Happy Hanukkah from Age of Autism Where Miracles Matter

Hanukkah Happy Hanukkah!  If you aren't familiar with this holiday, read this description to see why we might want to consider changing the puzzle piece to a candle.

Hanukkah -- the eight-day festival of light that begins on the eve of Kislev 25 -- celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, of purity over adulteration, of spirituality over materiality.

More than twenty-one centuries ago, the Holy Land was ruled by the Seleucids (Syrian-Greeks), who sought to forcefully Hellenize the people of Israel. Against all odds, a small band of faithful Jews defeated one of the mightiest armies on earth, drove the Greeks from the land, reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and rededicated it to the service of G0d.

When they sought to light the Temple's menorah, they found only a single cruse of olive oil that had escaped contamination by the Greeks; miraculously, the one-day supply burned for eight days, until new oil could be prepared under conditions of ritual purity.

To commemorate and publicize these miracles, the sages instituted the festival of Hanukkah.

Happy Hanukkah to everyone! This is a wonderful time of year, with so many of the religious holidays in convergence. Just now my son saw the book illustration above and said, "Hey -- we have that book at our library!" He then started singing The Dredyl Song, and complained that I misspelled it as "Dreidel." Not too bad for a Lutheran kid on the spectrum.

I am Greek Orthodox and our family has very
Strong faith. It is what has gotten us through
Our toughest journey yet; autism.

While I can appreciate the point being made
By the celebration of this Jewish holiday, it is
Also important to know there are other religious
Faiths out there that are never noted or in this
Cases noted in a negative light. I realize we
Can't change history however let's not only
Focus on one main religion and disregarding
The rest. Perhaps something more neutral
To include all faiths would have been more
Appropriate without offending other religions.

Happy Holidays to ALL. Our faith will get us
Through the autism maze......

Happy Hannukah - may the light shine in the darkness for our kids this year!

Gatogorra, I've always wondered why I found the symbolic autism puzzle piece so irksome. I think you've nailed it.

I love the way your mind works.

Happy Hannukah. My dad, raised Irish Catholic, loved Hannukah, the sybolism, the rites. We used to go to temple with my parents' friends when I was a kid.

I think the candle as a symbol is preferable to the puzzle pieces. Here's my view on it: if a symbol doesn't make Paul Offit's and Julie Gerberding's respective blood pressures go up, the emblem isn't conveying our community's message.

The puzzle as a symbol of mystery is, at this point, kind of a pretense: there's not that much mystery left. There's only a few "pieces" missing from that "puzzle" in terms of research confirmation and one of them is simply funding for the vax/never vaxed study and another is mainstream acknowledgement of incontrovertible links to environmental factors. Those who use the puzzle symbolism most (ahem, AS) are the entities which refuse to acknowledge when each subsequent "piece" is virtually solved.

Awesome idea about the Easy Bake. My NT daughter wants one of those new cupcake makers--Jakks Pacific Girl Gourmet Cupcake Maker. You've got two product lines to tap into for GFCF items now. Siblings can be empowered to help :)

Kelli--you continue to crack me up! I found my Jenny Doll waaaay at the bottom of a bin of childhood memories I still have. She has hacked up hair and big crack on her forehead. My kids still want to play with her now after all these years. They asked what happened to Jenny's head so I told them she had a concussion. They treated her gently after a pretend trip to the doctor. They've learned how to be better doctors than some of the ones we have taken Ronan to!

Michele - I just googled it. (easy bake oven recipes + gluten free) Several pages came up.

Kelli Ann - I was also a little freaked out when she unwrapped it. (It came from her aunt.) But after all the gifts had be opened (and there are way too many as far as I'm concerned....how did this turn into THIS?) she help up the Easy Bake and said, "Mommy, look at this present." For a kid who couldn't speak two years ago, I'll take the language AND the excitement. Let the baking begin!

Ahhh...now there's a *blast from the past* -- the good 'ole, let-me-use-you-as-a-guinea-pig-and-I-hope-you-don't-die-in-the-process, every-parent-masters-the-use-of-a-fake-smile-while-wanting-to-throw-up,and-asking-for-seconds-is-not-a-viable-option-if-you-want-to-live EASY BAKE OVEN!!

Everything I learned about cooking started with that nifty little gadget and here's two words of wisdom to every parent who never got one as a child and plans on buying one for their own: QUICK, RUN [while you can]

I just wish my Chatty Cathy had survived as well as my Easy Bake Oven did. But with two big brothers on the scene it didn't take long for all her hair to be chopped off with scissors. Alas, one of the first "talking dolls" with no hair. A definite *keeper* -- NOT.

Diane-
where did you find the gfcf recipes for easy bake?? would love the link!

I find Hanukkah a VERY relevant holiday and I'm a Born Again Christian. I can't think of anything more relevant than a holiday that celebrates God can keep the oil going and is willing to do so.

As an autistic myself I ponder how He did it. As Teilhard DeChardin said, "research is the highest form of adoration." To desire to know the mind of God is the most sincere form of worship for someone like me with a logical brain. The Hanukkah oil rapid replication is similar to other biological replication miracles He did including the multiplication of the loaves and the fishes and Elijah's similar oil miracle in the Old Testament. Rapid acceleration of stem cell growth by adding His own energy perhaps? Oil is an organic substance. Google "algae + oil" for an eye full. It is possible now to grow algae out of oil and commercial production is now less than 5 years away. It will be carbon neutral as the algae takes in as much carbon as the oil will give off when it burns. Oil may not be the best way to power an engine but it is what we have NOW, and forcing poor and struggling middle class people to buy new cars any time soon is not a compassionate option.

Diane

I must add....I just found a bunch of GFCF recipes online for the Easy Bake oven. Now we'll both be happy.

Diane

Thank you. :-)

We celebrated last night with the cousins. Easy Bake ovens should make GFCF mixes. Pass the digestive enzymes!

Beautiful history.
Some of my favorite memories are of living in south Florida as one of few Christian's in my area, and being able to appreciate the Festival of Lights. All the streets in the neighborhood and driveways would be lined with bags of sand and candles. Absolutley BEAUTIFUL. I think it was there, as a child, that I learned to celebrate differences and embrace what was not natural to me, and remember the joy of faith is shown through kindness to others.
Thanks for the history lesson, and you are right, the puzzle piece should be a candle.

Happy Hannukah!!!
