« Age of Autism Science Summary: Anxiety, Sensory Over-Responsivity, and Gastrointestinal Problems in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. | Main | Call to Action: Ask Congressman Issa to Schedule The Autism Hearing »
On September 8th in Chicago, we parents of children with numerous health
issues, will be honoring Dr. Anju Usman, to recognize the outstanding medical care she has provided to thousands of children with complex medical issues and support her ability to continue to provide appropriate medical care for children, including those with autism.
While emerging scientific evidence has determined that children with autism have a higher incidence of immune dysregulation, gastrointestinal disease, mitochondrial dysfunction, and other complex health issues, many physicians are unaware of these underlying medical conditions and they can remain untreated.
There are dedicated physicians, such as Dr. Usman, who have come under criticism for their willingness to look beyond the autism label to provide appropriate diagnosis and treatment for the various medical conditions. Their ability to treat children individually while incorporating findings from emerging science may be threatened. Our children deserve to have access to physicians who are willing to properly identify and treat all their medical conditions.
Please join us to celebrate Dr. Usman's work and dedication to our children. The future of our children's medical care depends on all of us participating. If you are local, please attend or make a financial gift. For our long distance families and friends, we would be honored by your donations and your support. DonateHERE.

Dr. Usman is a very, very sweet person. Kudos to her for her integrity and resolve in putting children first with an admirable attitude in the face of undeserved adversity.

Anju was Rubén's treating physician for five years. A few months ago, the Chicago Tribune did an uninformed hatchet job on this courageous and caring doctor, bolstered partially by a lawsuit initiated by a disgruntled dad as part of a messy divorce and custody battle. Brave docs who actually insist on treating a child's underlying medical issues, rather than callously dismissing parents with a wave of the hand and an "Oh, that's just part of autism," are having their licenses to practice systematically challenged. I, Daniel Park, father of one of her former patients, stand by Dr. Usman.

My son is a patient of Dr. Usman, and I haven't met a more compassionate physician who actually LISTENS to parents. She is a true hero to the autism world. My son wouldn't be where he is today (going from "severe autism" to "mild") if it weren't for Dr. Usman. I'm very proud of the fact that she is treating my son.

Bravo to this wonderful doctor and all like her who treat the many immune issues of autism. The focus of this movement --- treating the medical issues that appear to be THE reason for the many behaviors of autism --- needs to be the standard of care when a child goes to a doctor and they have lost language, stopped making eye contact, developed painful GI issues such as eating [food aversion, food obsessions], diarrhea, constipation, reflux, vomiting; perseverative behaviors such as echolalia, repetitive play that seems unusual, spinning, verbal/vocal tics, ie - lining up toys; recurrent fevers - acute fevers - never-ending ear infections, sore throats; The BEHAVIORS and the MEDICAL SYMPTOMS are related.
We need to support these doctors as it has been an atrocity that these severe and painful medical issues have been ignored for years in the children. Treat the core medical issues and watch the behaviors improve.
