Obama and McCain Non-Responses to Vaccine Safety Requests

By Rebecca Estepp

In May, I sent out a video of Vaccine Safety Requests to all three Presidential candidates. The rationale behind this video project was to get the Presidential candidates to go on record about vaccine safety.  For those who have not seen the video you can access it HERE.

To refresh memories, here are the two Executive Orders I requested:

The first Executive Order I would like you to consider is within the first 100 days of taking office, would you issue an Executive Order requiring the removal of MERCURY from all vaccines by January 1, 2010?

For the second Executive Order, within 100 days of taking office, would you issue an Order requiring a Moratorium on the addition of new vaccines to the recommended list for children, until the current vaccine schedule can be proven safe?

Since May, several things have changed regarding this project.

Of course, the most obvious change is that Senator Clinton dropped out of the race.  Instead of sending emails and letters and making phone calls to three campaigns I only have to deal with two. This welcomed reduction in work has been dampened by the fact that the Memorial Day deadline came and went without any candidate responding to my challenge.  While disappointing, it was expected.

Good things have occurred too, while in Washington DC for the “Green Our Vaccines Rally,” I was able to meet with the Disability Advisor for the McCain campaign.  The advisor was gracious and listened to my vaccine safety concerns very seriously.  I appreciated the time I was able to spend at the McCain campaign headquarters but I still came away with no answer to my requests.

Immediately following the Rally on June 4th, I went to the headquarters for the Democratic National Committee. Again, I met the Disability Advisor for the Democratic Party. And again, I had a very sympathetic ear.  And yet again, I came away from this meeting with no answers.  I was discouraged, especially since I had to walk through a tornado on the way back to my hotel, but that’s another story.

In an effort to get more exposure for my video, Unlocking Autism and The National Vaccine Information Center invited me to be part of their booth at the Netroots Conference in Austin, Texas.  Netroots is a conference of political bloggers. The Conference had an impressive line up of speakers to include: Al Gore, Howard Dean, Nancy Pelosi, and Ariana Huffington.  It took me a split second to decide that I wanted to be part of this booth.

The day before leaving for Netroots, I received this letter from Barack Obama.

I knew I would bring this letter with me to Austin to show the bloggers that I had been in dialogue with at least one candidate.  I quickly reached out to my contact at the McCain campaign to give them a chance to respond.  In a matter of hours, she sent me this letter:

This was great.  I now had proof that I had been in contact with both Senators and campaigns before leaving for Austin.   When I got to Austin, I saw that Shelley Hendrix Reynolds and Barbara Loe Fisher put together an amazing booth. The booth focused on the themes of vaccine safety and the notion of vaccination choices. Kevin Barry, Theresa Wrangham, Mark Blaxill, Jim Moody, Chris Fisher (Barbara’s son), Paul Arthur and myself were all assembled to work the conference.

At one point during the weekend, my fellow booth workers and I decided to grade the letters that I had received from the candidates. While I was still happy to have received correspondence from both candidates, neither had answered my requests. We thought grading their letters like a school teacher would be a good way of letting them know of their shortcomings.

Barack Obama received an F+ on his letter.  Harsh, I know, but his letter was boiler plate. He acknowledged that autism is a problem and that he had voted in favor of the Combating Autism Act, but his letter lacked a sense of urgency.  More importantly, his letter had nothing to do with the issues I raised brought up in my video.  I did appreciate that his letter was addressed to me, which is why he earned the + in F+.

John McCain’s letter earned a C, even though his letter was written for the Autism Society of America and was not a response to the video I sent him. The reason for Senator McCain’s better grade was that he recognized autism as a “national crisis” and that “the federal government must respond accordingly.” That one sentence distinguished Senator McCain’s letter from Senator Obama’s.

After assigning grades, we put the letters in frames so conference goers could read them easily.  We had many people stop by the booth and comment on the letters and their grades.  I was even able to show the Obama campaigners Senator Obama’s F+.

Netroots was an interesting experience.  Overall there was a mixed reaction to our booth.  Many parents and grandparents of children with autism stopped by and said, “Right on. My child/grandchild was just fine until those vaccinations.” There were attendees who really had an open mind and became educated on the vaccine issue.

