But There's Mercury in the H1N1 Vaccine! Curiouser and Curiouser.
Thank you to the very talented AoA contributor Adriana Gamondes for this photo and the link to the National Institutes of Health's "Mad as a Hatter" campaign HERE.
As you may already know, the majority of the new H1N1 injectible vaccines contain mercury. In fact, the recommendation to remove mercury from childhood vaccines has been put on hiatus for the H1N1 pandemic vaccination campaign. Is there no "satisfactory alternative" to the mercury laden vaccine? (See below.) Perhaps someone from the NIH mercury free campaign can enlighten us. Dr. Insel? From the NIH site:
The Mad as a Hatter Campaign is a voluntary pollution prevention initiative intended to improve awareness of mercury hazards and eliminate unnecessary uses of mercury at all NIH facilities.
This effort builds on the successful mercury reduction campaign in the mid - 1990's conducted by the Warren G. Magnuson Clinical Center (CC) at the NIH. John E. Porter past chairman of the House Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations, noted that the CC Campaign was an example of the leadership that NIH was taking in reducing the use of environmentally damaging chemicals and that such efforts should pervade the entire research community.
Paris Glendening, past governor of Maryland cited the campaign as setting "a high standard for environmental outreach and education."
We invite all members of that community, within and outside NIH, to join us in this effort.
What do we mean by "mercury-free"?
There are some uses of mercury in biomedical research, medicine and facility infrastructure for which there are presently no satisfactory alternatives. The intent of this campaign is to eliminate all unnecessary uses of mercury and reduce human exposure to potential releases of mercury to the environment from unavoidable uses to the lowest level that can be reasonably be achieved.
Mercury is a dangerous, often unrecognized hazard, commonly found at work, home and schools. The Campaign for a Mercury Free NIH seeks to eliminate all unnecessary uses of mercury in the NIH facilities; encourage use of safer alternatives in biomedical research; increase general awareness of mercury hazards; and prevent mercury spills and pollution.
Why were Hatters MAD ?
In Alice in Wonderland (1865), Lewis Carroll selected a hat maker as the demented host for the tea party. Hatters of the time commonly exhibited slurred speech, tremors, irritability, shyness, depression and other neurological symptoms; hence the expression "mad as a hatter." Carroll was probably unaware that the hatter's disabilities were symptoms of mercury poisoning. In the mid-1800s hat makers used hot solutions of mercuric nitrate to shape wool felt hats. They typically worked in poorly ventilated rooms leading to chronic occupational exposure to mercury and neurological damage that followed.
Here's is NIH pass-the-buck response to my question: "Why does NIH allow 24.5 mcg/ml of mercury in H1N1 shots that are being given to pregnant women?":
From NIH:
The NIH is not a regulatory agency; we do not control the use of mercury preservatives in vaccines. This is a responsibility of the Food and Drug Administration. The FDA has sections on its website with questions and answers about mercury in vaccines:
http://www.fda.gov/BiologicsBloodVaccines/vaccines/QuestionsaboutVaccines/ucm070430.htm

Additional information is available on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Website:

Information on NIH publications and research can be found by accessing the NIH website www.nih.gov and entering “mercury vaccines” in the search box at the top of the main page.

FWIW, I asked the CDC the same question and got such a convoluted response that I won't bother posting because I'm still trying to decipher it.

I found this millegram to microgram converter:
http://www.unitconversion.org/weight/micrograms-to-milligrams-conversion.html
24.5 mcg/ml in vaccine = .0245 millegrams (mg)/ ml
EPA's safe limit is .002 millegrams/ liter or 2 micrograms/ liter
so....
24.5 mcg/ml are in the H1N1 vaccine
2 mcg/liter is what EPA says is safe

I don't mean to sound like a moron here but from this statement, not being a measurement wizard, could someone do the math and tell me how many ppb 25.5 mcg/mL is? So that I can compare what's in the H1NI vaccine with the epa .002 mg/L or 2 ppb? Please put this in simple english and use the same nomencalture.
From an earlier post:
According to the H1N1 vaccine insert there is 24.5 mcg/mL in each .5 ml dose of the vaccine however each multi-dose vial contains ten, .5 ml doses.
Here is the mercury content in H1N1 vaccine (from the Insert):
Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine is supplied as a 0.5 mL preservative-free, single-dose, pre-filled syringe (packaged without needles) and as a 5 mL multi-dose vial containing ten 0.5 mL doses, with thimerosal, a mercury derivative, added as a preservative; each 0.5 mL dose contains 24.5 mcg of mercury.
This is what EPA says is safe:
EPA has set an enforceable regulation for mercury, called a maximum contaminant level (MCL), at 0.002 mg/L or 2 ppb.

@ Hanno Kirk--
I believe the nasal spray is a live attenuated version of the vaccine that does not contain thimerosal. Thimerosal is in the multi-dose vials of injected flu vaccine. The problem with the nasal spray is that it causes the recipient to shed live virus, thus risking further spreading of the flu.
Posted by: Theresa | October 16, 2009 at 05:48 PM
Question for any one: Is the nasal spray version of vaccine containing Thimerosol as dangerous as the injected type?

