As a parent, people like that infuriate me with how ridiculous they really sound. There is absolutely NO WAY you can justify injecting mercury, aluminum, and formaldehyde, into anyone. If I did this, it would be a criminal act. The law sees administering poisons as an attempted murder. Just because these people have trillions of dollars, that's ignored. But if Joe Average put thimerosal in his wifes coffee, he'd be in jail.
People like this justify it because they are protecting their nest egg, it's money. If they admit this whole thing is a mass human experiment that failed, and they poisoned all our children...their would either be a lynching mob coming or major financial ruin for those involved.
I have no problem looking at the evidence and seeing that this stuff is poison, and poison causes brain damage and death. There see it too, they are covering their own behind.
I am beginning to see that some of these people are doing the devils work. Population control, suppress the masses by making them weak and sick. I always have but one sentence for people like that:
If you think vaccines are so safe, then you first! You get all those shots on the same schedule...go ahead...it won't hurt you, will it?
I notice many doctors and people of his status do not vaccinate their own children. Hmm, why would that be?
I am not sacrificing any lambs under my roof. Let him take all those shots, then we can put his Alzheimer self into a home (this is what mercury does to the adult brain, especially when aluminum is added). Anyone notice a correlation between mass flu vaccination, the elderly and the recent climb in Alzheimer's... these things are not coincidence.
People like this guy are relying on the general populous to be stupid and not make logical connections. They think that as a mom I am not going to notice that my happy, healthy infant, began screaming all night long after he received his 2 month vaccines?? Guess the under estimated some of us.

As I hear it, the likes of him and the vaccine industry are getting scared. Now that we can actually prove physical damage, and because people are asking questions and most of all, hurting their pocketbooks. More and more parents are refusing to get these shots. We are getting to them!!

How fitting that I read this garbage right after I was discharged from the hospital last night.

I have had an abdominal incisional hernia since September (well, multiple I just learned) and awoke in extreme pain Wednesday morning. I went to our local ER, thinking I may have a strangulation causing the pain.

In the ER, both the doctor who examined me, and the surgeon both asked "what is Primary Immunodeficiency" and "how did you get it?" I was surprised that these apparently wise physicians had never heard of primary immunodeficiency.

(Luckily, I do not have a strangulation, but I have multiple hernias, and will need a mesh about 8 inch square to repair them. But I have to get my immune system stabalized before they will perform the surgery, so I was discharged and asked to follow up with my immunologist.)

The ignorance of everyone in the hospital from doctors to nurses regarding PID made me want to scream, but not nearly as much as this idiot's article. They did not even have an immunologist on staff at the hospital, and had to consult an oncologist!

I wonder if Offit even knows about primary immunodeficiency, and could spot it in a 2 month old before injecting that infant with his live virus vaccine? Does he know that his vaccine can kill these children, as they should be contraindicated for ALL live virus vaccines?

He sickens me to the core.

I only hope that some immunologist will call him on it, and ask why he thinks that "children with such deficiencies are particularly susceptible to infections, it is recommended that they receive all vaccines."

I just THANK GOD he is not my daughter's physician. Offit would have killed her by now.

There is a worldwide increasing concern over the neurological risks of thimerosal (ethylmercury thiosalicylate) which is an organic mercury compound that is commonly used as an antimicrobial preservative. In this study, we show that thimerosal, at nanomolar concentrations, induces neuronal cell death through the mitochondrial pathway. Thimerosal, in a concentration- and time-dependent manner, decreased cell viability as assessed by calcein-ethidium staining and caused apoptosis detected by Hoechst 33258 dye. Thimerosal-induced apoptosis was associated with depolarization of mitochondrial membrane, generation of reactive oxygen species, and release of cytochrome c and apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF) from mitochondria to cytosol. Although thimerosal did not affect cellular expression of Bax at the protein level, we observed translocation of Bax from cytosol to mitochondria. Finally, caspase-9 and caspase-3 were activated in the absence of caspase-8 activation. Our data suggest that thimerosal causes apoptosis in neuroblastoma cells by changing the mitochondrial microenvironment.

