Vaccine Court: Hepatitis B Shot Caused MS

How Important is Hepatitis B Vaccination at Birth?

Ian 1 Managing Editor's Note: Below is the tale of Ian Gromowski, a boy who lived 47 days after his at birth Hepatitis B vaccination. Thank you to his mom Deanna for sharing her agonizing story with us. I am proud that Age of Autism is here to publicize stories like Ian's. (And there are many more stories. I'm thinking of a darling girl in NJ named Gianna who succumbed to her vaccinations.) Autism One Radio featured Ian's story last week. Download Deanna GromowskiFINAL

Deanna and her husband have a healthy baby boy named Vance. Deanna is now battling thyroid cancer. You can read more of Ian's story here: www.iansvoice.org

By Deanna Gromowski

There are days I cannot believe what happened to my son Ian Larsen Gromowski.

It almost seems as though it was a bad, horrible nightmare that I cannot wake up from.  My name is Deanna Gromowski and I am just a mom.

Ian born

I live in Wisconsin and have a bachelor’s degree in Psychology  from UW-Milwaukee and my husband Scott has his bachelor’s degree in Sports Management from UW-LaCrosse.  I work in Human Resources and he decided to get a 2nd degree in Fire Science and is now a full-time fire fighter.  We dated for 3 years and then got engaged and a year later married in Hawaii in 2005.  We decided to hold off on children for the first year to enjoy married life.

We ‘did everything right in life’, we planned and prepared and educated ourselves about all our major life decisions.

Then June 25, 2007 and our son Ian was born completely healthy.  Well, there was a slight mishap at birth and it is very common.  Ian swallowed meconium (his stool) as he came through the birth canal.  He was originally brought back to our room with us, but then the nurses noticed he was having trouble breathing.

The meconium is like tar and it was in his lungs.  So Ian was admitted to the NICU, discharged the next day to our room, but yet again went back because he hadn’t worked all of the meconium out quite yet.  Scott and I were worried, as new parents, who wouldn’t be, but we knew it was common and we were told this many times.  Some babies need 2 to 3 weeks to work the meconium out of their lungs.

Ian was having a hard time getting this tar worked out, but you cannot imagine our JOY when the doctors told us on his 5th day of life, June 30th, 2007, that he would be able to go home.  All he needed was his hearing test and his Hepatitis B vaccination.

Moms kiss

We couldn’t wait for both of them to happen so we could go home.  Looking back Scott and I get frustrated because we weren’t really given an option about the vaccine.  We were told to sign a form (in which we were not given any instructions on vaccines) and I remember it seemed strange because the form we signed didn’t have an area for a parent signature, the nurse had to physically write in “Parents Signature” and “draw a line”.  Hardly seems professional or right, but I signed it anyway.   I look back on that form to date and still get sick to my stomach.

Dads kiss

Ian was given his Hepatitis B vaccination on July 1st, 2007 even though he was fighting off the meconium, even though he had a fever ABOVE 100 degrees on June 30th, and even though he had a fever above 100 degrees the day of July 1st they STILL VACCINATED HIM.  It states on the Center for Disease Control (CDC) website this : “Some people should not get hepatitis B vaccine or should wait.

Ian dying

Anyone with a life-threatening allergy to baker’s yeast, or to any other component of the vaccine, should not get hepatitis B vaccine. Tell your provider if you have any severe allergies.

• Anyone who has had a life-threatening allergic reaction to a previous dose of hepatitis B vaccine should not get another dose.

• Anyone who is moderately or severely ill when a dose of vaccine is scheduled should probably wait until they recover before getting the vaccine. Your provider can give you more information about these precautions..”

Ians face 4

So how are parent’s to know if their child is allergic to baker’s yeast?  Do you want to just risk it?  I would consider Ian moderately ill because he was in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and still had a fever.  Shouldn’t the experts know this information.  Isn’t it there job?  Well, that is all hindsight and immediately after Ian was vaccinated the following happened:

Ian mom and dad

FACT: After receiving the Hepatitis B shot these symptoms also appeared:

• Platelets dropped from 248,000 to 131,000 – severe thrombocytopenia
• Scalded-like rash appeared
• Seizures noted
• Irritable, crying non-stop
• Stopped eating
• Viral-like symptoms

His pictures speak a million words.  Within 12 hours of his vaccination he had the rash, within 24 hours the severe thrombocytopenia set in, and then he was in a fatal state from then on.  NO DOCTORS, NURSES, STAFF would even consider the vaccination as the source.

