So now we're having a national debate, courtesy of Mayor Bloomberg, over super-sized sugary drinks and obesity. Fine, but what about a super-sized vaccine schedule and its effects on diabetes and obesity, for starters?

The Best Year for our Kids

Brown_paperBy J.B. Handley

On September 18, 2007, Jenny McCarthy appeared on Oprah to talk about her son's recovery from autism and her new book, Louder Than Words. Since that day, our world has never been the same.

Was it a great twelve months for our kids? You bet it was, and it's only beginning. Herewith, my Top 10 events of the last twelve months that are serving to revolutionize our movement, spread the truth about autism, and hopefully get us to a place very soon where new autism cases are being prevented and even more children are recovering.

1. Jenny

How do you ever measure what Jenny has done for our kids and our community? Before Jenny the connection between vaccines and autism and the notion of autism being recoverable were whispers. Now, they're shouts. Jenny has said so many great, important things. This simple line is perhaps my favorite: "It's so easy when you stand on truth. When you stand on truth, no one can knock you down."

2. The Polings

We all saw her. This beautiful little red-headed girl on CNN standing to the left of her parents, Jon and Terry Poling, as they delivered the news to the world live on CNN that the US Government had conceded in a case brought before vaccine court that vaccines caused Hannah Poling's autism. To make life meaningfully worse for health authorities in denial, Jon Poling was not only a doctor, he was a mainstream neurologist. His wife, Terry, was both a nurse and an attorney. As CNN reported on March 7, 2008:

"The parents of a 9-year-old girl with autism said Thursday that their assertion that her illness was caused by childhood vaccines has been vindicated by the federal government's decision to compensate them."

3. Dr. Bernadine Healy

Dr. Bernadine Healy was appointed by the first President Bush and approved by the US Senate to be the first woman to ever run our National Institutes of Health, serving as Director in the early 1990s. At that point, the NIH had thirteen separate research institutions, more than 16,000 employees, and a research budget exceeding $9 billion per year. From the NIH website:

"The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the US Department of Health & Human Services is the primary Federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research. Helping to lead the way toward important medical discoveries that improve people's health and save lives, NIH scientists investigate ways to prevent disease as well as the causes, treatments, and even cures for common and rare diseases… NIH is the steward of medical and behavioral research for the Nation. Its mission is science in pursuit of fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to extend healthy life and reduce the burdens of illness and disability."

A graduate of Vassar College and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Healy is also the past President of the American Red Cross and was the Director of coronary care at Johns Hopkins. She’s medical establishment royalty. If Dr. Healy is the Ted Williams of her field, Paul Offit is struggling to make his neighborhood T-Ball team--that's how big she is.

And, on April 18th, 2008 Dr. Healy dropped a bomb in an article she wrote for US News & World Report:

But vaccine experts tend to look at the population as a whole, not at individual patients. And population studies are not granular enough to detect individual metabolic, genetic, or immunological variation that might make some children under certain circumstances susceptible to neurological complications after vaccination…
Families are not alone in searching for a trigger that might explain why autism and autism spectrum disorders have skyrocketed; now they reportedly affect about 1 in 150 kids. No doubt some of the increase is soft, due to broader diagnostic criteria, greater awareness, and—now that the notion of a detached "refrigerator" mom as a cause has blessedly fallen by the wayside—greater openness. But the rise of this disorder, which shows up before age 3, happens to coincide with the increased number and type of vaccine shots in the first few years of life. So as a trigger, vaccines carry a ring of both historical and biological plausibility…

The debate roils on—even about research. The Institute of Medicine in its last report on vaccines and autism in 2004 said that more research on the vaccine question is counterproductive: Finding a susceptibility to this risk in some infants would call into question the universal vaccination strategy that is a bedrock of immunization programs and could lead to widespread rejection of vaccines. The IOM concluded that efforts to find a link between vaccines and autism "must be balanced against the broader benefit of the current vaccine program for all children."
Wow. Medicine has moved ahead only because doctors, researchers, and yes, families, have openly challenged even the most sacred medical dogma. At the risk of incurring the wrath of some of my dearest colleagues, I say thank goodness for the vaccine court.

Thank you, Dr. Healy, for approaching this topic with the intellectual honesty and fearlessness you are famous for throughout your storied career.