I also encountered opposition.  I was called a baby killer by a woman who wore a “Science 2008” political button. I found this so ironic. We were discussing the science of vaccine safety when she launched into her Ad Hominen attack against me. Ms. Science 2008 did not like it when I converted 25 mcg of mercury (the amount of mercury found in most flu shots) into 50,000 ppb mercury (hazardous waste is measured in parts per billion.)  She did not want to hear that anything over 250 ppb was considered hazardous waste by the EPA. I told her that when you do the math 50,000 is the product of 250 x 200. So the majority of flu shots are 200 times more toxic than toxic waste. That’s when I became “a baby killer.”   Later during the weekend, Shelley found out that Ms. Science 2008 had tried to shut down our booth and asked that we be removed from the conference because our message was so vile.  Ms. Science 2008 was not alone. It turns out there were about a half dozen requests for our booth to be removed.

While I did not enjoy being called names, it was at that point that it became apparent to me that our community must educate the masses about vaccine safety. At times, it is not going to be fun.  However, it does not do us good to spread our message back and forth at our own conferences and functions, talk about “preaching to the choir.”  We must educate America.  We must encourage discourse.  It’s not going to be easy and I hope the Vaccine Safety Request Video will have a small part in getting our message out.

I have another meeting scheduled with the McCain campaign this week.  Here is to hoping that I will get further with my Vaccine Safety Requests. As we get closer to the election, I am going to need our community’s help to get answers from Senator McCain and Senator Obama.  I hope I can count on you all.

I have sent both Obama and McCain requests for comment on the 1in150 affected children. I have heard nothing from John McCain, and Obama happily added me to his email list asking for contributions at least once or twice a week.

I fixed the tiny graphic problem by adding a pop up window - phew! Even better than a pdf! Thanks for your patience!

Hi Nancy,

The reason the letters are so small is purely a technical difficulty. I am not trying to hide anything. I scanned in the letters and sent them to AOA. We were unable to make them any bigger. If you or anyone else knows how to make the letters larger, please reply. We were very frustrated about the size of the letters also.

Take care,
Becky

Nancy

I've got to ask - why is the reprint of the letters so small? Even using the tools to enlarge I can hardly read them.-Perhaps it's my age. Since there wasn't much in your article on content (perhaps because there wasn't much) I'd like to be able to read the letters and judge for myself.

Maybe someone ought to ask the Obamas if their girls are fully vaccinated on schedule and if, given the growing reports of side effects, they plan to have them vaccinated with Gardasil. With kids that age they must know families hit by autism.

I agree with Anon, "Don't waste your vote on Dem's or Rep's. See if Paul or Nader will give you an answer." and also Deborah's post on Ron Paul.

Funny...there is what seems to be an apparent "black-out" on the networks and in the newspapers on Ron Paul. Whenever I mention him, the usual reaction is, "...who?" You'd think the three candidates (you know who they are/were) were the only ones.

I encourage everyone to check out Ron Paul's policies, etc., (even though he IS a Rep.) although, it is probably unlikely he will win the presidency anyway. Especially considering the obvious black-out, many people will never even hear about him.

Another Constitutionalist (I LIKE it!)

I am very concerned that no matter what the candidates say they will not follow through and the media will not hold them accountable. I believe Bush agreed to get thimerasol out of vaccines in 2000 but then his party and his leadership tried to exempt vaccine manufacturers from harm PRIOR to 2001 by putting a clause to that effect into the Patriot Act after 9-11. Your efforts are commendable but I am afraid of our groups being used by a candidate who will blatantly lie like Bush, just to get our votes, and I wouldn't put this past McCain either as he is so closely affiliated with Bush. While a candidate who seriously wants to study this first but would eventually come to agree with us may not have a response yet. In other words, how do we make this have teeth? How do we avoid being used by a candidate willing to do doublespeak to get our votes?

Thank you for making this a political issue. The question I'd like to ask both candidates: How are we going to support this generation of Americans with autism when they reach adulthood?
Conservative figures tell us each one of these kids will cost over $3 million. If a new case is diagnosed EVERY 20 MINUTES, shouldn't we be doing everything to stop this disaster?
No one seems to care about the cause of autism, but soon we'll all be talking about the cost of autism.

Consider it a small victory every time someone calls you names. For it is a clear indication that they have neither fact nor logic to back them up.

I always consider name calling a sign of extreme emotional immaturity or an admission that the person has lost the debate.

Becky,

I love the red ink corrections -- totally classic. And the *canned* letter from McCain with the comment to ASA, I mean how tacky is that? Does anyone proof read this stuff before it goes out??

"I was discouraged, especially since I had to walk through a tornado on the way back to my hotel, but that’s another story."