Ian rash 3

Nothing else happened, no medicines of any kind because he was supposed to be going home!  It even lists on the CDC website that 1 in 1.1 million have a severe reaction and on the Merck website it indicates that thrombocytopenia is a typical reaction of a person with a vaccine reaction.  Why didn’t they know this?  Why wouldn’t they consider the vaccination?  It is possible.  It even states so on the form from the CDC that they were SUPPOSED to give us and didn’t!!

Ian lived for 47 days.  My son suffered nearly his entire life.  Look at the pictures.  Imagine watching your child going through this pain and not being able to do anything.  No one would listen to us….we are just parents, what do we know?  We didn’t leave his side for one moment.  We lived at the hospital, literally.  I couldn’t save my first born son, I couldn’t make the ‘ouchie’ better.  I sat there day in and day out and watched this vaccination destroy his organ one at a time.

But I want you to know that Ian was an old soul.  He had a peaceful presence about him.  He received edema massages 2 times a day for his swelling and he loved it!  The therapists said most babies in his situation do not do well with massages, but he was relaxed, peaceful, and accepting.  He fought so hard.  He is the strongest person Scott and I have ever met.  He took our admiration to a level we didn’t know existed in the world.  He was and is our little Sunshine, but more importantly he is OUR HERO.

We now are blessed with another son, Vance.  Vance shares his brother’s blonde hair and has blue eyes that glisten like the sky.   Vance is almost 6 months old and Vance is not vaccinated yet.  Pending on the future of vaccines, we don’t know if he ever will be.  Hopefully Ian’s story will touch the lives of others including people who care for children.  His case is not as rare as one would think.

I would like to echo the advice given in another comment here by Kim Davis: always make sure that someone you know and trust is with your baby at all times.

It's common practice to give the Hep B at birth, even against the parents' wishes and/or written instructions.

I personally know a woman to whom this happened. Her son survived, but has autism.

Wow...... I am fighting back the tears as I take in your experience and heartache. I completely agree with you that the medical providers and CDC should inform parents of the dangers involved with immunization. Why do they insist on vaccinating babies and children that are fighting off any illness? They are ridiculously confident and ignorant to a Parents true instinct. Your son Ian will be in heaven watching over you and your family. Keep his faith alive by sharing your story every day and potentially save another life in the future. God Bless you.

Pamela

I would love your feedback.

I posted an earlier comment with our daughter's story. She had a rash very similar to Ian's, though less severe by comparison (see the last picture shown in Ian's story) and symptoms that included constant crying, extreme irritability, and very poor sleep during her first few weeks of life.

I have posted pictures of Amelia at birth and two days old at my blog, http://theeducatedparent.blogspot.com/.

I would love to know how many readers share a similar experience. We always believed that Hep B was our daughter's first vaccine injury.

I would also love to hear from anyone who DID NOT allow the Hep B vaccine at birth, yet who might have also seen a similar rash.

That first photo tells the whole story. I'm so sad for this family that it's hard to put it into words. What is this terrible system which turns nurses into executioners and rips children away, then covers it all up? I think the entire medical profession must be going mad from the sheer amount they have to deny.

The generosity of this family in sharing this story and the warning is staggering. I can only offer my heartfelt condolences and thanks for their acts of bravery and to add that their second son is one of the luckiest children alive to have parents like this.

Nalene

Thank you for sharing your story.
My heart broke looking at the photos. I'm at work crying. I hope you share your story with anyone you can.
None of my children have been diagnosed with autism. But, because of websites like this, I am educating myself taking every precaution in the best interest/heath of my 7 month old son.

Gabriella True

My prayers are with you. I am heartbroken for you. Thank you for sharing your family's story. I have put a link of my facebook page to help further educate and spread this message. Blessings.

Deanna, I am so sorry for what happened to your son. Thank you for sharing what Ian went through as it gives us even more reason to keep fighting for the safety of our most vulnerable; our children.
Bensmyson- I have seen lots of anecdotal stuff, I think at the NVIC site about crib death and hep b and dpt shots. I really think the coroners know a lot more than they are saying on this issue. It is criminal that they are not.