4. Green Our Vaccines

8,000 people. A really hot day in Washington, D.C. Jenny. Jim. RFK Jr. What can you say? If you were lucky enough to be there, it was a magical moment for our community. If you had to stay home and care for your baby, we did our best to represent.

5. Amanda Peet and Every Child By Two

What's that you say? How can Amanda Peet be a good thing for our community? I think many of you know the answer. PR buffoonery at this level has rarely before been seen and only serves to highlight our story and the truth. Soon after Paul Offit announces Every Child By Two's newly planned PR initiative involving Amanda Peet, a vapid actress with no dog in the fight, what happens? CBS Evening News delivers a proctology exam of Offit's conflicts. Nice.

As ABC News reported:

"Amy Pisani, executive director of ECBT, says she hopes Peet's advocacy is "a 100 percent antidote" to McCarthy's position that the current vaccine schedule places children at a higher risk of developing autism."

Ms. Pisani, if "antidote" means "a catastrophic backfire that makes you look like complete idiots" than you're spot on.

This whole fiasco lends credibility to an ancient Himalayan proverb: "Don't let conflicted ego-consumed doctors run PR campaigns for a multi-billion dollar industry." From ABC News:

Dr. Paul Offit, chief of the section of infectious diseases at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, says much of this has to do with the fact that the public, as a whole is, in many ways, more eager to listen to celebrities than to researchers. "I think when Jenny McCarthy appears on "Oprah" and says, 'I think vaccines harm our kids,' that has an effect. When Amanda Peet comes out and says, 'I believe the scientists on this,' that also has an effect," Offit says. "It's a culture of celebrity, and we tend to trust what celebrities tell us."

If Paul Offit steps on his dick too many more times, he's going to have to replace the soles on his Rotateq-funded Gucci loafers.

6. Offit Jumps the Shark

Credit to Mark Blaxill for first mentioning Paul Offit's "Jump the Shark" moment to me. While not widely reported, Paul Offit had a great conversation with Sam Miller, writer of the OC Register's terrific column "Inside Autism." Aside from conceding that the Rotateq vaccine for which he holds a patent has made him "wealthy", Offit also drops this ditty:

Asked whether any specific facts in the story [from CBS Evening News] were wrong, he said it was primarily the tone he objected to. But he did say that the hospital owns the patent, not him (though he received a share of royalties from it). Also, when Attkisson noted that he had been quoted as saying children could safely take up to 10,000 vaccines at once, "what I actually have said is at least 10,000. It's probably closer to 100,000. I've published that in several places, scientific and medical journals. It's not me who conceived that. You can argue about the caveats … but obviously she just said it to make me sound like a wild-eyed maniac."

100,000 vaccines at one time? If you asked 100,000 scientists how a small child would react to simultaneous administration of 100,000 vaccines, 99,999 of them would say it would result in certain and immediate death. Wild-eyed maniac? I think Offit's "id" finally spoke up.

7. Here Come the Movies

Autism Yesterday, Beautiful Son, and Finding the Words all premiered this year. If a new parent sat down and watched these three beautiful films, their world would never be the same.

8. Autism One Conference – May 2008

A remarkable conference for a remarkable year. Has there ever been a greater list of topics, a greater set of speakers, or more hope offered for our kids? No, there hasn't. Thank you, Autism One, for being there to share so much with so many.

9. Sick Monkeys

Also in May, Age of Autism's Dan Olmsted broke this story:
The first research project to examine effects of the total vaccine load received by children in the 1990s has found autism-like signs and symptoms in infant monkeys vaccinated the same way. The study's principal investigator, Laura Hewitson from the University of Pittsburgh, reports developmental delays, behavior problems and brain changes in macaque monkeys that mimic "certain neurological abnormalities of autism."
The story speaks for itself – look out when the research is published some time in 2009.