I can't believe you were WALKING through that tornado?? It was crazy. Stan and I were in a meeting in Rayburn when that thing hit and the emergency system kicked in and sounded the warning system with some guy talking in a monotone voice warning us of a tornado and telling us not to leave the building.

At first, I freaked but then I was laughing so hard as Dan relayed a story from years ago and the warning guy yelled, “Leave the building NOW” but then came back on in his monotone voice reminding everyone to calmly exit. Seems Speaker Pelosi was running (she listened to the 1st version) and lost her shoes during the quick ditch.

They came back later and found them still laying there where she had left them.

The relaying of the story (it kept going, and going, and going as other folks in the office added tidbits) was THEE funniest experience I've ever had on Capitol Hill and I’ll never forget it!

But let the record show, if *I* had been OUTSIDE while it was happening, it would have been the worst encounter on Capitol Hill.

Glad you survived the storm - literally!

Deborah

All though this was an excellent effort on the part of everyone, everyone also missed a golden opportunity to speak with the camp of the only man suitable (granted it's not likely he will get it) for the presidency. That man is Dr. Ron Paul. Who BTW does not believe the government should mandate vaccinations and that it should be a parental decision. This coming from a DOCTOR mind you.

Yeah, I know go ahead and roll your eyes. But the truth is McCain is a war mongering carbon copy of the present buffoon that sits in the white house and Obama is just too young and too scary to be president with absolutely no experience other than one term in congress.

Dr. Paul isn't likely to get the presidency however, I do believe there are like minded free thinking individuals (I call them constituionalists and include myself in this group of individuals who understands what is wrong and are prepared to REALLY fix the problems) who will rise for the 2012 elections. THAT individual is very likely going to have Ron Paul at his side either during the campaign itself or as his VP.

We must not forget that where the presidency is concerned there are MANY things besides vaccines and autism that MUST be taken into account.

For anyone interested I wrote a blog on Paul to include links to his voting record and stats on the man. You can find it by going to: http://debstake.wordpress.com.

Great job, Becky!

The sad reality is this: People are indoctrinated, not educated, when it comes to vaccines.

They get angry because it threatens their sense of self to realize that they may be so fundamentally misled or mistaken about it. If you can be wrong about that, what else are you wrong about?

Realizing vaccines aren't all they are cracked up to be is life-changing. It rocks your foundation. Until is happens to you, most people aren't open to that. I know I wasn't.

The only, only way to change the paradigm is educate, educate, educate. And even then, people will still have to come to the conclusion on their own.

Keep up the good work, Beck!

Jack

I think people subconsciously realize that in the end we are questioning their whole way of life.

It's all crap. Everything we've done in the last 50 years. Everything we export (I just heard that with the weak dollar the only companies that are doing well are those that export drugs, cigarette's and soda--nice for America).

It's a tough pill to swallow...that we've poisoned a generation. It says a lot of bad things about us. People just don't want to hear it...which says a lot more bad things about us.

kat23

I cannot understand how, when you break down the numbers on toxic waste, that people don't get it!?! Of course, I don't understand how knowing a substance is the second most toxic substance in the face of the earth, that there are still no red flags for folks. I talked to a radiologist where I work, and she believes that I am completely crazy for worrying about vaccines. After telling her about the Simpsonwood report (and showing it to her), and JG's admittance to the HAC that the studies were flawed adn the info used for them was "uselss", she looked a me and ssaid that I had to trust someone. Yes, trust is something I wish I had, but there was no concern at all to her. When did "do no harm" and true concern for the patient become such a vague notion?

Nicole Raimann

Educating the public is not easy. I've lost friends and there is even "bad blood" between me and some of my own family members. It's so crazy the level of distain that some people have for our community. I don't understand why people cannot have more of an open mind. All we want are cleaner vaccinations and less of them. I don't see how that could be harmful to anyone. When people get so mad at us I wonder what is really going on. Usually, that level of anger is some sort of defense mechanism. As for the candidates stance on the autism epidemic....unless it hits one of them personally, like a grandchild, I don't think we will see the type of answers we are hoping for. I have to believe that in the end (whenever that will be), the truth will come out and vaccines will be safer. As our club gets bigger (as it does every single day), we will have a bigger audience to educate the masses. It's just a shame that this keeps getting worse when it doesn't have to.

Robin Nemeth

Um, it doesn't matter how much I zoom in, I can't read either candidate's letter. I know I'm probably not missing much, but still and all....