I first saw the story of this family last week and the images have been swirling around in my head ever since.
No one is being protected by vaccinating against HepB at birth, NO ONE.
I want to know why this story was not headline news on every major news show.
There are many who proclaim that they do things and say things so that one person might be saved. Ian's reaction to the vaccine should have stopped its continued use for any more children cold.
What the hell are we doing to our children.
Bless this family and their Angel child.

Pamela

Reading Ian's story today and seeing the pictures broke my heart all over again. I first learned about Ian through Angela Warner and we both shared how we would never be the same.

Your story really hit home for me. Our daughter Amelia had a VERY similar rash to Ian's when we brought her home from the hospital...though very mild by comparison.

I always suspected that the Hep B at birth had been her first vaccine injury. We suspect chicken pox was another and know that she suffered injury from the flu vaccine at two as well.

I thought the rash was just baby acne...but she had typical baby acne at eight weeks and it looks very, very different. And like Ian, she had the clearest most beautifully healthy complexion at birth.

In addition to the rash she looked absolutely miserable. She had an angry, miserable expression on her face, cried constantly and didn't sleep for more that an hour at a time for several weeks.

I'll never forget, at around 10 weeks, she seemed to "see" me for the first time. It was the first time that I thought my baby connected with me...she actually reached up and grabbed my face with both hands. I cried and told my husband, "Amelia just connected with me. It was like she saw me for the first time" I was a new Mom and didn't realize that this was not normal.

My second child has not been vaccinated. He had typical baby acne at eight weeks as well but nothing like the rash Amelia had. He was a happy infant. He knew his Mommy from the beginning and never did I feel like "Oh, he finally connected with Mommy." He was always connected with the world around him.

Comparing the rash that Amelia had with Ian's makes me wonder just how many children are having milder forms of the more severe reaction that poor Ian endured.

Deanna, thank you for sharing Ian's story. I can't imagine what your family has been through.

I am going to work on loading Amelia's pictures at my blog today. I would love feedback on whether readers agree that the rash looks similar and if other parents had a similar experience with their babies. My blog is The Educated Parent, theeducatedparent.blogspot.com

Dear Ian's family- I am so very sad for your tragic loss. No one and certainly no baby should be made to suffer like your story.

I cannot understand why the 13 cases of measles (with no permanent damage and certainly no deaths) made headline news across the U.S. and this story -- I read about it only here. I don't understand our media. Ian's story must be heard.

With deepest condolences,
The Ackerman family

Adrienne

Deanna,
I am so sorry for your loss. The fact that you can share Ian's story is inspirational. It is an outrage that the medical staff repeatedly assured you that the Hep B vaccine was not the cause of Ian's systemic reaction. My eldest received his Hep B series. Since his diagnosis we have seen three different (new) pediatricians. Two of them asked me if he received SPECIFICALLY the Hep B series beginning at birth. I don't believe for a second that there's not a known reaction to Hep B in the medical community. And doctors wonder why, as parents, we've drifted away from mainstream medicine in the effort to recover our children...

Kim Davis

Deanna,

Thank you for sharing your story. I can't imagine how hard it would be to lose a child. I am so very sorry for the loss of your beautiful son.

Know that sharing Ian's story WILL help others to make better, more informed decisions.

Just yesterday a mother to be asked my advice about new born interventions, such as the Hep B, Vit K shot and eye ointment.

I advised her to not only refuse the shot on all paperwork, but to make sure there was someone with her baby at all times.

Someone like you told me how dangerous and unnecessary the Hep B shot was for newborns. Your story will help many others.

God Bless You,

Kim

Rene

What an angel. I just cannot say how sorry I am, Deanna.

Laura

Deanna,

Thank you so much for sharing your heartbreaking story. I am horrified by your experience, though not at all surprised, given my daughter's reaction to all three Hep B vaccines and what it is still doing to her today. What is unthinkable though is how many medical professionals mindlessly chant the mantra: "it wasn't the vaccines. Vaccines are safe. Now let's give her another one you young, new, inexperienced mother that is paranoid for no reason."