10. Katie Wright on Oprah
OK, fine, Katie's appearance on Oprah actually happened in April 2007, so it wasn't technically within the last 12 months. But, Katie's appearance on the show was the first time Oprah had ever done a show on autism and it was the first time a national audience heard from a Mom who believed vaccines caused her son's autism. And they only edited Katie a little.
---
Folks, that's not an easy list to create, there have been so many remarkable moments this year. I'm sure AoA readers have many other great moments on their lists, too. And, I'd be remiss to not try and pick some of the themes I think the next year will hold. Here's my top four stories for the next 12 months:

1. Jenny, Part 2
Jenny's newest book, Mother Warriors, hits in late September. Hold on to your hats.

2. Omnibus Decision

I know, I know. It's bad Kharma to talk about the Omnibus proceedings. But, we are more than likely to get multiple decisions on the cases in the next twelve months. I like our chances. If even one goes our way, bar the door. If the Poling case dominated a news cycle, a ruling for 5,000 kids will be a neutron bomb.

3. Somali kids in Minneapolis

This story is just starting to get traction and its starting to look pretty clear: Somali kids, all immigrants with less rights regarding vaccines than US citizens, get double-vaccinated and autism rates of this population skyrocket compared to everyone else. It's tragic, and it may well serve as a microcosm for all the over-vaccinated children.

4. Sick Monkeys, published

Presuming the aforementioned vaccinated monkey study is published in one or more major medical journals, the world will be able to learn a lot more about what, exactly, has happened to our kids.

I believe the Universe is ultimately a just and moral place. If the last 12 months are any indication, our community is on the right track, and I genuinely pray for more of the same in the coming year.

torileysmom:
I thank you for posting that and I'm glad you enjoy reading my other posts. I know I may sound a bit naive about the whole rally thing, because I am. My son was diagnosed almost 2 yrs ago so I'm fairly new to the community. I, like so many others didn't realize the gravity of this situation till it came up and took a chomp outta my rear end. That's why I can make statements to people about having the proverbial "blinders" on and living in a bubble. I too lived in a bubble.
I'm glad I've had my eyes opened and it would have happened anyways because I have my nephew with the same Dx as my son (however not as severe) but sometimes I wish I could go back to my bubble and stick my head in the sand. Too late for that, huh?
Now, I talk to people in the grocery store and Dr's offices, the health dept (they were NOT happy) and scores of other people. I once was sitting in the parking lot of our local grocery store and seen a van pull in with an autism magnet. I jump out of my van and jumped the poor man..."where did you get your magnet??" He said he and his wife work with autistic children and he would love to help my son. He asked how old he was and how severe. I turn to point at Riley sitting in the car and say "There he is." The guy about died laughing because Riley had wiggled out of his car seat and was licking the car windows. Yes, one of my proudest moments as a mom. I may (someday) tell you the diaper in the chandelier story, lol.
All of that said, thank you to everyone that can go to the rally(s) and be a voice for me and Riley. I can't tell you how much I appreciate those of you that fight the good fight everyday.

i too had no idea what to do before reading jenny's book and coming here. i am so thankful i did. my son is on his way to recovery! and my daughter is on a delayed vaccine schedule!

I also did the screaming laugh when I got to the part about Offit stepping on his weiner(sorry I am too immature to use the other word.) Thanks for the great read and the great laugh.

I HAVE A DREAM....a not so secret meeting

McCain and Palin - 3 Hours - the following

JB, Katie Wright, Ann Dashall, Mark Blaxill, Dan Olmstead, Jenny McCarthy. Dr. Stoller, Dr. Rossignal, Dr. Bradstreet, Dr. Ayoub, Dr. Wakefield, The Redwoods, The Bonos, Ann Brasher.... and more of US!

Slides, videos, and recovery stories...

hi rileysmom
i always enjoy your comments and particularly your recent arguments on other blogs, but i had to mention that jenny's rally was by no means the first, and certainly won't be the last. safeminds, NAA and other groups have organized rallies just like jenny's, maybe with a little less attendance, but always with as much spirit. i attended one in 2005 in which i had the opportunity to speak with Hilary Clinton.
no biggie, just wanted to point out that many people have worked hard in years BEFORE this one, this year didn't just miraculously appear out of nowhere. lots and lots of groundwork has been laid in years before we came into this fight...