And to render the vaccine mercury free, all they do is add more aluminum. There is no safe vaccine, no ingredient is safe.
Bishop NJ, Morley R, Day JP, Lucas A. Aluminum neurotoxicity in preterm infants receiving intravenous-feeding solutions. N Engl J Med. 1997 May 29;336(22):1557-61. Comment in: N Engl J Med. 1997 Oct 9;337(15):1090-1 PMID: 9324646 Medical Research Council (MRC) Dunn Nutrition Unit, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
BACKGROUND: Aluminum, a contaminant of commercial intravenous-feeding solutions, is potentially neurotoxic. We investigated the effect of perinatal exposure to intravenous aluminum on the neurologic development of infants born prematurely. METHODS: We randomly assigned 227 premature infants with gestational ages of less than 34 weeks and birth weights of less than 1850 g who required intravenous feeding before they could begin enteral feeding to receive either standard or specially constituted, aluminum-depleted intravenous-feeding solutions. The neurologic development of the 182 surviving infants who could be tested was assessed by using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development at 18 months of age. RESULTS: The 90 infants who received the standard feeding solutions had a mean (+/-SD) Bayley Mental Development Index of 95+/-22, as compared with 98+/-20 for the 92 infants who received the aluminum-depleted solutions (P=0.39). In a planned subgroup analysis of infants in whom the duration of intravenous feeding exceeded the median and who did not have neuromotor impairment, the mean values for the Bayley Mental Development Index for the 39 infants who received the standard solutions and the 41 infants who received the aluminum-depleted solutions were 92+/-20 and 102+/-17, respectively (P=0.02). The former were significantly more likely (39 percent, vs. 17 percent of the latter group; P=0.03) to have a Mental Development Index of less than 85, increasing their risk of subsequent educational problems. For all 157 infants without neuromotor impairment, increasing aluminum exposure was associated with a reduction in the Mental Development Index (P=0.03), with an adjusted loss of one point per day of intravenous feeding for infants receiving the standard solutions. CONCLUSIONS: In preterm infants, prolonged intravenous feeding with solutions containing aluminum is associated with impaired neurologic development

Sometimes I drop the kids off at school come home and read AOA and just am astounded! I mean, ARE YOU JOKING??? The insanity of this campaign on the heels of all of their assurances thimerosal is "safe", is just unbelievable. I would love for mercury to be removed from everywhere as well, but this hypocrisy is almost too much to bear.

If slavery had lobbyists we'd never have abolished slavery in this country. Big Pharma has lobbyists. Only one way to stop this. Go to the people, get the message out to the the general masses, the mainstreamers, the common man and woman, campaign to them... Advertise a whole campaign against all vaccines and big pharma--Show them the ugly effects. Compare that of inlisted vaccine injured to pictures of your vaccine injured kids. They started the game by making parents look like crazy people, now let's finish it. Undermine the system bring down the Matrix people! If nobody is getting/buying vaccines there is nothing to sell.

John, I don't think your statement was immoderate...if you mean the remark about preying on children. I don't think you're ever immoderate. We're not the only consumer group which accuses the NIMH in particular of this. I know of a famous reform psychiatrist who used to spit on the ground whenever he'd pass NIMH headquarters in Bethesda. In his practice, he'd constantly seen clients after they'd ended up with the very types of drug-induced brain injuries that NIMH researchers try to bury the evidence of at the behest of their pharma sponsors. The revolving employment door between the psychopharmaceutical industry and the NIMH is legendary and the agency serves its masters well. Billions and billions in taxpayer funds have been used over the years to make certain psychoactive drugs look better and safer than they really are so that the public mistakenly gives them to their children, their elderly relatives and themselves. The entire existence of the NIMH is to make psychiatry look like an actual branch of medicine which, if it were, it would have been absorbed into neurology ages ago as one reformist put it.
The research facilities of the NIMH are located at the NIH campus, so surely NIMH researchers-- those responsible for burying evidence of environmental causes of all types of "mental disturbances" for decades-- benefit from a safer environment which the agency has systematically denied to the public.
You could say that the NIMH is the lynchpin of industry's practice of doubling back the blame for all sorts of environmental cognitive or even social-emotional injuries (impact of racism, sexism, violence, war, etc.) to the individuals themselves. The NIMH produces industry's victim-blaming, "science-y sounding" alibis. You could also say that Thomas Insel's job is that of a human cork (don't try to visualize it); he's charged with sitting atop a bottle filled with decades of corruption and agency secrets. To admit to even one tiny aspect of corruption opens the Pandora's box of the rest which would pour out like a putrid daisy chain. So keeping the past out of reach also means continuously perpetuating it.
There are so many examples of ways in which the NIMH wrongly quarantines the burgeoning rates of so many cognitive disorders to victims or victims' families of origin. Autism is just one on the list of many and the agency has had so much practice. For one, the NIMH buried evidence in the 80s that schizophrenia is environmental. Then my favorite example other than autism is how the NIMH buried and ignored mounting evidence of the epidemic of "silent" lead poisoning among inner city youth in the 70s, 80s and 90s because finding the real reason for behavior disturbances among deprived minority children would have gotten in the way of the government funded "Federal Violence Initiatives".
These racist programs were guided by NIMH researchers who wanted to prove that capacity for criminality and violence was linked-- to put it simply-- to being black. They funded spinal taps on inner city toddlers, pumped 10 times the dose of fenfluramine that would be dangerous to an adult into African American children, discussed prophylactically drugging black youth as a "violence prevention" and on and on. One former head of the NIMH-- defrocked NPR radio host Fred Goodwin--compared young inner city men to "monkeys in the jungle who just want to mate and kill" (not very rough quote). He said this just BEFORE the NIMH drafted him to be the country's top psychiatrist.
Finding real causes of behavior just isn't what the NIMH is about. NOT finding real causes keeps them all in busines--in this case, of raking in and forecasting the billions in profits from drugging the increasing number of individuals with autism throughout their lifetimes.

