Dear Friends,
I am proud to announce that I have been asked to write a weekly blog for the new website of Spectrum Magazine, the well-respected national magazine dealing with autism issues. My blog is called "mom.notcalm" and I will be posting new ones each Monday. Click HERE to join me.
This week's entry is titled "We Are Going To Find Out What Happened." In part, the blog will be an on-going investigation into what environmental factors caused my son's autism. Hopefully this will provide clues for other parents as well. Please comment if you feel so inclined.
And here is a link to Spectrum's new website HERE.
Hi Barbara,
Congratulations on your weekly blog and I look forward to reading it. I wanted to tell you about a conversation I had with Dr. Bernard Rimland. Dr. Rimland told me when I had the pleasure of speaking to him on the phone way back in 2006 about what caused his son's autism. I had asked Dr. Rimland what do you think happened to your son that might of caused his autism? He replied that when his wife was pregnant with his son in 1956 she ate a can of tuna fish per day through out her pregnancy because way back then they thought fish was healthy for you. Especially, they thought fish was healthy for pregnant women. So, when Dr. Rimland's son was born he cried a lot and did not want to be touched or held. I always thought about his story and wanted to share it with you. Good Luck!
Faith, Love & Hope,
Sandy Waters

Hi Barbara,
I am looking forward to reading your blog. It was a pleasure to meet you and your husband and your handsome boys this past summer at the Surf Pals event in Long Beach. I felt like old friends even though we had just met. Good luck on your journey...we are all on the same one. I still have pictures to send to you. Say hello to your husband from the Lopez Family.

Embracing the Sky kept me company on a long trip recently. It is a very bracing book of poetry. I also think I knew my own son better after I read it.
And Kim thank you for your kind words. All I can say is I try. Danny tries harder.

I am grateful that Barbara Fischkin can share even more of her wit and wisdom with the world. I eagerly look forward to reading anything with her byline.
Another amazing mom whose child with autism has become an adult is Barb Romkema of Iowa. Barb has left no stone unturned in her search for safe biomedical treatments for her son, a poet and author of the book "Embracing the Sky." They both are truly inspiring.
