Abstract

We tested whether maternal vitamin D insufficiency during pregnancy is related to the autism phenotype. Serum 25(OH)-vitamin D concentrations of 929 women were measured at 18 weeks' pregnancy. The mothers of the three children with a clinical diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder had 25(OH)-vitamin D concentrations above the population mean. The offspring of 406 women completed the Autism-Spectrum Quotient in early adulthood. Maternal 25(OH)-vitamin D concentrations were unrelated to offspring scores on the majority of scales. However, offspring of mothers with low 25(OH)-vitamin D concentrations (<49 nmol/L) were at increased risk for 'high' scores (≥2SD above mean) on the Attention Switching subscale (odds ratio: 5.46, 95 % confidence interval: 1.29, 23.05). The involvement of maternal vitamin D during pregnancy in autism requires continued investigation.

So, it looks as if another worst fears is probably more than an inkling or ponder... the defects of our metabolism may have started with the parents..as children who probably got all the required vaccines of their era... x number of DPT, x # of Poilo, gee, don't recall what else was in the 60's when my Autism parent was a child..but there were NO measles vaccines of Any kind. In my era, we had 1 required, smallpox, in the late 30's, early 40's, before school, so I was around 5 years old. My older sibs also had to take it, it was Nationally required, of Adults as well as children, but the sibs were teens by then. Oh, yes, in my family, my husband, Gramps, was in military service and I joined him at his post. We both had to take a long list of vacinnes, with many unusual vaccines. Then my daughter and husband had a similar event in their lives in the early 90's, only Father had even more weird and unusual vacinnes to take than our daughter. We have 1 grandson with Autism/brain damage, system damage, dearly loved and cherished, whose parents are my daughter and son in law, who had all the really secretive and weird shots. So, there's every chance our systems had already been changed by some mutating change of DNA, from 'Environmental' causes, to create malfunctions. I know I don't digest oils very well, nor does our daughter and grandson, so that's why we've taken digestive enzymes... so the vitamin D we're shown to be low in might have a chance to assimilate. Was that apparant in preceeding generations? Who knows, tests weren't taken nor were sypmtoms much taken note of in My grand parents day. grandma peg

Benedetta

I also wonder what the true numbers of kids that have undignosed Kawasakis -- since there is what they call incomplete or atypical Kawasakis.

Regular full-blown Kawasakis is not often dignosed as it is?

Benedetta

As always I am left wondering???

New research says that children with Kawasakis grow up to have problems with lipid metabolism -- Is lipid metabolism connected with the production of vitamin D?