My daughter was hospitalized after each of her Hep B vaccines. She suffered a rash from head to toe each time and vomited for days, exhibiting signs of infection and UTI with no source of the infection ever found. I believe it is what precipitated her subsequent mitochondrial disease, causing her to be so sick through her four years so far. I didn't know any better - they said vaccine and I thought "I got vaccines as a kid, so that's what you do with kids." My ignorance has caused so much guilt and it hangs on me like a wet blanket. How are we supposed to know if our two day or ten day old baby has a yeast allergy? Or a mitochondrial disease or an autoimmune disease? We can't. And neither can they. It seems criminal almost.

nhokkanen

Deanna, I am so sorry for your what happened to your son Ian. Thank you for sharing your family's pain and sadness, and information on how the vaccine injury occurred.

So far the UK authorities have surprisingly not succumbed to the folly of universal infant Hep B vaccination, althought there are attempts every few months at a relaunch by the WHO or by the industry, and latterly by the British Medical Association from both of former (insofar as they are distinct entities). The BMA initiative was headed in British Medical Journal by Andrew J Pollard, Oxford Vaccine Group, Department of Paediatrics, University of Oxford, Children's Hospital - who made the following magnificent declaration:

"Competing interests: AJP conducts clinical trials on behalf of Oxford University, sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline Vaccines, Novartis Vaccines, Sanofi Pasteur, Sanofi Pasteur MSD, and Wyeth Vaccines and has received funds from vaccine manufacturers to attend scientific meetings. The University of Oxford has received unrestricted grants for educational meetings organised by AJP. Industry sourced honorariums for lecturing or writing are paid directly to an independent charity or an educational/administrative fund held by the department of paediatrics, University of Oxford."

http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/335/7627/950

He was supported in Rapid Responses by Jane Zuckerman (believed to be daughter of Arie Zuckerman, the head of the Royal Free Medical School, who fell out with Andrew Wakefield). She gave an equally illuminating declaration:

"Competing interests: JZ has been reimbursed by several manufacturers of vaccines and antimalarial prophylaxis, including GlaxoSmithKline, Novartis, Sanofi - Pasteur, SBL Vaccines, and Wyeth, for attendance at conferences, running educational programmes, and undertaking clinical trials, and has received unrestricted educational grants."

Pride of place must, however, go to the response of Marc Girard 'Being or Not Being an Idiot':

"Although, thanks to the pharmaceutical industry, physicians have the privilege of pertaining to a profession including no less than 28% of “consultants” (most of the remaining operating as “investigators”, “experts”, “opinion leaders” and all that sort of persons), thousands of hours of work on the hepatitis B vaccination inclined me (in overall accordance with some others) to the sad conclusion that a vast majority of our colleagues are definitely unable to pass an autonomous judgement on the quality of a study, whereas a vast majority of the remaining small minority fails to do so most probably due to lack of time: while since its public communiqué of Feb 2000, the French Agency (which is certainly not suspect of excessive criticism against this vaccination, its producers or their experts) has concluded that the results of a study by Zipp et al should be no less than “rejected” due to failures some of them should be obvious at first sight, eminent scholars in that field go on quoting it as a relevant reference in the debate on the vaccine toxicity.

"Therefore, I have tried to develop an original alternative to Evidence- Based Medicine, namely an “Idiot’s Guide to Epidemiology” in reference to the well-known series of books on computing. Let’s illustrate by an example. Fifteen years ago, just prior to the French campaign of vaccination against hepatitis B, a medical doctor like me (even practising as a “consultant”, s’il vous plaît) could have never seen a patient with multiple sclerosis (MS); today, ask any non health professional in France – a butcher, a trader, a clerk, a lawyer, a concierge, a gardener, a rep of a pharmaceutical firm: almost everybody knows one or several cases of MS in people around him/her… This does not deserve a Nobel price to guess than when a change in health environment is so dramatic, the most likely cause may be the irruption of an exogenous factor – a drug, for example: just recall the precedents of phocomelia after thalidomide introduction or pulmonary hypertension with Aminorex®.
This democratic experience of a sharp increase in the frequency of MS may be easily correlated with harder data: whereas the total number of French MS was less to 30 000 according to the last assessment available prior to the vaccination campaign, it was at least 60 000 in the first one delivered after the campaign, and a number of sources (e.g. from patients associations) give now figures close to 80 000-90 000. Interestingly enough, the French health authority – which strongly supported the vaccination campaign in 1994 – did not order any serious investigation about such a frightening human, medical as well as economical epidemics, contending itself with the vague argument that this increase would simply be an artefact due to an increase in the accuracy of diagnosis procedures… However, as due to media coverage concerning the neurological hazard of hepatitis B vaccines, the requirement to make a diagnosis of MS became stronger and stronger in France (several attacks, positive RMI, etc.), it is clear that if the real frequency had been stable, the assessed frequency should have decreased, and certainly not increased…

