A Statement from Jenny McCarthy & Jim Carrey: Andrew Wakefield, Scientific Censorship, and Fourteen Monkeys

Jim_carrey Los Angeles, February 5, 2010

Dr. Andrew Wakefield is being discredited to prevent an historic study from being published that for the first time looks at vaccinated versus unvaccinated primates and compares health outcomes, with potentially devastating consequences for vaccine makers and public health officials.

It is our most sincere belief that Dr. Wakefield and parents of children with autism around the world are being subjected to a remarkable media campaign engineered by vaccine manufacturers reporting on the retraction of a paper published in The Lancet in 1998 by Dr. Wakefield and his colleagues.

The retraction from The Lancet was a response to a ruling from England’s General Medical Council, a kangaroo court where public health officials in the pocket of vaccine makers served as judge and jury. Dr. Wakefield strenuously denies all the findings of the GMC and plans a vigorous appeal.

Despite rampant misreporting, Dr. Wakefield’s original paper regarding 12 children with severe bowel disease and autism never rendered any judgment whatsoever on whether or not vaccines cause autism, and The Lancet’s retraction gets us no closer to understanding this complex issue.

Dr. Wakefield is one of the world’s most respected and well-published gastroenterologists. He has published dozens of papers since 1998 in well-regarded peer-reviewed journals all over the world. His work documenting the bowel disease of children with autism and his exploration of novel ways to treat bowel disease has helped relieve the pain and suffering of thousands of children with autism.

For the past decade, parents in our community have been clamoring for a relatively simple scientific study that could settle the debate over the possible role of vaccines in the autism epidemic once and for all: compare children who have been vaccinated with children who have never received any vaccines and see if the rate of autism is different or the same.

Few people are aware that this extremely important work has not only begun, but that a study using an animal model has already been completed exploring this topic in great detail.

Dr. Wakefield is the co-author, along with eight other distinguished scientists from institutions like the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Kentucky, and the University of Washington, of a set of studies that explore the topic of vaccinated versus unvaccinated neurological outcomes using monkeys.

The first phase of this monkey study was published three months ago in the prestigious medical journal Neurotoxicology, and focused on the first two weeks of life when the vaccinated monkeys received a single vaccine for Hepatitis B, mimicking the U.S. vaccine schedule. The results, which you can read for yourself HERE, were disturbing. Vaccinated monkeys, unlike their unvaccinated peers, suffered the loss of many reflexes that are critical for survival.

Dr. Wakefield and his scientific colleagues are on the brink of publishing their entire study, which followed the monkeys through the U.S. childhood vaccine schedule over a multi-year period. It is our understanding that the difference in outcome for the vaccinated monkeys versus the unvaccinated controls is both stark and devastating.

There is no question that the publication of the monkey study will lend substantial credibility to the theory that over-vaccination of young children is leading to neurological damage, including autism. The fallout from the study for vaccine makers and public health officials could be severe. Having denied the possibility of the vaccine-autism connection for so long while profiting immensely from a recent boom in vaccine sales around the world, it’s no surprise that they would seek to repress this important work.

Behind the scenes, the pressure to keep the work of Dr. Wakefield and his colleagues from being published is immense, and growing every day. Medical journals take extreme risk of backlash in publishing any studies that question the safety of the vaccination program, no matter how well-designed and thorough the research might be. Neurotoxicology, a highly-respected medical journal, deserves great credit for courageously publishing the first phase of this vaccinated monkey study.

The press has been deeply misled in the way The Lancet retraction, and Dr. Wakefield’s mock trial, have been characterized. Led by the pharmaceutical companies and their well-compensated spokespeople, Dr. Wakefield is being vilified through a well-orchestrated smear campaign designed to prevent this important new work from seeing the light of day.

What medical journal would want to step in front of this freight train? Moreover, why now, after 12 years of inaction, did The Lancet and GMC suddenly act? Is it coincidence that the monkey study is currently being submitted to medical journals for review and publication?

We urge the media to take a close look at the first phase of the monkey study discussed above and to start asking a very simple question: What was the final outcome of the 14 primates that were vaccinated using the U.S. vaccine schedule and how did that compare to the unvaccinated controls?

