From the Editor: Making waves

David Kirby's next book, "Death at Sea World," isn't out till July but already there are two petitions against it. You know, don't buy it, don't read it, don't believe it. Kinda familiar, eh?

Autism Speaks Sends A Message to Community?

EndorsedAutism Speaks featured Dr. Paul Offit in the "People" category of its website (HERE.) As of this morning, the link has rotated off the AS site for newer stories.

I assume whoever chooses the site's content pays attention to the article/info they post. I certainly do here at Age of Autism. And if I post something controversial, I add a note, so our readers are clear about the choice of content. Nothing from Autism Speaks, just a mention and a link. So, is this a tacit endorsement of Dr. Offit's book, in which he targets Jenny McCarthy, Dr, Wakefield and other people working tirelessly to help chilldren with autism?  Here was the copy:

Author Royalties From Autism Book Donated to Autism Research (Philadelphia, Penn.)  Paul Offit, MD, announced today that all author royalties earned from the sale of his new book, "Autism's False Prophets: Bad Science, Risky Medicine, and the Search for a Cure," will be donated to the Center for Autism Research at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Here is THE ARTICLE AS linked.

TannersDad:
The person who wrote that to you is the one who needs to get a grip...
I enjoy your passion for your son and believe you to be a fierce WarriorDaddy.
Don't let an ignorant bonehead get you down!!

A mean comment... Just feeling sorry for myself today... Can someone explain why the world has to be so tough on us... How do I "get a Grip"???

Comment:
Jean, I have no problem with being labeled aggresive but my intention was not to dismiss the worries of parents of autistic children.

I found it amusing that the first comment to this piece is exactly what the author was pointing out, yet Tanners Dad didn't seem to see that at all.

My comment speaks more to the way people with their sheep like mentality jump from one cause to another, all puffed up on sentimentality and a false idea of compassion. And of course the ubiquitous ribbon.

I was very serious about one thing. Tanners Dad resorted to the most nauseating form of hyperbole, something I've been wrongly accused of, yet the fact is there are many children who are abused, tortured, kidnapped, raped, murdered, and not enough people are doing anything about it.
So, to distill my comments, autism is a tragedy but Tanners Dad needs to get a grip.

I'm excited that I'll be adding the Acts of Love event this year, and hope it is a big success for all!

"We are very pleased to partner with Dr. Offit, and to accept the royalties of his book for the work done here at the Center for Autism Research (CAR) at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia," said Dr. Bob Schultz, director of the Center for Autism Research at Children's Hospital.

Dear All,
Do any of you take your children to CHOP to see Dr. Shultz? I certainly would not, especially funded by Offit money. I don't know that the sale of 5 books to the public will even cover a box a crayons for the waiting area though.

Just wait though--the crafty pharmostitute has a TRICK up his sleeve. Have Merck donate $$$ to his Non-profit, ECBT --> buy a bunch of books ---> put in every peds office to give to docs and parents. Voila! cashola to Offit with tax deductible donation to CHOP --brilliant little slight of hand only the devil himself could have though up!

--Prophet regarding "Proffit"

I checked twice and this item seems to have been removed from the Autism Speaks website. Of course, the morning eyes are blurry, so I might have missed it.
