(Series, Part 1 of 3) The Scientist recently published an article (the revised link is http://the-scientist.com/2011/05/01/power-failure/) about Dr Douglas Wallace who is head of a new unit called the Center for Mitochondrial and Epigenomic Medicine, at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr Wallace believes that “Every one of the diseases we can’t solve is absolutely logical if we put energy at the center,” ... “I believed that in 1970 and I believe it now.” So what’s a mitochondria? If you don’t know, this book might be one of the most important books you read in your life. Use “Click to look inside” and the first two chapters which are available free, will show you why mitochondria are so important. Mitochondria, are intimately involved with your immune system, and if your immune system isn’t working properly, neither will your mitochondria. Dr Wallace has TWO problems in his new mitochondrial research Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, which I believe will be insurmountable:

1) Dr Paul Offit (vaccines and autism).

2) Dr Offit's echo, Arthur L Caplan, Ph. D. ( the Emmanuel and Robert Hart Professor of Bioethics and director of the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania). who says "The scientific case for the importance of vaccines is overwhelming and beyond any dispute (and most worries about safety rest on fear and lies )."

It's my bet, that Dr Wallace has already been instructed to stay away from vaccines, or the impact of vaccines on the development of mitochondrial dysfunction. Mitochondrial dysfunction will always be consigned to the “cause” of vaccine reactions, never the result of a vaccine's administration, because so many medical people consider mitochondrial disorders to be genetic, not "epigenetic" (affected by lifestyle).

If ... Dr Wallace believes autism has something to do with mitochondrial disorders, then he needs to ask “why and how?” - or "what causes the mitochondria to suddenly go wrong?" Read the full post: Vaccines and Neonatal Immune Development.

Thanks Hilary:
I really enjoyed reading it!
Eurpoean descent have mutations in the Oxidation phosphoralazion -- what ever its called, and thus not as effcient in that area, but it does cause them to give off more heat.

1 out of 90 white folk have autism compared to 1 out of 170 Latinos. Maybe it is not just because we whites are such knee bending, educated, little rule following, vaccine worshipping, nice guys afterall. we may be just a little bit more suscepitable since our oxidation phosphoraltion energy pathway ain't that great to begin with. But as we all know here and certianly the Somalians in Minnipolis and the one out of 170 Latinos that everybody's mitro is in danger from the vaccines.

Hilary once again, thankyou for the extra trouble of finding this link. A very good read.

Hilary Butler.

The Scientist has changed the URL, and it's now http://the-scientist.com/2011/05/01/power-failure/ . So all the hundreds of other bloggers who also wrote about it, will also have to change their URLs.

There is no way they could get away with taking it off the web, because it's their feature article in the print edition.

Hi John Stone;
Thanks for checking, and I thought so.

One more way big pharma is poisoning us - this time with arsenic in chicken.

Hi Benedetta,

It looks awfully as if they've removed the article from the web. What a surprise: truth is so precious it can't be shared.

The link to the Scientist "published article" gets me to the Scientist but the link is in error and not found. Some one please check to make sure it is just not me.

I love love love this series of articles. Thank you. I am scheduled to sit down with a pregnant friend to talk about "the whole vaccine thing". These go into the binder I'm giving her.

"In the end, Wallace, whose mother had Alzheimer's and whose son is autistic, isn't out to criticize his colleagues, but to save lives."

This is a pandoras box for sure and is not only concerns autism but MS, ALS, Parkinsons etc...I'm sure this is a political hot potato at CHOPS and the powers that be will scrutinize Dr. Wallaces every move.

Experts have come out and said autism is known to be linked to mitochondrial disease (see ABC news link).

Toxicity studies should be done on the effect of multiple vaccines on the mitochondria. According to the Cleveland Clinic web site, mitochondria are very sensitive to viruses and toxins so it would stand to reason that vaccines could trigger a dysfunction whether a mtDNA mutation exists or not.

Possible Causes of Autism There might be a link between a mitochondrial disorder vaccine and Autism.- ABC news

The issue is what is the combined effect of multiple vaccines on the mitochondria. Why hasn't mitochondrial toxicity and multiple vaccines been looked at? If it has, will the results ever be disclosed?

Dr. Bruce Cohen, a mitochondrial expert, came out with this recommendation last year:

Pharmacologic effects on mitochondrial function

Abstract

The vast majority of energy necessary for cellular function is produced in mitochondria. Free-radical production and apoptosis are other critical mitochondrial functions. The complex structure, electrochemical properties of the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM), and genetic control from both mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and nuclear DNA (nDNA) are some of the unique features that explain why the mitochondria are vulnerable to environmental injury. Because of similarity to bacterial translational machinery, mtDNA translation is likewise vulnerable to inhibition by some antibiotics. The mechanism of mtDNA replication, which is required for normal mitochondrial maintenance and duplication, is inhibited by a relatively new class of drugs used to treat AIDS. The electrochemical gradient maintained by the IMM is vulnerable to many drugs that are weak organic acids at physiological pH, resulting in excessive free-radical generation and uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation.

Many of these drugs can cause clinical injury in otherwise healthy people, but there are also examples where particular gene mutations may predispose to increased drug toxicity. The spectrum of drug-induced mitochondrial dysfunction extends across many drug classes. It is hoped that preclinical pharmacogenetic and functional studies of mitochondrial toxicity, along with personalized genomic medicine, will improve both our understanding of mitochondrial drug toxicity and patient safety. © 2010 Wiley-Liss, Inc. John Stone

An important read.

CHOP is a pharma front, I wonder if the purpose of this center will be to push new drugs to "treat" mito dysfuction. A lot of people are using supplements to help mito disorders and pharma probably wants to take over that market.

This was brilliant, thank you.
