The possible relationship between metabolic disorders, elevated lactic acid levels, and features of autism spectrum disorder have been described in the medical literature since the early 90's. In fact, much research exploring the correlation between autism or ASD (autism spectrum disorder) and mitochondrial dysfunction has been published throughout the last decade, long before the Hannah Poling case (March 2008) brought the association to the public's attention.

Autism, Dyslexia, Attention Deficit Disorder are all potential pitfalls when a child doesn't have proper child development. I think all families should be wary of this.

Kim - I think you joined a bit after Dr. Poling joined the c/c?
There was quite a difference in Dr. Holtzman's 'approach & attitude' before Dr. Poling joined and after. Before Dr. Poling spoke about his experiences and thoughts, it was a lot of the same ole', same ole' tired mantra stuff from Dr. Holtzman. AFTER Dr. Poling spoke, Dr. Holtzman at least was willing to admit that there is a lot we don't know about mito disorders and that an open mind is needed.
TG that Dr. Poling joined.. if not, I think Dr. Holtzman would have stayed with his 'parent anecdotes do not reason for concern' make..

I'm listening. And Dr. Holtzman is listening. Many familiar folks on the list.

Mary Coleman wrote about in the seventies calling it LACTIC ACIDOSIS....my doctor in Seattle, over a decade ago, found high lactate and pyruvic acid in my kids (he tested my kids first on a suspiscion due to my son haveing signs of a mito disorder, more than the autism...then exclaimed, gee, maybe I should test all my autistic patients?....a sign of mercury poisoning folks...and or the combined factor of X Link disorder, and then an environmental trigger...me thinks so...
In March we plan to do a follow up, this time, I get tested, just like Hannah's mom.
