Vaccine May Trigger Early Start of Infant Epilepsy, Vaccine Apologist Shrugs Off Science

What-me-worry-715605 And look who is defending vaccines to the bitter end, at the end of the article. It's our old pal and vaccine court expert for pharma, pediatric neurologist Max Wiznitzer, from Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland.

(From Reuters) - Childhood vaccines may trigger early onset of a severe form of infant epilepsy, but researchers say the disorder is ultimately caused by defective genes and lifesaving vaccines should not be withheld from these children.

The researchers said they feared the study published in the Lancet medical journal would scare parents away from getting their children vaccinated but stressed the babies in the study would likely have developed seizures within months regardless of the vaccine.

The disorder, called Dravet syndrome, generally begins with seizures around six months of age. These children have poor language and motor skills and difficulty relating to others.

Up to 80 percent of them have mutations in the SCN1A gene.

Anne McIntosh of the University of Melbourne's Epilepsy Research Center and colleagues examined the medical records of 40 Dravet syndrome patients with the genetic mutation who had been vaccinated against whooping cough, or pertussis.

They said 30 percent of these children developed their first seizures within two days of receiving the vaccine but symptoms of their disorder were no worse than the other children who had their first seizures later on.

"In about 30 percent of people, it appears that (first seizures) came on rather quickly after the vaccination. But the overall message is that the outcome to the patients did not differ regardless of whether the onset of the disorder was shortly after the vaccination, or later on," said McIntosh.

"These kids already had that genetic abnormality, (so) regardless of the relationship with the vaccine, they would have actually had that disorder happen to them anyway," she added.

"Essentially, there is no proof that people should not be vaccinated ... from concerns about it causing the onset of that disease," she said in a telephone interview.

SENSITIVE ISSUE

Reports linking childhood vaccines to any sort of disorder are always sensitive because they can result in parents refusing to get their children vaccinated. This has caused a resurgence of dangerous diseases, including mumps, measles and whooping cough, in Britain, the United States and elsewhere.

In 1998 British doctor Andrew Wakefield published a study in The Lancet, suggesting the combined measles, mumps and rubella or MMR vaccine might be linked to autism and bowel disease.

The assertion has been widely discredited for years, the Lancet has withdrawn the paper and Britain's General Medical Council has ruled Wakefield acted dishonestly and irresponsibly.

But the damage has been done -- the number of MMR vaccinations in the United States and Europe plunged, prompting a resurgence of both measles and mumps.

This Australian study by McIntosh and colleagues follows an earlier investigation into whether the pertussis vaccine, which is routinely given to children together with diphtheria and typhoid vaccines (DTP), may have led to cases of encephalopathy.

The earlier investigation, led by Samuel Berkovic of the Epilepsy Research Center at the University of Melbourne, found that 12 of 14 patients with so-called vaccine encephalopathy were actually suffering from Dravet syndrome. Eleven of these 12 children were also found to have the SCN1A gene variant.

In an accompanying commentary, Max Wiznitzer from the Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, said McIntosh's study was "consistent with the conclusion that outcome is determined by the underlying disorder and not by proximity to vaccine administration."

Wiznitzer, who was not involved in the study, said "effective and accurate information and communication" could help maintain public confidence in vaccines.

My perfectly normal 4 month old grandson had his vaccines and two days later started having focal seizures which developed into infant spasms. He is now 11 months old and still having seizures and not quite sure if he is brain damaged. There is a link, I don't know what the link is but there is definately a link. If I had to do it all over again I would rethink vaccines not saying I would do without I would just research and not take for granted that our society knows what is best in all situations. We must have a choice as parents to do what WE feel is right because YOU ARE NOT ALWAYS RIGHT and now we pay the price for the rest of our lives and the price is very sad and very unsetteling knowing we did not REALLY make the choice YOU DID .

Just beautiful- One more syndrome with an appropriately wierd name to explain away the symptoms of mercury poisoning. And of course, its genetic (Conductor!- the trumpets!)
Just one more reminder that it is the very oddest thing for human children to develop normally.I cant understand why the evolutionary biologists arent weighing in on these topics.
And hey, Did they run out of Japanese names for mercury/aluminum poisoning? - Or did they just fail to do enough research to discover that Dravet's syndrome was very very common during the days of Minimata poisoning and is called something like Satoko Disease in Japan.
Simply absurd.
Or is this part of the effort to confuse and delay the truth? If so, Im sure that researchers will shortly come up with a variety of new syndromes- one for autistic bowel disease/ one for mercury caused speech delay/ one for whatever follows a couple of flu vaccines at age 6 months- or wait a minute, maybe that IS Dravets syndrome. Each syndrome, will of course, come prepackaged with its own gene- already discovered. You see what I mean friends- Soon we wont even be able to FIND autism in this haystack of new names.

