From the Editor: Making waves

David Kirby's next book, "Death at Sea World," isn't out till July but already there are two petitions against it. You know, don't buy it, don't read it, don't believe it. Kinda familiar, eh?

FOOKED

GenieBy J.B. Handley

Don’t let the New York Times hit-and-run piece last Friday on parents who don’t vaccinate fool you. Our public health establishment, the AAP, and pediatricians in general are utterly and completely…fooked (hey, this is a family blog!).

The Poling case has opened a pandora’s box so complex and nasty that our health authorities have no idea what to do.

Before the Poling case became worldwide news, and soon after David Kirby’s piece ran in the Huffington Post that started this whole wonderful cluster-fook, the Vaccine Lobby went into red-alert mode. Paul Offit himself was calling most of the major reporters in the country, trying to explain to them why the Poling decision meant nothing and was certainly not newsworthy. Unfortunately for Offit, the court decision was already on the web for reporters to read, and soon after the media learned that Hannah’s Dad was a mainstream neurologist.

Five days later, the Poling press conference was televised in its entirety on CNN, carried as the lead story on every network’s evening news, and the focus of the next 36 hours of the news cycle. Nice try, Mr. Offit. Game over.

The Vaccine Lobby’s response after the genie escaped from the bottle has been enjoyable to watch. First, it was “autism-like symptoms.” Then, it was “rare mitochondrial disorder.” Some combination of Deirdre Imus and John Poling himself convinced most of the media that this was spin and hype. With the New York Times piece on parents not vaccinating, you see the Vaccine Lobby’s next attempt to respond to the Polings: they are going to try to remind Americans that not vaccinating their child will lead to certain death, which is a hell of a lot worse than autism.

As I said before, completely fooked.

If your surreal life these last three weeks is anything like mine, you’ve been approached by neighbors you didn’t even think knew you had a child with autism say, “Hey, I saw that court case decision. Wow…so what do you think about vaccines for my kid?”

And you know what? Of all the people who approach me, not one has mentioned “autism-like symptoms” or “mitochondrial disorder.” They’re all just scared to death that vaccines will do to their kid what they did to mine, and they’d like me to help them avoid that.

If you know a mainstream pediatrician, ask what them what life is like right now. You know what they’ll tell you? That they are spending way too much time having to try and defend vaccines or deal with grumpy parents who want to waste time separating and delaying shots and having a half hour debate on each vaccine. Because of all this noise, they are making a lot less money and straining relationships with many of their “customers.”

You know that cop who’s in the news because it appears he drowned his second wife and now his third is missing? He went on the Today show, looked into the camera, and said, “Baby, come home.” Not one person in the world believed him, not even himself.

That dude reminds me a lot of our health authorities, thoroughly and completely fooked, hoping someone will believe their bullshit, with nowhere to go.

In 1962 I was a healthy normal 4 year old. I was injected with polio vaccine and was in hospital by the following week with paralytic polio along with a neighbour kid who was injected the same day I was. This was not the sugar lump vaccine but straight from the needle.

My children are in their late teens are are completely unvaccinated and very healthy.

A couple of yeas ago I was working in a small town nursery school. We had 14 kids in the school. Three had asthma, one had a birth defect and one had an ASD, out of 14 kids in a small town! This is not normal. Vaccines cause autism, learning disorders, polio, cancer and a host of other disorders. You would have to be insane to inject this stuff into your kids. Please stop doing this.

"The polio bit is a bit off-topic though, since the vaccine was never, ever implicated in causing autism."

doodle let's never say never :). We have no idea what might have been in vaccine vials in the past, and even more so today, when even the FDA is so broke that they are unable to even check anymore.

BTW Leila it appears that the incidence of polio is directly correlated to the use of DDT or pesticides. As per the graphs in the link below, once the DDT was banned, the polio too dropped out of sight. I wonder why it is that we are so aggressively vaccinating for polio even today. Did you know this?

http://www.westonaprice.org/envtoxins/pesticides_polio.html

You may want to look for other graphs out there that show infectious diseases dropping well before mass vaccinations came into play. I hope somebody is documenting the increase in auto-immune disorders AFTER vaccinations were introduced. Perhaps the CDC might have this data. It would also be interesting to see the increases in asthma, autism, ADD, ADHD, bi-polar disorders, kidney diseases going up along with the increase in the vaccine schedule beginning in the early 90s. If you find such a graph please do share it with us. Its really nice to see this very important information over and over again. It keeps the likes of us here on AoA busy and on our toes and very cognizant of the fact that we are on a mission of the utmost importance. Thank you.