"So, let’s try a more reasonable explanation. In its public communiqués, the French Agency always contended that if the neurological risk of vaccination “could not be excluded, it was small” – an assessment, by the way, which is notoriously devoid of any scientific meaning. Only in a recent publication, tried some of its experts to be more precise about this “smallness”, admitting that the relative risk should not be higher than a 3-fold increase – by the way an assessment strangely parallel to that by Hernan et al, and perfectly consistent with the assertion by the main persons in charge of the epidemiological studies performed on behalf of the French Agency who admitted that US as well as French data were consistent with an “epidemiologically important increase in risk”. With an recognized proportion of half of the French population exposed to hepatitis B vaccination, a background noise of less than 30 000 spontaneous MS in the overall population should have led to about 15 000 expected cases in those exposed to this vaccination (30 000 * 0.5). A 3- fold increase in risk (according to Hernan et al’s expectations 9 reluctantly confirmed by the experts of the French Agency 8 10) should thus have led to an observed number of 15 000*3 = 45 000 cases of MS in the vaccinated sub-population; added to the 15 000 expected cases in the sub-population not exposed to the vaccine, this should account (according to the “Idiot’s Guide for Arithmetic”) for a total of 60 000 cases (45 000 + 15 000) after the vaccination campaign, as exactly reflected by the most official estimates of French governmental experts, some of them directly involved in re-assuring investigations on this vaccination.

"Due to fluctuations in current estimates, potential excess up to a total of 90 000 MS could obviously be ascribable to the additional fact that, due to vaccination of health professionals – mandatory in its principle, but unequal in its application towards lower socio-economical status (nurses, nursing auxiliaries, cleaning ladies) of high female prevalence – the “universal vaccination” has been relatively more frequent in the young female population, where the baseline incidence of MS comes to its peak, therefore accounting for an additional increase in the absolute number of cases on the basis of a 3-fold increase in risk. A small checking according to the elementary principles of arithmetic: such a frightening surge in MS prevalence is perfectly consistent with another admission by the governmental experts, namely that the number of cases spontaneously reported after hepatitis B vaccination was higher than the expected cases. Having regard to the known scale of underreporting in France, this admission cannot be less than the confession of an unprecedented drug-induced epidemic.

"As compared to the UK, whose population is approximately the same as in France but with a higher prevalence of expected MS, and having regard to the failure of the “universal” campaign which failed to reach more than half of the French population, it can be hypothesized that a successful universal campaign in that country could, in the long term, account for a minimum of 60 000 vaccination-induced MS (to say nothing about the others hazards of this vaccination, such as lupus, myelitis, thyroid diseases, chronic fatigue, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, etc.). To discuss the benefit/risk of “universal childhood immunisation”, these figures should be put in perspective with the expected number of significant complications of hepatitis B within the same country – esp. in non migrants, where the disease is generally benign and self-limited. However, I missed to find this baseline parameter in the BMA’s “call for universal childhood immunisation in the UK”

"As we say on this side of the Channel: “c’est trop idiot !” (that’s so silly)… "

