don't want to ignore any information or have a parent be mislead to think that this H1N1 flu couldn't harm their now perfectly healthy child. It's okay to take some extra precautions and I hope that this website can reflect that we may need to be a bit more aware of this strain of flu with our children.

Barbara's website is the one I most frequently send people to. So many want to know how to make the right decision for their families when it comes to vaccinating. Thank you, Barbara!
