From the Editor: Making waves

David Kirby's next book, "Death at Sea World," isn't out till July but already there are two petitions against it. You know, don't buy it, don't read it, don't believe it. Kinda familiar, eh?

Letter I sent to Dr. Healy re. autism and the need for infant boys to be circumcised.

Dr. Healy, my wife and I have three children. The youngest is severely autistic.

His delivery was normal … but quick. Once the water broke, he delivered himself in 90 seconds … on the gurney as the nurses were trying to wheel my wife out of the room for surgery (we had warned them she “goes fast” but they said “Yeah, yeah.” )

Anyhow, our regular doctor was in route to the hospital, but did not make it in time. Another doctor came to tie off the umbilical cord, and without consulting us, did only a partial circumcision on Daniel. At the time we did not think much of it.

Now I wish he had done a full circumcision, and here is why.

Due to Daniel’s autism, he has little cognizance of his bodily functions and of the need for hygiene.

It has resulted in taking many days each year of constantly cleaning under the partial flap of foreskin from dirt and “gunk” until puberty set in and the foreskin retracted so that cleaning his penis became much more easy --- for him as well as us.

My point: I suggest every male infant be fully circumcised because with the growing numbers of mentally disabled children, the penis is very prone to infection if there is a foreskin remaining.

I only read your December article on a plane trip last week, and finally found a way to contact you, so I hope you pass on this information to others in the field.

Thank you, and God bless.

Yours truly,

Allah H. Beeber, Ph.D.

P.S. As a polymer chemist, I appreciate your not “writing off” the possible link between vaccines + heavy metal preservatives and autism, Dr. Healy. I have worked with heavy metals, and understand their potential toxicity to some degree.

Sharing my letter here--

Dear Dr. Healy,

I just want to thank you for having the courage and integrity to say that vaccines may harm susceptible children. My daughter is 15 and had all thimerosal vaccines in 1993 and 1994. She had a gradual regression but then rapidly declined after her MMR vaccination. She is very impaired and nonverbal. Your statements, like those of Dr. Jon Poling and others in recent months, have restored my faith in the medical community. My father, who is deceased, was a physician, and having the medical establishment turn its back on autism was the insult to injury that no one could be prepared for. This journey has been a painful one but a trailblazing one.

I have hope that this epidemic of autism will end and more children will then be medically helped. Your interview will be a catalyst for that paradigm change. You may get horrible exchanges from others who will not look at this possibility but for those of us affected by autism at its most extreme manifestations, please know that your words mean so much.

Sincerely,

Teresa Conrick