The study had limitations, including its retrospective design as well as its assessment of patients from a single referral center and exclusion of the 20% to 30% of children with Dravat syndrome who don't have SCN1A mutations.

In an accompanying editorial, Max Wiznitzer, MD, of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, wrote that more research would be informative.

There's something about this study that reminds me of Denmark.

My 6yr old with ASD had his first seizure at 7mths 2 weeks after his DTaP, Hib and Hep B shots. No one on either side of our family has seizures and our other 2 children are fine.

I remember taking my then baby to what is known as the top 3 tier childrens hospital and being told that "the risk from disease outweighs the side effects of the vaccines" I remember pleading for answers I was a first time mom but knew something was not right with what was being told to me. I thought how could they rule out the vaccine link without even considering it? That's when I learned about the blind love affair docs have with vaccines.

I wish I knew then what I know now. I wish someone told me about the unfair statute of limitations for the vaccine court and how docs will do everything in their power to prevent you form learning the truth so you can't assert a claim. I wish I knew then to read the package inserts which specifically state that babies with an unknown seizure disorder should not have further vaccinations- If only I could go back in time.

Further More!
No I am not done yet!
It says drugs suggested to take for Dravets is Depokote -- WRONG! What to see it induce seizures then give him valporic acid!

It says drugs to stay away from if you have Dravet syndrome that would be Dilantin.
WRONG! My son did great on Dilantin - same little sweet personality and we only got off of it because of the calcium depletion stuff!

I am done listening to any of these guys. Science and science language has long become a way of doing double talk and getting away with it. McIntosh is a fool that is wasting all our time.

Suzanne, my son too took years after the first seizure after the third DPT shot to finally be dignosed with epilepsy. Age 14 - but he should have been dignosed a lot sooner.

Are you really going to do the gene test?
If so let us know how that goes.

BUT in the mean time This is what I am keeping in my mind:

So what about the heart murmur my son had after his first DPT shot - did they explain that, is this part of the Dravat syndrome?

what about the passing out after the second DPT shot, is that what happens with babies with the Dravat Syndrome?

What about six hours after his third DPT shot and he goes catonic. Is this a common thing for Dravat syndrome?

What about six weeks later and he starts running a real high temperature out of nowhere - has a grand mal seizure and then has atypical Kawasaki's - Is this part of the Dravat syndrome?

What about my daughter - once again does she have dravat syndrome if she passes out from her fifth DPT shot with a 106 temperature?

Does my duaghter have Dravat's if she has Kawasaki's 6 weeks after her fourth DPT shot?

Is it part of Dravats syndrome if my daughter developes depression during her teen years.

Is it part of Dravats if my duaghter kept me up last night - out of her mind - after she had taken three ambien and it still would not put her to sleep?

Does Dravat syndrome cause high SED rates in my daughter?

Is it Dravats that my husband seized at age 28 after a tetanus shot (after receiving many tetanus shots before)?

Is it Dravats syndrome if my husband has acquried mitochondria disorded, dignosed because of severe muscle pains that developed after another tetanus shot at age 34?

Will McIntosh answer those questions for me?

Will the wiz doctor finding similiar stuff at theCleveland, Ohio answer these questions?

--- sorry - guys thanks for letting me vent a little.

Abstract
Mutations in small heat-shock protein 27 and small heat-shock protein 22 genes were found in association with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2 and distal hereditary motor neuropathy. We searched for mutations in small heat-shock protein 27 gene in an Italian family with peripheral neuropathy and intrafamilial phenotypic variability. A novel heterozygous frame-shift mutation c.476_477delCT was found while point mutations in most genes associated with hereditary neuropathies were ruled out. In the proband, who showed a severe early onset peripheral neuropathy, an independent pathogenetic effect on the peripheral nervous system secondary to the tetanus toxoid injection may be supposed. This is the first truncating nonsense mutation in the small heat-shock protein 27 gene identified so far and the clinical, neurophysiologic, and neuropathological findings are discussed.