"Changing the schedule, maybe; not vaccinating siblings at risk, maybe."

Congrats, you just agreed with JB Handley. The polio bit is a bit off-topic though, since the vaccine was never, ever implicated in causing autism. Acute flaccid paralysis maybe, but not autism. But what's a little acute flaccid paralysis between friends anyways?

quoting Leila:
Seriously, Deborah, how old are you? And where are you reading this stuff? Don't you remember that children DIED of polio, or became paraplegic after contracting the disease? My husband's uncle died of polio at 8 years old. He was a normal, healthy, handsome kid. This happened in the 50's, not too long ago. I'm not even 40 and I remember seeing kids and adults in the 70's that were in wheelchairs because of polio. I also had a friend who was deaf due to meningitis.

Even *IF* autism is caused by vaccines in some cases, the answer is not to banish vaccines. Changing the schedule, maybe; not vaccinating siblings at risk, maybe. Pressuring CDC for more research and disclosure on vaccine safety, absolutely. But you have to be reasonable and think about the big picture. Autism is not the only disease in the world. You can beat me up as much as you want, but you'll always be against the majority of society, who's happy to have protection against killing and maiming diseases that can be prevented with one quick jab at the doctor's office.

------------------

But Leila, I didn't say anything at all about banning vaccines. All I did was point out that the statistics you were using to support vaccinating were incorrect. I'll state once again that even at the height of the polio epidemic the number of children who were getting sick was not anywhere close to 1 in 150. The fact that polio is incredibly mild in the majority of cases is little known because the emphasis has been on the children and adults who became seriously ill. Such an emphasis does not supply accurate numbers or a clear picture of the nature of a disease. And accurate numbers and a clear picture are an excellent prerequisite for good public health planning. Thanks for your response.

My age? I'm old enough to remember the polio epidemics. Also old enough to read statistics with a critical eye. You might try that some time.

Leila has no excuse. She has a Master of Science Degree in Guidance and Counseling and should know better than to bait people. She should also read some of the new research in the last few days before spouting her opinion.

Leila has regressive autism, which might explain the tone of her comments and her lack of empathy.

Brief Synopsis About Myself
Born in October 1959, a healthy baby girl, the eldest of 5 children.

My developmental milestones were normal as a baby until I was around 15 months. In January 1961, I was laying peacefully in my crib when, suddenly, a light in my room burned out! Such an experience stifled me, leaving my very frightened, anxious, confused and delayed in language skills. AND SO IT BEGAN....the PERVASIVE DEVELOPMENTAL DISORDER!!! (To this day, I remember in detail the change; and, I have been a fearful individual and a person with a very sensitive sensory nervous system since then).

Between the ages of 15 months and 3 years old, I did not talk. My communication with my parents often involved pointing to things to indicate to my parents that I wanted something. I was withdrawn inward at this time of my life, thinkiing of myself as "the only one that existed" and that everyone and everything around me was just there for me to use. "Just who were the others anyway? What was their purpose?" (As many years passed, with a patient and loving mother, I eventually learned that there were a few people out there who were not "things", and that they were genuine to me).

From the time I was 2-years-old to 3-years old, I was a runner; my parents had to constantly hold onto my hand whenever they would take me anywhere. If they were to ever let go of me, I would take off, running like crazy, as if nothing mattered around me. There was no sense of danger! There were no concerns! There was just the thought of wanting to be free and exist on my own. Whenever I did take off, my parents would run after me calling my name. I was very unresponsive to them when they called me, oftentimes appearing as if I did not hear them. (To this day, I can remember wanting "to be free"; I do not remember why I did not respond to them except that "I must have been in my own little world".

When I was 4-years-old, my verbal language skills did come back, although I was a rather quiet child, often staying to myself. I had much difficulty in understanding what was being said to me; I could not follow verbal directions. And I was unable to verbally express that I was unable to understand what people were saying whether it was conversation with me or conversation between other people. At 4 and 5, I was able to entertain myself with my toys; one of my favorite pasttimes was taking my baby dolls and lining them up. I enjoyed playing with any toy that I could place into a specific order; I often preferred to lining up objects to actually learning the function of the objects. (To this day, as an adult, I still like to line up objects and classify them, although now, I know the function of most objects).