Deanna I am so sorry to hear about the horrible reaction to the hep-b vaccine. My oldest went into resp. distress, seized, and died numerous times 40 min after the hep-B vaccine. She was saved by transfusions, resperators, and antiseizure meds. She had to have a lumbar puncture on day 3 of life to reduce the cerebral edema so it wouldnt herniate her brain stem into her spine. After 10 days in nicu she was transported back to the origional hosp and finally came home. I wish so badly that your beautiful baby had recieved proper medical care after his adverse reaction. I was origionally told that my daughter must have had pnemonia but the staff at the origional hosp assured me her lungs were clear. When I had my second child no-one said anything he was continually congested and sometimes gasping for air the entire time he was being vaccinated. An mri revealed herniation of the brain into the spine..........Had someone been honest enough to tell me the hep-b had caused my daughters problems my son would have never had it but they allowed the child to suffer vaccine indused neurological issues to protect the vaccine program.
I don't know when this child abuse and experimentation will stop but I hope when it does all involved get life sentances.

bensmyson

We were never presented with any forms for us to sign authorizing the HepB and when I looked across the room and saw the nurse with the needle about to poke my son I nearly lost my mind and yelled at her to stop, which she did. However on my son's vaccine card it states that he received the vaccine at the hospital.

Are there any studies on the relationship between SIDS and the HepB vaccine?

Diane Farr

I clearly remember the day that I became a different person. It wasn't when I got my first son's diagnosis of autism. It was when I decided to research each vaccine and make decisions for my second son. I started with the Hep B. I cried through a whole box of kleenex. I found out that the year before 94 babies never left the hospital because they died of the Hep B shot. I became a bitter and cynical person. No longer, care free and positive.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Deanna Please remember that there are many of us fighting for future children. Your story will keep us going.

Andrea

Dear Deanna,

I am so sorry for your and your husband's loss. Words can't express my heart break for what poor little Ian had to go through.

My daughter also swallowed her meconium. When the doctor broke my water they knew this is what happened. After birth she seemed ok, but developed a fever and was admitted to the Neo-natal unit. She ended up staying there for a week. She was given Gentromycin- which is a powerful anti-biotic. She also had jaundice.

I read your son's story and realize she was spared an additional insult. She did not receive the Hep B vaccine because our pediatrician felt since she would not be in daycare, she did not need that vaccine. Hearing your story, I would say that decision defintely spared her more harm, possibly saved her life.

I can't understand why pediatricians feel it is so important to give these hour old infants this vaccine? ESPECIALLY, infants who are already fighting infections and other health problems. Why do they think that these powerful vaccines only do good and not cause additional harm and stress?

When my son was born, again the doctor felt Hep-B was not necessary. And my son was also spared. Eventually, he would succumb to "too many too soon" and he now suffers from autism and a dysfunctional immune system. He did get the Hep-B after he was diagnosed since he was going to be in developmental play groups and I was told he might be put at risk. Both, he and his sister got the 3 shot series, but they were older then, not hours old like poor Ian.

Ian was such a beautiful boy. Thank you for sharing your painful story with us. Take great care of little Vance. And take good care of yourself.

Stagmom

Some people will accuse us of being maudlin or using Ian's death to promote our "anti-vaccine" position. That's horsepucky (thank you JB.) The point is that vaccines, like the diseases they prevent (don't jump ugly on me, this is simply a comment) can be DEADLY.

Like, Deanna, I have the piece of paper I signed authorizing the Hep B for Gianna. They never told me WHY I needed to sign consent and in my post birth haze, it never occured to me to ask if there was any danger. They rely on our ignorance to promote the program.

Offit and AAP and ECBT love to throw hideous photos of children covered in measles at us - to frighten us. Tit for tat.

chrissie

I'm just so sorry.

Oh Deanna. Just your story is enough for this vaccine to never be given at birh. My heart and prayers go out to your family. You strength in sharing your story is truly courageous.
What is happening to our world? How can this be the beginning of any perfect life? I'm crying too hard to continue.

God be with you.

Deanna, Thank you for sharing your story about your beautiful angel, Ian. This is an OUTRAGE. Why, WHY are we giving newborns a vaccine for a sexually transmitted disease at birth? It doesn't make ANY sense to me.

From the CDC's website on how you can contract Heb b:
Transmission: Contact with infectious blood, semen, and other body fluids from having sex with an infected person, sharing contaminated needles to inject drugs, or from an infected mother to her newborn.

When will we (society at large) STAND UP and change these wild practices???
There should never be another family who buries their baby because of a vaccine injury. There should never be another family, like mine, who spends their life savings and works round the clock trying to give their vaccine injured child a shot at a decent future.