The U.S. vaccine schedule has grown from 10 vaccines given to our children in the 1980s to 36 today, perfectly matching the dramatic rise in autism. The work of Dr. Wakefield and his colleagues deserves to be shared with the world to further, rather than censor, scientific progress.

Wow. That was awesome. No one can accuse her of being some dumb broad.

Case NOT closed!

Christie,

Do you find it amazing that Amanda Peet advises the public on health issues? If not, why the double standard? And why in God's name would you not want your students' disorders explained? Do you prefer that medical science simply not know why neurological disorders now affect one in six children? Your lack of curiosity about why there are all these disabled children filling special ed classrooms like never before is disturbing.

Matt

I find it amazing Christie that people like you are content in doing nothing. I commend you for being a teacher but like so many doctors who blindly and faithfully regurgitate what was taught to them rather than digging deeper and taking the extra step for knowledge sakes, you seem lazy. Her celebrity status helps raise awareness. And the "finger pointing" you rattle on about is nothing less than trying to find answers to a wide spread problem. Your post sounds like you're on the CDC payroll.

Michelle

I say to the naysayers, do your own research. Find the ingredients to all 36 vaccinations that are recommended (if you can, they are not forthright with ingredients). Don't forget the yearly flu shots and now the H1N1 recommendations. Now take all the ingredient lists and put them side by side by side etc. on a poster board and make a big vaccination collage. Now I want you to look intently at this and say again out loud, there is no possible way injecting all this garbage into young, not fully developed brains and bodies could possibly cause autism.

Hey Greg,

What did you say about "his results are not reproducible?"

I am a parent and a part of the Cryshame Group who fully supports Dr Wakefield and Professors Murch and Walker Smith. These 3 wise men did nothing wrong, they investigated the Lancet 12 and hundreds of other children after that. My son being one of them, The GMC have behaved like puppets for the pharmaceutical companies and the medical cartel. I'ts all about money and reputation and keeping ones job no matter what the outcome is to the stupid decisions they have made for mankind. I will never give up making people aware of MMR vaccine damage, this is my right as a citizen and the sooner people wake up to the fact that yes thousands of children have been brain/gut damaged the better, and I have no doubt about that.
Vaccine damage is recognised all over the world so what is the UK coming to or what are they hiding. We know what they are hiding but we never got a voice at the GMC. Luckily for us parents we have a very strong support group and parents that attended the hearing by God let the panel know their strong feelings on the matter. Tons of support from America and it was great to hear Jim Moody from NAA in America have his say. Another man who know what he is talking about and is not afraid to have his say. No children were failed by the doctors and no parents. People who are too afraid to speak out , well shame on you all that believe the lies of Dr Evan Harris and Brian Deer.

Those poor vaccinated monkeys would have died in the wild, without their survival reflexes. That hepatitis B vaccine study is a BIG deal. I had no idea there were other parts of the study soon to come out. I sure hope the whole study is published soon, despite the campaign of intimidation.

Greg

@Terry@Greg

This HoC report examines the pharmaceutical industry. The pharmaceutical industry can be vilified, which I don't have too much of a problem with given their occasional lack of scrutiny on safety issues in favour of profit. I worked in clinical science for a while, and it calling it science is a misnomer.

However, suggesting that any biases pharma-industry has trickles down to every researcher that has looked at this work is fantastical.

Pharma may employ PR methods, but there is no orchestrated puppetry that can claim control over the publication of scientific research.

Sara

As a mom of an Autistic son, I know Dr. Wakefield and his study are the facts! But, no one will truely take this serious until the exact study is repeated. I am all about spreading the word;D, but we need to give the "scientists" what they want and repeat the study(stage1, so far) again so they can't give us their lame excuses! Children are being poisened and it breaks my heart that ALL parents are not taking this as serious as they should!

Give me one credible reason why the vaccinated vs. unvaccinated study has not been done already?

Please .. don't embarrass yourself with the predictable "excuses" .. too difficult .. too many variables .. too "unethical" to create an unvaccinated group .. on and on.

It is YOU that should be clamoring to have this study done!!!!