Environmental exposure to mercurials continues to be a public health issue due to their deleterious effects on immune, renal and neurological function. Recently the safety of thimerosal, an ethyl mercury-containing preservative used in vaccines, has been questioned due to exposure of infants during immunization. Mercurials have been reported to cause apoptosis in cultured neurons; however, the signaling pathways resulting in cell death have not been well characterized. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify the mode of cell death in an in vitro model of thimerosal-induced neurotoxicity, and more specifically, to elucidate signaling pathways which might serve as pharmacological targets. Within 2 h of thimerosal exposure (5 microM) to the human neuroblastoma cell line, SK-N-SH, morphological changes, including membrane alterations and cell shrinkage, were observed. Cell viability, assessed by measurement of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity in the medium, as well as the 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, showed a time- and concentration-dependent decrease in cell survival upon thimerosal exposure. In cells treated for 24 h with thimerosal, fluorescence microscopy indicated cells undergoing both apoptosis and oncosis/necrosis. To identify the apoptotic pathway associated with thimerosal-mediated cell death, we first evaluated the mitochondrial cascade, as both inorganic and organic mercurials have been reported to accumulate in the organelle. Cytochrome c was shown to leak from the mitochondria, followed by caspase 9 cleavage within 8 h of treatment. In addition, poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) was cleaved to form a 85 kDa fragment following maximal caspase 3 activation at 24 h. Taken together these findings suggest deleterious effects on the cytoarchitecture by thimerosal and initiation of mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis.

"Is it possible that Paul Offit keeps screaming about the innocence of vaccines because he knows that he is not innocent?"

I wonder that too. Who is Offit trying to convince? Surely not us the "anti-vaxers" (sic). We know all about mitochondrial dysfunction and immune over-stimulation and brain inflammation as possibly being interlinked causes/drivers for autism. What about the public - "The Great Unwashed"? Probable - the Poling case (and the second case being withdrawn) seem to have completely disappeared from the major media after about a week.

But why now? Why is Offit taking the offensive now, rather than 3 weeks ago (surely he knew the specifics of the Poling case for months), or 3 weeks for now? Unless perhaps there are a whole lot of parents who are getting their kids mitochondrial function tested before vaccination, and Offit just figured that out (doctor reports?), or.. There is something going on with the new "first" test case, or there is a not-quite-published manuscript along the same lines of the Portugal study that Offit just learned about.

K Fuller, there is an old saying;

"He who professes his innocence the loudest is usually guilty."

The more modern version;

"He who smelt it dealt it."

Is it possible that Paul Offit keeps screaming about the innocence of vaccines because he knows that he is not innocent? This is an educated man. He should be very worried about being held accountable for his rants against the truth. I think Dr. Healy gets it, it is not about the vaccines to prevent childhood illness, it is about preventing the illness in a safe way. Why is that so complicated?

Poor Paul Offitt. He has been wrong about so much for so long and now the Polings case has made him certifiably insane. His crazy proclamations read like a sad Y2K rant. It is over Paul. Polings is only the beginning.

I am utterly disappointed in the NEJM for publishing the article about the Poling case which was authored by Paul Offit.

Offit's conflict of interest is so broad and deep that they should render his comments here irrelevant. One conflict that he failed to mention is that he soon plans to release a book aimed at discrediting parents who believe vaccines were the cause of their children’s ASD.

This mans entire career rests on the SUCCESS of the U.S. vaccine program. One can not assume that his view points are simply based on good science when his career is predicated on vaccine patents, a paycheck from Merck and the sale of books proportion vaccine safety.

His conflict of interest should leave the NEJM with the conclusion that his position on the Poling Case and the state of Public Opinion regarding vaccine safety are inappropriate in a publication with the reputation of the NEJM.

I would love to see you post an article about vaccine safety written by Dr. Bernadine Healy. She is much more prominent than Paul Offit and has no conflict of interest.

Some other holes in Dr. Offit's logic:

Yes, natural exposure to viruses can cause encephalopathy, but before vaccines existed for measles, mumps, chicken pox, whooping cough, etc. most kids were coming down with these viruses, and autism (especially regressive autism) was extremely rare. It is the unnatural exposure by injection accompanied by aluminum, mercury, etc., that has engendered numerous credible accounts of post-vaccination regression into autism, which Dr. Offit chooses to completely ignore.

The small pox vaccine was successful in eradicating small pox, a very serious disease. But it was not without serious side effects, which is why it is no longer given. So it cannot be pointed to as an example of a totally safe vaccine. The potential side effects were outweighed by the risk of contracting such a serious illness, when the small pox virus was more prevalent than it is today.

How profoundly galling that Offit continues trying to wish away vaccine injury. And maddening that NEJM saw fit to publish his denialist dreck. Where are Jerome Kassirer and Marcia Angell when you need them?

Could somebody please please please inject this man with 10,000 vaccines.* If he survives with the ability to write, we'll read what he has to say.

OMG, I can not believe my eyes. Is this guy truly serious? Sounds like a last ditch effort to bring the public back. I can only hope that the Omnibus Proceedings give him an "in your face". I'm sure this guy will still deny it. God forbid that we do everything in our power to protect our children and keep them safe. God forbid we further research what would benefit every child everywhere. When the truth comes out, and it will, I wonder what all of these arrogant people will do? Probably continue to "deny 'til we die." After all, their paychecks and pride depend on it!
