Governor Paterson of NY Reverses H1N1 Vaccine Mandate

New york Rick Karlin reported last night in the CapitolTimes blog HERE that the Governor of NY has issued a press release reversing the Empire State's H1N1 vaccine mandate for healthcare workers in an effort to preserve limited supplies for at-risk populations.

Governor David A. Paterson today announced that State Health Commissioner Richard F. Daines, M.D., has suspended the mandatory influenza immunization requirement for New York health care workers so that the limited vaccine supplies can be used for populations most at risk of serious illness and death – especially pregnant women and children and young people between the ages of 6 months and 24 years.

“Over the last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) acknowledged that New York would only receive approximately 23 percent of its anticipated vaccine supply by the end of the month,” Governor Paterson said. “As a result, we need to be as resourceful as we can with the limited supplies of vaccine currently coming into the State and make sure that those who are at the highest risk for complications from the H1N1 flu receive the first vaccine being distributed right now in New York State...”

Cathy R., I'm right there with you... 2004 is when I was pregnant with my twins (both dx'd with ASD's in 2008). I was going round and round w/ my OB/GYN b/c I was hesitant to get a flu shot and she used the shortage and the fact that they were "reserved" for me b/c I was "high risk" to help guilt me into compliance. And thanks to the Media Bastards you mentioned (and my OB/GYN echoing their words), I was convinced that thimerosal was "no longer in vaccines" and that Autism was purely genetic anyway, so I really wasn't at risk for having children on the spectrum... :(
On a brighter note, I was thrilled to see this ridiculous mandate overturned (though obviously irritated at the lack of honesty about the real reasons behind the decision)

36000 people die yearly from the seasonal flu. 1000 have died from the swine flu this past month.
I do not mean to be unconcern about those poor souls that have died this past month, it is just what is the big emergency that the president has to sign for some emergency measures????

CDC report seasonal flu deaths here http://www.cdc.gov/flu/keyfacts.htm

Cathy R.

2004...was still vaccinating...FOUGHT FOUGHT FOUGHT to get the flu shot for my little guy b/c he is 'high risk'...nail in the coffin...media bastards!

How familiar is that? In lieu of the angry mob raid and hog-tying of the local government, they have made peace by announcing some pseudo-ethical alternative.

Remind you of CDC decision that thimerosal "should be reduced or eliminated in vaccines as a precautionary measure."?

Don't let the needle poke you on the way out, gov.

Garbo, I agree with you that Gov. Paterson's decision does allow the government to avoid a court decision that could go against them.

Having said that, I'll also acknowledge that Paterson knows that he is on the outs with the party bosses, so he is doing what he thinks is right, without the political concerns that other government officials have. (For example, did you notice that today he pledged to work for legalized same-sex unions? *That* won't score him any points politically... which makes me think he's in the rare position of having no bridges left to burn, allowing him to act solely on his principles. Even if you don't support gay marriage, you have to admire a guy who does what he believes.)

What are the ramifications of Obama now declaring H1N1 a national emergency?
I'm scared this is one step away from all hope lost:(
Our sister hospital in my toen has pins for everyone to wear that states they received their flu shot and also has pins for anyone who chose not to receive the shot to wear that says they declined their shot.

This would never have been possible without the tireless work of John Gilmore, Heather Walker, Lisa Rudley, Rita Palma, Louise Kuo Habbakus and Robert Krakow.

Was that the year Chiron couldn't make enough? Sure - people get extra panicky if they think they can't have something. I'm sure some folks will see the shortage as a further incentive to get the vaccine - as is their right.

JenB

Didn't the 2004 flu vax shortage actually increase demand for the flu shot?

Stagmom

I think there really are shortages. Flu vaccines are difficult to make. And consider this, if you knew a large portion of your market was planning to decline your product, would make your original production amount? If you only get 45% of your RSVPs you aren't going to buy as much food for your party. Maybe this is what's going on?

4bobby

Yes, many thanks to Gary Null. I was so moved by his presentation...

Benedetta

You know that they are saying there are flu vaccine shortages.

So, it won't be long that someone, somewhere will deem it critical to have the now swine flu vaccine with only the antigen and no adujavent changed --- and hook that adujavent right on to that antigen.

Kathy Blanco

thanks to Gary Null who beat them over by a truth beam two by four...thanks Gary Null...

Yes, I definitely smell a familiar, stinky rat.

My guess is their altruistic hyperbole is a cover story for the fact that they (and HHS/CDC) don't want this to go to court, where it's obvious that vaccine mandates will be struck down as illegal. They don't want to set the precedent.

Gatogorra

Plandemic, lol. Yeah, uh, we er need all that ethylmercury for pregnant women and infants. Why waste it on healthy adults?

Kristina

Hmm. I think he's lying about the reason, but whatever. The end result is great!

deb in IL

"Plandemic" - I LOVE that clever word!

Maggie

Watching nurses protesting vaccines has cause tremendous damage to their vaccine programs. GOOD!! Now, they are trying to save face and back off. Too late. Take your plandemic and your vaccines and GO AWAY!!!