Christie

I find it amazing that since you happen to be a celebrity you feel you should advise the public on health issues. I understand your passion for the cause, but think you need to stop criticizing all evidence contrary to the theory of vaccines causing or contributing to Autism. As a teacher with special needs students, it's tiring seeing society constantly having to point the finger every which way to explain disorders.

Kevin Barry

@Greg.

The smearing of Dr. Wakefield is not a conspiracy. As outlined in the House of Commons report below, it is a public relations campaign to "undermine critical voices" because "the safety of brands have been called into question".

The primate studies are a much greater threat to brands than the Lancet paper. Thanks to John Stone for this link.

House of Common's Health Committee report 'The Influence of the Pharmaceutical industry' 2004 p. 60

'The use of PR to counter negative publicity'

'221. Public relations is particularly important during times of bad publicity, especially when the safety of brands is called into question. Considerable resources are invested into building long-term, sustainable relationships with stakeholders and ‘key opinion leaders’ and journalists. These relationships are used to promote the use of certain brands and counter concerns relating to safety. Efforts to undermine critical voices in particular were identified, under terms of “issues management”. In later evidence, in response to the ISM’s memorandum, Pfizer stated that PR is entirely legitimate and can “help to educate and inform”. According to the PMCPA, PR activities may include “placing articles in the lay press, TV documentaries, soap operas etc”.'

Macaques = Monkeys = Primates

Britannica: Macaque: any of about 20 species of gregarious Old World monkeys, all of which are Asian except for the Barbary macaque of North Africa. Macaques are robust primates whose arms and legs are of about the same length. Their fur is generally a shade of brown or black, and their muzzles, like those of baboons, are doglike but rounded in profile, with nostrils on the upper surface. The tail varies between species and may be long, of moderate length, short, or absent.

Jenny or Jim...get on Oprah or Larry King. SAY THIS!! and make sure that the tv station doesn't just hand the doctor the last statement. Mark and Kim did a fantastic job but the tv station STILL bullied them. Kim went 2 against 1 (doc's getting the last word) and Mark went on with a raving lunatic. This lunatic had the balls to even mention the Danish study that was ALSO discredited. Kim and Mark would have had some much more to say if given the chance...but once again, well, you know what happened.
I am in awe of my fellow autism parents. The voices and the actions.
If I haven't said it lately...thank you to each and EVERY ONE of you for continuing. For staying on path and on track. I went to Huff Po and read the comments on there...the difference between the "us" and the "them"...we are fighting for the lives of our children. They are fighting to be as mean and disgusting as they can be. They are truly sick individuals. I can't fathom the hatred of these people and I sure don't understand it.

Alexander Cornswalled

The vilification of Dr Wakefield is mind boggling. It's gotten so bad he was driven out of England by big pharma interests and forced to set up in the USA. I can only admire his dedication to the well being of the world's children that he chose to be exiled from his native land rather than recant that which he knows to be true.

It's very telling that the criticism of his ground breaking study has been pedantic and obtuse, dealing not with his conclusions but debatable points about the scientific method. He offered very real proof of the tie between vaccines and autism. His founding and subsequent work with Thoughtful House has only reinforced his conviction to exposing that tie.

Greg

Sorry Guys.

You can't have it both ways. You claim that the medical establishment is trying to discredit Wakefield while mentioning that he publishes regularly in respectable (by the way, Neurotoxicology is nowhere near as 'respected' as The Lancet -- check for yourself http://eigenfactor.org/) journals.

The fact is, his results are not reproducible. As a scientist we search for the truth. If a researcher developed a credible study proving something like this it would be huge. No journal would turn it down because it would be a landmark study -- every journal would want to carry it.

I urge you all to release yourself from conspiracy theories on this.

Al B

Thank you for the truth about this. Keep up the good fight. One question, what are the chances a class action lawsuit could be launched against the FDA & Health Canada for their NOT protecting people from pharma drugs?