From the time I was in Kindergarten until I was in the Sixth Grade, school was extremely hard for me as I had much trouble learning, concentrating and verbally expressing myself. I had difficulty with following directions, and I often had trouble understanding what was being said to me by the teachers. My grades were poor between the 2nd and into the 5th grade (I came close to flunking out in both the 2nd and the 5th grade). Many people thought that I might have had some type of learning disability as well as an emotional disability. It certainly appeared that way as I was frightened, withdrawn, uncoordinated and often in "another world" daydreaming. I was often called "retarded", "a dummy" and "stupid" by many of my classmates. The teachers were concerned about me as I "was unusually quiet" and did not play or interact much with other children. As I got older, at the age of twelve, I was determined to show the adults and the children who thought I was stupid that "I am a person, and that there is more to me than what I appear to be". With fierce motivation and a strong drive to achieve, through actual compensation for my difficulties, and using my own methods of visual learning and strict rote memorization, I eventually made it to having good grades in Junior High School leading me to high academic achievement in High School and College. Regardless, it was a struggle for me.

(Throughout my life, I have had meltdowns, OCD-like behaviors, Tourette-like Tics whenever I would become upset about something, perseverating when I speak, severe anxiety, mild depression, and an overal lack of friends; all of this varied in duration and intensity from time to time. There were times in my life when it got so bad, I thought I was just going to shut down, and there were times in my life when it was hardly a nuisance for me. In my 30s and 40s, I have learned to control the meltdowns and perseverations).

I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Old Dominion University and a Master of Science Degree in Guidance and Counseling from Old Dominion University. I graduated with honors from college, and I was Valedictorian of my high school class (this is considered to be one of my biggest accomplishments in life, next to getting and maintaining emmployment in a most difficult and stressful field for an autistic person-human services, although, it has been human services which has helped me to learn several social skills).

As an adult in my forties, learning concepts and understanding language is much easier than it was 20 years ago; however, there is always the need to compensate. I am strictly a visual learner, needing a hands-on experience with many tasks. In order to make sense of the world, I have to visualize pictures in my mind. I cannot think in words, I have to think in pictures. Sometimes when people tell me things, I need them to repeat something because of an occasional problem with auditory processing, severe attention deficit and the need to visualize. Jokes and expressions with various meanings/interpretations are the most hardest for me to understand; and, facial expressions, body language and reading the emotions of others is extremely challenging for me.

As a teenager at the age of 14 until I was a young adult at 26 years old, I mowed lawns. I had a paper route when I was 22. I did some work study jobs in college such as working in the Old Dominion University Library, working for a college professor as a clerical person/messenger, and working in the Academic Counseling/Advising Office as a clerical person. I also worked a little in fast food, but that did not work well with me as"I was labelled slow" by my boss and other coworkers. I just did not have the coordination to do fast food.

I have been working in the Human Services Field since 1984. I have worked in a variety of capacities such as a Counselor in a Group Home for adults/children with Developmental Disabilities; the Program Coordinator of an Infant/Toddler Early Intervention Program; a Special Education Coordinator/Teacher of a preschool program whereby I designed the curriculum for that particular program; and, an Administrative Assistant.

All of my life, I knew that there was something different about me. For many years, I wondered why I was so different and why it was so hard to connect with other people to the point of exclusion. I have often felt like an outsider looking in (or maybe feeling like an alien from another planet).

For me, being an adult with autism/asperger's syndrome is much different from when I was a child; yes, I have come a long way. I have improved much in my receptive language skills, social skills (although this is still my weakest area), behaviorally, and that I am an individual with a strong sense of motivation. I believe in challenges, and I take on challenges.

I can thank my mother, Cecilia S. for her enduring patience, her unconditional love and her dreams that I will one day find my niche' in life; with all my mother has been through with me, I can say she qualifies for a very special "Sainthood". And for my dear late friend, Mrs. Jane Morrow, who showed unconditional acceptance of me and who helped raised me during some of the family's most trying times (my parents also lost two other children to cancer as well as have another child who displays signs of Asperger's Syndrome).