For what is worth I was reading over the summer the excellent 'Vermeer's Hat' by Timothy Brook, and apparently hatters were already notoriously mad on account of their their exposure to chemicals including mercury in the early 17th century. Fascinating read which explains a lot about the modern world, and global trade, in embryo. The machinations of our health officials would seem quite of a piece with the chaotic and arbitrary world Brook describes.

I like the photo, Insel's demented smile goes good with the hair and the mad hatter hat.

Good Lord! Are they not aware that they are also describing symptoms of autism here.
NIH can not claim that this concern should not apply to thimerosal in flu vaccine. Here's what the Mercury in Medicine report says about safety guidelines for ethyl mercury/thimerosal:
MERCURY IN MEDICINE REPORT
HON. DAN BURTON
OF INDIANA
IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
US Congressional Record - Tuesday, May 20, 2003
(Original Document is 20 pages long and may be found in its entirety at http://www.aapsonline.org/vaccines/mercinmed.pdf )
II. FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Prepared by the Human Rights & Wellness, Committee on Government Reform
This report is the result of a three-year investigation initiated in the Committee on
Government Reform.
Safe Exposure Standard as Reported in Executive Summary: Congress has long been concerned about the human
exposure to mercury through medical applications. As a result of these concerns, in 1997, Congress instructed the FDA to
evaluate the human exposure to mercury through drugs and foods. Through this Congressionally mandated evaluation,
the FDA realized that the amount of ethylmercury infants were exposed to in the first six months of life through their
mandatory vaccinations exceeded the Environmental Protection Agency s (EPA) limit for a closely associated compound
methylmercury. The FDA and other Federal agencies determined that in the absence of a specific standard for
ethylmercury, the limits for ingested methylmercury should be used for injected ethylmercury. The Institute of
Medicine, in 2000, evaluated the EPA s methylmercury standard and determined that based upon scientific data
that it, rather than the FDA s, was the scientifically validated safe exposure standard.
Soooo, NIH says their employees shouldn't have "unnecessary" exposure to mercury in biologics (vaccines are a from of biologics) yet NIH isn't concerned about unnecessary exposure by the rest of us. Thimerosal in vaccines is COMPLETELY unnecessary! Single dose vials are made with out it and multi dose vials can be manufactured using other preservatives.

The H1N1 vaccine insert also says:
"Pregnancy Category C: Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted with Influenza A
(H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine or AFLURIA. It is also not known whether these vaccines can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman or can affect reproduction capacity. Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine should be given to a pregnant woman only if clearly needed. "
I emailed the CDC yesterday to confront them on them on why they're pushing this vaccine on pregnant women when it's not known whether it will harm the fetus and says should be given only when clearly needed.

Great photo work Adriana...
Has anyone ever confirmed with Dr. Insel & the IACC that the Autism community is talking about mercury the element and not Mercury the planet ???
That could account for their rather distant behavior.
Posted by: curtis | October 15, 2009 at 01:36 PM
Dr. Insel is then a liar and a cheat. He has continually lied while children continue to be injured by mercury and he thus cheats them, their families, their nation out of a healthy life while taking away the many possibilities that they may have been able to contribute to our country. Instead many will be a financial burden and live a life that was not their destiny.

Sorry, that was an immoderate statement.
What we have is the longest filibuster in history - people using every kind of procedural trick to block a proper discussion, which if it ever took place they would certainly lose - in fact they have already lost on moral grounds. Issues which should have been addressed a decade ago are still being talked out, and any concessions they ever make are simply with a view to wasting more time.

Scary image Adriana - no better than he deserves. They prey on children.
Posted by: John Stone | October 15, 2009 at 10:57 AM
Lets remove from the workplace and environment and then inject it directly into babies and pregnant women!!! Are these people insane!
Posted by: Susan Cranmer | October 15, 2009 at 10:16 AM
That is a great picture Adriana.
The contradictory view on Mercury is mind boggling.
