David Kirby on HuffPo: NIH Agency Head: Vaccine-Autism Research is “Legitimate”

Too legit By David Kirby

A major health official within the United States Government today endorsed more research into possible links between vaccination and autism, saying that such studies are “legitimate.”

The official, Dr, Duane Alexander, Director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), an NIH agency, said scientists must investigate susceptible subpopulations of children, including kids with mitochondrial disorders and those who have trouble metabolizing mercury...

To AA-
Oh I fully recognize that Austin is not a neutral area and that we have to fight just as hard here as anywhere else. I was simply giving the reporter a nudge by pointing out David's current post on Huffington Post and encouraging a new article by her about Bailey Banks since she was so gung ho on reporting the 3 Omnibus decisions out a couple of weeks ago. Seems she didn't want to write about the Bailey case though...imagine that.

Kecia,

Austin is not a neutral locale, despite Wakefield's presence here. It's home of Immunize Texas and Governor Goodhair Perry that pushed the HPV vaccine to the point of mandate. Didn't get far, because grassroots here are pretty strong...

The Statesman is a horrible newspaper, I stopped reading it more than a decade ago and I'm not the only one.

I am sort of in agreement with Maggie.

"Love ya' David, but I don't believe in the susceptible subgroup. I think these vaccines are defective not the children. I don't believe the government will ever find the "susceptible subgroup" because it doesn't exist. Vaccines vary from one manufacture to the next and one lot to the next. I think the children who got sick got defective vaccines."

I was watching a re-run of 2 1/2 Men the other night...Taterhead is our Love Child". Charlie became worried he may have inadvertantly fathered a child by one of his former girls. Full of question in the product he had been using to prevent just such an occurance, he went to visit his pharmacist from whom he bought condoms in bulk. He questioned....weren't they 100% safe and effective? The pharmacist responded, "Whenever you're dealing with a manufactured product, there's always gonna be flaws in the process."

Maybe children that regress after vaccines are somehow more susceptible. Maybe not.

Ray - Thanks for your perspective. Time will tell if Alexander has had an true epiphany or is just playing good cop bad cop. He has been the Director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development since 1986.... Lets see what he does now.

He talks about studying "gene-environment factor interactions", but I would like to know how much environmental factors were part of the design of this research, or if we are just seeing a re-branding of more genetics research. We'll know if we start seeing the same studies referred to as gene-clean coal research.

Maggie

Love ya' David, but I don't believe in the susceptible subgroup. I think these vaccines are defective not the children. I don't believe the government will ever find the "susceptible subgroup" because it doesn't exist. Vaccines vary from one manufacture to the next and one lot to the next. I think the children who got sick got defective vaccines. But, if the government ever does the research to prove me wrong, I'll listen. But, I think they already know the answer, hence the refusal to do the research. It's the vaccines, not the genetics.

Hi Kecia,

Thanks for the article. I do understand: The debate is not over.

Take care,

Answer from the Journalist responsible for the scathing article in the Austin Statesman a couple of weeks ago. I think she could give a shit...like most other reporters out there these days.

What do you know!!!!

I went to the NIH in September 1997 to see Marie Bristol Power about funding for Drs. Vijendra Singh and Jim Oleske regarding immunology research and autism. Dr. Singh, two associates of Dr. Oleske and Dr. Rimland were with me. Duane Alexander was Marie's boss. I saw Duane Alexander again in 2001 or 2002 at another NIH meeting. He seems to be entrenched at the NIH as a career NIH person but never helped me or other parents regarding immunology research or vaccine link to autism.

So lots of luck in getting any change with the NIH and Duane Alexander!!!! With him and the NIH, it is change you CAN'T BELIEVE IN when you want anything done about a vaccine link to autism or funding independent immunology research on autism.

Jack's Dad

Aside from autism, these kids should be compensated by the government for traumatic brain injury (TBI). After the MMR, my son Jack - who was perfectly healthy before that -- suffered from dementia, lost all his words and the ability to eat with utensils. After more than two years of therapy, I have him back. Sound familiar??? That's called a brain injury. The MMR is the roadside bomb of pediatrics.

-For TC
I sent a link to the article to the reporter that wrote the piece for the Austin Statesman this morning. I'll let you know if I hear back or not.

Holly M.

Hope to see 50,000 of those kids whom were never-vaccinated. Otherwise, it's just another crap study.

Julie Swenson

Thank goodness for a voice of reason coming out of the government.

QUICK - someone send this to the Austin Statesman!!