Leila darling….

Unfortunately, I do have to “teach” you when you falsely accuse us of being “gung ho and celebrating the return of infectious diseases” simply because we question the safety of vaccines.

And you’ll have to excuse me if I don’t pull out the violin for your two weeks of “not eating” but compared to what Craig’s son has to deal with – along with thousands of other children – your temporary “discomfort” is a non-issue when weighed against a lifelong disability – sorry.

And you call me selfish?

Leila, maybe you don't realize what a hypocrite you are being when you call it "terrible parenting" to take a child to a chickenpox party. The mother who did that gave her child lifelong immunity to the chickenpox, without the risks of the chickenpox vaccine (with its toxic adjuvants such as aluminum and formaldehyde). She also helped the rest of the "herd" by giving her child this immunity. Terrible parenting, in my book, is lining up your kid for his boatload of government-mandated shots without considering the consequences. Terrible parenting is making your kid one of the ones horribly damaged by the varicella vaccine: 71 deaths, 286 life-threatening illnesses, 283 permanent disabilities, and the list goes on (see VAERS.hhs.gov to run the query for yoursel).

Leila, Please get your statistics right! Polio never, ever, ever afflicted anything like 1 in 150, even at the absolute worst of the epidemic. Here is a link on measles statistics for those who need to get a sense of how massively the dangers of measles have been inflated: http://insidevaccines.com/wordpress/?p=65

On polio, the illness is so mild that most people don't know they've been infected. The statistic on polio as an illness is that roughly one in 1,000 will get sick of those who actually "catch" it. Of those who get sick an even smaller number will have permanent sequelae. And once you've had polio you are immune. Even without the vaccine we never could have ended up with 1 child out of 150 afflicted. That particular disease doesn't work like that.

Darlings... My son is autistic too, you don't need to "teach" me anything. And as much as you can talk about the "horrors" of autism there will be just as many people who can tell much sadder stories about a child who died or had some type of brain damage due to a vaccine-preventable disease. You guys are so self-centered you think you're the only ones with a real problem.

Yes, measles was absolutely horrible - two weeks without eating is pretty bad in my book, I can only imagine how worried my Mom was. This is much more than simple "discomfort". But Kelli, the reason why there's not a 1-150 ratio of polio in our society is because of the VACCINES.

It would be pretty ironic if one day they came up with a vaccine against autism. Would you guys be against of that one too?

"I've contracted chickenpox and measles as a kid and teenager. Both of them made me and my siblings/friends who got it absolutely miserable for at least two weeks. Measles didn't itch but I had sores in my throat that were so severe that I could not eat and remained on a liquid diet for several days. Plus isolated from anybody but my mother (who had measles as a kid) for two weeks. Regardless of the fact that IN MY CASE both diseases didn't have lifelong side effects, I was glad that my child's generation can be vaccinated against those awful diseases and not go through what I did."

I'm afraid you are in need of a real problem...sores in your mouth...two weeks of rest...a liquid diet for several days...seriously??? You want us to risk our 'genetically' susceptible children (autoimmune issues diagnosed in all of our families) to autism, so your children will not have two weeks of discomfort? Think about that!

I enjoyed JBs article and want add more for others to use in closing this issue. Bringing in science to the Poling case is going to undo the CDC and its supporters like Dr. Offit. They seem totally unaware of the biological significance of this case. First, keep in mind the young autistic daughter has identical mitochondrial genetics as does her mother. The mother has a law and a nursing degree, so her mitochondia seemed not to be dysfunctional. Therefore, the "underlying mitochondrial disorder" seems to be a figment of someone's imagination. There are many mutations in the "wild type" (means the most common)DNA of humans and animals that do not cause any manifestations of illness, they are called benign mutations. This seems to be the situation in the Poling case. The most likely difference between the mother and daughter is most likely a toxic exposure.