Both tears and laughter with this one JB. Jenny is the reason my son is on the road to recovery. We have a long way to go but we are getting there. Slowly but surely.
I had mentioned before that I may be cynical but today, I read this and you put a spotlight on all that has been accomplished in a 12 month period. So in this moment I am happy.
Thank you to everyone that went to the rally. Yes you did represent very well. I wish my son's picture could have been there. IF we ever have to have another one...I will be there, physically or in spirit again. I pray there will be no need for another one. As much as it was wonderful that it was done, it's not something you want to do twice in this community. Hopefully the message finally got thru.
I about dropped out of my seat with the whole Offit stepping on his dick thing. That's where some of the tears came in cuz I was laughing so hard.
Thanks again to JB Kim Anne Dan Mark. The whole AOA crew for always reporting the truth no matter how scary it may seem. Thank you for being a voice for me and my son.
Mr Kirby Jenny and Dr Rimland for helping to open the door to recovery for our children. Sheryl Attikkson for not being afraid to stand up and point at the wrong doers.
Tim K and Tanners dad, Craig, Andrea, Robin, to many to even try to mention, I enjoy reading your posts so very much.
Thanks to every one that gets on here and posts messages but not only that, gets off their butts and does something about it too.
Aw, now you made me all mushy, I'm supposed to be all cynical and nasty!!!!
But I feel a little lighter in my heart tonight.

I agree what an amazing year for autism thank's to Jenny McCarthy for letting all of our voice's be heard through her! My family and Ann Brashier were the families that came and held the Mississippi sign at Green Our Vaccine's what an amazingly moving event! I think the only thing you left out was Jenny twice on Larry King Live which was great! God Bless you thank's for all you do everyday to keep us informed we appreciate all of your hard work! My child is one of the 5000 case's I hope that move's along as quick as the next twelve months! You can go to www.metrochristianliving.com go to column's and that's my story and you can read my son's vaccination which lead him into the world of autism.
Thanks,
Dana

I come to AoA every day. Some days I come looking for answers, others I come for a little vindication, today I came for a hope as my little one had a bad week, and mystically you handed that to me today.

Jenny's book is what got my son on the road to recovery. I know in my heart that we would be no where near to the gains my son has made w/ out biomedical intervention. I hear all the time that he is not a typical ASD kid, "atypical autism/PDD-NOS" is an intersting diagnosis to say the least.

My non verbal, head hitting, tantruming, stimming, no immaginative play, no interatction with family, 1-5 words 3 3/4 year old boy

is now

a 4 3/4 boy talking (regained all of lost speech and is about 8 months behind now), singing, dancing, trying to make jokes, has amazing imaginative play, no more head banging, harrasses me my husband and his cousins to come play....he is not recovered, but he is about 90% there.

I thank God for Jennys book to show me the light and rest of you for being there to help me along the way.

- Heather

I think Hornig study is tremendously important: people must not let go of this for an instant. After the spin and the headlines it has given the game away. Even, it has given the game away because of the spin and the headlines. Certainly in the top ten, I should say.

Also, in the UK disciplinary hearing against the Royal Free doctors the truth also emerged about Lancet edtior Richard Horton's allegations against Andrew Wakefield:

http://www.theoneclickgroup.co.uk/documents/vaccines/JABS%20Briefing%20Note,%209%20April%202008.pdf

These are, of course, not media triumphs, but we must make sure that they are not forgotten or ignored. They are immensely important breakthroughs.

I think another biggie is that autism was mentioned - however - periperhally at BOTH conventions. Yes, we still have a LONG way to go in this arean - but only a few years ago - they didn't even know the word autism.

The first step is awareness ...

"Wow. Medicine has moved ahead only because doctors, researchers, and yes, families, have openly challenged even the most sacred medical dogma."

And move ahead it has. I got an email from an autism dad yesterday and he writes (and I paraphrase) that mainstream medicine is a failure as far as autism is concerned. People have figured out that psychiatrist drugs and sedatives make things worse. The underlying holistic nature of alternative medicine now makes more sense.

What autism has done, has helped us reassign our priorities towards our health in getting us to pick and choose the most beneficial approach to total health. We are thinking a lot harder about what we put into our bodies. We are researching body bio-chemistry and finding out about supplementation to naturally get our bodies to do as nature intended. Because, oftentimes, the cure (of mainstream medicine) is more deadly than the disease.

http://www.lewrockwell.com/sardi/sardi90.html#_edn33

I'll never know what the autism community was like "before Jenny", since reading her book opened my eyes to the fact that my 2 year old had autism. Yes, the mainstream establishment completely failed to notice the MASSIVE warning signs he had for months and months. This has been a crazy year for me. My son went from labeled as moderately (not mildly) autistic with no words to the talking, playing, socializing, happy boy he is just eleven months later. I wasted no time thanks to this community giving me all the resources I needed to help my son. He is so close to recovered, I can taste it. Without biomed, I can't imagine what his life would be like. Chelation, GFCF, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial treatments have been MIRACLES for my son. I am thankful every day that I came into this community during this ground breaking year. I am a different person than I was before autism. I am a better person.
Nicole

Thanks, J.B.