I love when researchers make guesses with phrases like "probably"...they would have probably developed seizures anyhow. Funny, when lay people make such speculations they dismiss us as not understanding science. Sheesh!

When did mumps become a "dangerous disease"? Was it when the ineffective mumps vaccine turned it from a minor childhood illness into an adult disease?

So, where did the kids get the "mutations in the SCN1A gene"? Do their parents have those mutations. If so, do the parents have seizure disorders? If their parents don't have these mutations, what caused them?

How many people with these mutations in the SCN1A gene have seizure disorders? How do the rates of epilepsy compare among those with this mutation who were vaccinated according to the current schedule and those who were not?

They say that for some of the babies the first seizure did not occur shortly after a vaccine, so they think that lets vaccines off the hook? As veterinarian Jean Dodds said, "The onset of adverse reactions to conventional vaccinations... can be an immediate hypersensitivity or anaphylactic reaction, or can occur acutely (24-48 hours afterwards), or later on (10-45 days) in a delayed type immune response often caused by immune-complex formation."

From the Q&A at the above site, some advice on vaccinating dogs with epilepsy.
http://www.canine-epilepsy-guardian-angels.com/FAQ.htm#vaccinated
"Vaccinations, especially when used in excess of what is needed, are suspected of causing many serious problems in dogs: seizures, pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, encephalitis..." Yes, that's written by a layperson, but what a coincidence that pet owners (and vets too) are observing the same connections between certain health issues and vaccines as are observed by parents of human children. One of those many remarkable coincidences, like how the rate of autism has increased at the same time as the vaccine schedule increased...

Since when did seizures become so common and accepted with just a shrug? I never heard of seizures in infants when my own kids and nieces and nephews were small in the 60's and 70's. Now I have family and friends whose grandkids have had seizures. In my teaching career, seizures were not a common occurrence. Now, in the schools where I work part time, they are a constant worry for the teaching staff. I don't care what these experts say. I believe what my own eyes and ears tell me. Something has changed and it cannot be the genes.

So what's the point of all this research money being spent on finding the "magic gene" that "causes" autism if they are all just going to insist that kids take all the jabs anyway regardless of whether or not the vaccines will harm them specifically?

Another hannah Poling situation? What comes first the chicken or the egg.
Disgusting this so called logic.

What were the causes of the SCN1A polymorphisms? Genetic mutations can be caused by toxins...in cancer we call these toxins "carcinogens". They cause healthy cells to genetically mutate thereby causing cancer. Just because a genetic mutation is identified doesn't mean it was present at conception...quite possibly, these children could have been damaged by the toxins in their vaccinations, leading to the genetic mutation that makes them susceptible to Dravet Syndrome...makes me wonder about the CPOX4 and ALAD2 polymorphisms which predispose people to have an inability to excrete heavy metals. Just thinking out loud...

Unbelievable. It isn't the vaccines that trigger this form of epilepsy in children. It's their defective genes. It is just a coincidence that it happens within hours/days/weeks of their vaccinations. It would have happened anyway even without vaccination.... Do people really buy this crap? I mean, I'm going crazy here.......

I know this may be a silly question but what is the DX code for vaccine encephalopathy? What other DX did the children in the Samuel Berkovic study have?

Do they even know what percentage of people have that gene that never develop Dravet's at all? I'd say they wouldn't know if kids are "likely to develop Dravet's" anyhow unless they have that information.

Reading this made me sick because my son's regression came after his 6 month DPT. He would cut in and out...be in his own world, the suddenly snap back to us, whereas before the shot there was none of this. Years later he had been diagnosed with a 24/7 Petite Mal seizure condition because he coninued to regress into middle childhood. Now I guess he should be tested for this. Now my question is could undiagnosed Dravet's/DpT induced Petite Mals lead to Autistic-like symptoms.

"but stressed the babies in the study would likely have developed seizures within months regardless of the vaccine"

This is "No 9. Fortune-telling" in the list of ploys used to manipulate parents

"Wiznitzer, who was not involved in the study, said "effective and accurate information and communication" could help maintain public confidence in vaccines."

Such as

"but stressed the babies in the study would likely have developed seizures within months regardless of the vaccine"

Really?

There are just no words to explain this idiocy.