Many, myself included, have pointed to genetic susceptibility to a specific toxin, namely thimerosal, as the most likely cause of the autism epidemic since thimerosal (read ethylmercury) was the most toxic material the infants were exposed to before autism was diagnosed, and the fact that the epidemic increase occurred in all 50 states at about the same time the CDC mandated its vaccine program. Also, Dan Olmstead reported that non-vaccinated populations seemed not to have autism. Dr. Amy Holmes reported that autistic infants do not seem as capable of excreting mercury as do neurotypical children. Dr. Jill James showed that autistics have lower glutathione levels than neurotypical children and medicine knows that most mercury is removed from infants as the glutathione-Hg complex through the billary transport system of the liver into the feces. If infants don't have enough bile and not enough glutathione then they are up fecal street if given a massive dose of thimerosal on the day of birth or in the first few months of their lives.

Lack of reduced glutathione is a sign of oxidative stress that can be caused by infections, or toxins---and mercury is known to reduce glutathione levels very rapidly. So we don't know if the initial oxidative stress seen in autistics is due to mercury or other causes---but we do know that mercury in vaccines would exacerbate the proven oxidative stress seen in these children.

Why blame thimerosal? Dr. Robert Nataf first showed that autistic children have a "urinary porphyrin profile" that shows they are mercury toxic. There is a build up of specific porphryins in mercury toxic humans and rats as shown by Dr. James Wood and others, so this is solid science. This unusual porphyrin build up (increased coproporphyrinogen III) is caused by mercury preventing this terminal porphyrin molecule from entering the mitochondria through the mito's inner membrane where it is converted to heme (the oxygen carrying molecule of hemoglobin). So there is no doubt that mercury can cause a "mitochondrial disorder". Heme is also used in the cytochromes of the ETS (electron transport system) in the inner mitocondrial membrane and a lack of heme would inhibit the ability of the ETS to support the synthesis of ATP (the molecule that is used for DNA, RNA and protein synthesis (e.g. glutathione). Also, heme is required for the enzymes that remove organic toxins from the body (the cytochrome P450 system)leading to additional organic toxin build up. The ETS is also high in iron-sulfur clusters that would bind mercury with negative effects. Bottom line, mercury inhibition of this one pathway can cause numerous secondary biochemical problems seen in autistic children and in other neurological illnesses. This occurs in the mitochondria.

Add to this the fact that levels of thimerosal, levels surpassed by vaccinations of infants, can easily reach the level that inhibits methione synthetase (prevents effect methylation as reported by Dr. Deth) and that blocks phagocytosis (the first step in the immune system). This is why thimerosal is an effective immune system suppressor (and this makes you wonder who made the decision to approve it in vaccines).

Others have reported the mercury inhibition of the intestinally located PPIV protease that leads to the build up of proline containing peptides from gluten and casein that bind to morphine receptors. In our laboratory we have recently determined that another enzyme, matrix metallo proteinase or (MMP), that breaks down collagen (the major matrix protein that holds cells together)is activated by mercury and thimerosal at very low concentrations. Google MMP and see all of the infammatory diseases that are accompanied by the activation of this enzyme, which mercury does! MMP activation likely leads to a leaky gut type of problem. So, in a thimerosal toxic child the inhibition of PPIV increases the production of neurotoxic peptides and the activation of MMP increases the ability of these peptides (as well as other food derived peptides)to cross the intestinal barrier. It is a double whammy that again could lead to other problems secondary to the initial mercury toxic event. Autoimmune indicators fit into this scenario also.

Finally, it irritates me to no end when I hear CDC officials and leaders of pediatrics state that the science does not support an autism-vaccine (thimerosal) connection. Their choosing to place more value on poorly done epidemiological studies (done entirely by foreigners who can't be subpoenaed)rather than evaluate the actual biological science shows the contempt or ignorance they have for toxicological/biochemical research. The CDC continues to stay at rock bottom and digging a deeper hole for themselves. It is my prediction that their self-imposed ignorance will become legendary and will greatly damage medicine and the vaccine program. Our country needs to take the search for the possible causes away from the CDC or it will never be resolved---which I think is their main goal.

To Leila:

“That said, I understand that some people are afraid of the side effects of some vaccines.”

Afraid? That’s a fooking understatement! Read what Craig wrote this morning about his son:

“My son began scratching and hitting at himself, drawing blood and leaving deep furrows on his skin. There was no rash that I could see, but his blood-curdling screams made it obvious to me that he was in severe pain and distress.

He's currently in the hospital for psychiatric evaluation. Watching them put my 6 year old son in restraints is the most difficult thing I have ever done in my entire life.”