At the top of my list is the transformation of AUTISM from an awareness issue to a real debate on the causes and the possible solutions.

Modern Medicine is forced to pump out more and more bogus studies in order to persuade parents of the safety of injecting dozens of vaccines into an infant while the cascade of damaged children continues.

More new parents are choosing a sensible vaccine schedule, or not vaccinating at all. It is forcing the vaccine zealots to adjust their tactics and we are seeing their thugish bullying approach turn people away from them.

If Offit felt the need to write a book attacking parents who are trying to help their kids, and drag out an ill-informed actress to compete with Jenny McCarthy, then it's obvious we are having an effect.

Not hearing much from ol' Amanda Peet these days ...

Gotta share "a best year moment" that happened to us last night:

Last night I collapsed on the love seat after teaching classes all day at our home school cooperative, we had finished all of my son's spelling review for his test. (He attends regular school for services.)
I was totally spent. He was bushed after a long day too.

Josh laid on the couch across from me and we just talked.
He has recall of his school day now, a major breakthrough thanks to HBOT healing and mitochondrial support recently added after 2 years of intensive chelation therapy.

I decided to ask Josh about his new special areas class, Spanish. Yesterday special areas was Spanish. I noticed the report card (still lacking) had him graded perfectly in Spanish.
"Was this an error?" I wondered.
Admittedly, when they told me they had added Spanish to Art, PE, Music and Technology I thought "No way! We are still mastering English!"

So I quizzed Josh half heartedly, both of us sprawled out after a long day. Just wanting to connect with him, not expecting much of an answer.
"So did they teach you to count in Spanish today?"
And he rattled off a perfect unprompted count 1-10 in Spanish.
"Wow!"
My husband was out walking the dog, so when he returned I had Josh count again, amazing!
"How about colors?" by this time my youngest quite Dora literate, jumped in. Between the two of them they rattled off all the colors correctly.
Then Josh told us "Ola" means hello! We reviewed "Good Day and Good Night" then I told them both "Buenas noches Niños." and sent them off to bed.
"Buenos Noches!" I got back in unison as they tumbled down the hall.

Sometimes you get more than you bargain for...
I can remember many many tearful nights of praying "Please God, just let him be able to say "yes" or "no". Anything God, anything besides "EEEEeeeeeEEEE".
Please please say "ouch" or "it hurts" anything to express pain! Instead of the silent blank look as he grabbed the toaster oven coils unknowing, while I made dinner across the room.
I still want to be sick when I think back to those moments.

"My formally non-verbal kid was mastering Spanish. WOW!"
Boy! I would sure like to visit that neurologist that cautioned me:
"What you are doing, is NOT scientific!!!" (DAN,the GFCF diet, Allergy testing.)
I would love to see the look on his face now.
Maybe one day Josh could go back and spout off:
"Eres doctor loco.
¡Tu estupidez casi arruinó mi vida!!! ¡Agradecer a dios que mis padres no escucharon ti!"
Translation:
"You are a crazy doctor.
Your stupidity almost ruined my life!!!
Thank God my parents didn't listen to you!"

here are my highlights
1. Edward saying "when i grow up i want to be bigger like you"
2. my wife standing up at a local meeting about picky eating asking all the parents "who's kids have got bowel problems, come and talk to me after"
3. Brian telling a group of parents out side the GMC to get onto google and look things up.
4. The autism file magasine
5. Treating Autism's Parent to parents spreading the word (UK)
6. SCD Waffles with peanut butter yum
7. crying when i read "Tanners last words"
8. Ginger Jeanne Wade and all the US bloggers.
9. Sitting Behind Andy at the GMC and thinking what a waste of time and money.
10.US news ....