Dana Read

Just do the dam study!!!!! (And thank you A of A, Jenny & Jim)

Isabella Thomas

The Lancet retraction was a shock to us.
Both my boys were part of the Lancet study. I fear that children with Autism and bowel problems will not get any more treatment because doctors will be frightened of the 'backlash'.
As someone said to me today and I agree:
the lancet paper was not a research study with statistical lessons to be learned - it was typical of the type of paper written when a new syndrome appears to be emerging that is to say it was a Case Report of a small number of children manifesting similar histories and signs and was a description of what their investigations revealed. it embarrasses me that the scientific community are too thick (or bent) to realise this.

I remember reading about the first phase of this monkey study on the CBS news website, a major news outlet, several months ago. I was surprised they were even reporting on it, any studies that question the safety of vaccines are usually vilified or ignored. I haven't read a single follow-up article ANYWHERE. I find this creepy and alarming. I've never been completely convinced of the autism/vax link, but I think it's enough of a possibility to warrant further research, and the Big Brother-ish clampdown on news outlets and the scientific community gives me grave concerns as to their motives.

Bob Moffitt

"The press has been deeply misled in the way The Lancet retraction, and Dr. Wakefield’s mock trial, have been characterized."

Was the press misled .. or .. did the press willingly participate in misleading the public? I guess it depends on who owns the media outlet.

Hopefully the "vaccinated vs. unvaccinated" monkey study .. will spur a national demand that such a "common sense" study be done on children. At the very least this study should provide political support of pending federal legislation that seeks to fund such a study.

What better way to spend our tax dollars than providing public health agencies with the evidence to prove their vaccines are as "safe and harmless" as THEY insist they are?

Kevin Barry

Dr. Wakefield was referring in part to the primate studies when he said "the science will continue in earnest".

The GMC needs to put their powdered wigs in storage. They are like a Monty Python skit, a kangaroo court making declarations to rip a page out of the Big Book of Science (and the number of the pages to be ripped shall be 3 , not 4....) What century are they in?

Cheers to the journal Neurotoxicology! I hope Neurotoxicology and other peer reviewed journals realize it's the 21st century.

Thank you Jenny and Jim!

I'm afraid, very afraid, for this entire generation of children. And anyone who isn't (i.e. the media) is asleep.

If the monkeys weren't already dead, I'm guessing Offit would be on his way to kill them right about now. Truth hurts.

We should have said this from the beginning, where were we? Overvaccination is key. But I also think ONE vaccine can do it. In a predisposed child, that's all it would take. I think it's high time we have pre conception, birth biomarkers that sets aside such children until further inquisition of their immune quality, followed by immunologists. I say two of these markers are easy to do, one is Hyper IgE on cord blood, and the other is IL-23. If those were looked at, it would indicate either a very weak immune system, and or overrambunctious one. Where oh where is the March of Dimes when we need them....they also are into biomarkers of metabolism problems or immune problems? Are they asleep? I of course think that makes sense, but I know what the outcome will be. There would be a MAJORITY of children with this marker, therefore, the whole "herd immunity non science" thought would be challenged. Therefore, would challenge the whole idea of vaccinating at will. Perhaps that should be our angle? Enlarge the contraindications!

Lauren - Chicago

Um you don't even know the difference between monkeys and primates and we should take advice on public health from you?

Thank you, Jenny! Don't let them forget about the monkeys!!!

Thanks for this article and thanks for all you do. I shall forward this to my media contacts. Maybe someday they will appreciate

Explains everything, doesn't it? The shock and awe media campaign wasn't offensive, but defensive. Wow.

Sarah

Thank you Jenny and Jim for your unwaivering support of Dr. Wakefield and for fighting for our kids...

I think you are absolutely right about the timing of the Lancet retraction...the outcome of the monkey study scares the bejesus out of them, (and me too) but I think it's what is needed to smash through the denial and end the assault on our kids once and for all.

4Bobby

Thank you so much. I look forward to the publication of this study.

Thank You

LoneWolf

We have never had our children vaccinated (they are 5 and 10) although we do get some funny looks from people at times.

I always find it ironic that the people who promote vaccines will not do the double-blind studies to prove or disprove the effectiveness and safety of vaccines. Then they turn around and challenge the validity of natural/herbal remedies on the lack of such studies.

Nora

Thank You Thank You THANK YOU!