With all due respect, the 2 weeks of sores in your mouth doesn’t even come close to the pain and suffering that this little boy and his family will experience for the REST OF THEIR LIVES!

“But I would never, never be gung-ho and celebrate the fact that infectious, vaccine-preventable diseases are back, and vaccination rates are decreasing. This is just literally sick.”

What makes me “literally sick” is the fact that people (like yourself) can’t seem to separate the fact that advocating for safe vaccines DOESNOT equate to being “gung-ho” about the possible reemergence of infectious diseases!

Tell you what -- when the numbers for polio (a lifelong debilitating disease) reaches the 1 in 150 rate, we can talk.

Until then, don’t even try to compare the suffering of a rare event to the pain and suffering experienced by thousands of children in this country every single day!

Kelli Ann Davis

Its only fair that the Medical community and fake guardians of the public health experience some "fooked" upness in their lives since those of us in the autism community certainly have been living that way for quite some time now. Payback is a bitch. I'm still hoping for orange jumpsuits on Paul Offit and friends before the end of the decade. High five to JB!

Perhaps my favorite part of the NYT article was the citation of 24 cases of people infected with pertussis in California in 2007. According to the CDC's Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS), there were 89 "serious" adverse events associated with pertussis vaccination in California in 2007, 14 of which were death. (You can look it up, too: check out http://vaers.hhs.gov/ and select California, vaccinations in 2007, adverse events in any year, category of "serious," and multi-select every vaccine containing pertussis.) Let's see--24 cases of pertussis (of which the Times articles does not indicate how many resulted in fatalities), compared with 89 serious adverse events, including 14 fatalities. It's not a hard question for a parent to answer, is it?

yes, me to. I have had many conversations with even doctors in my group about not vaccinating....of course none are pediatricians so their not totally blind.

I've contracted chickenpox and measles as a kid and teenager. Regardless of the fact that IN MY CASE both diseases didn't have lifelong side effects, I was glad that my child's generation can be vaccinated against those awful diseases and not go through what I did. I can't believe those women in the article took children to chickenpox and measles parties. That's terrible parenting.

That said, I understand that some people are afraid of the side effects of some vaccines. And I support more research on the subject. But I would never, never be gung-ho and celebrate the fact that infectious, vaccine-preventable diseases are back, and vaccination rates are decreasing. This is just literally sick.

In a few months many prestigious people will be covered with shame for allowing a generation of children to become damaged neurologically, immunologically, psychologically. The cloak will weigh heavily on them, but they won't be able to remove it.

Yes, the genie certainly is out of the bottle and it is quite humorous watching the different agencies and spin meisters trying to muscle the genie back into to the bottle to no avail. Just this morning on Today Show, Nancy Snyderman was at it full force putting the guilt trip on parents who are afraid to vaccinate. It seems there was an outbreak of measles (12 cases) in San Diego and 3 or 4 had been fully vaccinated with the measles vaccine. When Matt Lauer inquired about the kids who were vaccinated but still contracted measles she was forced to reveal vaccines are not 100% effective.... Whaaat? Oops! Snyderman let that cat out of the bag right there on national TV.

OK, so now Snydernman is admitting vaccines are NOT 100% effective... I wonder how long it will be until she is forced to reveal the other truth, vaccines are not 100% safe!

Thanks JB for writing the fooking truth!

Thanks J.B. This is priceless!! For all your endeavors along the way, on behalf of all our children, THANK YOU, SIR!!!

"That dude reminds me a lot of our health authorities, thoroughly and completely fooked, hoping someone will believe their bullshit, with nowhere to go."

Evidently its going to take a major flood - more than what the recent storms brought - to get these dudes and dudettes to climb to the tallest branch of the denial tree. I wonder what fair equivalent of Noah's Ark the Devil might find to ship them in. Here's hoping there's enough gas in the torture chamber to smother all of the LYING media "plants" in the major TV networks too! Evidently there is a serious lack of integrity, morals, honesty, that seems to percolate from the highest echelons of the American hierarchy as we know it.

Yes, I am thoroughly enjoying this fooked up time all of these organizations and people, especially mr. Offit, are living! The "Baby come home" is priceless, creepy, and the pathological, sack of bullshit that accompanies it is familiar.

Thanks!