My top 10 is all rolled up in a top one! Watching my son after a year of chelation literally skip off to school this morning/this year happy happy happy. He's gone from being spaced out, tantruming, crying in school to probably one outburst a day which he easily and quickly recovers from many times on his own.

Thank you Jenny and all the other parents who have helped so many of us help our children. The outrage I feel surfaces all the time ... reading Katie Wright's post about her vacation broke my heart. This has to be the world's worst coverup period. They'll fight until the end to deny the damage they've caused. I'm just thankful I found the warriors so my son can look me in the eye everyday and be healthy. He still has bad moments but don't we all .. and like Jenny says, I don't know what he would have been like had he not been hit by the vaccine bus.

JB,
Thank you for pointing out how far we're come. Sometimes we fail to put all the achievements together like this.

The truth is getting out and no one can possibly think that this will ever fade away unresolved. All the people like Paul Offit trying to pretend that the science has settled the issue have to realize that it's a fight they'll never win.

They struggle on because they have no choice. Public recognition of what vaccines have done to our children is so terrifying to them, they just have to continue the lies.

Media editor

My Top 10

1. Tanner saying "Hi Daddy" for the first time in six years the week before Father's Day.

2. Being told in a exam room by a medical Doctor that He believed that my son's autism was caused by vaccines.

3. Dan Olmsted and I having the same pediatrician. Also many many more coincidences that make you think De ja vu. How close are community is even though we never see each other.

4. Age of Autism 10,000 visitor... 100,000 visitor... 500,000 visitor

5. Eli Stone... Watching the courtroom Drama breakground and freak-out the establishment.

6. John McCain Entering the Autism Wars..."there's strong evidence" that thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative that was once in many childhood vaccines, is responsible for the increased diagnoses of autism in the U.S. Feb. '08

7.Of Course Jenny at the March... And the pictures being held up at the end.

8. Jenny Calling the CDC in front of everybody and leaving a message.

9.AAP searching for...“Parents of children with autism spectrum disorders who support immunization and who do not believe there is any link between their child’s vaccines and his or her autism.”

10. The Larry King Live show where Jenny knocked the crap out of them.

Other highlights... Autism the Musical, Jim Carrey Halts free Vac. at Horton Hears a Who, Kim's GFCF Bunny,Jenny on Chelsea Lately, Calling for Julie G. resignation & being told to stop calling, "MITOCHONDRIAL AUTISM", "Mistakes were made" Julie G., Poop Page, Too Manny Too Soon, Parental Parasites, Adding autism to All top, Opposing views, OC Register, Sponsors for AOA, Generation Rescue on Wrestling, Palin "Advocate in the White House". Everything you said.

I guess we will have to vote on the top ten...What a awesome roller coaster... I just wish we could get off and get on with living.

this is my wish list (from a UK perspective)

1 Jenny comes to the UK to head a green our vaccines rally ,appears on GMTV and shouts Bullsh*t at TV doctor.
2 Wakefield trail collapses after COI scandal is revealed.
3 US news is reported in the UK
4 David Kirby comes to visit again (as i was on holiday last time)
5 UK charity NAS start helping people with Biomed and promoting it.
6 we all keep telling one person a day recovery is possible and autism is treatable

Thank You JB. A lot has happened in the last year. I hope things keep happening at an accelerated pace. I remember when my son was younger it was a "treat" to see autism mentioned in an article in a magazine or the newspaper every once in a blue moon.

Our kids are aging. My son is going to be a full fledged teenager in a few months. We have a national crisis on our hands. And, most people don't even realize what this country is in store for.

I'm thankful for this list you compiled to see how far we have come and to think about how far we have to go.

And maybe this year the "wild eyed maniac" will drop off the face of the earth and we'll never have to hear from that psychopath again. :)

JB!!!
You left Generation Rescue and Age of Autism out of the mix!!!
Hope and answers for parents. Parents who are shuffled from doctor to doctor, misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, lost and looking for answers.
Thank you for being a haven and refuge for the vaccine battered.

It's been a few years since I signed on as a rescue angel for Generation Rescue.
It's neat to see, some of the parents now have verbal kids entering regular classrooms.
I often wonder where they would be if you hadn't placed those USA Today ads or set up such an informative web sight.

You're number one in my book, the others a close second!
